Ryan wouldn’t consider himself a particularly nosy person. His curiosity would just get the best of him occasionally.
It would get him in trouble sometimes. He would poke around until he would see or hear things he definitely did not want to hear.
He didn’t mean to snoop around your room, he was just trying to occupy himself while you got the wine glasses. He looked at the pictures you had sitting on your dresser; one of you and your mom when you were a kid, one of you and Teeter from high school, a picture of your childhood dog. Your vanity held all of your makeup products and perfumes.
He sat on the edge of your bed, picking up the picture you had framed on the nightstand. It was from your third date – a blurry picture that you took as you leaned across the console of his truck. You had his cowboy hat on and the cheesiest grin on your face. That was nearly four months ago, which he could hardly believe.
When Teeter told him she had a friend moving to Montana, he groaned. Not another Teeter, someone he could barely understand half the time. But then you walked into the bunkhouse and he swore his heart nearly came out of his throat. You were the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. The complete opposite of Teeter. Where she was loud and unapologetic, you were meek and non-confrontational. He never understood how you and Teeter of all people were best friends but when he saw the two of you together, it made perfect sense.
It took a few months of dancing around each other before he finally asked you on a date and the rest is history. It has been the happiest time of his life. You brought out the best in him, you always made him laugh. He was so lost in his thoughts he didn’t hear you step into the room.
“Whatcha doing with that, cowboy?” You asked teasingly. Wine bottle in one hand, glasses in the other. He returned the frame to its spot on the table and wiped his hands on his jeans.
“Just thinking.”
“About what?”
“About how I’m the luckiest man alive,” Ryan expressed. He made his way over to you, hands settling on your hips. You sat the wine and glasses on the dresser before wrapping your arms around his neck, fingers twisting in his curls.
“You’re a sap, Ry. Will you light that candle over there while I pour the wine?”
“Trying to set the mood, huh?” He said, cocking an eyebrow as his lips curved up into a smirk. You rolled your eyes and nudged him away, turning your attention to the drinks. You heard Ryan going through the drawer in your bedside table, searching for the matches most likely before he went quiet.
“They should be in the-” You stopped speaking as you faced him and saw he had your pink bullet vibrator in his hand, an unreadable expression on his face. You felt your entire body flush at the way his dark eyes stared deep into yours.
“What do we have here?” He asked, voice dropping an octave. It had that slight rasp to it that always made your thighs press together involuntarily.
“Ryan… That’s-”
“Oh, I am well aware of what it is, sweetheart.”
The quiet buzzing sound of the vibrator being turned on made your body jolt slightly. Ryan hummed and studied the machine in his hand, playing with the settings and looking up at you when he made it to the highest one. Your chest rose and fell rapidly and he hadn’t even touched you yet, he was still ten feet away from you.
Ryan stalked towards you slowly, testing the waters. Giving you enough time to stop him. But you didn’t. You weren’t going to.
As he stood in front of you, he pressed the vibrator against your collarbone. He slowly dragged it down your arm before going back up again. You weren’t sure if it was the tension in the room or the rapid vibrations, but your whole body was beginning to shake.
“Wanna play a little game?” Ryan asked in a low tone, his breath washing over your heated face.
“What kind of game?”
“Wanna see how long you can last while I’m using this on you.”
Ryan started circling the vibrator around one stiffened nipple, causing you to mewl and grip at his shoulders. Your knees weakened as he continued his ministrations to the other breast.
“Lay back on the bed, baby. Pull that pretty dress up.”
Your feet carried you to the mattress, your mind in a hazy state. Ryan’s eyes followed your every move, his gaze locking onto that spot between your thighs as you did as he instructed. Your underwear already had a wet spot that was noticeable even in the low light of the bedside lamp. His lips twitched into a smug smile.
“Already soaking through your panties. What are we gonna do with you?” His question was slightly condescending. In the months you had been together, you had been learning what each other likes. Turn ons and things you’d never want to try. You had mentioned offhandedly that you wouldn’t mind him to be a little mean, teasing you and using degrading words. And you knew from the way his eyes were squinting slightly, you knew you were in for it.
“You okay with this, honey? If it gets too much, we can stop at any time.”
“M’good, Ry. Really good.”
He braced one knee on the bed to lean over you, lips meeting yours in a searing kiss. His tongue teased at your bottom lip, but pulled away before you got the chance to deepen it. He pressed firm against your sternum until your back was flush with the bed.
Ryan turned the vibrator back on, this time with the lowest setting. He repeated his actions from before, starting at your jaw and working his way down to your breasts. He didn’t spend as much time there before he continued down the length of your body.
He teased along the insides of your thighs, biting his lip as that wet patch grew with every passing second. Your legs shook, whimpering and pleading for him to touch you where you needed him most.
“I bet you use this all the time, don’t you? Such a dirty girl.”
He pressed the tip right against your swollen clit through the cotton of your underwear, turning it up a couple of notches and relishing in the way your back bowed and your knuckles turned white against the comforter.
“Ryan- oh god, don’t stop. Please don’t stop!” Your hips bucked into the sensation, searching for that friction you so desperately needed. He wasn’t having that. He turned the vibrator off and gripped your cheeks firmly before you could protest.
“You’ll take what I give you, understand?”
“Mhm,” you mumbled.
“What was that?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good little slut.”
Ryan patted your cheek lightly before returning the vibrator to your clothed pussy. You bit your lip to stay quiet, to suppress your pleas. He moved it between your lips gently, barely applying any pressure. He turned it up again before prodding at your dripping hole through your panties. It makes your eyes roll back and a guttural moan escape your throat.
“I bet you wanted me to find this, didn’t you? You weren’t really hiding it. Listen to you whine so prettily. Can I take your panties off, baby?”
You nodded eagerly, raising your hips in anticipation. He pulled them down slowly and you felt a flush run over you at the way they stuck to your cunt.
Ryan groaned at the sight of your glistening heat. He spread your thighs impossibly wide, opening you up for him.
“So pretty… and so, so wet.”
“Ry- sir, please.” You pleaded, voice nearly unrecognizable to your own ears.
“Shh, honey. I’ll take care of you.”
He turned the vibrator on to the highest setting once more and pushed it inside you without preamble. Your hand shot down between your legs to grip his wrist, your head thrown back in blinding pleasure.
You let out a shriek of what you only assumed was his name. You weren’t sure what you were babbling at the moment. He alternated between the speed of his thrusts and the speed of the vibrator, keeping you right on the edge. His graying curls fell out of place and onto his forehead, his once bright blue eyes impossibly dark as he watched the way you clenched around the toy.
“Sir, I’m- oh fuck- I’m so- I-“ you whined pathetically.
“Yeah, you gonna cum? Do it. Cum for me, sweetheart.”
It overcomes you in an intense way. Galaxies explode behind your eyelids, you feel like you’re floating and drowning simultaneously. You can’t stop your whole body from trembling as Ryan slows his movements. A satiated feeling washes over you and you’re trying to control your breathing as you come down from your high.
Ryan presses a soft kiss to your burning cheek, gently massaging your hips as your body jerks involuntarily.
“So good for me. You okay? Was that too much?” His voice was laced with slight concern at your silence.
“That was- Ryan, that was- I don’t even have the words. You’re so fucking hot, oh my god.”
Your fingers tangled in his curls as you pulled him into you, burying your face into his neck and breathing in his scent. He pulled your dress down to cover you, a sweet gesture compared to what he just did to you.
“I really didn’t mean to find it. You gotta put those matches somewhere else.”
You laughed at his statement, pressing a kiss to his temple.
“I’ll remember that next time,” you said as you moved him to mold your lips to his in a passionate kiss.

Begin Again - Lee Dutton
Tumblr media
Pairing: Lee Dutton x OC (Natalie WentWorth)
Summary: The life of renowned lawyer Natalie WentWorth was quiet in Boston, but everything changed when she received a call from a former Harvard colleague, Jamie Dutton. After reflecting a lot, Natalie agreed to solve some problems at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, but she did not imagine that her life would change completely when she arrived in Montana. One of the reasons for this change was Lee Dutton, the eldest son of John Dutton, cowboy and livestock agent, who would represent all the comfort she needed to have in the midst of the chaos of the Dutton family. Natalie could begin again at that ranch.
Warnings: Subtle sexual innuendos, brief language, alcohol consumption, angst, smut, fluffy.
Fix the law after you break it
A few more kilometers and she would finally arrive in Yellowstone. Her Volvo XC40 exceeded the thousands of miles at a speed fast enough to make a journey of thirty-six hours of travel in less than thirty hours. Yes, she liked speed. It was one of the few things she allowed herself to "lose control". Her life experience and her profession had taught her to take care of her own control. If anyone would lose their mind, it would be the other side and not her.
She looked at the folder on the bank next to her. There was her name engraved on it: Miss Natalie WentWorth. She smiled proudly. She had not chosen the law, the law had chosen her. And her last civil hearing had proved it.
Natalie's thoughts were interrupted when she observed a movement a few kilometers ahead. There were men mounted on horses, armed, wearing bulletproof vests, on one side of the fence, and other men without any armament, but with unfriendly expression were on the other side of the fence. Natalie reduced her speed and a lawyer's sense of curiosity did not allow her to move forward, stopping on the shoulder.
Looking more closely, she realized that the men on the other side of the fence were indeed armed, some police officers and other civilians. She also noticed that there was a huge herd of cows on the side of the fence and she soon considered a problem. Natalie got out of the car and put her high heels on the dirt floor, something she wasn't used to.
"You should move on, ma'am. The thing here will soon be very bad." One of the cowboys warned her by jogging next to her.
"What's going on?" She asked ignoring his request.
"What happens every day here in Yellowstone: big dog fight." The cowboy waved his hat and trotted towards the discussion that was forming.
Natalie noted that the fence was free of barbed wire, so it would not be very difficult for cattle to go from one place to another. However, she doubted that the cowboys of that ranch had left the fence like that, just as it would be almost impossible for the cattle to take a different direction from what they took every day, unless someone attracted them with food. She got closer to the scene and noticed the remains of hay on the other side. Wow, a crime scene right on her first day in Montana.
"Madam, I'll ask you to leave, please." A serious and deep voice echoed behind her and she turned around. One of the men in the bulletproof vest was in front of her and at that distance she could read Livestock Agent on his chest. He carried a powerful rifle between his hands.
"As far as I know, the road is public." She responded without being able to see him right, because the strong light of the sun prevented her.
"This one is not. It belongs to the Reservation."
"Well, then they should take me out of here and not you...agent." Natalie replied pointing to the police and heard a low laugh coming from him. "Besides, I'm much more helpful here."
"I doubt that."
"OK, agent. I can tell what I know to the police officers of the Reservation and so they can win this fight." Natalie crossed the fence and walked a few steps on the pasture, but his voice came up again.
"I could get you out of there with little effort, ma'am!"
"Try it! Let's see what happens to you after that."
Natalie turned her back on the agent and approached the Indians of the Reservation, but seconds later a heated argument began. One of the Indians insulted one of the cowboys and he crossed the fence to attack him, but the Indian quickly knocked him out on the ground. The scene was transformed without Natalie being able to keep up. The police officers lifted their weapons, as well as the cowboys on the other side, but soon the agent came up with the rifle and threatened the Indian with his barrel on his head.
"Whatever happens next happens to you first." The agent threatened in a loud and deep voice.
"Son of a bitch." The Indian released the cowboy under his hands and faced the agent with danger in his eyes.
Tensions were stifled with the arrival of a helicopter on land. Natalie managed to read Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in the helicopter body and smiled playfully. What an unusual way to meet the boss. He got off the vehicle dressed as the good landowner he was, with simple clothes and a hat. The livestock agent went to meet him and exchanged some words that Natalie could not hear due to the distance and noise of the helicopter propellers.
The two men approached the fence and John exchanged glances with Natalie, surprised by her presence there, but he had more urgent matters to deal with than to know why a white woman dressed in a white satin blouse, navy blue pencil skirt and high heels was on the other side of the fence. She soon found out that she was on the wrong side of that fight, so she walked slowly towards the track, and she had difficulty walking due to her high heels sinking into the grass.
"This is a tribal issue, John. Livestock commission's got no authority here." One of the police officers informed John with caution.
"Those look like livestock to me." He pointed to the cattle on the other side of the fence and kept walking.
"The Chief's at Commencement, but I'm calling the shots."
"I'm impressed you said that with a straight face, Ben." John mocked with a smile and continued walking on the tribal ground until he approached a gentleman sitting on the hood of the truck that was among the cattle.
"If you know anything, it's better to say it now. Things won't be more friendly between us and them for much longer." The agent approached Natalie again and she remained looking at John's back, wishing to hear what he said, but it was too far away.
"If I say what I know, I lose the letter in the sleeve I have, don't you think?"
"Look, ma'am, I don't know where you come from, but here in Montana we solve the problems in two ways: either we follow the law, or we break it." The agent responded politely after a brief pause, as if he were thinking about what he should say. She liked it, he didn't want to push her away, he thought she was important enough to try to insist on the subject.
"I come from Boston...and from what I see now, you will need a good lawyer."
"I don't think we'll win this fight through laws, ma'am."
"You really won't go, so you'll need a lawyer: to fix the law after you break it. I have my card in the car, if you want."
The agent smiled openly, showing his white and big teeth. Very perfect for a cowboy and livestock agent, she thought. Either he spent all the money on dental appointments or...
"Lee Dutton." He supported the rifle in one hand and offered her the other. "Can I know your name, Madam from Boston?"
"Natalie WentWorth." She accepted his greeting and had her small hand engulfed by his big hand, tanned and full of calluses in a strong but gentle grip. "Don't worry, I'm on this side of the fence."
He just kept smiling and Natalie could watch him at that moment, since he covered the sunlight from her face. Lee was tall, although any man taller than one meter and seventy was taller than her, he wore a cream hat that covered most of his hair, and he wore a grown beard, blonde, and looked well cared for. And there was that smile that besides being beautiful, was cheerful. How could he be happy in that situation? She didn't know, but she was curious.
"Lee!" John Dutton's voice sounded authoritarian when he crossed the fence. "Clear everyone out."
"You know, there was barbed wire on this fence a week ago." Lee explained to his father.
"I know. Clear them out."
"Alright! Move on!"
While Lee gathered his men, Natalie hurried the step to accompany John Dutton, but her high heels did not help, so she removed them.
"Mr. Dutton! Mr... Dutton!" She called feeling her feet pincing due to the tall grass. After a few seconds, he stopped and waited for her to approach.
"It wasn't a good choice to wear these shoes today, ma'am." John mocked with a smile as he observed the high heels in Natalie's hands.
"I'm a newcomer to Montana, sir. I can get used to it." She put on her shoes and extended a hand to him. "My name is Natalie WentWorth. Your son Jamie told me that you were in need of help."
"All the help I need is in my house, ma'am. I don't need another lawyer." John seriously informed without accepting her hand.
"But I came here from Boston. Jamie told me that..."
"I don't know what Jamie wanted with you, miss, but it certainly has nothing to do with me or my ranch." He stared at her in a mixture of pity and anger. "If you want, we can take you back in the helicopter."
"I've been driving, sir."
"I'm sorry for what Jamie made you go through. I hope you have a good trip back." John put his sunglasses on his face and walked away from her with slow steps towards the helicopter.
Natalie was planted in the same place for so long that the police officers of the reserve had left, as well as the tribals and most of the cowboys. She couldn't believe that. After all the effort to get there, after thinking long before getting close to cowboys again, she was rejected. Natalie didn't know who else she was angry with, if it was Jamie, Mr. Dutton or herself.
"Miss WentWorth, is everything okay?" Lee appeared next to her and she had to control herself so as not to shrook another Dutton next to her.
"It'll be." She started walking again and heard his steps following her. She rolled her eyes and growled softly. "Go back to your work, Mr. Dutton. You're going to need a lot of work."
"What do you mean? Hey, wait!"
Natalie was already used to walking with high heels on the grass and was already approaching her car on the side of the side. However, to her misfortune, one Dutton was determined to leave her away while the other did not leave her alone.
"What did you mean?" He put himself between her and the driver's door.
"I need to go now, Mr. Dutton. Can I get in my own car?" She asked impatiently, but Lee remained in the same place.
"Only answer the question." Lee asked kindly, but Natalie was too angry to notice.
"I am not obliged by law to answer anything. And if you don't get out of the front of my fucking car now, I'll sue you for so many things that you'll never have a penny in your cowboy pants again." She threatened him fervently and Lee took a few seconds thinking to then clear the way. "Thank you, Agent."
"Aren't you going to give me your card?" He asked at the window when she got in the car.
"It will no longer be necessary."
Natalie started the gear and started the car, causing the tire to leave stains on the asphalt.

I doubt that many people here are interested, but I decided to post the equivalent of "fix it snippets" for Yellowstone. I never came up with whole fics for them, just like a couple hundred/thousand words because I kept getting mad at canon.
And allll pro- Jamie & Kayce being bros instead of having a total of 3- 4 scenes together in 5 seasons.

Shutting the top cabinet above the stove I opened the oven letting the fresh smell of baked biscuits fill most of the house. I heard multiple sets of footsteps begin rushing down the wooden and creaky steps before I saw Kayce, Tate and Faith all pile in the doorway of the kitchen. “I figured this would get y'all up this morning.”
“What did you make exactly. I swear I recognize that smell.” Kayce shifted the air trying to place the familiar scent.
I pulled the tray out and laid it down on the kitchen island. “You should know what these are quite well, Dutton.”
“Biscuits! How did you make my mother's biscuits?” Kayce’s face lit up with excitement and awe.
Laying down a rag on the kitchen island I held up the piece of paper that was inside the pocket slip of the apron I was wearing. “I found this in the cookie jar up on the fridge. It’s her handwriting and so I thought I’d give it a shot. So you’ll have to tell me if they’re crap or not.”
“Mmm.” Faith tore a piece of one biscuit and gave the other part to Tate before they both moaned at an enjoyable taste.
Kayce tore half of one apart and tossed the bite into his mouth where I saw a cheeky grin cross his face before he moved around the island cupping my face in his hands. “You’re amazing. Have I told you that?”
“Not recently I must admit.” I smiled back up at him before he pressed his lips down onto mine. He wrapped his arms around my body tugging me closer to his chest deepening the kiss.
Faith and Tate replied in disgust. “Eww!”
“You know what had to happen to make you two right?” I warned them feeling Kayce giving me a confused look when we had slightly separated from one another. “A whole lot of kissing.”
Faith corrected very off guard. “You mean when animals get together.”
“Faith!” I scolded her, feeling my face turning red.
Kayce shrugged his shoulders lightly, chuckling. “You should know they’ll learn all kinds of life growing up on a ranch.”
“Just because I know it doesn’t mean I want her to say it out loud. Uh, come on kids we gotta go to work.” I glared at him removing the apron and hanging it up on the hook.
Kayce picked his hat up from the hook, sitting it on his head and shrugging his jacket on. “I’ll see y’all later tonight - Alissa!” He called my name from the front porch barely having the front door shut behind him.
“Wait here.” I touched the kid’s shoulders crossing the living room and out onto the porch seeing two black police trucks pulled up at the edge of the steps and I saw an officer come up to us. “Can we help you, officer?”
He didn’t even look in my direction. “We’re here to make an arrest, Mrs. Dutton.” He moved around his back twisting his arms around his back, handcuffing my husband right in front of me.
“You can’t do this.” I told him watching him push him down the wooden steps to the police truck.
Kayce called over his shoulder, getting his head pushed inside the truck. “Alissa, call Jamie!” The truck door shut and I watched them drive off feeling my stomach twisting in knots so quotation like it had years ago.
“What do you mean you joined the Navy!” I gasped sitting on the couch with a large round pregnant belly considering I was at my 6th month mark on the calendar.
Kayce was standing in front of me in my parents cabin living room seeing I was clearly upset with him. “Alissa, I’m doing this for our family. For our little girl and you so that you don’t have to use my father’s money to raise her.”
“But we agreed we would raise her together. That's one of the reasons I accepted your proposal.” I throw my hands up in the air feeling tears welling in my eyes.
He noticed the tears coming to sit down on the couch beside me. “Lissa Rae, please don’t cry. Okay I’m not happy about it but I’m trying to do the right thing here.” He wrapped his arms around my shaking body and I buried my face into his shirt sobbing for a few minutes.
“Promise me! Promise me that you’ll fight like hell to come home to us when it’s all said and done.” I lifted my head up from his shirt clutching it under my fingers.
Kayce touched my face with his freehand, keeping one hand rubbing my back. “You don’t have to worry. I’ve never broken a promise to you and never will.”
“Thank you, Kace.” I mumbled snuggling up against his chest and he kept his arms around me just keeping his little family as close as he could for as long as he could before he was shipped off to the Navy.
“Wait out here and don’t go with any strangers.” I told the two kids who I had to sit down on a wooden bench outside the sheriff's office. They didn’t need to hear whatever they were accusing him of. I opened the door and shut it behind me eyeing the officers. “What exactly are you arresting him for?”
“We aren’t at liberty to disclose that with you, ma’am.” An officer responded.
I snapped with a sharp tongue. “I’m his wife. So you will speak to me about whatever the hell you are charging my husband!”
“I didn’t switch any barrel of a gun on purpose. So if you want to point fingers at someone he told me to do after someone told me that they found my gun bullets in Monica Long’s brother.” Kayce began explaining from the night that had killed Lee. John had cremated his body and a few days later he told me they asked to see Kayce’s gun when they did an investigation on how the other guy died.
“Did he waive his right to an attorney?” The office door suddenly opened and I watched his brother Jamie enter the room presenting the lead cop with his lawyer card.
The native guy named Rainwater throws his hands up with a scoff. “He requested an attorney and like magic one appears.”
“We can’t help that his brother went to Law School. Now can you please let my husband go because he hasn't done anything wrong.” I cut in the conversation.
Jamie glanced back at me. “What are the claims?”
“That officer is claiming that Kayce made him switch barrels with him to cover up the fact that he had to shoot the Long brother in self defense.” I entered the conversation standing behind Kayce’s chair.
Kayce ran a hand over his mouth. “When he told me to switch barrels with him I didn’t think you would then accuse me.”
“Kayce.” Jamie sent him a warning out of the corner of his eye.
I throw my hands slightly up. “It’s an easy fix and they’re trying to turn it into something bigger.”
“Is there any forensic evidence that ties my brother to the scene other than a ballistics match to your weapon?” Jamie asked and neither of the officers said a word where he got to his feet heading to leave the room. “You see where I’m going with this. If you have no real evidence then I think it’s time we leave. So switch barrels and everything will be cleared up here.”
The officer got up from his chair taking his gun out along with Kayce’s and slowly switched the barrels before he handed him the gun back. “I’m sorry.”
“Let’s go, you two.” Jamie touched his brother's back leading us outside. I took Faith and Tate by the hand until we were standing outside of the Dutton ranch truck. Jamie had called a car to bring him there. “Just remember that the next time you may get arrested, say nothing until I get there.”
Kayce nodded, looping my hand in his. “Thank you for helping me.”
“I’ll pay you back in biscuits. I managed to re-create your mothers.” I grinned leaning my head on his shoulder and Kayce nodded in agreement before Jamie smiled back at us.

The Beauty fell for The Beast || Whumptober Day 20 - R. Wheeler
whumptober masterlist
Tumblr media
synopsis: Rip has no idea what John saw in you to keep you at the ranch, but he quickly finds out that it's got nothing to do with how you cowboy
word count: 2.2k
@ailesswhumptober prompt: mutilation
warnings: domestic violence, mentions of scars and injuries, cursing, slight sexism
Tumblr media
Rip wasn’t sure what John saw in you. Apparently, you had been picked up on the side of the road by Beth, literally shaking in your boots out in the rain. Somehow she worked her magic on John and agreed to let you earn your keep to stay on the ranch. You were weak, you were quiet, you were. .  . well, you were just you. You stuck out on the ranch like a sore thumb amongst the foul-mouthed, loud, adrenaline-fueled cowboys who walked around with their heads held high. You looked like a dog that had been kicked one too many times.
“She’s weak, she’s slower than the rest,” John had barely been at the bunkhouse for an hour before Rip started in on his spiel on why you should get fired, “I have to tackle half her workload plus mine-”
“Looks like you need to teach her,” John said, sipping his coffee casually. John had a soft spot for strays, it was clear by the misfits that he had on his ranch. He knew good and well that you were the weaker link, having watched you struggle to keep up with the rest of the cowboys. But it wasn’t very often that his daughter begged him for a chance. Begged him to give you a chance. You didn’t have to say the reason why you were standing on the side of the highway in the rain, John could tell by one look at you.
“But sir-” Rip argued.
John looked over his shoulder at him, “Make her take the lead with pushing the cattle to the north pasture.” Rip’s jaw dropped as John clapped him on the shoulder before sauntering off towards his truck.
You hadn’t expected anyone to stop that night. All you wanted to do was get as far away from that house, from him, as you possibly could. You didn’t get very far in your car, breaking down only a mile outside of town. You knew that you couldn’t just sit there, he’d certainly find you. So, you ditched the car, leaving your phone in it, and took off walking. It was raining so hard that night, you could hardly see ten feet in front of you. Every passing semi and truck on the road made you jump, praying that you wouldn’t become roadkill. You just wanted to get away. Wanted to be somewhere safe and warm. That’s when a blacked-out SUV slowed to a stop beside you and a woman with a scar on her face rolled down the window.
“Are you fucking insane?!” She yelled. The moment you turned to look at her, her hard facial features softened. She clenched her jaw and looked towards her driver, before reaching over and opening the car door, “Get in. And if you think about killing me, I’ll haunt your fucking ass until you die.”
Beth had been the literal angel sent straight from hell. She had given you a place to stay, taking you to the bunkhouse and making all the men in there shake in their boots. She had given you fresh clothes and some toiletries, giving you a bunk with another female, Teeter, who reminded you a lot of your mother.
“You’ll stay here, got it?” Beth said, and you knew better than to argue with her, “Run out on me and I’ll kill you,” You nodded your head. She then looked at Teeter, “Rip doesn’t find out about this until after I talk to my dad.”
“I’ll hide ‘er,” Teeter nodded.
Beth nodded and looked back at you, her heart cracking in her chest a bit, “Get some sleep kid.”
Teeter had tried her best to ward Rip off, keeping him away from the bunkhouse that first morning, but there was no hiding the loud screams of terror that came from inside. Rip pushed away from Teeter, storming into the bunkhouse to find you, a small frail thing shaking and crying while Kolby and Ryan stood utterly confused.
“What the fuck is that?” Rip seethed as he pointed at you.
“Fresh blood!” Ryan smiled, while you were holding your knees to your chest and sobbing. You raised your head gently and looked into the warmest brown eyes you’ve ever seen. He clenched his jaw tightly, looking away from you, “Get her fed and saddled up. We got work to do,” Rip paused and turned back towards you, “And do something about the screaming shit. Gonna scare the fucking horses.”
You got to work quickly, not knowing a single thing about being a cowboy. Hell, you couldn’t even remember the last time you rode a horse. But thankfully, Teeter and Kolby took you under their wings, almost as if they were your proxy parents. Ryan fell into the spot of being the older, annoying brother that you wished you had. The three of them looked after you and made sure that you were doing alright, eating well, and getting your workload done. The only thing the three of them could not stop was the nightmares.
It was like clockwork, every single night. The same dream would plague you, the feel of his rough hands on your body, slamming your head against the wall, threatening to kill you, holding his hands tightly on your throat while black spots filled your vision.  You would wake up in the middle of the night screaming, sending the whole bunkhouse into a frenzy. Teeter would quickly jump down from her bunk, crawling into yours and holding you tightly, while Kolby made his way over. He’d always make sure that you were okay when there really wasn’t anything physical happening. Teeter would lay in your bed until you were asleep and then would crawl back into hers for the last few hours of shut eye.
It wasn’t until about two weeks into your working on the ranch that you had another run-in with Rip.
“You’re waking the bunkhouse,” He said gruffly. You looked down at your boots, trying to bite back the tears in your eyes, “My cowboys look like they haven’t had a solid night’s rest in weeks. I would fucking fire you if I could but. . .” You looked up at him, heart in your ears. You couldn’t get fired. You had nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide. Rip pinched his nose and sighed, “I can’t cause for some reason, John thinks your worth a shit.”
“But you don’t?” You said softly. Rip had to hide his stunned expression cause he was starting to think you don’t actually talk.
“No, I don’t,” Rip nodded, “So pack your shit and follow me.”
“I-I. . . I have nowhere to go,” You weren’t sure why you had to say that, but it felt like if Rip was going to tell you to disappear, you might as well try to plead your case.
Rip sighed, “Pack you shit. . . You’re coming to stay with me.”
You had been staying in Rip’s house for the past two weeks, and you hadn’t woken up screaming at all. Yes, you still had the same recurring nightmare, but it wasn’t so terrifying that it had you screaming in the dark. You weren’t sure what the cause of it was, but there was something about knowing that Rip was under the same roof that helped you sleep easily. You had seen the way that Rip jumped to stop a fight between Kolby and some rowdy ranch hand at the bar.
Rip had a soft spot for you, whether he liked to admit it or not. It made his chest hurt when he heard you whimpering and crying in your sleep from down the hall. He tried his best to ignore it the first night, but it got to the point that he couldn’t just lay in his comfortable bed, while you were fighting with something in your sleep on the couch. So, Rip found his way to the living room, gingerly lifting your head and laying it on his thigh. He would stroke your hair until you were back into a deep sleep. And then, he’d turn around and leave before your alarm sounded, going to the bunkhouse and telling John that he should fire you.
— — —
There was one thing that you loved about being away from the city, and that was the calm serene mornings. Watching the sun poke its light rays through the dark night. Seeing the purples and reds fade into bright blue skies. You hadn’t been on the Yellowstone ranch long, but you already fell in love with the sunrises. It was getting a bit colder out, as the sweltering summer was fading into the brisk fall. The leaves turn from green to vibrant reds and yellows. You felt calm out here. You felt in control. You knew you were needed down at the bunkhouse, but you didn’t care at this moment. Not after what you faced last night.
Rip was grumbling as he walked towards the stables, taking note of all the ranch hands walking around, seeing that you were nowhere to be found. You hadn’t come home last night after saying you were going into town with Ryan, Teeter, and Kolby. Rip hadn’t bothered to get your number, which he was starting to regret. He cursed himself for being worried about you, knowing you were a full-grown woman. But you were also a woman who looked to be scared of their own shadow.
“Carter!” Rip yelled as the young boy was walking out of the stables, “Why aren’t you saddled up?”
Carter paused for a moment, huffing up the heavy saddle in his arms, “I got a late start. I’m sorry Rip.”
Rip cursed under his breath as he watched Carter continue to struggle with his saddle, “God didn’t add extra daylight to Tuesday, Carter,” Rip rolled his eyes at the boy, who started to break into a jog, “Where’s the other Kid?”
“Still in the barn,” Carter nodded his head towards the white building, “She just got there.”
When he spotted you, resting your head against your house, Rip’s blood was boiling, “Do we just show up whenever the fuck we want to now? Where the hell have you-” You slowly lifted your head and turned to face Rip.
His jaw clenched shut tightly. His anger was now directed off of you and towards whoever the fuck bashed your face in. Your right eye was swollen shut, an ugly cut above your eyebrow. You had what looked like handmarks around your neck, and your nose was clearly broken.
“Who did this?” Rip seethed.
You shrugged, “It doesn't matter.” You grabbed your horse’s reins, going to walk out to the ring, but Rip grabbed your arm.
“That wasn’t up for an argument,” He spoke lowly, “Who did that to your face?”
You gulped and looked up at Rip, “My husband.”
It took all the willpower in Rip’s body to hold back the shocked expression. Why hadn’t you said you were married? Is that why you ran away? Well, clearly it was why you ran away, but how long had this been going on? Did he not know where you went? Was he looking for you?
But none of that mattered to Rip. All Rip wanted to know was, “Where is he?”
“I. . .” You closed your eyes and shook your head, “Dead.”
Rip didn’t ask any more questions, releasing your arm and running a hand down his bearded face. He looked over his shoulder, taking in a quick glance of his surroundings, before grabbing your arm and pulling you into the stall.
“Listen,” Rip whispered, “You’re gonna tell me where you left him and then you’re gonna go back to the house and stay there. I’ll handle this.”
“But-”
“Go put some ice on your face,” Rip didn’t leave any room for argument as he walked out of the stable, leaving you there alone.
— —
You did what Rip told you, leaving the stable and heading back to the house. You weren’t surprised that he didn’t have any ice packs in his freezer, so you were stuck with putting a frozen steak on your eye. The house was eerily quiet as you sat on the couch, frozen meat to your face as you waited for Rip to come back. You wondered what he thought about the house. You wondered what he was going to do to your husband’s body. You wondered if he was wishing that he had never agreed to help you. Maybe he was going to turn you in to the police as you sit.
But all those worries melted away as the front door opened, and Rip walked in. You stood up quickly as he stood in front of you.
“I-”
“How long?” Rip asked. You bit your lip, “How long has he been fucking using you like a punching bag?” Tears filled your eyes as you looked down at the ground, “Jesus Christ.” Rip huffed and took a step closer to you. He gently grabbed your chin in his hand, “Look at me,” You looked into his brown eyes, “You should’ve said something. You should’ve not gone to the house by yourself.”
“He was going to file a missing persons report,” You sniffled, “I thought that I should just go, get the rest of my things, and tell him that I’m leaving. But he got so mad and. . .” Cries fell from your lips and Rip pulled you into his chest.
You felt secure in his arms, his chest strong and comforting at the same time. You melted into his touch as he held you.
“You’ll never have to worry about him or anyone else again,” Rip spoke, making his chest rumble with the dip timbre of his voice, “You’re a part of the Yellowstone now.”

Kayce Dutton x Reader/OC - Friends to Lovers
He doesn't even have to take half a step to catch back up with me. “Come on Caroline, you know I’m just teasing you.” He pats my back as a peace offering. “Although,” Okay, maybe not. “I have it on good authority that I can please the ladies, so save a horse and all that.” Winking flirtatiously, he belts out a laugh, finally removing his hand from my bare back. And what a blessing that is, because if he had kept touching me while talking about… that, I’d be liable to combust.

Chapter 1
Sorry it took me so long to update! I'm a teacher and my free time is fairly limited. We're at a point in the school year now though that is much less stressful, so expect fairly regular updates, at least for the next few chapters.
Comments are so appreciated! I'd love to know what ya'll like and what ya'll think I could improve upon.
As always: I do not own Yellowstone (2018) or any of its characters. This work is not monetized.
THIS FIC IS CROSSPOSTED TO AO3. It is not posted to any other site. I am lookingcold on AO3 and that is all. I do not give permission for my work to be posted by others to any other platform.

We don’t talk for the rest of the walk, but the silence is comfortable, like it always is between us. Kayce and I have never asked too much of each other, have always read each others’ moods as if they were our own, and that apparently hasn’t changed from the five years we’ve spent apart. It’s glaringly obvious to us both that neither is up for idle chit chat.
And while I’m really not up for small talk, the silence does, unfortunately, give me entirely too much time to overthink. What felt like such a natural decision, what felt like fulfilling my duty this morning, now feels foolhardy, and quite possibly too risky. Now this isn’t to say that I’m doubting my choice. Helping Mr. John, helping Kayce, helping the family and ranch that raised me, that picked up my pieces and glued me back together over and over, is a no brainer. Helping the people and the place I love most in the world feels as natural as breathing. But smoothing over a murder? That’s- No, I’m not doubting my choice, but I’m sure as hell doubting my sanity. When I said the Duttons needed a criminal defense lawyer, not a PR specialist, I wasn’t exaggerating. And if I’m being honest, this job feels more like that of an accessory than a public relations consult.
The front porch of the big house comes into view well before I’m ready. This dinner may be a reunion of sorts, but it’ll undoubtedly be a business meeting as well. Steeling my nerves for such talks doesn’t come quite as naturally to me as it once did. I feel like a knight with rusty armor. Weak at critical points, weak where it matters. More aptly, I feel like a little girl again, staring into the headlights of a train with no way to move and no way to stop it. I’m no coward, please don’t think that of me, but you know that feeling of impending doom? The one that makes your spine tingle and your stomach drop to your knees? Dread is probably the best word. That’s all I can feel as I stand at the bottom step of the Dutton’s porch.
I must hesitate for too long, or stare off into space, or look absolutely fucking terrified, because in a flash Kayce is back down the two steps he’d already taken and by my side. He doesn’t say anything, you’d think we’d taken a vow of silence, but just looks at me imploringly, resembling a curious puppy so much I almost crack a smile. And then Kacye, sweet Kayce, wraps his calloused hand around mine and tucks it against his chest, over his heart, before tipping his head, ushering me up the stairs. Once I’m half way up I get a fond, “Atta girl,” and what woman doesn’t love being praised like an obedient mare. I snort in response and kick out my foot to trip him, but only a little bit, on the last stair. Can’t have hime getting too full of himself.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dinner is nice, but rather awkward if I’m totally honest, mainly due to the fact that Beth and Jamie are in attendance. Let’s just say Gator clears the table well before dinner should truly be over. To my surprise, we don’t talk business, but rather I’m questioned, interrogated really, over what I’ve been up to the past five years and why haven’t I called and would it really kill me to send a text every few months. Beth is the one who leads this inquiry. Jamie and I were never particularly close, so he remains silent for the most part, and he leaves in a huff shortly after Beth throws a fork like it’s a trident directly at his forehead. Can’t say I blame him, even I can only handle so much of Beth when she’s at her worst.
My interrogation is blissfully, or so I thought, cut short by Mr. John when he asks, “So, ya’ll have any plans tonight?” He folds his napkin meticulously, trying to look nonchalant but missing the mark by a shameful amount. If I thought that feeling of dread had left me, I was wrong.
I narrow my eyes and prepare to defend myself against an interrogation of a different kind. Before I can grit out a suspicious, “No, why,” however, Beth pipes up. “Actually Daddy, since you asked,” at this she turns to me, “Caroline, how do you feel about heading into town and getting gloriously drunk and then gloriously fucked? You’ve been gone far too long, so you’ve got to be re-initiated, re-tainted if you will.” She looks me up and down, assessing. “You’re far too shiny, like a little cherub.”
Jesus Christ, I think she’s suggesting I fuck a townie. And Mary and Joseph I haven’t even so much as kissed someone since my divorce - ok, well maybe a peck or two here or there, but that’s besides the point. Here I was, so worried about talking business, about skirting around the subject of murder, only to be blindsided by an age old Dutton scheme. Operation: Find Caroline a Cowboy. Well if Beth thinks I’m about to get biblical with some rando she is absolutely, positively looney tunes. Now, how to communicate all of that in a tactful way? Taking a shallow breath, I part my lips and prepare to spout some placating, buzzword bullshit. Something along the lines of, “Well, as fun as that sounds, I’m actually really tired. Maybe later this weekend?” or “How about we just kick back in the bunkhouse tonight, save the salaciousess for this Saturday?” Before I can even utter a word though, Kayce butts in on my behalf.
“Do you maybe think you could save the corruption for later, Beth? I’ve already promised the boys that I’ll bring Caroline around for cards tonight.” While his voice is calm, casual even, Kayce gives himself away the moment he begins to bounce his leg, the tap tap tap of the heel of his boot loud in the otherwise quiet room. He’s uncomfortable, maybe even irritated, which aren’t we all at least a little bit when speaking to Beth, but there’s something else. A boyishness to his demeanor that I haven’t seen since high school. There’s also the fact that we had decidedly made zero plans to visit the bunkhouse tonight. So. Interesting.
I’m certainly not the only one to notice his odd shift in behavior, as Mr. John’s lips curl into a smirk and Beth’s face arranges inself into a pleased, self-satisfied expression. She frequently wears the look of someone who knows enough to destroy literally any given person’s life, but this look is more playful, one of a cat that’s pinned a mouse by its tail. Ignoring Kayce, she turns her attention back to me. “Caroline, sweetheart, don’t even think about screwing any of those cowboys. I know old habits die hard, but trust me when I say not a single one of them is worth a ride.” Now, to be clear, Beth knows, I know, Mr. John knows, and even Kayce knows that Beth has only ever screwed one of said cowboys out in that bunkhouse, still, her dig elicits the desired reaction from Kayce. And furthermore, she makes it clear that she’s not just trying to set me up with any old cowboy. I’m on to her. Operation: Find Caroline a Kayce.
With a cringe of disgust and a flushed face, he exclaims, “Fuck’s sake Beth, I’m not taking her out there to pimp her out.” He’s stopped smoothing the tablecloth, but now he’s exasperatedly running his hand through his still damp hair. Shit, Kayce. You think he’d have learned by now how to not play into Beth’s hand. Some people just have to learn the hard way I suppose.
Beth’s eyebrows lift and the corner of her mouth quirks. “Well you’re not a very good bestfriend then, are you?”
“Fuck you.” Kayce mutters, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms petulantlly.
“Maybe you should be saying that to her.” Beth points at me with her napkin, dropping it onto her plate as she rises from the table. “This has been fun. Possibly the best family dinner we’ve had all year.” Planting a kiss on Mr. John’s cheek she says, “Love you Daddy, have a drink with me later, will you? I think we should talk.” Then, rounding the table to me, she strokes my hair, almost motherly, “Caroline, sweetheart, clear your schedule Saturday. Me and you are going to paint the town red.” Finally, reaching Kayce, she sighs, “Goodnight, dummy. Let me know if you’d like help finding your balls.” And just like a tornado, she’s there wreaking havoc one moment, and gone the next.
The dining room is uncomfortably silent for a beat after she exits, until Mr. John blessedly breaks the awkwardness yet again. “Beth’s antics aside, I don’t think ya’ll should be going out anywhere tonight. We’ve got several important meetings lined up tomorrow morning and I need both of you sharp. Especially you Kayce, tomorrow will require you to tell a very particular version of events and I can’t risk you fucking that up. Alright, Son?”
Looking slightly cowed, Kayce nods his head in agreement. “Alright.”
Having determined this hell of a dinner has gone on long enough, I begin to make moves to excuse Kayce and myself. “Dinner was delicious Mr. John, thank you for having me. And thank you for such fine company.” I may be lying out of my ass, but my momma didn’t raise me to be rude.
Mr. John exhales a dry laugh and rises from the table. It’s moments like this where his and Beth’s resemblance is striking. “No need to thank me, honey. You’re family, you’re welcome at my table anytime.” Pushing in his chair he surveys Kayce and I with calculating eyes. “Why don’t you two head on home, you both look like you’ve been put through the wringer.”
Gee Mr. John, I wonder the hell why?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Our walk back isn’t nearly as silent as our walk to the house. To say Kayce is pissed would be putting it lightly. “What in the actual fuck was all that? I mean, Beth was no surprise, but what shit is Dad trying to pull?”
“Kayce, your daddy barely said a word.” I’m more focused on the words left unsaid.
“He didn’t have to say anything Carrie, he sat there like a smug bastard and let Beth say it all for him.” Kayce may as well be pitching a fit the way he kicks at the ground, arms hugged tight to his chest like a wronged toddler. Honestly, the image is kind of amusing, so much so that I have to stifle a laugh. I must not do a good enough job, because I can feel the glare that Kayce shoots through the side of my head. “What?”
Not wanting to add fuel to the fire, I’m quick to hide my growing grin. “Well first off, I’m gonna overlook the fact you pulled out my forbidden nickname. But second, do you remember that Christmas when we were thirteen? How Beth hung mistletoe from literally every single doorway, and how your daddy actually enforced the kissing rule?” I raise my eyebrows high, daring him to conveniently “forget” an awkward moment from our childhood as he often pretends to do.
The tips of his ears turn pink, but he sighs his agreement. “Yeah I remember, we must’ve kissed two dozen times. At the time I thought dying would’ve been a kinder fate.”
Asshole. I punch him in the arm, hard. “Wow. Thanks a lot. The sentiment is shared.” Rolling my eyes and checking for invisible dirt beneath my nails, I continue. “Anyways, what they’re doing now, Beth and your daddy, is just an enormous escalation of what they did then. I don’t think Mr. John will rest in his grave until I give him a grandbaby - with you.” I look at Kayce pointedly. It’s no secret that Mr. John, and Beth by extension, have been holding out hope that me and Kayce would fall madly in love and have lots of babies. When Kayce married Monica the teasing and hinting stopped, after all Mr. John would never disrespect their marriage in such a way, and when I married Judd it was almost like a fence went up between us, between myself and the Duttons that is, but now that both of our spouses are out of the picture? I’m certainly not surprised the trouble has started back up.
I expect Kayce to splutter and turn a darker shade of red. Despite his gruff exterior he’s always been reserved and easy to embarrass. He surprises me though when he mutters, “Maybe we should just give him what he wants then. Get him and Beth off our backs.”
I shock myself with the cackle that bursts its way out of my body. It bubbles out partly because of the utter glee I get from Kayce having a sense of humor for once and partly from the insanity of such a suggestion. “So you’re telling me, that your solution to getting your daddy and Beth to leave us alone, is to have a baby together? Yeah, because they definitely would have no interest in our love lives after a stunt like that.” I bump his hip with mine. “I can just hear Beth now, ‘I’m thinking a Fall wedding, you look horrible in bright colors and nobody wants to wear a suit in eighty-eight degree weather.’ We’d never hear the end of it.”
Kayce shrugs, shooting me a wry grin. “Hey, if we marry each other at least we’ll know what we’re getting into. No surprises.”
“Yeah, and no sex,” slips past my lips before I can swallow it down. What a stupid fucking thing to say. Good job Caroline, talk about fucking, or not fucking, your best friend some more why don’t you. Now I’m the one who’s blushing. Pink from the roots of my hair to my chest. And what a fatal mistake I’ve made by opening my fat mouth. My whole life I’ve had to be one step ahead of Kayce, embarrassing him before he can embarrass me worse, yet here I am giving him a golden opportunity.
His grin only widens. “I hate to break it to you Carrie, but to make a baby people have to have sex.” He slings an arm around my shoulders, adding insult to injury. “You know when a man loves a woman…”
I elbow him in the ribs before he can continue. He laughs at my embarrassment just as much as he groans from the pain. “Oh shut up.” Now I cross my arms, increasing my stride so that his arm falls from my shoulders.
He doesn’t even have to take half a step to catch back up with me. If Kayce had always been shy and reserved in his day to day life, where I had been bright and obnoxious in mine, the topic of sex is where we switched places. I think calling myself a prude may be a tad harsh, but I certainly have never been one to broadcast my sexual business. Kayce on the other hand has never shied away from flirting, or kissing, or having sex in nearly every one of Mr. John’s pastures - you don’t get someone pregnant at nineteen by keeping it in your pants after all.
Playing the game I had with Kayce in the bathroom earlier today had felt safe, probably because I was the one in control, but this battle of wills feels altogether different, like someone is poking at an insecurity, at a bruise I didn’t even know I had. It’s confusing at best and humiliating at worst. Throwing his words back at him, I huff, “Now Kayce Dutton, you know this conversation is entirely improper, so I suggest you drop it. And also,” I whirl around on the step I’ve just taken. Thank God we’ve reached the foreman’s house because I don’t know how much longer I can participate in this back and forth before I’m forced to will myself out of existence. “Who says I’d even want to have a baby with you? Good authority or not. I know ya’ll’ve gotten new ranch hands since I’ve last been here, all of whom I haven’t gotten to size up yet. You never know, maybe one of them is babydaddy material.” I poke him firmly in the chest. “Don’t assume I haven’t got options.” Before Kayce can respond I storm up the remaining steps and into the house, kicking my boots off perhaps a bit too aggressively before striding into the kitchen. What I plan to do in the kitchen, I don’t know, but I still don’t know which room I’m staying in and the living room feels too cozy to stew in, so the kitchen it is.
Kayce saddles in much more calmly, but his fierce expression gives his true feelings away. “Are you serious?” He grunts, and if I wasn’t so embarrassed, mad, confused, hurt - for some reason that alludes me, I might have found the rocky timbre of his voice sexy.
“Serious about what?” I avoid his gaze petulantly, pouring myself a glass of water for a lack of anything better to do.
“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.” He groans, tipping his head back and rubbing at his eyes. “Are you really picking a fight over whether or not we should get imaginary married, have imaginary sex, and have an imaginary baby? You do hear how crazy that sounds?”
“So now I’m crazy?” My voice is cool, and serious, even though at this point I realize I’ve lost the argument. Even though I’ve realized there never should’ve been an argument in the first place.
Any fight Kayce had left in him drains away. I see the moment that it leaves his body, his eyes softening and his shoulders relaxing. “Caroline, honey, what’d I do?”
Almost as if there’s an invisible string connecting us, my body relaxes too. I blow out a breath, dump my water down the drain, and come to stand in front of him. No island between us. “You didn’t really do anything, just poked at a sore spot, that’s all.”
Sensing that this may be a conversation best saved for later, Kayce graciously changes the subject. Scratching at the back of his neck with one hand and gesturing towards the bathroom with the other he murmurs, “Well uh, if you still wanna have that spa night we should probably get going, we’ve got a early morning tomorrow and if I’m gonna let you take my spa virginity we’ve gotta do this thing right.” That earns him a hard exhale, the ghost of what could’ve been a laugh. But he must know not to expect much else, that I’m still nursing my bruised ego, because he carries on. “So why don’t I go get that bubble bath started and you can sort through your uh lotions and potions, decide on how best to pretty me up. And then maybe we could talk, about anything you want.” He begins to walk backwards, making his way towards the bathroom. It’s odd to hear the soft pad of his socked feet on the hardwood and not the click of his boots, but also kind of nice, endearing.
“Okay,” I breath, “Yeah, that’d be - that’d be nice.” I move to walk past him, into the hall where I’d left my bags. “I think you’ve got a bit of a sunburn so I’ll see if I’ve got an aloe mask for you. If you plan on putting yourself back on the market you’d better start taking care of your looks.”
I’m very purposefully facing away from him, so I don’t see the melancholy on his face so much as I hear it in his voice. “Yeah, I don’t think that’s likely to happen. My days of chasing tail are definitely over.” I don’t reply, not too keen on opening that can of worms further, and so an uncomfortable silence settles over us. It’s only broken when Kayce sighs, “Well, I’ll uh, I’ll be in the bathroom whenever you’re ready.”
Still looking down, I pause the mindless shuffling I’d been doing through my bags, “Alright, just give me a few minutes.” Having found the masks I was looking for well before now, I finally rise from out of my crouch, left knee popping in protest. “Like you said, you deserve a proper first spa night,” I turn my body to reveal my profile, pretending to check the label of the plastic tub in my hands, “I’ve gotta make sure I pull out all the stops. You know I don’t half ass anything.” Feeling generous, I finally offer him a small smile, turning to fully face him.
The relief in his eyes catches me off guard. “Don’t I know it.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t know what I expected when Kayce said he’d go run a bubble bath. Too absorbed in my own thoughts, I didn’t consider that such an activity is typically done alone, certainly not with a friend, and even more certainly not with a totally platonic, albeit sexy, boy bestfriend. When I finally make my way into the bathroom however, I’m greeted by the sight of Kayce settled into the comically large clawfoot tub, chin tucked to his chest so that bubbles cling to his beard, eyes unfocused and contemplative. “Didn’t realize I invited Santa Claus.” I joke, at a loss for anything else to say. Too scared to say the wrong thing or ask the wrong question.
At the sound of my voice his head jerks up, the sudden movement sloshing water just shy of the lip of the tub. “Santa Claus?” He furrows his eyebrows. He really does look like a puppy.
“You’ve got bubbles,” I gesture to my chin, miming a full beard.
He chuckles, “Oh, yeah, I guess I just got bored and,” he shrugs, “I’ve gotten used to playing with Tate in the bath. You’re lucky I didn’t break out the bubble mohawk.”
“The bubble mohawk?” I giggle, “I don’t know, I think I’d like to see that actually. Just make sure I’ve got a camera on me when you do break it out, yeah?” Lining my “lotions and potions” up on the counter, I look away, still trying to figure out what exactly is going on here, or what Kayce expects me to do, to say.
He must sense my hesitancy because he volunteers, “I hope I got the water hot enough. I know how you women like to scorch your skin off, but I’m afraid I’m just a bit too delicate.” He’s pushed himself into a full sitting position now. The water pools just under his chest and it takes everything in me to meet his eyes.
“So we are taking a bath together then?” I huff. “Because that’s not weird at all.” Still, I move to pull my blouse up and over my head, clipping my hair up so that it no longer hangs down my back. “And if you’re not actively in pain, then no, you don’t have the water hot enough. But that’s alright, I’ll manage.”
Ignoring my comment about the water, his eyebrows furrow once again in confusion. “Why’s it weird? You’re the one that suggested it.”
“No. I didn’t.” I shoot some side eye at him, because who in their right mind would suggest such a thing. Hopping around to remove my socks before balling them up and tossing them into the hall so that they don’t get wet, I continue, “And it’s weird because usually when grown adults take a bath together it’s only because something else is gonna follow.”
Rolling his eyes, he insists, “Yes. You did. You said you normally take a bubble bath for spa nights, so here we are, taking a bubble bath. And it’s not weird. I’m wearing my underwear, and I assumed you’d wear yours too. It’s no different than going swimming together.” He sounds way too exasperated for a conversation that is this stupid.
Remember how I said Kayce and I have never had trouble reading each other? Yeah I take that back. Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, I sigh, “That was not a suggestion. That was a statement. But thank you for the clarification. Now before I literally die of embarrassment, would you like the lavender hair mask,” I forcefully lift one colorful jar into the air, and then another, “or the apple?”
Looking as fed up as I feel, Kayce responds gruffly, “The lavender.”

My Forever - R. Wheeler
Tumblr media
Pairing: Rip Wheeler x female!Dutton warnings: pregnancy, horseback riding while pregnant, protective papa Rip word count: 1.3k Note: my Yellowstone and Outer Range requests are open. If you saw me post this yesterday. . . ya didn't.
Tumblr media
It has always been a dream of yours to become a mother. From the time you were a little girl, running around with Kayce and Lee on the ranch, you had always played “family”, your old brothers playing along with you. Every doll and teddy bear that you had gotten became your baby and you treated them as such. Your mother wanted more for you than to become some rancher’s wife and raise the next generation of Duttons, but it was what you wanted.
Rip knew that that was your dream, and he was more than willing to help you achieve it. First thing though, was marrying you. John put the fear of god in him on what would happen if he knocked up his little girl before marrying her. So Rip did right by him, and married you in a small ceremony on John’s front lawn. You wore a simple white sundress and your boots. Kayce stood by your side as you exchanged vows with the love of your life. Everyone knew it was only a matter of time until you were sharing the news that you were pregnant.
You were currently six months along and were bursting at the seams with excitement about the little girl you were carrying. Rip was terrified when you told him the baby was a girl. He didn’t know the first thing about raising little girls, and prayed that if she turned out anything like you or her aunt. . . God save the man who pisses her off. But there was one thing that you missed the most since becoming pregnant, was being able to ride your horse.
It wasn’t that you couldn’t go ride, it was just strongly recommended that you don’t. You had asked at your first OB appointment if you could, and your midwife advised against it. And Rip took that like it was the word of God. Anytime he saw you getting anywhere close to the bunkhouse or the stables, he was directing you away. He was already protective of you, and now that you were carrying his little girl, it was amplified by a thousand.
But somehow, you had managed to get around his ruling, and found yourself in the stables before anyone else, well besides Jimmy, who was cleaning the stalls. Your boots clicked on the cement as you walked by the horses, getting to the stall where your first baby was. The brown and white Appaloosa that had been gifted to you for your 18th birthday, stood up from his lying position and made his way over to you.
“Missed me, huh,” You smiled and pet his nose, “I missed you too.”
“Uh, are you supposed to be-”
“Jimmy, shut up,” You said, “Saddle up ol’ Jesse here.”
“Rip told us not to-”
“Does it look like Rip is fucking here,” You turned and put your hands on your hips, “Hasn’t anyone ever told you not to piss off a pregnant woman? A pregnant Dutton woman, at that?”
“N-no, ma’am.”
“So stop fucking stuttering and saddle up my horse, Jimmy!”
Jimmy nodded and moved quickly to get Jesse out of his stall. You sighed in content and fixed the hat on your head. You were at the point in your pregnancy where wearing Rip’s jackets fit better than your own. You knew that when he woke and looked for his classic black Yellowstone jacket, he'd start cursing up a storm but you couldn’t be bothered with it.
“Horse is saddled ma’am, where should I put him?” Jimmy asked.
“In the arena,” You said. Jimmy nodded and followed you out to the arena with Jesse on the reigns. The horse seemed excited as they neared the arena, knowing that he would be able to stretch his legs and get a good run in, “Alright,” You sighed, and took the reins from Jimmy, “Stay near.”
“Why?”
“In case I fall off this thing or Rip comes down,” You climbed up on the fence, giving yourself a little extra leverage to get up on Jesse’s saddle. You couldn’t swing up on him like you used to, not with a growing belly. Jesse let out soft huff as you mounted and adjusted yourself in the saddle, “Alright, easy now boy.” You kicked his belly softly, “Precious cargo on board.”
As if Jesse could understand you, the horse started to gently trot around the arena. It wasn’t like you were used to, being able to take off with incredible speed and ride him up through the mountains and valleys of the ranch, but the soft, gentle trot was enough to bring a smile on your face. You let out a laugh as you felt your baby kick within you. You pulled on Jesse’s reins, stopping him.
“Good boy,” You cooed and pet his mane, “Soon enough you’ll have another little handler who will be begging to take you for a spin. Come on,” You kicked his belly once again, getting the horse to start to trot.
Jimmy watched you amazed, how easily you took all the turns and led Jesse around the ring. He didn’t notice that the rest of the bunkhouse had woken up, or that Rip was storming his way up to the arena, looking for both his jacket and his woman.
“What the fuck is she doing?” Rip asked, seeing you in the arena, “Jimmy, what the fuck is she doing?”
“Uh,”
“Oh!” You stopped Jesse’s small run, “You’re awake.”
“Yeah, I’m fucking awake,” Rip said, “What the hell are you doing on a goddamn horse?”
“Well, what does it fucking look like?” You sassed back.
“Ryan, get her the fuck off that damn horse,” Rip ordered. You rolled your eyes as you watched your husband walk away and back into the stables, but not before stopping and thumping Jimmy upside the head. Ryan gave you an apologetic look and grabbed Jesse’s reins, pulling you over to a ladder that Colby had brought out.
“Sorry, miss,” Lloyd said, giving you his hand to help you off the horse, “You know how he is.”
“A stubborn asshole,” You said, your feet hitting the steady ground, “If this kid pops out with his stubborn attitude. . . so help us all.” You squeezed Lloyd’s shoulders before walking into the stables to find your husband pacing the ground. You sighed and leaned up against the wall of an empty stall.
“I told you to stay away from here. From the bunkhouse, from the stables and from the-”
“I can not stay locked away in the foreman's house any longer, Rip!” You yelled, “I’m losing my fucking mind being in there all fucking day. Between you, and my dad and my brothers being so god damn over protective I am losing my fucking mind. I just wanted one second of freedom. Just one.”
Rip felt a pang of guilt and took a step forward. Before he had met you, he never thought he could have anything good in his life. He had seen all sorts of evil, he had been a part of that evil. But you showed him that he could have something good in his life. You showed him what it felt and meant to love someone unconditionally. And Rip was going to fight for that until his dying breath.
“I can’t lose you or her,” Rip said and gently placed his hands on your growing bump, “You two, are my forever. My everything. And everytime you leave my side, I think the worst. I almost lost you once,” The memory of the day the whole family got attacked plays in his mind every time you walk away from him. He spent hours trying to get ahold of you, wanting to know if you were dead or alive. Your dad was barely alive, your brother had been shot, your sister nearly blown up, and you had been run off the road by a semi.
You grabbed Rip by the back of the neck and brought his lips down to you. You pulled back and Rip rested his forehead against yours, “You’re not losing us. We are right here, forever. You’re stuck with us now, baby.”
“And there ain’t no better way I’d have it.”

Cold Mornings: Kayce Dutton
Yellowstone Masterlist
word count: 400
description: Despite the hating the cold weather, you agree to take a morning ride with your boyfriend Kayce.
Tumblr media
"No way, absolutely not. I'm not going out there in that cold weather." You said to your boyfriend Kayce.
"Baby please it's the perfect weather for a morning ride." He said leaning over and placing a kiss on your cheek.
"Huh, that's debatable. But you know if we stay here in our warm bed then we could do something else..." you said kissing him which lead to a little make-out session.
"Nice try sweetheart..if you come to ride with me then we can come back inside and I'll make it up to you." He said as you groaned.
"Kace how is that any better? I still have to get out of this warm bed, and go out there in the cold." I said pulling the blanket higher up on my body.
"Because I was going to suggest we ride together, you know with you in my arms for extra warmth instead of you on your own horse being cold and miserable but that's fine, you wanna stay here in bed I understand." He said.
"Fine...you win." I said groaning as I climbed out of bed hearing him laugh as I grabbed some clothes to go get changed.
"I love you sweetheart." He said grabbing my hand and pulling me into his arms before he placed a kiss on my lips.
"Hmm that's debatable but I love you too." I said before disappearing into the bathroom to get changed.
After I changed, we made our way downstairs and out to the stables, so he could get his horse saddled up and everything as I stood there watching trying not to think about how cold it was outside.
"Alright sweetheart, she's ready to go." He said bringing her over towards you.
He helped you up to his horse first and then he climbed on behind you, wrapping his arms around you as he held the reins. Sure you knew how to ride your own horse and whatnot but riding with Kace was one of your favorite things.
"What are you thinking about sweetheart?" Kayce asked noticing how quiet you'd been since the ride started.
"Just thinking about how much I enjoy this, being with you the whole thing." I said tilting my head up and looking at him.
"I'm glad to hear that, it's one of my favorite things sweetheart too." He said squeezing your hand as he placed a kiss on your lips.

Any chance you’d consider writing one about Yellowstone Ryan, for smut prompts 10 (“you need a place to stay for the night”) or 21 (“Bite me.” “If you insist”)? I can just picture the war between his snarky humor and being a gentleman!
i started giggling and twirling my hair when i saw this
pairing: ryan (yellowstone) x fem!reader
w/c: 1.4k
warnings: 18+ only. friends to lovers. drinking. heated make out session. dry humping. ryan’s sexy beard and long hair.
a/n: i know this is very niche but i adore ryan sm and i loved writing for him 🥺

“You’re a dirty little cheater!” You shouted as you threw your cards down on the wooden surface and pointed your finger towards the man sitting at the end of the table.
“And you’re a sore loser,” Ryan muttered, a smug smile spreading across his face as he took another swig of his Budweiser. Teeter was grabbing your arm before you could stand up, pulling you back down into your chair before you could lunge towards the cowboy.
Ryan was one of your best friends, truly, but he made you want to pull your hair out sometimes. He was the first one who welcomed you when you started coming around with Laramie. The one who would keep you company while her and Walker were off god knows where doing god knows what. He was the one that picked at you and took your jabs with stride, usually smarting off right back. To an outsider, it would look like you couldn’t stand each other, but you knew that wasn’t the case.
You never envisioned her little fling would lead to you spending your weekends at the Yellowstone Ranch, playing poker with a bunch of half drunk cowboys. Ryan took the time to teach you how to play, even though he was terrible at it himself. Which is probably why he looks so proud that he beat you, never beating anyone that usually participated in a game. You slumped down in your chair, arms crossed over your chest and a prominent pout on your lips as you looked to Ryan.
“Quit lookin’ at me like that,” he expressed, “I’m not feeling sorry for you.”
You stuck your tongue out at him as he shuffled the cards for the next round. You sat and watched Ryan’s hands as they moved along the cards, completely tuning out each voice. He had nice hands, a feature you caught yourself eyeing more often than you’d like to admit. You would never voice this out loud but you sometimes daydreamed about how it’d feel to hold his hand, how they’d feel roaming over your body. How they’d feel grabbing your thr-
“Hello??? Did you hear me?” Ryan’s questioning shook you out of your inappropriate thoughts and you felt like a deer caught in the headlights. You shook your head, waiting for him to repeat himself.
“Do you wanna play another round?”
“No. I’m- I’m okay, I’ll sit this one out. Maybe I’ll learn how to win.” You said jokingly, hoping he wouldn’t question why you spaced out. You found yourself doing that more and more the longer you were around Ryan. You had conflicting feelings, you adored him as a friend, but you also couldn’t help the fluttering butterflies in your stomach every time he looked at you softly or when he went out of his way during the week to text or call you. Sure, you teased each other to no end, bickering at every chance you got. That seemed to make your feelings that much worse.
“We’re gonna go out to Bozeman, grab a few drinks,” Colby said as he stood from his seat, “who all wants to come?” Each person nodded in agreement except for you. You were tired, not up for the excitement of what going to a bar in Bozeman might bring. You politely shook your head, getting up to grab a glass of water and busy yourself with putting away some of the empty beer bottles. The others got ready to head out for their night out as you sat on the couch. Teeter stopped before walking out the door to check on you. You told her you were fine, that you’d probably put a movie on and crash. The door shut behind her and you were finally alone - or so you thought.
Ryan plopped down on the couch next to you, letting out a long sigh and spreading his legs just a tad. You sat there and stared at him until he finally acknowledged you.
“What?”
“What do you mean ‘what?’ I thought you were going out?” You spoke in a hushed tone.
“Eh, didn’t feel like it. You don’t mind me crashing your movie night, do you?” Ryan nudged you slightly, smirking at you.
“I guess I don’t have another choice,” You said, moving a minuscule amount closer to the cowboy. For someone who just watched rodeos, Ryan was very picky about what movie you put on. He claimed he didn’t want to watch any ‘chick flicks’ and you told him he had no opinion since it was supposed to be your alone time. You finally settled on ‘When Harry Met Sally’.
Ryan surprisingly stayed quiet for the majority of the movie, making random comments here and there. You don’t know how it happened but when you realized it, you were pressed into his side. His arm was resting along the back of the couch, his fingertips brushing against the nape of your neck absentmindedly. At the love confession scene, you couldn’t help but tear up. No matter how many times you had seen the film, it still hit you hard.
“Awe, are you crying, sweetheart?” Ryan asked, tone light mixed with slight concern.
“Oh, bite me. It’s such a good confession, okay!” You exclaimed, pulling away slightly to look at him as the end credits rolled.
“Well, if you insist…” He said, so low you almost missed it. He had a look on his face that you could only describe as wanting. His eyes flickered down to your lips and you felt your breath catch in your throat.
“Ryan,” you breathed, voice barely above a whisper.
“Can I- Can I kiss you?” One big, callused hand cupped your cheek, stroking your cheekbone with his thumb. You were afraid of your voice failing you so you just nodded, whimpering slightly as his lips attached to yours. It didn’t take long for the kiss to turn needy. Your hand found their way into his greying curls, tugging lightly on them which earned you a groan from the man. His hands wandered down to your hips, pulling until you were seated in his lap. Your mouth opened in a gasp as you felt his hard cock against your core, causing Ryan to slip his tongue inside. Your hips moved on their own accord as his kisses moved away from your mouth and down your jaw, biting at the tendon in your neck.
“Been thinking about this for a long time, baby,” He said, words muffled against your skin. You moved against him that much faster, the denim of his jeans causing a delicious friction against your thin panties. The skirt of your dress fanned out below you. You could feel the cool metal of his belt buckle press into your pubic bone, sending a shiver down your spine.
“Ryan, we need- oh, god- we need to talk about this,” your words coming out in near whines. You angled your hips just so and moaned loudly into the empty bunkhouse. Ryan was grunting into your skin, hands roaming up your back and tugging at your hair, causing you to arch against him. You were nearly there, so close you could almost taste it. That was until you heard a truck door slam, and loud laughter coming from outside the door. You froze in Ryan’s lap, panic washing over the both of you. Quickly moving off of him, you straightened your dress and fussed with your hair until you felt like you looked presentable. He grabbed one of the throw pillows and placed it over his very obvious bulge, shooting you an apologetic look as everyone filtered back inside.
“Well, that was a quick trip…” Ryan said, clearly annoyed.
They all spoke at the same time, the only thing you caught was that Teeter suggested body shots and that was their cue to leave. You willed your heart rate to slow down, avoiding eye contact with everyone - especially Ryan. While everyone busied themselves with their nighttime routines, you found your pinky interlocked with Ryan’s on the couch. He looked over to you and smiled, causing you to bow your head shyly. You didn’t know what all of this meant for your relationship, but whatever it was, you were ready to face it head on. What you didn’t see was Colby smiling to himself, eyeing the mark on your neck and the lovesick look in his best friend’s eyes.

You Belong With Me - Jamie Dutton
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jamie Dutton x OC (Ava North)
Summary: Ava only wanted one thing: to be a horse tamer. And when she had the chance, she took it. Ava became the new horse tamer of Yellowstone, a totally different ranch from the others she met, either because of its immensity or because of family problems. Ava thought her problems were big, but when she met the Dutton family that thought dies. However, there is a Dutton who is a point out of the curve, a lawyer mistreated by the problems and by his own family. Meeting Jamie Dutton may not have been the work of chance, after all one broken understands the other.
Warnings: Subtle sexual innuendos, brief language, alcohol consumption, angst, smut, fluffy.

Part III
Someone I can't have
The days went by and Ava became more and more connected with the cowboys and especially with the foreman. They didn't have another moment as intimate as that, since Ava no longer showed any interest beyond the conversations and Lee seemed to understand this. She respected him and liked to see that he respected her equally. This fact alone could have made him even more attractive, but something got in the way. He was kind, capable and kissed very well, he was a man. Why didn't she feel attracted to him?
One day the Duttons invented to have a family reunion on top of the horses. She could see Lee, Jamie and another brother she later discovered was Kayce, John's youngest son. There was a boy with him and from the way John looked at that boy, he was his grandson. But there was no sign of Kayce's wife, if he had any. Ava knew there were more children, a woman, but she didn't leave the House much and she certainly wouldn't share that moment with them.
Ava rode on one of the horses and joined the other cowboys, waiting for the Duttons to gather on the horses. Lee was the first and stood next to her at a distance considered far enough not to cause suspicion, but close enough to take care of her. Ava can observe Rip's look on himself, curious and mocking. She knew he understood what was happening between them, but had let her bear her own decisions. And she would thank him for that.
Jamie was the second to climb the horse. That stallion was one of the most docile and calm in the stable, which made it clear how far Jamie was from the farm and the routine of the cowboys. He certainly wasn't a landowner. At least, Jamie didn't get out of balance and managed to guide his horse to where Lee was, keeping his eyes fit, of course, on John Dutton. He helped his grandson to climb on his horse with satisfaction and love, with a look that she had not yet seen launch even to Lee, let alone Jamie.
Jamie, at a rare moment, looked away from John to Ava. It was a quick moment, maybe milliseconds, but she can glimpse a look of sadness. He fixed his gaze on Kayce, calling him to ride, but Ava kept watching him. Once again he had dressed differently from the suit and tie, wore boots, jeans, a white shirt and a cream jacket. However, as much as he dressed like a cowboy, he wasn't one. The well-aligned hair was certainly not from a cowboy. Jamie represented everything that Ava never managed to stay close to, that she never saw in that small town. He represented a class very far from her. Still, her body kept burning whenever she saw him.
Kayce finally joined the rest of the family and everyone headed to the countryside, where they guided the immense buffaloes from one valley to another. They did that from time to time to give the land time to recover while the buffaloes fed on the other part. The land trembled with the noise of the strong footsteps of the animals, both buffaloes and horses and Ava admired the beautiful and raw landscape of Yellowstone. The clean air, green and blue of the sky enchanted her every day as if it were the first time.
"I'll get him going for you." Kayce informed Lee with a playful smile.
"Race you!" Lee took the challenge and rode next to his brother, pairing the speeds in the middle of the herd.
"Men." She laughed alone when she watched the two brothers increase their speed more and more and the buffaloes follow them downhill.
"Think they should hold here." Jamie announced to his father, who ignored him for a few minutes.
"Kayce might be the only man who can outride him." John replied calmly as he watched the two sons ride through his land and then walked away from Jamie taking Tate with him.
The cowboys continued with their work and followed John, but Ava took a few seconds to watch Jamie. He stood there after hearing that from his father, with a sad and disappointed expression. John had said with all the letters that Jamie was not good enough to defeat Lee. And that statement didn't seem to be just about the race. Jamie was destined to be just the family's lawyer forever, at least according to John Dutton.
Before following the same direction as the others, Ava noticed a mucca on the back loins of Jamie's horse and rode to him. Jamie received her with a question mark on his face, after all, their last meeting had not been so friendly for her to want to approach him again.
"There's a mucca on your horse, sir. Don't move. I'm going to remove it." Ava informed respectfully when she got close enough to him. Jamie was reluctant for a moment, as if he didn't believe she was helping him, but gave in with a nod. If that mucca stung the horse, God knew how far he would take Jamie.
"Be quick." Jamie ordered by observing that the herd and the cowboys were distancing themselves. Ava rolled her eyes without him noticing and stretched towards Jamie's horse, pushing the mucca away with the thick gloves.
"Quick enough?" She didn't contain the sarcastic comment. "Oh, sorry...sir."
Jamie shook his head in front of her comment and left towards the others without looking back.
"Thank you, Ava. You were very kind." She replied to herself and rode quickly in the direction of the other cowboys.
After they guided the herd to valley nine, the Duttons took a different turn on the way back. They took a turn and rode towards the river. Ava and some cowboys remained at the top of the hill, waiting for the bosses to fish in the river. They prepared the baits and hoisted them over the water while still riding the horses. They seemed to be having fun and for a moment Ava wished she wasn't a cowgirl and could just had fun in that river.
Lee was the first to catch a fish and handed the fishing rod to Kayce, who gave it to Tate. John Dutton had gone up with the other cowboys to solve landowner problems and left his grandson with his father. Tate was an adorable boy who didn't seem to have much contact with nature, at least not like that.
"I got a fish!" Tate exclaimed excitedly to his father.
Ava observed that Jamie had positioned himself in the center of the river and after a few minutes he hooked a fish as well. Then Jamie got off the horse in a cumsy jump and wrapped the nylon thread of the fishing rod.
"Lee, get my horse. Whoo!" Jamie exulted when he could catch that fish as if he were a child, almost as excited as Tate. "Little late in the year for that!"
"Do they have the habit of coming here?" Ava asked Ryan, one of the cowboys who had been left behind.
"Not in recent years." He responded by watching the family downstairs. "Only Lee still shows up here from time to time."
"You can tell that."
Ava watched Jamie lift his huge fish from the river with a smile of satisfaction. He seemed very proud of his feat, it almost seemed that he had never done something so good that he deserved to be proud of or that someone had never given him due recognition. One thing or another, the fact was that Jamie seemed happy. It was the first time Ava saw him smile, most of the time Jamie was frowing, sad or worried. She could almost see every line of expression of his no longer so young face from above. He raised the fish so high that she thought he wanted to show her his big fish too. She laughed without warning.
"Oh, she's so beautiful." Jamie admired the dead fish in his hands.
The Dutton brothers lit a small bonfire by the river and roasted the two fish they had caught. They were more comfortable at that moment, taking off their jackets and sitting on small tree trunks. The moment seemed so intimate that Ava felt bad for having to watch them. She, more than anyone, knew the value of privacy and they deserved it.
"You're gonna raise him on a reservation?" Lee asked his brother about Tate while eating some of the roasted fish.
"People do it every day." He responded in disdain while taking care of his son's fish.
"Cause they have no choice, Kayce." Jamie entered the conversation after eating another piece of the fish, carrying a small knife between his big hands.
"Yeah, looks like you're ready to eat." Kayce ignored the brothers' comments to pay attention only to her son.
"It's a good day." Tate sentenced by finally tasting his fish.
"Every day, just like this." Jamie reported excitedly, but Kayce didn't buy that.
"Who are you kidding? Bet you haven't fished here in years."
"Only thing we haven't done in years is seeing you, Kayce." Jamie replied looking for another piece of fish meat.
"Well, he told me to leave."
"He told us all to leave." Lee recalled with the most serious voice. "You were just the only one who did."
"It's different. You know that."
"So you're gonna raise him in that meth-filled desert to prove a point." Lee continued to debate with his brother.
"What I'm proving you'll never understand." Kayce explained and the brothers laughed.
"Shit, I miss being young. You wake up in the morning and you just keep right on dreaming, huh?" Lee mocked his younger brother.
"You're a 38-year-old bachelor living in your father's house, working 100-hour week for a nibble of his approval." Kayce countered directly in a heavy argument. "Is that the dream, Lee? Sure as shit it ain't mine."
Ava could see the brothers talking from afar without being able to hear them, but she could notice a certain repulsion and anger in Lee's always cheerful expression. She wonder what they were talking about? Suddenly, Lee caught a pebble and threw it in the direction of Kayce, who deviated before the piece hit his face.
"Hey! Don't throw things at my dad!" Tate screamed anrily and got up to throw, with all his childish strength, the fish he had caught on Lee. The brother fell back more scared than by the force of the object. "Fucker!"
The brothers laughed because of the boy's behavior and verbiate. Even Ava laughed from up there. It was something so unexpected that she couldn't hold back her own laugh even if she didn't know what it was all about. Lee was hit by a little boy. She would definitely make fun of him later.
And there it was again, his smile. It was more surprised than happy, but it was still a beautiful smile. Jamie had big and wide teeth, but crooked. She was sure he could have left them straight if he wanted to, he had money for it. Ava didn't understand why someone who apparently cared so much about appearance didn't care about their own teeth. However, she had to admit that it matched him. A sign of imperfection on that plastic mountain. She liked that, it was fucking charming.
The brothers remained talking for a long time until Tate seemed tired and they decided to return home. The Duttons reunited again with the cowboys and they rode back. Jamie didn't ride as fast as his brothers, not even the cowboys, so he always ended up behind the crowd. And this distance allowed him to see a red handkerchief stuck in one of the branches of the trees. Jamie recognized it and approached to pick it up, keeping it in his jacket pocket.
Upon arriving at the stables, the cowboys collected the Duttons' horses to feed them inside the barn and they all entered the house, at least that's what Ava thought. She took care of the last horse in the stable, combing the mane while he fed, when she saw boots appear at the door. Ava raised her head to contemplate Jamie Dutton.
"Is there a problem, sir?" She asked with a frown, since he had never entered there since she had taken over the job.
"My father cares about his men as much as about animals and the land, Ava. He gives you everything you need to take care of what is his." He began his report by crossing his arms over his chest and staring at her with disdain.
"We are grateful for that, sir."
"Is it really? It doesn't look like it. Where's your handkerchief, Ava?"
She continued to frown at his question and looked for the piece on her neck, but did not find it. Ava widened her eyes and looked under her jacket, in her pockets and even in the cabin, but she couldn't find it. Holy shit! She sighed strongly and closed her eyes for a second trying to remember where she could have left it. Damn, the wind was so strong that day that it could have fallen anywhere.
"I lost it, sir." Ava responded after realizing that lying would not be the best option.
"Good. You were honest." Jamie let out a mini smile and rummaged through his jacket pocket, removing the red scarf. Ava opened her mouth slightly in surprise and closed it immediately. "It was near the river. It looks like you got distracted."
"This is not going to happen again, sir."
Jamie didn't answer by just studying her entirely with those huge and bright blue eyes. She had never been so close to him as to see them like that. They were beautiful, although a little sad. Jamie extended the handkerchief towards her and Ava picked it up, but not before she felt a remnant of his warm skin between her fingers. Sparks exploded from that touch.
"I feel like I know you from somewhere." Jamie resumed talking after the brief shock.
"I don't think so, sir. I would remember, for sure."
"You would?" Jamie asked almost choking and Ava felt a little powerful for making him disassemble like that.
"We are from completely different worlds, sir. If I'm in a place where you are, or that place is poorly frequented or it's from high society." Ava acquired a seductive tone that she had no intention of having. Jamie swallowed it dry over and over again. "I would definitely remember someone like you."
"Someone like me..."
"Yes, someone I can't have."
Ava didn't understand why she did that, in fact, she knew well, she just didn't understand why she couldn't contain herself. He was her boss, just like Lee. If she continued like that, she would lose the respect of cowboys and bosses. But she couldn't help but like everything that Jamie threw at her at that moment, in complete shock, as if he had never heard something like that from someone, especially from a woman. Ava saw him as an imposing man, smart enough to rid the ranch of many problems, but she realized that Jamie didn't seem to have many experiences with women. He seemed naive, disconcerted and fucking surprised. Probably, Jamie had never been desired by a woman before, at least, not one as attractive as Ava.
"IIII, I need to go." He stuttered and swallowed dry several times.
"OK, sir. Thank you for returning the handkerchief to me." Ava maintained the malicious tone and opened an irresistible smile, which Jamie almost disassembled in front of her. "Have a good day, Mr. Dutton."
"Likewise, Ava."
Jamie squeezed the step away from the stable and if she wasn't looking maybe he would have run out of there. Once alone, Ava allowed herself to laugh at the situation and bit her lower lip.
"Did you see that, Leon?" She talked to the horse that squeamed.

The Sheriff’s Daughter
Tag list ( send an ask to be added ) @child-of-of-the-sunshine @hcwthewestwaswcn
Pushing the main door opened that belonged to the Sheriff’s department of Montana. I walked past the front desk to my fathers office door lightly kicking it open rather than knocking. “Morning daddy, so what cases do we have to work on today?”
“Nothing too serious for now, honey. I mostly just have paperwork needing to be filled out.” My father said leaning forward in his chair at his wooden desk. A stack of papers was in front of him from previous cases needing to be documented.
I sit down in the seat on the other side of his desk. “Well I can help you with some of the paperwork.”
“You don’t have to do that. Trust me you do enough here already. Much more than your mother or sister care for.” He raised a hand grabbing a pen beginning to fill them out.
From my junior year of high school I knew that I wanted to help my father and be in the police department like he was. My sister Debbie and our mother weren’t big fans of the concept and still aren’t to this day. Only difference is now I am old enough to do whatever I want regardless of their approval. “Daddy, from the day I turned 16 I knew I wanted to be like you. Let me help you please.”
“Honey, I just don’t want you to be missing out on life cause of this job. You’re a great help but remember to live your life outside of work too.” My father removed his hat, sending me a smile.
Sending him a smile back. “I know that, daddy.”
“Excuse me, sir.” We both turned our heads seeing his front desk assistant standing in the doorway. “Sorry to interrupt your conversation. But Mr. Dutton is here to pick up his updated gun permit paperwork.”
My father Donnie raised a brow. “John?”
“No, sir. It’s his son Kayce.” She answered his question.
I nearly jumped up where my head hit the ceiling and I knocked the wooden chair down where it clattered to the floor. “Kayce’s back in town.” She stepped out of the way when I bolted past her down the short hallway.
“The boss should have everything already filled out for you.” The other front desk assistant spoke towards someone.
I rounded the corner halting in my tracks and the boots I was wearing shrieked against the ground. I gasped slapping my hands on the sides of my hips not expecting to see him back here. “Well I’ll be. Look who the horses and cattle dragged in.”
“Y/n! Hey, long time no see.” The younger Dutton turned his head in the direction of my voice, noticing me standing there in some ripped blue jeans and a deputy jacket.
I pushed part of the hair of my ponytail out of my line of sight. “I thought you’d skipped town years ago, Dutton.”
“And leave you permanently to entertain yourself, that'd be a crappy friend of me.” Kayce strides over to me holding open his arms and we embrace the other in a warm hug. Kayce and I had been ready close back in school. Not exactly what you would call a best friend but we were almost close to being that until he got a girl pregnant and we lost touch after that.
I remember the last time we were really close with one another…I’ll always remember it.
The school bell rang and everyone came rushing out of the local Montana high school with me heading outside looking for my father’s truck. That afternoon was very important for my father since he would find out if he had become the new sheriff or not. Sitting down on the metal bench outside I put my backpack down at my feet. “Y/n, what are you still doing here?”
“Waitin’ for my father to pick me up.” Whipping my head around I saw Kayce come out of the back door of the school carrying his duffel bag on his left shoulder.
He gestured with his freehand to the side of the bench that I wasn’t using. “Can I sit?”
“Sure.” Scooting over I made room for him where we sat down next to each other.
He leans back on the seat. “I’m surprised to not see Bridget or Marlowe with you.”
“Marlowe is at home sick and Bridget has cheerleading practice. What about you, cowboy. What are you doing?” I asked him with a curious look on my face.
The son of a rancher answered. “I was heading home. My father and I need to talk about something…something that might change quite a few things depending on how he reacts.”
“Hopefully your father won’t be too angry with whatever you did. And don’t worry if things go south I’ll have your back.” I nudged his shoulder with mine chuckling lightly at him.
Kayce ran a hand through his curly brown hair. “So you’re really gonna work for the sheriff’s department?”
“If I’m lucky enough, yes.” Clasping my hands together in front of me, shifting my gaze up to meet his deep brown eyes feeling my face turning red. “Kayce, can I tell you something?”
He nodded his head simply yes. “Anything.”
“Kayce, I have been thinking lately and I…I think I might be starting to have feelings for y-” I get cut off short when a truck horn honked and we both turned our heads towards the sound.
My father’s truck was parked there with him rolling down the window. “Y/n!, are you ready to go?”
“Uh coming dad.” Snatching my bag off the ground and on my back I waved bye to the rancher. “I'll see you later, Dutton.”
Kayce waved bye to me. “Bye Haskell.” Shutting the passenger truck door I slumped down in my seat glancing back at him outside my window as we drove off considering that was the day I realized I should have told him how I felt sooner.
Kayce and I separated from each other still holding the same familiar smile after seeing the other years later. Kayce stared down at me about to say something before someone came around the front desk. “Dad, when are we going back to the ranch?”
“Dad. You have a kid?” Knitting my brows together I couldn't fathom the words.
He nodded seeing a boy that had similar hair color to him but his eyes were a darker brown. “Hi, I’m Tate. What’s your name?” The kid waved standing beside his father’s hip.
“I’m Y/n. It’s nice to meet you.” I waved to the little boy.
Tate moved his head up tugging his father’s sleeve. “Do you want to come see the ranch with us?”
“Oh Tate, I don't think she’s free. She’ll probably have to get back to work.” Kayce trailed off sending me a half smile.
Shrugging my shoulders I cut him off. “I’m not busy at the moment. My father - the sheriff is just filling out paperwork for the afternoon. If he needs me he’ll call me through my radio.”
“Okay then let’s go.” Tate spun around on his feet, he grabbed my wrist trying to drag me outside the door with him.
I gently yanked my wrist from his gesturing my head down the hallway I had come from. “I’ll just double check with my boss and I’ll meet you two out at your dads truck okay.”
“Sounds good. Come on, kid.” Kayce pushed Tate towards the door, sparing a glance at me before I went around the corner back to my father’s office.
Knocking on the sheriff office door, creaking it open slightly, seeing my father was still working on his paperwork. “Dad, I’ll be back later. Heading to the Dutton ranch.”
“Be careful out there. The Dutton’s are known to be trouble.” He sent me a look.
I sent him a military salute without another word to him. “Don’t I know it.” We had to cover up more of their problems then any other ranch family, but I respected what they did to keep their land.

🥚🌾🎨🌈 and The scene you worked the hardest on in any fic?
🥚 Any easter eggs you put in a fic that you hoped people would notice?
You know, I don't know....I don't know if they count as Easter Eggs, but Constantine is mentioned a few times in Damnatio (before he showed up on Legends of Tomorrow and no one remembered the short lived but brilliant TV series on NBC with Matt Ryan), and MacGyver is alluded to in Bad Things Happen in Magnum. 🌾 A fic you really want to write but you haven’t (yet)?
There are a couple in vastly varying fandoms: one for the Umbrella Academy where it would likely be AU (but every season is an AU, so, techncially that would be canon?) where instead of the apocalypse or end of the world as we know it, TUA is more mundane crime stoppers a la Batman style, and they need Five to go undercover in a school for 'gifted' kids (smart kids versus super powers) and I get to channel all of my 'I don't care how smart the school thinks I am, I still hate it and I'm bored' self.
I have thrown myself SOLIDLY into the Hudson and Rex fandom (anyone who is here because of Magnum, you should really give that show a try - I liked it so much I bought a region free DVD player just so I could own it), so there's like...8 story ideas floating around in there.
Yellowstone - I hate, hate, HATE the media portrayal of adopted kids (whether still as children or as adults) throwing over on their adopted family in favor of the biological one because they always want to know 'who am I?' because out of the adopted kids (or even foster kids) I know, not one of them has been like eeeeeeey, lemme just tell the people who raised me, loved me, treated me as a very wanted child 'yOu'Re nOt mY ReAL mom/dad' and turned into a bad guy for the sake of drama, so the way that they're writing Jamie from second half of season 3 ALL through season 4 had me throwing shit at the TV over a show I used to love. So I have like...3 half finished fics where I don't necessarily RETCON the story line, but at least flesh out the characters and reasoning better (in my oh so humble opinion) so that it's not just Adopted Kid = Bad Kid.
Haunting of Hill House - I have I think like 10k words of a continuing story line that takes place between the last night at the House and when the 2 years later scene takes place that throws ALLLLLLLL the supernatural into it.
I also have a 9-1-1 genfic that is almost entirely written because I hate the shipping discord in that fandom and if I want to find genfic, I either have to read an established b*ddie fic where the romance is so background I can skip over it, or haunt the same three authors until I'm eventually reported for stalking. So I have a 5+1 for Dad!Bobby and Buck.
🎨 Show us a sneak peek from a WIP!
Joke's on you, I have like, 11 WIPS. So you get the random Yellowstone one, even though I don't know if you've seen the show.
Jamie didn’t move. His finger still held along the side of the rifle, not on the trigger, but John wondered how long that would be true. “I’ve always wondered, if given the chance, what I would change. Go back in time and make some other choice. Not listening to Beth when she told me to take her to the clinic so you wouldn’t find out? Not give the interview to that reporter? Not…” Jamie trailed off, staring blankly into the distance, and John watched as his finger jumped to the trigger and back off again. “Not like there’s a shortage of bad decisions to pick from, right? But do you know the one I keep coming back to?”
John could guess.
“We’ve been here before, son,” John said instead, wincing at the creak in his knees and the twinge from his shoulder as he sat down on ground in front of Jamie, hoping to get him to at least look at him. He saw the way Jamie flinched at the word ‘son’ as though John slapped him across the face. “You made the right decision then. You’ll make the right decision now.”
Jamie didn’t budge. The rifle barrel still rested underneath his chin, his grip white knuckled on the barrel and surprisingly light on the stock where his finger tapped against the trigger. “I didn’t know you told jokes, John. Maybe when the ranch is gone, you can take up comedy.”
John growled, ducking his head as he snatched at the tall grass, needing to do something with his hands so he didn’t do something he regretted. “You would make me watch another son die?”
“I wouldn’t hurt Kayce.”
“Jesus, Jamie -”
“Walk away. Whatever…whatever moral obligation you felt to take me in, to-to stop me from doing this the first time, I absolve you from. Just walk away, and come back tomorrow. Take my body to the train station if you have to - you don’t have to put on the show of putting me with Lee or Mom-” Jamie stopped short, sucking in a breath through clenched teeth before he amended it: “Evelyn. Then you can still visit them without visiting me. Just go away.”
He should’ve sent Rip. Or Kayce. Lloyd, for Chrissakes, would be better at this than him, but he wasn’t about to give up. “You think so little of me? I fucking raised you. And you think you can just tell me to walk away, let you kill yourself?”
“I’m not telling you to,” Jamie said quietly. “I’m giving you permission.”
“Jamie-”
“What the fuck do you care?” Jamie shouted, the abrupt anger catching John by surprise so that he jolted back. “Why the fuck can’t you just let me go? You’re the one who told me to do it in the first place - and now - now what? Now what? You’re - you’re angry? You think it’ll make you look like a bad father? I’ll look like a weak son? Fine. Fine. Give me a fucking piece of paper - shit, I’ll carve it into my skin if I have to, that this was one hundred percent me. My choosing. My choice. Tell the world I was fucking adopted, that I’m not yours, that this isn’t weakness from the Duttons, this is some lesser form of being choosing the coward’s way out - this is my two week’s notice - that I fucking quit.”
John was no good at this. What he wanted to do was rip the rifle out of Jamie’s hands and smack him upside the head with it. He wanted to force him to drop it, and make him think twice about ever picking it up again because clearly, the ‘kind and gentle way’ hadn’t given Jamie the perspective he thought it would. He wanted to shake him until his brain rattled enough in his skull to finally knock some sense into him, but Jamie was fast.
Too fast, sometimes. It was easy to forget when Jamie spent most of his life holding back. Forcing a smile on his face and going in whatever direction John pointed him in.
But holding everything in was like a simmering volcano, and unlike his other children who never gave their actions a second thought and just did, Jamie held back until he exploded. It was fast, furious, and Jamie almost always instantly regretted it, making it worse the next time. 🌈 Your favorite tropes to write about?
FOUND FAMILY. PLATONIC LOVE. ALL THE THINGS I WANT AND I CAN NEVER FIND. And naturally, hurt/comfort. probably because it's the only way to have characters to interact that doesn't have everyone asking me about
Tumblr media
The scene you worked the hardest on in any fic?
Oh shit. Ummm. I'll use this as a "things that didn't just immediately flow on the keyboard and I had to stop every couple of minutes to look something up". Mostly things in Magnum because it takes place in the real world with real issues. So out of the published scenes - the surfing chapter in Bad Things (because I have never once been surfing) and the first chapter of Wrong Side because it's a lot to do with tactics and real scenarios while also trying to make it interesting to people who aren't familiar with the military. Also, there's a lot of hoop jumping to make anything realistic canon compliant in that fandom...
Thanks for the asks! (and letting me rant)

Kayce dutton x reader
Reader surprises kayce with lunch at his office
You're a Darn good Wife
Tumblr media
Here's the first official request on the new All Yellowstone blog!!! 😁
Parking my red truck outside the Livestock department office I pushed the driver door open and closed after grabbing the lunch bag of burgers from the place down the street. Entering the building I stopped at the front desk seeing the familiar blonde sitting there named Amy. "What can I do for you, Mrs. Dutton?"
"Is my husband in his office by chance?" I asked her.
She shakes her head no with a half smile. "He's out with the sheriff right now. But he should be back before lunch is over."
"Alright. I'll wait in his office. But don't tell him I'm here." I told her, wanting it to be a surprise for when he comes back. She nodded in agreement, watching me head around the corner out of her line of sight.
Opening his office door, I sat down the bag on his desk, scanning my eyes over the disorderly pile of paperwork he had on it. Sitting out the sandwiches and fries before plopping down in the computer chair scrolling on my cell phone until I heard footsteps coming down the hallway. “Good afternoon, cowboy.” I chimed in seeing him walk inside the office with a bright smile on my face.
“Y/n, what are you doing here?” He dropped his jacket on the hook by the door, opening his arms for me.
I rushed forward flinging my arms around his neck chucking into his shoulder. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist kissing my hair clearly suprised I was there during lunch. “I thought I’d suprised you with lunch from that burger place you like near Bozeman. Considering we barely see each other with you working here and me working on your father’s land since half of the cowboys are up at the Summer Camp.”
“Well I’m certainly not gonna complain about any visit that involves you.” Kayce barely broke the hug gently holding me with his hands on my waist.
My arms stayed around his neck where I sent him a grin. “You better not like my visits. I did agree to marry you even when you told me you had a kid with your ex wife.”
“Hey, you love Tate.” Kayce gasped slightly offended.
I gave him a half smile tilting my head to the side reassuring what I had said minutes ago. “I’m just messing with you. I really do love Tate and treat him like he’s my own kid until we have our own of course.”
“You want to have kids with me.” Kayce’s face brightened at the words that had came out of my mouth.
I responded to my husband. “Of course. I told you on our fourth date that I wanted marriage and kids.”
“I was waiting to ask if we should start trying for a baby and now that I know that. I think we could start right now if you’re up for it.” He bends down on his knees quickly picking me up by my thighs and I wrap my arms around little tighter around hi neck even though he wouldn’t drop me.
I squealed when he carries me over to his desk and he slides some of the papers onto the floor without a real care in the world except me and him in that moment. “Kayce! What about the burgers?”
“Oh don’t worry we’ll be eating them when we’re done.” He smirked at me, moving his fingers down to the bottom of my shirt shrugging it upward and tossing it onto the floor with his own.
I scanned my eyes over his chest feeling my face turning red till I realized the door was still opened. “Wait a second. We have sex with the door wide open. I don’t think your coworkers would like that too much.”
“See we’ve got nothing to worry about. Especially when you’re a darn good wife who looks damn good to me right now.” Kayce ran slamming it closed and locking the door behind him before he rushed back over to me. He stands as close to me as he can possibly get cupping my face in his hands pressing his lips down onto mine.
Threading my fingers into the fabric of dark tan dress shirt seconds before I quickly began undoing the buttons on it and finally launched it across the office. “You better not waste those burgers. Dutton. Otherwise I will you regret your decisions later down the road.” I told before he gently pushed me down onto the desk and he sat the bag of food on the ground.
“Don’t you worry, baby. Once I get you pregnant you won’t be too worried about whether or not we wasted some burgers or not.” He smirked down at me, hovering above me till I wrapped my arms around his neck bringing him back down for another kiss.
He moved one hand over my hip and his other was holding his body up a little so not all of his weight was on top of me. “I’ll hold you to that promise, Kayce.” I broke the kiss where he smiled down at me, reconnecting our lips together and we let ourselves get lost in the other person.

Cowboy take me away (Kayce Dutton x Roy!Reader) Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Summary: You’re Y/n Roy the youngest daughter of one of the richest men in America but all that money can’t make you happy and you decide to move to Montana for a while. But what happens when you meet the youngest son of another influential man?
A/n: it’s here!!! This is mainly a Yellowstone fanfic and you don’t have to watch Sucession to follow along!
You stepped out of the car. The car you bought a week ago, when you were sure leaving was the right thing to do. The warm weather hitting your skin. Breathing in the fresh air after a long drive.
You were the daughter of one of the most influential men in the country. Your father, Logan Roy, was a media mogul and owned one of the biggest news networks in the world. But that came with a price, you had always been in the public eye and on top of that your father wasn’t an easy person to grow up with. Now you’re siblings still fought over being his favorite, still fought for his love. A few weeks ago, after thanksgiving where he hit your nephew you finally realized that he would never change.
So you’d made the decision to leave New York behind, to take a few months off in the country side. Hopefully your mental health would get better out here. And you’ve always wanted to visit Yellowstone after seeing pictures of the stunning landscape. To no one’s surprise your family wasn’t the biggest fans of your decision to go, especially your father who always wanted his kids close to control them. But you were a grown woman, yes you were still in your twenties but an adult nonetheless.
Your siblings thought the idea was ridiculous except for your oldest brother Connor who loved that you would follow his footsteps (as he said). He had also bought a ranch in New Mexico where he spent most of his days.
Now you weren’t so sure anymore if this decision was the right one. You had never left the city for more than a few weeks, hell you were a city person. And you had never been alone anywhere. Your family and they’re staff or your personal staff were with you. But if you’d never tried you would never know.
You took your suitcases and brought the to the small house you were renting. You had put all your clothes into the closets and your toiletries in the bathroom before you went into the small garden behind the house. It was well kept, a bit whimsical and overgrown in some places but beautiful nonetheless. A set of chairs on the lawn and a swingseat under a tree. Yeah, you could do with this.
You made some food with the groceries you picked up on the way here and ate your dinner on the couch. Everything was nice until the evening arrived.
You should have seen it coming, It was your first night and you were already bored. 'Off to a great start' you thought to yourself.
After a quick google search you made your way to one of the bars in town.
Inside it was quite crowded. A band played country music and some people danced. You went to the counter and ordered a simple drink, nothing too fancy like you would have ordered in New York.
Your eyes scanned the crowd, it were mostly cowboys and cowgirls. You must have stood out quite a bit - not too much though since you’ve left your fancier Roy clothing in New York, taking only sweaters, shirts and jeans with you. It was nice though.
”Hey, Tom have you seen my sister?.“ a voice next to you said. You looked to your right and spotted a quite handsome man. He seemed to be around your age maybe a little older, with longish brown hair and brown eyes. He wore a trucker cap backwards on his head and a dark shirt. He looked rugged in the best way. His eyes landed on you and you quickly averted your eyes even though it was probably too late - he had caught you staring.
You felt his eyes linger on you for a moment and you waited a second before you looked back at him.
”'ve never seen you around here.“ he said
”Just got here today“ you told him with a shrug and a smirk appeared on his face hearing that you didn’t sounded like you were from Montana at all.
”Where’re you’re from?“ He asked
”Uh, New York.“ You said and he let out a low blow
”She’s over there.“ the barkeeper interrupted your conversation, pointing his finger in one direction
”Uh-huh. Thanks Tom.“ the man said before he turned to you again
”I’ll have to go but have fun in Montana.“ he said before he turned to leave. After a few steps he turned his head and your eyes met again, with a small nod he turned around once more.
You would lie if you said you weren’t disappointed by him having to leave so quickly. But it seemed like he was just here to pick his sister up anyway and you didn’t even knew if he was single.
The next few days you spend getting settled into the new house. You went to the grocery store, something you haven’t done in years since your family always had people to do these kind of things. But you liked it. Liked being responsible for yourself and you liked being able to meet and converse with others.
Your family always stayed in their circle, almost every meeting with someone you didn’t knew was business related and talk was always about work.
You took walks around town and enjoyed the scenery.
Today you had planned to go on a hike. You looked up the route beforehand so you wouldn’t end up lost. There were other people on a hike but not too many.
Everything was going well. That is until you must have stepped onto a stone.
You fell and felt a sharp pain shooting through your ankle. Shit, if this wasn’t the biggest city girl hurts herself while hiking was the biggest prejudice.
You started to get up when you heard the sound of a horse walking close to you. You looked up as the animal came into your view and felt yourself getting warm. Of course it was the hot Cowboy from the other night.
”You alright?“ He asked and you shrugged
”Yeah, I just sit in the dirt for fun.“
”Shit no reason to get all fuss .“ He said but he couldn’t keep the smile off his face. He got down from his horse and tied it on a nearby tree.
”Lemme see.“ his voice had softened as he crouched down next to you, carefully taking your foot in his hands. Twisting it gently and putting some pressure on some spots. At one point you let out an ”Ouch.“
”It’s not broken - just twisted. Come on let me bring you down.“ he offered his hand to you and you gladly took it. He helped you up, looping his arm around your back so you could lean on him.
Once you were sitting on the horse he got up too, sitting in front of you.
”You can hold onto me.“ he told you, voice kinder than you’d expected.
You intertwined your fingers in front of his stomach. You felt warmth spread in your stomach.
He took the reins and the horse started moving. You looked around, taking in the scenery.
”Wow it’s even more beautiful up here.“ you said in a low tone.
Kayce smiled at your words. To be honest he was maybe a little glad about the fact that it was you who he found. You had come to his mind a few times since he’d met you a few days ago.
You had intrigued him, there was an air about you that he liked and felt like he wanted to find out more about you.
”Where are we going by the way? Not that I think you’ll kidnap me on a horse.“
”My fathers Ranch. My cars there, I can drive you home.“
”Oh. Thank you.“ you said
”No need to. Just basic human decency.“ he said and you cold hear the smile in his voice.
”Yeah, I’m not used to that in the city.“ you chuckled in wich he joined in.
”Why’d you come here?“ he asked
”I needed a fresh start. I wasn’t happy in my, uhm, my living situation in New York. I knew I would get depressed if I stayed.“
He hummed
”Are you feeling better now?“
”To be honest I’m not sure. It feels great that I’m away from everything but I don’t know anyone here yet… so it’s kind of lonely.“
He hummed as an answer.
The rest of the ride to the ranch was filled with easy chatting. You found out about that his Dad owned a Ranch where he worked as a horsetrainer. You told him you worked in Media at your fathers company, not telling him who your father was.
The ranch was gorgeous. A big stone house as the main building, some stables and a few smaller houses. You earned a few looks from some of the cowboys leaning against a fence.
He got down and helped you safely get back to the ground.
”I’d show you around but I think your foot wouldn’t be too fond of that.“
”Maybe another time.“ you told him and he studied you for a second
”Yeah, another time.“
He had given the horse to one of the men standing close by, who was called Jimmy. Telling him to bring it back into the stable.
He helped you into his red truck and closed the door after you sat in the vehicle.
You told him where the place you stayed in was and he seemed to know where to go. The conversation was easy between you, he pointed out some places.
”You can get good burgers there.“ he said pointing to a diner
”We could do something if you’d like? I mean because you said you felt kind of lonely.“
”Oh? Yeah that be great.“ you smiled wich caused him to smile too
”Okay.“
He helped you up the front stairs of your place and you waved as he drove away. With a warm feeling and the thought that maybe you had made a friend you went inside.
