My visit to the New Museum

The New Museum: 235 Bowery, New York, NY 10002 

The New Museum was different from all others. It was a small building in the Lower Eastside of New York and is a seven-floor high building and is exclusively devoted to presenting contemporary art from around the world. I found it interesting how it was first started in our NSSR building. It appeared like a commercial lobby with white walls and glass galleries upon entering. As you go up the elevator to the sky room you can see a great view of New York City. The other floors are all exhibitions. There was an interesting interactive art piece going on that day where we had to write on a post-it about our identity in New York. This reminded me of the interactive pieces that I came across in the Cooper Hewitt Museum.

Descriptions were not that clear but were needed as the art pieces were Contemporary, but the staff was attentive and helpful and explained everything. I had an amazing experience at this museum.

It was interesting to know that The New Museum of Contemporary Art prides itself on discovering and promoting talented contemporary artists who have yet to receive the recognition they deserve

One Painter’s Portrayal of Blackness

In a rather short period of time, Jordan Casteel has become one of the most interesting painters of her generation, working predominantly in the medium of portraiture. Casteel’s subjects are people of color — neighbors in Harlem, where she lives, or her students at Rutgers University, Newark, where she teaches — and they are rendered with a kind of beautiful vulnerability that is both honest and rare. Her work, which is now on view at the New Museum, Casteel’s first solo museum exhibition in New York, is something like the vibrancy of Matisse filtered through the intensity of Alice Neel. Her 2013-14 series of nudes of young black men, called “Visible Man,” is especially striking, with its use of greens, pinks, oranges and reds, all in the service of expanding upon a painterly definition of blackness. “I’m going to paint black men as I see and know them,” she recently told The Times about her artistic intention. “I wanted to get other people to see them in their humanity.” “Jordan Casteel: Within Reach,” is open through May 24 at the New Museum, 235 Bowery, New York, newmuseum.org. In Maine, a Cozy New Restaurant With a Haunted Past

Greg Mitchell is best known as the co-owner of the retro Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine. But last year, the proprietor launched his first solo act, Flood’s, in Portland. The restaurant is attached to the city’s Francis hotel, a 19th-century mansion by the architect Francis Fassett — who designed many Portland buildings after the area’s great fire of 1886 — that has also served as a funeral parlor. When it came to design, Mitchell mixed contemporary elements with nostalgic ones that pay homage to the building’s past: Alongside a still-life photograph by his wife, Meg Mitchell, of knafeh (a Palestinian dessert) are old maritime paintings, found family snapshots and other flea-market knickknacks that take on a new mythology in the tavern-style space. Like Palace, Flood’s offers creative comfort food like juicy burgers and pancetta toast with apple butter, as well as a laid-back environment personified by several unofficial and irreverent mascots from the minds of the Atlanta-based design and consulting group Office of Brothers, Inc., such as a beanie-wearing, cigarette-smoking fish. “I’m not in the business of challenging people with my space or my food,” Mitchell told me. Though I can’t speak to the fit, I can still remember the first white button-down I purchased (on sale at the mall) with my own money and the feeling that it would add a great deal of sophistication to my sixth-grade aesthetic. Pierpaolo Piccioli’s use of crisp shirting is, it turns out, even more elevated: The Valentino creative director has included various nods to the classic white shirt in his last few couture collections. Now, thanks to the fashion house’s Le Blanc pop-up, debuting at its New York flagship next week (before making stops in Los Angeles and Dallas), mere mortals can get a taste of the bespoke experience. Shoppers will choose between two basic shirt styles in white poplin, one longish and one cropped, and then work with a seamstress to customize the piece as they please, which might mean adding a bib, ruffles, floral embroidery, a feather detail or white-on-white monogramming. A Sustainably Designed Hotel Over the Kalahari Desert

Habitas, the experience-led members club and eco-hospitality group, recently closed its clubhouses in New York and Los Angeles to focus on building hotels for its community of wanderlusting millennials. The brand’s two-year-old flagship sits on a beach in Tulum, Mexico, and, while other locations are planned for San Miguel de Allende and Todos Santos, its first outpost opened earlier this month in Namibia. A 45-minute drive from Hosea Kutako International Airport, the brand’s take on a safari lodge has 15 sustainably designed suites — each a modular, 3-D-printed mini-lodge filled with custom furnishings and local crafts — and a private villa that sleeps 10. It all sits on a hilltop that overlooks the Kalahari Desert savanna, some 119,000 acres of which Habitas is recultivating as a wildlife reserve. Guests can explore by Land Cruiser, electric mountain bike or on foot with San tribesmen as their guides. The beauty industry is becoming more attuned to the unnecessary waste produced by packaging, and one of its latest eco-friendly measures is concentrating soaps and dental care in dissolvable tablets — which also saves cabinet space. “Many conventional formulas are over 90 percent water and come in bulky, single-use plastic bottles, so consumers are often paying for a new plastic bottle and water, which they already have at home,” explained Sarah Paiji Yoo, the co-founder and C.E.O. of the environmentally minded start-up Blueland, which makes several such tablets, including one for a foaming hand soap. There’s also the New York-based personal-care brand By Humankind, which has created a pill-size, alcohol-free mouthwash that, as of next week, comes in candy-colored ginger, mint-lemon and peppermint. The California-based dental-care brand Weldental, meanwhile, offers a gentle toothpaste tab containing Xylitol, a natural sweetener that helps prevent tooth decay, that activates into a paste upon chewing. Aside from the environmental benefits, watching these compact items fizz into full-fledged products will add a bit of excitement to your daily routine.

Aber die Neuentwicklungen und Veränderungen in der Lower East Side in New York haben den wahren Charakter des ehemaligen Zentrums der Einwanderer nicht zerstört. Man kann noch immer die Überreste der alten jüdischen Nachbarschaften erkunden, welche über viele Jahre die Heimat für die Marx Brüder und George Gershwin war. Es gibt viel zu sehen auf der Lower East Side –  die bekannten „Tenement Houses“, oder eine prachtvolle restaurierte Synagoge sind nur kleine Teile der Schätze, die die Lower East Side für sich bewahren konnte.

So kommt ihr zur Lower East Side

Die Lower East Side erreicht ihr am leichtesten mit der Subway. Ihr habt die Qual der Wahl: Ihr könnt entweder mit der Subway Linie F bis Delancy Street oder 2nd Ave fahren, oder mit den J Z bis Bowery.

Die Anfänge der Lower East Side

Südlich der Houston Street – die übrigens „Hausten“ ausgesprochen wird und nicht, wie viele denken, „Juston“ – sowie westlich des East Rivers gelegen, erzählt die Lower East Side eine sehr interessante, aber auch traurige Geschichte über ihre Vergangenheit.

Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden die sogenannten „Tenement Houses“ errichtet, um den steigenden Einwanderungszahlen von Deutschen, Juden und Italienern in New York City gerecht zu werden. In den sehr einfachen, schnell erbauten Mietshäusern fanden sie alle ein Dach über den Kopf – teilweise mit 100 Personen auf nur vier Etagen. Für mehr reichte es auch nicht. Heute spricht man von Slums, denn die Häuser waren nicht nur überfüllt, sondern auch in einem miserablen und sehr unhygienischen Zustand.  Fast jedes zweite Kind starb an Cholera oder Typhus. Das Leben auf der Lower East Side war dramatisch.

Ist die Lower East Side gefährlich?

Nein! – Aber sie war es. Sehr sogar, denn die Kriminalität war über viele Jahre völlig außer Kontrolle; den Bezirk Five Points, der die Vorlage für den Film „Gangs of New York“ lieferte, wurde von hoch kriminellen Banden regiert. Wer es irgendwie möglich machen konnte, verzog in eine andere Gegend.

Dies änderte an den überfüllten Tenements jedoch wenig;  die frei werdenden Wohnungen füllten sich sofort mit neuen Einwanderern. Doch auch viele, viele Jahre nach den Zeiten der Straßengangs war die Lower East Side bekannt für Drogenkonsum, Kriminalität und Prostitution. Seit Bürgermeister Guiliani hier hart durchgegriffen hat, sieht die Welt anders aus. Die Lower East Side ist mittlerweile eine sichere Gegend.

Einwanderer und ihre Spuren

Die jüdischen Einwanderer waren in der Mehrzahl auf der Lower Eastside, was dazu führte, dass zwischen 1870 und 1920 hunderte von Synagogen, religiöse Schulen, jüdischen Zeitschriften und Bäckereien gebaut wurden. Diese sind heute alle vergessen, jedoch sind einige Spuren der jüdischen Bewohner der Lower East Side noch nicht ganz verwischt.

Es verschlägt einen dann jedoch einen Steinwurf entfernt in das sich immer mehr ausbreitende Chinatown, das mittlerweile viele Teile der Lower East Side für sich beanspruchen muss, da es sonst aus allen Nähten platzen würde. So auch die Eldridge Street Synagoge, eine der ältesten erhaltenen aschkenasischen Synagogen in den USA. Von 1986 bis ins Jahr 2007 hat man den heiligen Ort restauriert, so dass ein Besuch dort heute wirklich sehr empfehlenswert ist. Das Untergeschoss wird heute für Gottesdienste genutzt, im Hauptsaal „museal“ ist ein Museum entstanden: das „Museum at Eldrige Street“ (mehr dazu später).

Von dort noch etwas weiter östlich Richtung Canal Street lohnt sich ein Abstecher zur Sender Jarmulowsky Bank (Ecke Canal & Orchard Street), denn von dort aus belieferte man bis ins Jahr 1914 die jüdischen Immigranten mit Essen. Heute nutzt man das Gebäude für kommerzielle Zwecke. Die Büros der Jewish Daily Forward, eine jüdische Zeitung mit hoher Auflage in den Zwanziger Jahren, verbergen sich im Forward Building (175E Broadway, Ecke Canal Street). Heute befinden sich hier Luxus Apartments.

Die Lower East Side heute

In den Achtzigern bewohnten hauptsächlich Asiaten, Mexikaner und Juden das Viertel – ein multikulturelles Zusammenspiel in der urbanen Lower East Side. Hipster Bars und kleine Clubs eröffneten rund um die Ludlow Street – eine tolle Ergänzung zum hippen East Village. Die Szene dieser Zeit existiert noch heute in Locations wie dem Bowery Ballroom, oder dem Cake Shop.

Die Mieten sind über die Jahre, wie überall in der Stadt, extrem gestiegen – viele der hippen Bars konnten dem nicht Stand halten und mussten schließen. Die jüdischen Einwohner wanderten in Gegenden wie Williamsburg ab. Chinatown breitet sich immer mehr über die imaginären Grenzen zur Lower East Side hinaus aus.

Heute ist die Lower East Side aber auch ein Kunst Mekka. Dutzende von Kunstgalerien eröffneten in der Gegend in den letzten Jahrzehnten. Ein Grund, warum 2007 das Museum of Contemporary Art Chelsea den Rücken kehrte und auf der Bowery ein 50 Millionen Dollar Gebäude bezog.

Warum nicht mal von Galerie zu Galerie hüpfen? Das Galerie Hopping ist auf der Lower East Side sehr beliebt. Auf Eurer Entdeckungstour sind das die sehenswürdigsten Spots, die ihr Euch anschauen solltet. Die sehr urbane, extravagante Kunstszene ist nicht nur etwas für Kunstliebhaber. Egal, für welche Galerie ihr Euch entscheidet, ihr werdet begeistert sein.

Das Tenement Museum und mehr

Ein sehr einzigartiges Museum ist das Tenement Museum. In dieser beeindruckenden Location, erfährt man mehr über die generationsübergreifenden Lebensumstände der New Yorker Immigranten im 19. Jahrhundert. Man fühlt sich ein wenig wie im Film “Gangs of New York”. Die Touren sind alle geführt und sehr informativ. (Adresse: 90 Orchard Street)

Das Museum at Eldrige Street erinnert an die jüdische Geschichte des Stadtviertels, die Bedeutung des Synagogengebäudes und an die Geschichte der Einwanderung in die Vereinigten Staaten. Das Museum befindet sich in der gleichnamigen Synagoge und verschafft einen guten Überblick über die Hintergründe des Lebens der jüdischen Einwanderer (Adresse: 12 Eldridge Street).

Das New Museum of Contemporary Art ist allein schon aufgrund seiner Architektur einen Besuch wert. Das siebenstöckige Gebäude passt optisch rein gar nicht auf die Lower East Side. Am Abend blüht die Lower East Side erst richtig auf, denn das unkonventionelle Nachtleben hat es in sich und gilt als eines der bekanntesten der Stadt. Eine der beliebtesten Locations Live Music ist der Bowery Ballroom (Adresse: 6 Delancey St). Der ehemalige Ballsaal bietet jede Woche viele sehenswerte Konzerte. Etwas rockiger geht es im Cake Shop (Adresse: 152 Ludlow Street) zu. Auch hier spielen regelmäßig tolle Live Bands, die von den großen Bühnen der Welt träumen. An den Cake Shop angeschlossen befindet sich ein Plattenladen und ein Café mit köstlichem Kaffee. Lest hier alles zu den kommenden Events.

Die Mercury Lounge (Adresse: 217 E Houston Street) überzeugt mit Indie – Rock Events der Extraklasse und ist die Nummer Eins auf der Lower East Side. Hier sollte man die Tickets für die Konzerte auf jeden Fall im Voraus kaufen. Aufgrund der Beliebtheit kann man sonst schon mal vor vollem Haus stehen. Hier gehts zu den Veranstaltungen.

Neben den tollen Locations für Live Events hat die Lower East Side aber auch noch viele sehr angesagte Bars zu bieten.

Nicht einfach zu finden, da sich der Eingang in einem Hinterhof befindet, ist die Back Room Bar (Adresse: 102 Norfolk Street). Ein echter Insider Tipp! Achtet auf das Schild: „The Lower East Side Toy Company“ – geht durch das Tor hindurch und folgt dem schmalen Durchgang. Eine Tür ohne Schild ist dann er Eingang zur Bar. Dort trinkt man übrigens die Cocktails aus Teetassen und Bierflaschen werden in braunen Tüten serviert. Ein sehr eigensinniger Ort, jedoch die passende Location, um die Lower East Side zu repräsentieren.

Über die Loreley (Adresse: 7 Rivington Street) habe ich Euch schon im letzten Sommer in Bezug auf die Fußball Weltmeisterschaft berichtet. Der Kölner Michael Momm betreibt hier seit vielen Jahren erfolgreich diese Deutsche Bar mit angeschlossenem kleinen Biergarten – er zeigt regelmäßig Fußballspiele und andere Sportevents. Für mich ist immer ein Stückchen Heimat. Weitere lohnenswerte Bars sind die Attaboy Bar (Adresse: 134 Eldridge Street), sowie der Pub Spitzer´s Corner (Adresse: 101 Rivington Street). Schnäppchenjäger aufgepasst!

Ein gestandener New Yorker weiß, wo er seine Schnäppchen kaufen kann und das ist ganz klar die Lower East Side. Die wichtigste Straße, die ihr Euch in diesem Zusammenhang merken solltet, ist die Orchard Street. Sie gilt auch gleichzeitig als die „Hauptstraße“ der Lower East Side.

Im Alife Rivington Club (Adresse:158 Rivington Street) gibt es einer bunte Auswahl trendiger Freizeitkleidung von Nike bis New Balance sowie interessante eigene Labels des Clubs.

The Cast (Adresse: 71 Orchard Street) ist etwas für Motorrad Fans, denn die Rock´n´Roll inspirierte Kollektion des Inhabers Chuck basiert auf seiner Leidenschaft für den Motorsport. Klassische Lederjacken und coole Jeans sind nur ein kleiner Teil des Geschäfts.

Wer Hoodies liebt, wird The Hoodie Shop (Adresse: 181 Orchard Street) mögen, denn hier könnt ihr Euch zwischen rund 50 verschiedenen Hoodie Marken entscheiden. Die Auswahl ist riesig. Hier finden übrigens auch oft Late Night Shopping Events mit DJ und Cocktails statt.

Das Schuhparadies der Lower East Side ist Moo Shoes (Adresse: 78 Orchard Street), aber auch Reed Space (Adresse: 151 Orchard Street) hat eine ansehnliche Auswahl zu bieten.

Ausgefallene Kosmetik, entwickelt von Make-Up Artist David Klasfeld, wird auf der Lower East Side gerne bei Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (174 Ludlow Street) gekauft. Die Produkte sind 100% frei von Tierversuchen und vegan. Von Lip-Balsam bis hin zu 40 verschiedenen Farben von Nagellack geht hier jeder Frau das Herz auf.

Und sonst?

In den Sommermonaten empfiehlt sich ein Spaziergang in den historischen Hamilton Fish Park, der seit 1936 für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist.

Freibäder findet man in New York oftmals ganz öffentlich ohne zusätzliche Kosten in Parks. So auch im Hamilton Fish Park –  der Pool lockt im Sommer Badefreudige aller Altersklassen, um an den heißen Tag in New York abzukühlen (Adresse: 128 Pitt Street).

Auch die Nähe zum East River reizt mit einer tollen Aussicht auf Williamsburg und die Williamsburg Bridge. Wenn ihr die East Houston Street hinunter lauft, kommt ihr direkt zum East River Park.
