does this mean Thunderbirds are go is over for good?
Gosh… this becomes a loaded question when it’s put into my inbox. 😂
As things stand currently, the show is finished. Rob’s message on twitter was the first real confirmation we had that this was it. It was really weird how it wasn’t until an HOUR before the finale, TAGHQ FINALLY said it was the final episode instead of the finale of season 3, as it had even said the DAY before. X_xa That was a hell of a weird marketing decision. But then ITV hasn’t really been very good at being straight with us any time.
Now, this isn’t to say it was cancelled… TV shows do just come to an end. Being cancelled is usually when crew even expect the show to go on and the plug gets unexpectedly pulled for whatever reason. Given the episode we got… it was written to tie a lot up, so it would stand as a good final ending… (But certainly, the door is totally open if they even wanted to continue.) yeah. This is no cancellation going on.
But I will note, Rob did say how in this business ‘Never say never.’ (Along with how he’d love to have more TAG too!) And Lee Majors did in an interview express he’d like to continue if it gets picked up for a 4th season.
These aren’t words of people who’ve been told that is most definitely the absolute last TAG/Thunderbirds thing ever. lol More episodes (or whatever!) isn’t on the table at the moment… but I think it’s presumptuous to assume there is absolutely ZERO chance some new TAG or Thunderbirds related thing won’t ever be made ever. And let us all keep in mind, Season 3 has also been yet to go to other countries… it may be done for the uk, but north america, japan, etc. are only up to season 2. We will have to keep an eye on who picks it up, because how well it does in other places might also play a role in what’s next for the franchise.
Basically, it’s all on ITV right now cause they’re the ones who own the franchise and have the money to fund these things.
They’ve just made a huge amount of new fans, on top of the existing ones and even created some new international fans too! I highly doubt they’re gonna just go and shelve it for another 10+ years. (Be downright idiotic imho >.>) Heck, even a few months ago the toy world magazine reported there was meant to be another wave of toys shortly… I’m hoping there will be some update about it soon. =Oa Cause if that goes through it goes to show ITV still thinks there’s an interest in TAG. …I mean, heck to partner with another toy company part way into a final season to make a SECOND toyline was very interesting.
SO yeah. We just gotta see what happens and keep making it clear to ITV there are people who want more Thunderbirds. Keep watching the show if you catch it on tv … if you like merch and toys… scoop em’ up XD And just keep being active and prove there’s an audience that craves more. The show being over doesn’t mean the fandom can’t grow… and again, S3 has a lot of places still to play which could bring in more folks. =D So yeah, I think that’s the most important thing to do right now.
Who knows what we could get in the future… Though I have a feeling whatever it would be would never be as TAG was… because I think the biggest issue for TAG was, as amazing as it was… using the real sets and models in combo with CGI was a huge undertaking. More than I still feel a lot of people understand and give credit to. I’d think if some new Thunderbirds (or even TAG!) related thing came along it might have to go full CGI or something like that, cause it would be far cheaper and faster to make.
ANYHOO, sorry for the long reply. XD I’ve had a lot of thoughts on this as you can see. XDDD I’ve just seen SO many being all THAT’S IT NO MORE ARE EVER BEING MADE EVER. lol And it’s like… yeah, it’s done, but… this is a franchise… it’s frickin’ THUNDERBIRDS. To assume the coffin is nailed shut for good I think is foolish. It seems pretty unlikely we’ll get another season (BUT still I would never say it’s impossible… if Rob’s sayin’ that, I can say that. XD) …but if ITV doesn’t look at it’s future options for the franchise in general, I’d be shocked.
And just… shit, if you told me even like 5 years ago I’d have a Dark Crystal series with puppets and everything, I’d have NEVER believed it. Shit can happen.
