in the aftermath of the Final Days, not many bodies were left to bury, regardless of location. the monsters that were felled disappeared into ash and smoke; those who died by their own means were often found and eaten by said monsters, gorging on their aether to fight another day.
in Garlemald, with the winter still raging and wild beastkin coming closer to the city after it's fall, it was an even harsher truth: those who perished before turning scarcely had chance to be buried. the ground was frozen solid; some were buried under snow, as with the sisters the WOL and twins encountered, but the act was short lived. (the beastkin, much like the people of Garlemald, had evolved to survive on what was available... and they had no qualms with digging out corpses to sup on.)
when Jullus finally returned to his home, broken and wrong, he knew he would not find any remains. what he did find, however, was far more salvageable:
his mother's wedding ring.
it was little more than an iron band with a reef knot in the middle, a design dating far before their forced emigration to Ilsabard. it's often still used in La Noscea in much the same way: a symbol of protection and relief.
it took Jullus a few weeks to locate a necklace chain to put it on, but the ring - nor the necklace - has left him since. it's hidden under his layers of clothing and carefully out of the way to prevent it from being snagged.
