SUNN O))) reissue their White albums in honor of Southern Lord’s 20th anniversary

Head’s up doom lovers: amplifier worshipers tephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) are back at their ritualistic reissue shenanigans! And this time, they’re reissuing none other than…the white album(s)(!).))) Er, White1 and White2, that is — the duo’s diptych of deconstructed doom classics from 2003 and 2004, respectively. The reissues coincide with the 20th anniversary of Southern Lord, the venerable label which the duo cO)))-founded; and, per the press release, these puppies are gonna sound so good — the grade-AAA, gourmet, artisanally aged, grass-fed sludge/drone of your dreams: For these reissues SUNN O))) took the original full-length unedited premasters/final mixes to Matt “The Alchemist” Colton at Alchemy Mastering in London for a complete high resolution 88K/24bit mastering and, crucially, cut the lacquers using Alchemy’s half-speed method on their Neumann SX 74 cutterhead. The outstanding results allow the original full-length mixes to be pressed at high fidelity on the vinyl format. The new WHITE masters reveal a broader frequency response, the bottom end is deeper and more intense, low mids are lusher, high frequencies are smoother, and the stereo image is vastly improved, seeming more three dimensional and more dynamic. The sound is clearer, sharper, more direct. The reissues will be available through Southern Lord as double LPs on white vinyl in editions of 1,000. The records will be housed in Stoughton Printing old style gatefold tip-on sleeves. Each also includes an A1 poster with classic portraits of the band from the period by Kerry O’Sullivan and Glynnis McDaris. T-shirts and other exclusive packages are also available. Other vinyl colors will be available later in July through other outlets.
