BJP Wins Gujarat But Short Of Century, Sweeps Himachal: 10 Points | Gujarat election
Textile traders had shut shop for a fortnight, the diamond market was losing its shine and there was a mood of despondency in Gujarat's business capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory for his BJP party in a key election contest in the western state of Gujarat, as well as in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. The Gujarat campaign had plenty of positives for the Congress as it prepares for key elections in 2018. BJP Wins In Gujarat, Just, Loses In PM Narendra Modi's Hometown.
The start was ominous as the benchmark Sensex crashed 867 points to go below the psychological 33,000 while the NSE Nifty plunged 258 points within one hour of counting of votes that showed both the parties were locked in a tight race. With these wins, the BJP increases the tally of states it is in power in to 19. But the party's performance in Gujarat and a reinvigorated Mr Gandhi offer some hope to a beleaguered and hopelessly outnumbered opposition.Congress leader Alpesh Thakor and independent Jignesh Mevani also score victory in Gujarat elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory for his BJP party in a key election contest in the western state of Gujarat, as well as in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.

The BJP, along with its allies, now runs governments in 19 states. The BJP was upbeat about wresting power from the Congress in poll-bound Karnataka after its victory in the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections on Monday. As BJP looks set to win in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the Karnataka BJP unit is not very pleased with the results.

He said that EVM are standalone machines and that they are not connected to any network and therefore they cannot be influenced over Bluetooth or wireless messages.
He further said that EVMs were only a glorified calculator and it goes dead after it is opened.

Gujarat elections: First phase on Dec 9th, second phase on Dec 14th; results to be announced on 18th
India's Election Commission today announced dates for Gujarat assembly polls to be held in December.
The Election Commission said the first phase of polls in Gujarat will be conducted on December 9th and the second phase on December 14th.
The counting of votes will be held on December 18th.
"No candidate can spend more than Rs 28 lakhs on campaigning," Chief Election Commissioner(CEC) AK Joti said.
"Model code of conduct is now in effect," the CEC added.
While declaring the Himachal election dates a few weeks back, the commission had announced that the counting of votes in both the states would take place on December 18.
The election body had come under attack from the opposition parties for not announcing the dates for Gujarat assembly elections along with Himachal Pradesh.
Election Commission officials had said that multiple factors, including the weather, were considered before deciding to hold the elections in Himachal Pradesh earlier than Gujarat.
Himachal Pradesh will go to the polls on November 9.

Election Commission seeks Centre's stand on Oppn budget delay demand
The Commission of India (ECI) has written to Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha, seeking Centre's stand on the Opposition's plea to postpone the Budget presentation to a day after March 8, the last date of polling in Uttar Pradesh. As per the ECI sources, this has been done by the Election Commission as per normal procedure. This move from the ECI comes just a day after a delegation of the opposition parties met all three Election Commissioners, Naseem Zaidi, OP Rawat and AK Joti. On Thursday the opposition demanded the date for India Budget News presentation be shifted till after the elections get over. The Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and others said they were not in favour of February 1 as the start of the budget session. Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said the negation has been put forward as it would lead to biased elections, which are against the constitution and democracy, adding further that they have no problem with any date post elections. "If the government wants, it can call session from 31. But, only the budget should be presented post March 8, as it is the last date of elections. It can choose any date after March 8 as it can announce it any day before March 31," he said. TMC leader Derek O'Brien resonated the same saying the Centre can present the budget after March 8, once the elections get over. "It is about 15-16 opposition parties together. There is a simple solution - the government has enough time to present the budget after March 8. It can get it passed before March 31. That is the fair way of doing," he said.
