Chapter 1

You had been planning this trip for months. it had been almost two years since you and your friends had gone on a well-deserved weekend getaway, and the time had finally come to escape to the wilderness together.

This year, you, the kiszkas, and their respective counterparts had chosen to rent a cabin way up in the Allegheny Mountains. It took over an hour to get to the beautiful three-story pine home once off the main road. “Perfect”, you thought. “No service, no neighbors, no stress”.

The only single people attending this year just so happened to be you and Jake. You had just broken up with your not-so-awesome boyfriend 2 months ago, and Jake hadn’t had a steady partner since, well, you. Sometimes you caught yourself getting flashbacks of the rendezvous that was your and Jake’s short-lived relationship, and you hated to admit that it made you woozy. Almost three years ago, after being friends your whole life, you and Jake decided to give it a go with officially dating. Of course, you were already so used to being around each so often that it was like normal day-to-day life, just with wild, spur of the moment sex involved. You weren’t upset about it, but it was almost like the friends with benefits essence never grew into anything more. The romance was there, but you were ready for commitment. After only 7 months together, you got into an argument that ended in calling it quits. Luckily, with the help of his brothers and your best friend, you stayed cordial and remained very good friends.

“Hurry up, it’s freezing out here!” Josh yells at you while you fidget with the lockbox on the house. “Whose idea was it to go on vacation in the middle of fucking blizzard season?” You roll your eyes at his impatience as you push the large door open and walk inside. “Leave her alone Josh GOD you’re so annoying!” Josh had begun dating your best friend, Kayla, about 8 months ago. You don’t know why you hadn’t thought to hook them up sooner, but the way they caught each others gaze that night at the state fair, it was like the earth moved, and they moved with it.

Josh slapped her on the ass and followed her into the cabin. Behind you stumbled in Sam, Danny, and their long-time girlfriends, Taylor and Jezz. They were a bit younger than you, but not by much. You had accepted them into your little family, and Sam and Danny were both overjoyed to know that you approved of their choices. You were actually very content with life at this point..you had a steady job, cute apartment, and you were actually happy with your friend group. It was nice having a group of girls (including your best friend) who you could be yourself around. No judgment, no gossiping, no cattiness, just real genuine friendships.

Danny flicked on all the lights, and your group gathered around the large table in the kitchen of the cabin. “So, ladies. You all are in charge of dinner tonight, and we-the gentlemen that we are-have agreed to serve you the finest wine that the gas station had to offer”. Sam said as he started pulling bottles upon bottles out of brown bags.

“How very kind of you to volunteer yourselves for the ‘dirty work’”, Kayla said with an eye roll. “You best keep my glass full all night!”

“Won’t be a problem, miss.” Sam took off his toboggan and tossed it in Kayla’s face. You gave Kayla a look only best friends could share- you and wine have a strenuous relationship.

The night was going well. The guys gathered around the table and had begun a very heated game of beer pong while you and the girls were busy fiddling around the kitchen cooking, laughing, dancing to whatever rap playlist Jezz had on her phone, and drinking way too much wine. You could already feel your face getting warm when you felt a hand grace the lower half of your back. You turned quickly to find Jake standing less than a foot from your face, wine bottle in hand. “Refill, miss?”

You coyly eyed him and brought your glass between the two of you. He found the lip of the glass with the bottle, and refilled it without breaking eye contact with you. “Shit.” you thought to yourself. “He is so beautiful”.

“What is this, your fifth glass now? I can see your cheeks getting pinker with each refill.”

“Shut up, asshole. I’m not drunk yet!” you replied with confidence in your voice. “Besides, dinner is ready and it will sober me right back up.”

Jake gave you a side eye and smirked his damned crooked smile. “I remember how you get on wine, don’t you try to fool me darlin.”

He turned away and began to make his plate. It was true. You and wine had a flip-flopped relationship. Every time you decided to break away from your normal beer of choice or jack & coke go-to and drink a bottle of wine, you and Jake always ended up twisted in the sheets drenched in sweat and laughter. It made you the warmest form of yourself, giggly and full of pure happiness.

After dinner (and three glasses of water for you) the group switched gears and decided to play a card game that Taylor had brought along. It was a competitive couples game that involved sexy and sultry questions and some truth or dares.

“Well, looks like you and Jake have to be partners because, well obviously you’re the only single two,” Danny said, and his statement trailed off. “No shit Sherlock,” Jake replied with a chuckle, and shook his head at you. “Does that plan suit you, this evening ma’am?” Jake asked you as he leaned back in his chair, put his arm behind you and took a sip of his whiskey rocks.

“I mean I guess we don’t have a choice, do we?” you replied. The game went on normally, with silly dares intertwined with “what is your most exhilarating sexual secret” type questions. It was filled with embarrassing laughs and old memories of regretful nights with crazy exes. You had started back on the wine, with a little push from your girl friends. Kayla poured you another glass of red. When you met her eyes with a glare, she shrugged her shoulders as if to say “ah, fuck it.” And the more you sipped, the more you realized she was right. You’re an adult, everyone here has gotten very close. This was vacation. And you were relaxing.

“Your turn, Jake. Draw a card.” josh said to his twin. Jake drew. “What is your first and foremost more memorable sexual experience, and why?” The table went quiet for a good 15 seconds while everyone awkwardly looked between you, Jake, and into their glasses.

“Well, uh, it would probably be the night that all you assholes left y/n and I on top of of mountain after that bonfire to clean up and put the fire out.” Jake went on.

Josh chimed in, “Oh yeah! Y/n’s college graduation night. Sorry about that. But if I remember correctly, you didn’t get home until the sun was coming up the next morning, am I right?”

Jake blushed somewhat. “Yup!” he replied with a harsh pop of the ‘p’.

You felt heat rising in your cheeks, too, as you reminisced on that night that you and Jake woke up sharing a blanket in the back of his jeep. It was the first night you had broken through the “just friends” gate and one silly game of rock-paper-scissors to see who would pick up the rest of the beer cans turned into a play fighting match that left you falling into his strong arms and melting into a kiss that felt like you were levitating 10 feet off the ground. After multiple beers each and sharing almost a whole bottle of whiskey, things took a turn and your graduation night turned into a one that’s now burned into your brain forever.

“Let’s get in the hot tub!” Sam screamed and broke the awkward silence that had fallen on the table. You shook the memories from your head as everyone stood up in unison and made way to change into suits and trunks. You stood up quickly and noticed the rush of blood to your head from the mix of alcohol, embarrassment, emotions, and now adrenaline at the realization that the most memorable and romantic night of your life just so happened to be the same one as Jake’s.

Jezz and Taylor ran to their room to change and Kayla pulled you along to the top floor to change clothes. “We’ll be down in a sec!” She yelled back down to the boys. The second you had grabbed your suit and went into the bathroom to change, Kayla ran in behind you and slammed the door shut. She stood with her hand behind her on the doorknob, back pressed against the door with a huge grin on her face. She stared at you with pure excitement in her eyes. “WHAT??” You basically yelled at her before bursting into laughter together. You quickly covered your mouths at the risk of being too loud in your drunken stupor of laughter. “Y/n!!!! HOLY SHIT!! Did I just hear what I think I heard?! Did Jake just bring up your past in the most romantic way possible in front of EVERYONE?!”

You couldn’t do anything but smile at her. The rush of emotions of the evening had you flabbergasted. Did you still have feelings for Jake? Kayla grabbed your shoulders and looked at you as if she could hear your thoughts. “I think you still have feelings for him…don’t you?” Damn, she really could read your thoughts. “I…I don’t know! I guess? Maybe? Ugh I don’t know.” You sat down to pee. “I mean it’s probably just old flame feelings coming back from the past, right?” You asked rhetorically. Kayla was stripped naked changing into her suit. God, you always envied her slender yet curvy body with almost perfect proportions. Kayla replied, “maybe so, but, we’re on vacation. You’re both very single for once. We’re all coupled up. Why not have a little fun? Besides, Josh told me that Jake talks about you almost nonstop.”

“WHAT?! I mean, what? He does?” You asked.

“Yeah, just casually brings you into conversation and mentions your name a lot.” Kayla was fully changed into her blue bikini. “Y/N, the universe is working for you right now. Why not embrace it and have a little reckless fun? I know how you get on the wine, anyway.” She winked, opened the door, and left you sitting in a pool of emotions on the toilet. She was right. The wine had almost taken all your inhibitions away at this point, so you changed into your sexiest bikini (a red string one with black stripes accentuating all the right places) and trudged down the stairs with a new found air of confidence. “Fuck it,” you whispered to yourself.

You crept through the sliding glass window to find everyone already in the oversized hot tub. “HEYY y/n! Finally! Hey you mind grabbing us that other bottle of whiskey?” Josh asked as you closed the door. “SHIT it is cold out here!” You exclaimed as you walked across the almost-frozen wood porch. The frost on the porch on your feet made you feel tingly inside, and tingly in other regions, as well. You grabbed the bottle of whiskey and also a new bottle of red blend for yourself. Jezz spoke up, “y/n, I already got us a bottle opened!” You opened the cheap screw-top lid till it was almost all the way off, then flicked the lid off the bottle and into the abyss of the woods by the cabin. “That’s alright, I’ll drink this one.” you replied.

Jake’s eyebrows raised for a fraction of a second. You let your towel down to reveal your bikini and you flipped your head upside-down to put your hair in a high top knot bun. You made sure to turn your ass straight to every one in the jacuzzi. When you popped back up, turned, and stepped into the 100° water, all eyes were already on you.

Sam spoke up, and said “OK Jezz, your turn!” Apparently they had brought the card game out with them. Great.

Jezz read her card. “Pick an opponent to remove one article of clothing. If not, they drink. Ok-I pick Taylor!”

Taylor grunted in an agitated belly laugh and half walked, half swam over to her boyfriend Sam. “Babe, care to undo me?” She motioned to the neck tie on the back of her bathing suit. “Go big, or go home, right?” She let both of her boobs fly freely. That girl never did get embarrassed about a thing, anyway. A collective “wooo!” fell from all the guys mouths. To be honest, it wasn’t the first time you had all seen Taylor topless. She tended to lose her clothing the drunker she got.

“Alright Y/N pick a card!” Taylor swam back to her seat in the hot tub. You flicked the water droplets off your hand as to not soak the cards. The hot water seemed to heighten your inebriation to a stellar level. Not to mention seeing Taylor’s girls out freely turned you on a little bit, and the voice in the back of your head spoke up again, “fuck it”. You reached over to the table, and drew a card. You vision was blurry, but you felt good. You felt empowered. You felt comfortable. You flipped the card over and read aloud, “have the last person in the group who spoke to ask YOU, the card drawer, truth or dare. Don’t hold back.”

You paused, and your eyes scanned your friends sitting impatiently in the hot tub. “Taylor, I guess that was you, girl. Ask away.”

Taylor sat up slightly in her seat to allow more of her cleavage to show above the swirling hot water. “Ooo, okay. Truth or dare?”

Your eyes fluttered to Kayla, then to Jake. He had a look in his eye that you were very familiar with, pupils as black as night. “Fuck it..dare”.

“A wonderful choice, my love. I dare you to pick one person in the hot tub, and do the sluttiest thing you’ve ever done, to them.”

Your heart sank in anticipation. If your hands weren’t already underwater, they would be sweating with nervousness. You took a big swig of the wine and set it back down on the table behind you. Again, you scanned the eyes that had now since forgotten the state of toplessness Taylor was in. You wracked your brain for old pornos you had watched, old stories you had read, or any bad teen-movie from the early 2000’s that might help you think of something slutty to do. They all watched you back with anticipation. Suddenly it hit you.

“Sam, hand me the bottle of whiskey?” He quickly obliged. You began, “eenie meenie miney moe…” you pointed to each of your friends as you said each word, hoping, PRAYING, that it would land on Kayla. “Catch a tiger by the toe. If he hollers, let him go…eenie meenie…” your words became slower and slower as you pointed…”miney…moe…”

Thank God. You landed on Kayla. You locked eyes with her and spoke to her with the eye contact that both of you were so accustomed to after 15 years of friendship.

You tilted the whiskey back and took a large swig, but held it in your mouth. With the bottle in grasp, you stood up proudly and waltzed over to Kayla. When you got to her, she looked up at you with doe eyes. You kept the whiskey burning in your mouth, but tilted you head back enough to speak, “Open..” you looked back down at her, and took your index finger to the bottom of her chin. You tapped it so she tilted her head back further. You proceeded to spit the hot liquor into her mouth, almost all of it making it in. She never broke eye contact with you. Once all the liquor had been passed from you to her, she closed her mouth slightly, with some of it trickling down her chin. She put her head back down, and wiped away the excess. “Swallow for me, babes.” She obliged. You slowly tapped your index finger to the underside of her chin again. “Very good..” you refused to break eye contact. You lightly grasped her chin in your hand and gave it a small shake and squeeze while she swallowed again.

When you came back down to earth after performing the sluttiest act you ever have on your best friend (in all honesty, that wasn’t THE sluttiest thing you have ever done, but to keep things light and fun for the sake of the rest of the evening, you went with your gut on this one), your ears fell upon silence. Nothing but the dim speaker still playing music in the background and the sound of the jets swirling the water and bubbles around. The other 7 people in the hot tub were dead silent, until Josh spoke up, “Wow, that was…” he trailed off. “I’m, that was pretty, slutty, Y/N.”

You slowly drifted back to your seat to await whatever type of backlash you might receive from your teasing friends. Thankfully, Kayla broke the awkwardness.

“HOLY SHIT Y/N, that was fuckin HOT!” You could always count on your wild best friend to pick up on your feelings no matter the situation. You blushed, finally, and giggled to yourself realizing the embarrassment now.

You looked at the remaining faces in the hot tub, and landed on Jake’s gaze. The look on his face was something out of this world. He looked ravenous, ethereal, shocked, and turned on all at once. It was like he saw you in a brand new light, one that could only be seen in the darkness. You felt proud and insanely satisfied that you were the one to cause him to look at you that way. But you couldn’t let your mind stray too far.

As the game went on, everyone kept making comments of how they ‘couldn’t upstage that dare’ and ‘won’t be as sexy as spitting liquor into someone’s mouth’. It made you beam with confidence. You were glad you listened to the “fuck it” in the back of your mind. As everyone started to get sleepy and retreat to their respective rooms for the evening, the last 4 in the hot tub were you, Kayla, Josh, and Jake. You had started to feel the after effects of the alcohol wearing you down, and you rested your head back on the edge of the tub. It was silent for a few minutes while everyone seemed to relax after the long day of travel and drinking. You closed your eyes and began to slightly drift.

“Welp, babe, you ready to hit the sack?” Josh asked Kayla. They began to get out of the tub. They wrapped towels around themselves and scurried across the now frozen porch. “Night you two!” Kayla looked back with a wink. You and Jake sat in silence for another minute before he finally spoke.

“You know, you’re different now.”

“What does that mean? No I’m not.” you answered, keeping your eyes closed.

“Yeah, you’re more..confident. I dunno. You’ve always been sure of yourself, but now, now something is bigger. It’s like you’ve kind of…blossomed.” Jake said. He used hand motions to imitate a flower blooming when he spoke the word ‘blossomed’. You giggled, now more unsure of yourself than you had been all night.

“Well, thank you I guess? Blossoming is good. I’ve grown up a lot since..” your voice trailed off. You did not want to bring up your past with Jake. It was a bad ending, but you wanted to stay friends and keep everything just as it was.

He continued, “When you got with what’s-his-face I-“ you cut him off.

“You what, Jake?”

“…I was..I don’t know. Upset? Jealous? It was like you moved on so quickly after us. I thought we had a really good thing and I know I messed us up but..” he was spattering his words.

“You didn’t mess us up. We were younger, and we let a dumb argument come between us. It wasn’t either of our faults, it just…happened. I don’t hold it against you.” you relayed.

“I know. But I just..” Jake was moving closer toward you now. He stopped, sitting right between your legs in the water. You just looked at him. He moved the bubbles that had started to collect on the top of the water around with his fingers, and let out a big sigh.

“I sometimes wish that if I could go back in time, I would have run after you that night when you sped off in your car. My pride was just..” He trailed off again. You had never seen Jake be so vulnerable with his words.

You felt compelled to grabb his face in your hands. You brought him closer to you so you could speak directly to him. He slid slightly on the slippery floor of the hot tub, falling closer in to you so you were now inches away from his face. His hands landed high on your thighs to steady himself. “Jake, I don’t resent you at all. And since we broke up, I’ve learned so much about myself and what I want and what I don’t want..I’m so glad we’ve been able to stay in each other lives. Even though sometimes, I wish you would have chased me down that night and stopped me from running awa-“ he cut you off with a small peck to your lips. It happened quickly, like he had done it on accident. You met his gaze with surprise, but both of your eyes had the same reaction-familiar love. You paused for a second, then slowly pressed back into his lips with fervor. Your hands were still on his face, holding him steady. He began to smile against your lips as he giggled with relief.

“You don’t know how bad I’ve been wanting to do that.” You understood with just the sound of relief in his voice that he truly meant what he said. He pulled away again. “If I could keep you around for just long enough to show you what you mean to me, I would-“ you cut him off again. This time you kissed him with passion. With familiarity. With heat. He brought his hands to your face and slowly moved them into your hair, slightly pulling you into him and the kiss got more heated. You reached up to your hair that was still in a messy bun, undid the tie, and let your long hair flow across your shoulders without breaking the kiss. He growled at the sight. You parted your lips just slightly and ran your tongue along his bottom lip. He broke away, “Y/N, I don’t think you understand how much I truly care for you. I never said how sorry I was about that night.”

You responded, “I know. It’s okay. Water under the bridge. You’re my best friend.” You shrugged off his statement. Thinking back, it truly wasn’t that horrible of a fight that happened that night, but you were both too stubborn to admit you were wrong. You weren’t mad at him in the least. Feeling his lips against yours again for the first time in years lit a fire in you that you had forgotten about, one that you only had when you were with Jake. One that felt, right. You brought him in for a good, honest embrace. After a few seconds, you asked,

“Jakey..?”

“Hmm?” He hummed into your shoulder. He was holding your hug tightly.

“Can I sleep in your bed with you tonight?”

He pulled back from your embrace and looked you deeper in your eyes than you have ever been looked at before.

His stupid side smile appeared on his face and he peered up at you with a new fire in his soul.

“I want nothing more than that.” He said.

At that, he sat back against his seat in the hot tub, pulling your hands along with him. He positioned you in his lap quickly. You laughed a hearty laugh at the muscle memory you had with him. You kissed him again, this time with no boundaries. Your tongues reached far into each others mouths exploring all the places they at one time knew so well. Your hands moved from his face, to entangling in his hair, to moving down his chest and around his waist. His hands were exploring your body like it was the first time. It was strange, being with him again. So familiar, yet so new. His fingertips grazed along the inside of your bikini bottoms, snapping them against your skin. You hissed at the contact. “Damn, I guess some things haven’t changed,” he said with a smirk.

“Shut the fuck up,” you responded with a giggle. You continued to make out, hands exploring each others bodies in effort to find out where it would lead. He slipped his hands under your bikini top and grasped your breasts with a quickness. The make out session was heated now. He pinched your nipples and twisted them simultaneously. Damn, he remembered just what you liked. You pulled his long hair into your fist and yanked his head back so he was peering up at you. You began working your way down his neck with wet kisses and bites of his skin, down onto his shoulder and pec. You reached your free hand down to find him hard underneath you. You smiled into his kiss. “Shut up, you know my weaknesses already, that’s not fair!” he exclaimed.

“I think I remember most, but I think there is a lot we still need to learn about each other, Jake. I’ve had some experience since you,” you said with a playful wink.

“Oh is that right? Well why don’t you introduce me to the new you?” he said.

You pulled back and looked into the eyes of your love. Your first, real true love. You already trusted him with everything you had, It just took a few years to figure that out.

“Carry me up the stairs like you used to” you answered.

“It’d be my pleasure,” he responded as he stood up and lifted you up out of the tub onto the frozen porch. You both slipped and slid down the walkway, quietly laughing and pushing each other toward the door. When you got to the entrance and inside, you shivered at the temperature change. He grabbed a towel and wrapped it around you. He slowly walked you backward and pressed you against the wall. He leaned his mouth in to your ear and whispered, “I intend on reminding you just how much you mean to me, and have always meant to me.” He pulled away and looked into your eyes in the darkness. He continued, “you’re the one that got away, Y/N. I’m not letting that happen again.”

Director Ben makes an announcement. Since two of the teams have been whiddled down to two competitors...

The teams are being merged!!

California and New York have their first alliance meeting, discussing who they think people should vote out next. On the target list? Florida. He's too much of a wildcard.

Today's Challenge: Who Can You Trust?

Random people as selected by Ben and Gov are being placed into teams of two or three. They must compete in Trust based exercises in order to win points. Of course, there are more interesting challenges.

Blind Trapeze, Blind Fall and Blind Toboggan. You can get a full 3 points for completing each challenge in 1 try, 2 points for 2 or more, and 1 for completing it in last place.

Teams are as follows, along with their results:

MA, VA, and PA: 8/9

NY and NJ: 7/9

CA and NM: 8/9

GA and FL: 9/9

LA and KS: 6/9

NE and KY: 7/9

The Winners: Georgia and Florida, so they have immunity from tonight's vote.

cast off!!! an on time cast off!

my sister and i are running a 2-person team in some upcoming toboggan races and i made us team hats. chart under the cut!

i had an idea for the pattern and messed around with chart-making software for the first time. (Stitchmastery, which I'm loving.)

the hat design itself I mostly cribbed off of Jelka size L, which happened to have the same stitch count that I needed for this 28-st repeat. My minor changes were: twisted rib for the brim, 6.75" before decreasing instead of 6.5", and also after trial and error found that size 6 (euro/4mm) needles for the brim and size 8 for the body was the right combo.

The first prototype I made with 4s & 6s was too small and the chart had zero give, so I also went from floating a max of 4 sts to floating a max of 3 (usually 2) and although a pain in the ass it did seem to help.

Finally -- I'm putting this as my first stash-busting project of the year because I used some of the old Cascade 220 that was in Fran's sweater ("Japanese Maple" I think? & the 2nd, lighter color in the pompoms is also from that sweater's leftovers), as well as the penultimate hank of my off-color wedding sweater Cascade 220! I finished the last hat with about 24" to spare, which was good cause when I pulled out the last hank to wind it I found it had disintegrated through like 10+ strands so it was gonna be a nightmare to salvage. I'm not sure if I'll hang onto that or not. Fully using 9 of 10 hanks of the bag is pretty great. I just looked up the order for fun and because the color was off spec I got the bag for under $60 in 2015. Not bad, not bad!!!

anyway in red is my very first draft and then in blue is what I ended with after messing with it a bit.

I'm so sick of colorwork right now but otherwise excited to use the software more! Since I knit left-handed (left-to-right) and always have to rewrite cable and lace patterns, I thought actually rewriting them IN the software would be a good way to learn it that would also be helpful for the associated project.

Huh. Just goes to show how being in a bigger/older fandom changes your fic prospects. I think the only reason Endlessly Caving In is so high is because it was part of a smut challenge on AO3. Or fewer people ship Teslen. 😅 Meh. 😊👍✌️

Cette pratique compte de nombreux bienfaits physiques et psychologiques pour les enfants. Le yoga a des effets positifs sur leur concentration, leur sommeil ainsi que leur souplesse. Il leur permet d’avoir un meilleur comportement au quotidien et diminue l'anxiété. Il améliore tout ce qui est coordination, équilibre, et fait prendre conscience de leur corps et de l'espace. L'enfant va apprendre à respirer et coordonner certain mouvement et tout ceci dans le jeu. Les séances doivent être courtes à mon avis 20 minutes suffisent du moment que l'enfant s'amuse. 10 TRUCS QUI PROUVENT QUE LE TRAIL EST UN SPORT DE DEGUEULASSES.

• 1. LA BOUE : sur les jambes, parfois sur les fesses. L’argument « boue » est alors dégainé pour en réalité cacher une vilaine gastro ou un pet foireux.

• 2. LES BOISSONS : des mélanges immondes que nos bidons ne peuvent pas supporter. C’est comme si un étudiant mélangeait tous les fonds de verres en pensant pouvoir être en cours de compta le lendemain.

• 3. LE SAC DE COURSE : préparé dans le plus grand respect avant l’épreuve mais lâchement abandonné de retour à la kasbah. Les champignons qui grandissent dans les bouteilles et tuyaux ne sont pas à déguster dans une omelette.

• 4. LES MASSAGES : plus d’huile que pour une semaine de fonctionnement d’un fast-food, 18 serviettes souillées et des poignées de portes désormais plus glissantes que le toboggan « pentaglisse ».

• 5. LES TOILETTES AVANT UNE COURSE : une expérience sensorielle rare, mélange de fierté et de honte.

• 6. LA CRÈME ANTI-FROTTEMENT : avant la course, on fait ça soigneusement à la salle de bain. Pendant, on dirait qu’on beurre généreusement un plat façon Maïté.

• 7. L’ASSIETTE EN CARTON AUX RAVITOS : cette assiette est tellement imbibée de traces d’urines qu’il est plus hygiénique de lécher un urinoir sur une aire d’autoroute.

• 8. LES SCOTCHS SUR LES TÉTONS : il y a toujours cette petite voix qui dit « et dire que tu rêvais d’être astronaute » et te voilà en train de bricoler du scotch devant un miroir.

• 9. LE MOUCHOIR : il sert à tout mais surtout à récolter des fluides variés qui proviennent d’endroits différents.

• 10. L’ODEUR : acceptable (ou agréable pour les plus tordus) quand il s’agit de la sienne, à vomir quand c’est celle des autres. Une pensée pour les kinés/ostéos/podologues qui doivent supporter cela tout en nous glissant des paroles motivantes. Des héros.

Und das wird durch die üppige Flora und Fauna auf der ganzen Insel sichtbar. Der Lorbeerwald „Laurissilva“ umfasst insgesamt ganze 20 Prozent der Insel und ist älter als 15 Millionen Jahre – Madeira ist das größte Gebiet mit dieser Art von Wald, der seit 1999 zum UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe zählt. Als Naturerbe Madeiras wurde er wegen seines Reichtums, Erhaltungszustands und seiner Vielfalt ausgezeichnet. Er kann im Norden und Süden der Insel besucht und durchwandert werden und bietet ein besonders schönes ökologisches Naturpanorama. Doch auch besondere Blumenarten wie die Strelitzie, Lilien, Callas und viele weitere, sowie grüne Terrassen mit landwirtschaftlichem Anbau ziehen sich über die ganze Insel und stehen im Kontrast zu den schroffen Bergen im Zentrum Madeiras. Freilebende Säugetiere findet man hier kaum, dafür aber eine atemberaubende Vielfalt an Vögeln – ideal für Vogelbeobachtungen auf der ganzen Insel. Kulinarische Genüsse Wer nach Madeira reist, kommt um die traditionelle, aber auch moderne Kulinarik der Insel nicht umher. Ein Klassiker der madeirensischen Küche ist Espetada. Ein Rindfleischspieß, bei dem das Fleisch auf einen Lorbeerast gespießt und über Holzkohle gegrillt wird. Serviert wird das Fleisch mit Kartoffeln und Salat. Für Fischliebhaber wiederum kommt Espada auf den Tisch. Der schwarze Degenfisch aus der Tiefsee ist eine Delikatesse der Insel und wird oft mit gebackenen Bananen und Maracuja serviert. Eine lange Tradition hat auch der Madeira-Wein, der als Aperitif oder Dessertwein getrunken wird. Geerntet werden die Trauben in der Regel von Ende August bis September, wo auch das traditionelle Weinfest stattfindet, das die auf Madeira produzierten Weine feiert. Eines der wichtigsten landwirtschaftlichen Erzeugnisse auf Madeira ist seit dem 15. Jahrhundert außerdem Zuckerrohr. Bis heute wird aus dem zuckerhaltigen Saft Zuckerrohrschnaps hergestellt. Dieser ist Bestandteil des Nationalgetränks „Poncha“. Zur Zubereitung wird mit einem speziell geformten Holzstößel je ein Drittel Zuckerrohrschnaps, der Saft von Zitronen oder Orangen und Honig gemischt. Kultur und Tradition Vor allem die Inselhauptstadt Funchal bietet Kultur und Unterhaltung und ist der touristische Mittelpunkt der Region. In den historischen Stadtvierteln mit Museen, Kirchen und Parks lassen Urlauber sich durch die kleinen Gassen treiben. In der Altstadt hat das Kunstprojekt „Portas Pintadas“ (bemalte Türen) frischen Schwung ins Zentrum gebracht. Im Rahmen der Initiative haben einheimische Künstler Türen und Fassaden der Häuser bemalt und die Straßen dadurch in eine Kunstgalerie unter freiem Himmel verwandelt. Wer eine echte Tradition und jede Menge Spaß erleben will, sollte sich eine Korbschlittenfahrt nicht entgehen lassen. Mit der Seilbahn geht es rauf zum Ortsteil Monte. Hier warten neben dem Tropischen Garten Monte auch die sogenannten „Carreiros do Monte“, die die Korbschlitten auf der zwei Kilometer langen Strecke steuern. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden die Korbschlitten als alternatives und schnelles Transportmittel für Personen und Güter erstmals verwendet, heute ist es eine weltberühmte Attraktion bei den Touristen.

Die portugiesische Insel Madeira liegt im Atlantischen Ozean vor der Westküste Afrikas. Gemeinsam mit dem Nachbareiland Porto Santo sowie den beiden unbewohnten Inselgruppen Ilhas Desertas und Ilhas Selvagens bildet sie ein Archipel mit 270.000 Einwohnern auf einer Gesamtfläche von 801 Quadratkilometern. Mit rund 741 Quadratkilometern ist Madeira die größte und zugleich die Hauptinsel dieses Archipels und knapp vier Flugstunden von Deutschland entfernt. Hier sind einige der wissenswertesten Zahlen über Madeira. 150 Tunnel verbinden Orte im Norden, Süden, Westen und Osten der Insel miteinander Die Vulkaninsel Madeira ist von schroffen Klippen, steilen Hängen und Bergen mit bis zu 1.862 Höhenmetern durchzogen. Um sie passierbar zu machen, wurden auf der gesamten Insel zahlreiche Tunnel gebaut. Auf ca. 100 Kilometern gibt es inzwischen 150 unterschiedliche Tunnel, wobei der längste mit 3,2 Kilometern die Gemeinden Faial und Santana verbindet. Der längste Doppeltunnel Madeiras mit rund 2,1 Kilometern hingegen ist der Tunnel zwischen Machico und Caniçal im Osten der Insel. Die zahlreichen Unterführungen begegnen Besuchern aber nicht nur beim Autofahren. Auch Wanderer sollten stets eine Taschenlampe mit sich führen, denn auf vielen Wanderstrecken Madeiras müssen sie ebenfalls stellenweise Tunnel passieren. 30 Wanderwege auf etwa 192 Kilometern Madeira ist 57 Kilometer lang und 22 Kilometer breit. Gebirge, Wälder, Blumenwiesen und steile Klippen bestimmen das Bild der Insel. Durch diese artenreiche und abwechslungsreiche Landschaft führen 30 Wanderwege auf etwa 192 Kilometern quer durch die gesamte Insel, was sie zu einer beliebten Wander- und Outdoordestination macht. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad der Wanderwege variiert dabei: Er reicht von einem gemütlichen Spaziergang bis hin zu Touren, bei denen Besucher auf bis zu 1.862 Höhenmeter wandern. Jahrhundert legten die ersten Siedler Madeiras Kanäle – die Levadas – an, um das im Norden der Insel reichlich vorhandene Quell- und Regenwasser zu den wasserarmen landwirtschaftlichen Anbaugebieten im Süden zu transportieren. Heute, fünf Jahrhunderte später, erreicht das Kanal-Netz inzwischen eine Länge von rund 3.100 Kilometern, von denen knapp 80 Kilometer durch Tunnel führen. In erster Linie wird das Wasser zum Bewässern der Felder sowie zur Stromerzeugung genutzt. Doch auch spektakuläre Wanderwege können Touristen entlang der Levadas entdecken, so etwa bei der Wanderung durch das Naturschutzgebiet Rabaçal zu den 25 Wasserfällen. Madeira ist bei deutschen Touristen besonders beliebt

Die Atlantikinsel Madeira ist bei Touristen beliebt, insbesondere bei deutschen Urlaubern. Zum ersten Mal in seiner Geschichte erreichte Madeira im Juli 2022 eine Million Übernachtungen innerhalb eines Monats. Dieses Rekordergebnis der Besucherzahlen sei ein beeindruckendes Indiz für die Rückkehr zur Normalität nach den dramatischen Einbrüchen durch die Auswirkungen der Corona-Krise, so das Madeira Promotion Bureau. Gleichzeitig setzte sich der positive Trend fort, der sich im ersten Halbjahr 2022 angedeutet hatte: Nie waren die Reiseziele Madeira und seine kleine Nebeninsel bei Besuchern aus aller Welt beliebter. Ein Vergleich der Besucherzahlen und Anzahl der Übernachtungen vor der Pandemie von Januar bis Juni 2019 bestätigt diese Entwicklung. Im Verhältnis zu den entsprechenden Zahlen des Krisenjahres 2021 zeigt sich, wie schnell sich der Tourismus beider Destinationen erholen konnte. Alle Vergleiche und welche Rolle deutsche Urlauber dabei spielten, verdeutlichen die nachfolgenden Zahlen. Im ersten Halbjahr 2022 besuchten insgesamt 846.170 Reisende Madeira, davon kamen 147.091 aus Deutschland. Dies führte zu 3.956.226 Übernachtungen, der Anteil der Bundesbürger betrug 857.273. Porto Santo zählte 44.747 Besucher (Deutsche: 3.635) und 192.691 Übernachtungen (Deutsche: 18.182). Im Vergleich zum Pandemiejahr 2021, als auf Madeira lediglich 203.517 Touristen und 889.308 Übernachtungen registriert wurden, bedeutete dies 2022 einen fulminanten Anstieg von 315,8 bzw. 344,9 Prozent.
