anyway, apropos of the tags on that last bitter reblog about NYT bestselling books, some books i've read lately that i've loved and highly recommend!!! in no particular order:

the art of prophecy by wesley chu. BITCH, reading this book was my only priority for like a week straight. imagine the "chosen one" trope but the chosen one is actually a spoiled little shitstain who is 100% not ready to live up to what's expected of him. mix in a little magic and wuxia, an assassin cult, and a revolutionary uprising, and you've got what's probably in my top 3 reads of the year.

unmask alice: LSD, satanic panic, and the imposter behind the world's most notorious diaries by rick emerson. if you've read or even heard of 'go ask alice' or 'jay's journal' by anonymous, this is pretty much required reading as far as i'm concerned. i think everyone knows by now that the "real" diaries are, in fact, horseshit, but this book really lays out exactly how damaging those books were – particularly to the family of alden barrett, whose real journal was essentially cannibalized by beatrice sparks for her own gain. this is a heavy read but damn. worth it.

jade city by fonda lee. another favorite of 2022!! imagine if 'the godfather' had magic and kung fu and you've got 'jade city.' it's part 1 of a trilogy that just finished this year so now's as good a time as ever to dive in.

the helm of midnight by marina lostetter. in a world of magic, a long-dead serial killer is once more stalking the streets at night, thanks to the fact that his death mask was stolen and is now, apparently, being used to kill again. time for a good old fashioned serial killer investigation, this time is a fantasy setting, which makes this already fucked up tale even darker.
