First-of-its-kind legislation that classifies two abortion-inducing drugs as controlled and dangerous substances was signed into law Friday by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry. The Republican governor announced his signing of the bill in Baton Rouge a day after it gained final legislative passage in the state Senate. The measure affects the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, which are used in medication abortions, the most common method of abortion in the U.S. Opponents of the bill included many physicians who said the drugs have other critical reproductive health care uses, and that changing the classification could make it harder to prescribe the medications.

The United States government agreed to a US$15 million fine for Norfolk Southern over last year's disastrous derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and the railroad promised to pay more than $500 million to complete the efforts to improve safety that it announced after the crash and address community health concerns. Residents who had to evacuate their homes after the derailment were generally underwhelmed by the deal the Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department announced Thursday that doesn't include any criminal charges. This federal settlement comes two days after a federal judge signed off on the railroad's $600 million class action settlement with residents whose lives were disrupted.

The right-wing party which formerly controlled Poland’s justice ministry is facing growing heat over allegations it mismanaged a fund meant to compensate crime victims and instead used it as a political slush fund. The justice minister in the former Law and Justice (PiS) party government that ruled Poland from 2015 until last year was Zbigniew Ziobro, who headed a smaller Catholic-nationalist party called Sovereign Poland that was PiS’s junior coalition partner. He was one of the driving figures behind the bust-up between Warsaw and Brussels over rule of law — pushing through sweeping changes to the justice system that were seen as bringing judges under tighter political control. He was also the country’s chief prosecutor, and during his time in office prosecutors had a tendency to avidly pursue his political enemies while quietly dropping problematic cases.

Arizona doctors can temporarily come to California to perform abortions for their patients under a new law signed Thursday by Gov. Gavin Newsom. California's law is meant to give Arizonans an option to receive legal abortions from their doctor over the next several months when nearly all abortions in the state will be temporarily banned. There's a law in Arizona -- first passed in 1864, but not enforced for decades -- that bans nearly all abortions in the state. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that law would take effect in June now that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing states set their own abortion laws. The state Legislature quickly voted to repeal that law, and Arizona's Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs promptly signed it. But the repeal won't take effect until September at the earliest, leaving an approximately three-month window when most abortions would be banned in the state.

A New York jury on Thursday found former President Donald Trump guilty of all 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels by his then-personal lawyer before the 2016 election. Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of any crime. His sentencing was quickly scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. ET. That is four days before the beginning of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump is set to be formally confirmed as the GOP’s presidential nominee. Trump, who remains free without bail, faces a maximum possible sentence of four years in prison for each count.

Families of the victims killed in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, have filed two wrongful death lawsuits: one against the firearm manufacturer and another against two technology companies, Meta and Microsoft, for their alleged role in marketing the weapon used. Friday’s pair of lawsuits came on the second anniversary of the school shooting, one of the deadliest in United States history. The gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, attacked Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, and killed 19 children and two teachers, leaving 17 more people injured.

Israeli officials are growing wary that they could face prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the war in Gaza. After days of conjecture in Israeli media, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late on Sunday (April 28) that it has issued warnings to senior political and military officials that they could soon face arrest warrants. The ministry said it has informed Israeli missions of “rumours” concerning prosecutions. The ICC has given no indication that warrants are imminent and has made no comment on the claims.

Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda has declared victory in the final round of the Baltic nation’s presidential election, as partial results showed him far ahead in the two-way race against Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte. Ballots from nearly 90 percent of polling stations on Sunday showed Nauseda, 60, winning roughly three-quarters of the vote, followed by Simonyte, 49, from the ruling centre-right Homeland Union party. Protests are expected to resume in Taiwan on Friday over a divisive bill that would greatly expand the investigative powers of parliament and has already drawn tens of thousands of people onto the streets. Protesters gathered outside the legislature on Tuesday to coincide with the first reading of the bill, which legislators took up again on Friday for the second reading. While many democracies have similar provisions for legislative investigations – like the Watergate investigation in the United States or the phone hacking scandal in the United Kingdom – protesters say authors of the Taiwan bill have railroaded it through the voting process, and that it lacks the checks and balances necessary to prevent abuse.

Gaza officials say the death toll from Israeli air strikes on a camp housing displaced Palestinians near Rafah in southern part of the strip has risen to 45. The enclave’s health ministry on Monday said 45 people, including 23 women, children and elderly, were killed in the attack and 249 others wounded. Witnesses said at least eight missiles struck the camp – a designated safe zone – on Sunday night at about 8.45pm local time (17:45 GMT). The Wafa news agency, quoting the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), said that many of those who died were “burned alive” inside their tents in the Tal as-Sultan area.

The Czech Republic government has signed an expanded union for same-sex couples into law, but has failed to include marriage or full adoption rights for the queer community in the country. The new legislation grants shared property and inheritance rights to LGBTQ+ couples in the EU country and also allows the partner of a biological parent to adopt their child.  However, the “partnership” bill – which was signed into law on 29 April by LGBTQ+ advocate President Pavel, according to local outlet ČT24 – between same-sex couples still doesn’t include full adoption or marriage rights. The law will go into effect on 1 January 2025, according to Jsme Fer (We Are Fair).

A dam collapsed in western Kenya early Monday (April 22), killing at least 40 people after a wall of water swept through houses and cut off a major road, police said. The Old Kijabe Dam, located in the Mai Mahiu area of the Great Rift Valley region that is prone to flash floods, collapsed and water spilled downstream, carrying with it mud, rocks and uprooted trees, police official Stephen Kirui told The Associated Press. Vehicles were entangled in the debris on one of Kenya’s busiest highways and paramedics treated the injured as waters submerged large areas. Ongoing rains in Kenya have caused flooding that has already killed nearly 100 people and postponed the opening of schools. Heavy rains have been pounding the country since mid-March and the Meteorology Department has warned of more rainfall.

A judge has rejected a request by Alec Baldwin to dismiss his criminal charge relating to the fatal shooting on the set of Rust. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer upheld an indictment charging Baldwin with one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, in 2021. The New Mexico judge rejected defence arguments that prosecutors flouted the rules of grand jury proceedings to divert attention away from exculpatory evidence and witnesses. Prosecutors denied the accusations and said Baldwin made "shameless" attempts to escape culpability, highlighting contradictions in his statements to law enforcement, to workplace safety regulators, and in a television interview.
