Hazel was in awe of Austira and the little town of Zell Am See where Easy Company and the rest of the 506th currently resided. There was a beautiful lake in the center of the town, and stores and restaurants that lined the edges of the water. At night, after dinner in the mess hall, Hazel would walk around the town by herself, admiring the beauty of the Austrain town. In the background, was painted the beautiful picture of the Austrian Alps, with their snow capped peaks and deep green trees.
She liked to sit by the shore of the lake, and admire the glow of the lights at night. She imagined they were lanterns, set free and flying up to the sky, their beauty and their bright light in the darkness their only shine. Sometimes one of the men from Easy would join her and they’d hit the town together at night, sometimes in duos or trios, laughing and talking and walking around enjoying the freedom, and the end of the war.
Many of the men knew how often Hazel spoke of the lights that lined the shores of the lake, and how much she simply just adored them and thought of them as lanterns. She always talked about going up into the mountains and setting one off, but she never found the time.
One night, she’d gone out, setting out for a walk around town by herself, as the sun was close to setting, when she heard footsteps from behind her, running towards her. She turned and stopped to see it was Joe Liebgott. A smile lit up the brunette’s face.
“ Hey, Hazel, wait up!” he called as he raced up to her, stopping by her tiny frame and looking down at her.
“ Want to join me, Joe?” she asked him, and Joe smiled.
“ I think I got something cool we can do.” Joe said. Hazel looked at him, innocently confused at what he meant.
“ What do you mean? Don’t you want to come see the lights with me?” she asked, looking at him with big, blue eyes, and her rosy cheeks, and long eyelashes.
Joe couldn’t stop thinking about how cute and innocent she did in fact look.
“ Trust me. You’ll like what we’re doing.” he said, with a smirk.
Joe Liebgott had befriended Hazel back in Toccoa. The young girl had to run up Currahee alone at night one time because Sobel had been stubborn about how long her hair was. Hazel hadn’t given, in what seemed to be Sobel’s mind, the right answer. Hazel wasn’t that terrified of him though, it seemed, and she valiantly raced up the mountain of Currahee in the dark.
It had been a summer night, just like this, in Toccoa, when she came back inside, sweaty and exhausted, a slight smile on her face as she walked over and took a seat on her bed next to Shifty’s. That’s when Liebgott had approached her for the first time, in her entire time of being in Toccoa, and sat down beside her.
Liebgott did realize he probably looked rather stupid and sounded dumb when doing so, as she would’ve probably wanted more than anything to take a shower or something. He’d said something dumb like, ‘ Sobel knows not to mess with you.’ It was dumb, very dumb, but Hazel had smiled, that beautiful smile he loved so much.
From that day on they became best friends, partners in crime, two peas in a pod.
So now, standing here, as she looked up at him with wide, expectant eyes, he had to shake himself from the trance he was in.
“ You up for a hike?” Joe asked her. Hazel smiled warmly.
“ It’s a bit late, but sure!” she said and Joe’s heart swelled. He’d never been so infatuated by someone before. Her eyes were bright, and as the made their decent up the side of the mountain, to the lookout he had planned, he couldn’t help but feel his heart race. They weren’t going to the top, just a lookout he and Chuck had found hiking around one day, the perfect place for his idea that he knew she’d love.
Hazel was smiling the entire time they went up the mountain. Her hair was in a messy bun on her head, with little pieces clipped back while other strands fell in front of her face. Liebgott personally loved when she wore messy buns. She always fussed and said she was just low on time and had to do something quick, but he thought she looked rather adorable. He never said it aloud though, but he had hinted it once or twice, something she hadn’t heard at all.
As the hike continued, it got increasingly darker with each step and the forest around the mountain grew darker as well. Liebgott watched as Hazel instinctively drew closer to him, as Liebgott clicked on a flashlight.
“ It’s dark.” whispered Hazel as she looked towards the forest and its trees.
“ Just a bit.” Liebgott said as Hazel gently wrapped her arm around his bicep. They both felt the warmth from that touch spread but neither of them said anything as they continued their walk.
“ You know, George told me something funny yesterday.” Hazel started and Liebgott’s heart dropped. Liebgott had been the one to tell George about the plan as well as Chuck, and they were the only two. George had been the one that helped set everything up.
“ What’d he say?” Liebgott asked, worry eating at his insides.
“ He said he enjoyed the hikes in the mountains,” Hazel said and Liebgott glanced at her.
“ He said you always found stuff in the mountains, like animals and bugs and insects and cool views.” Hazel said, “ Stuff like that.”
Liebgott’s heart regained normal speed.
“ Oh yeah, the views are the best part.” Liebgott said, nearly having a heart attack thinking George had spoiled everything.
“ Like at the Eagles’ Nest?” Hazel asked with a smile. Liebgott smiled.
“ Yeah, definitely like the Eagles’ Nest.” Liebgott said. They continued walking as it got increasingly darker and soon Hazel was growing tired.
“ I think we’re lost.” Hazel said looking up at Liebgott who looked more awake than ever.
“ No we’re not silly, it’s right up here.” Liebgott said leading her forward around a bend.
“ Are you sure? We’ve been walki-“ Hazel stopped talking and saw the beautiful sight in front of her. The view was immaculate, she could see the entire town and the lights and the lake, with the mountains in the background. She watched as birds, big, proud, powerful birds flew overhead, so close she could almost touch them. She could smell the freshness of the cool night air, and taste the sweetness of the flowers.
But that wasn’t the best part. On a blanket, where a few little blankets were, was a lantern, lit up in what seemed to be liquid gold, shining brightly and flickering under the moonlight.
“ Oh, Joe!” Hazel barely whispered out putting a hand to her mouth as she slowly stepped forward. Joe watched as Hazel slowly let go of his arm and walked forward, eyes shimmering with glee at the beauty of the sight. Hazel gently sat down on the blanket that was spread out, and brought the lantern into her lap. It was beautiful.
Hazel turned around to look towards Joe, who was slowly walking over, hands in his pockets, a little smirk on his face, and a few strands of his gelled hair hanging down. She could see his dog tags, as they clanked together as he walked over and his white undershirt was peaking out from beneath the OD top. Her cheeks flamed at the look he was giving her and she immediately looked back at the lantern, eyes shining.
Liebgott slowly sat sown on the blanket next to Hazel and glanced up at her face in the faint light the lantern provided. He could see the freckles on her cheeks, and the curve of her cute, button nose all so up close.
“ Joe, this is all so beautiful.” she said looking over at him. Joe smiled.
“ You always talked about how the lights looked like lanterns, and wanting to see one set off. I had some of the guys help me set this up.” Joe said as the smile on her face warmed and grew.
“ It’s beautiful, Joe, really. I couldn’t be happier.” she said. She shivered a bit, grabbing one of the soft blankets and wrapped it around herself.
“ Better.” she said with a slight giggle and Joe smiled.
“ Can we set it off?” she asked looking at him with the blanket wrapped around her shoulder, looking warm and cuddled up.
“ Of course, here let me light it up completely.” he said as she handed the lantern to him. Joe gently held the lantern up and lit underneath it to make it float into the sky. Hazel watched with adoring eyes as Joe bit his lip gently lighting it and then leaned back from it. He looked over at her and smiled.
“ Here you go.” he said, handing her the lantern. Hazel took it in her hands and smiled at the glowing ember of light that danced like a thousand fireflies. She slowly raised it to the sky and then let it go. She watched as the tiny, mighty lantern flew up into the sky, catching the breeze a bit as it did so. She couldn’t stop smiling as she watched the lantern move through the air.
Joe’s gaze was on Hazel the entire time. He couldn’t even look at the lantern because Hazel’s beauty far surpassed it. Without thinking about it, he slowly reached forward and gently pushed one of those strands of hair behind Hazel’s ear softly and gently, causing her to look toward him.
Hazel’s smile slowly dropped, as she looked towards Liebgott. His warm hand was gently laying against the side of her cheek, his fingertips sending trails of fire over her face. Her heart started racing, and she became warm all over her face. She couldn’t stop watching his lips as they came closer and closer to her own. His eyes were slightly daunting, staring deep into her soul, as if they were begging to unlock the gates that held her back. They were mesmorizing.
Liebgott couldn’t take it anymore, as he placed his lips on hers. Hazel’s eyes widened before they gently slid shut, wrapping her arms around his neck as he pulled her closer than they’d ever been before, to himself. It was filled with passion, and warmth, and safety and comfort, and Hazel had never felt happier being in Liebgott’s arm, up on a mountain with a beautiful view and a lantern floating overhead. She loved every second.
Liebgott and Hazel were slow in pulling away, both afraid to open their eyes and gaze at each other, after what just happened. But then Hazel giggled, and both their eyes opened. Their heads were close, and before Liebgott could do anything, Hazel giggled even more and gently pressed her forehead to his. She let out a giddy laugh. Liebgott smirked as he gently kissed her lips again before pulling back and looking at her beautiful face. Hazel was smiling, she was practically glowing. She had never looked more beautiful with that messy bun, snuggled in a blanket under the moonlight. Liebgott gently kissed her nose as she scrunched it back like a hunny and giggled.
“ I adore you, so much Hazel.” Liebgott whispered as he gently put his forehead to hers again. Hazel smiled at his touch.
“ I think I adore you more Joe.” she whispered. She smiled, she was happy.
She was happy that she had almost been lost with Joe Liebgott.

this is another one of those strangely serendipitous moments, i was just readint about rembrandt day before yesterday, i never really cared about paintings, but i was reading about early european monarchies and the catholic church then neoclassicalism which was meant to be in response to the protestent reformation art, i was interested specifically in the protestent reformation art it was responding to, rembrandt was given as an example and i read about the jewish bride, it struck me as so odd that now they know that a jewish bride isnt whats been depicted in the painting at all, they arent sure what the painting is of, could be family members of his, could be isaac from biblical times. there is this air of mystery around paintings, the idea that theres all this too it thats beyond the grasp of everyone really and thats why what appears like a bunch of garbage trash is actaully a priceless treasure, but if that were so, why did an austrain collecter think it was a painting of a jewish wedding? its not a painting of some abstract blobs! its just people, i feel like i cant trust any of it
