a little excerpt from a thing I may or may not finish about kiara's kook year
Sometimes, Kiara looks at you and thinks she’s dreaming. That’s the only explanation she can come up with for how she managed to get a girl like you to sit on the beach watching the sunset with her. You had spent all day together. Kiara overheard the conversation you had with Rafe when he called. You had ditched them for her. Instead of being with your best friends, you spent the day spoiling Kiara.
The day started with breakfast at this cute mom-and-pop diner tucked away in the Cut that Kiara likely would never have found on her own. She ordered waffles and then laughed so hard she almost cried when you decided to explain all the reasons pancakes were better. They talked about school, Kiara’s parents, and even the friends she misses but can’t talk to anymore. You had sipped your coffee and eaten your pancakes as you listened to every word out of her mouth. It felt almost intoxicating to be the centre of your attention like that. A last-minute decision was made to catch the ferry to the mainland so you could show her a handmaid jewelry store you thought she would like. Kiara spent the entire ferry ride playing with your fingers, trying to convince herself to just hold your hand. As you stepped off the ferry, you slipped your fingers between Kiara’s and pulled her along after you. Kiara didn’t let go again, not even when heading back to the ferry hours later. Coming back to the island meant your date was over, but Kiara didn’t want the day to end.
That’s how you ended up here, sitting in the sand on some random corner of the beach, watching the sun dip behind the horizon. The dying rays make it look like you're glowing. Your black braids are a light brown in the sun. Even your dark eyes are lighter. Kiara wants to kiss you. After your first kiss during a drunken game of truth or dare, you guys haven’t done it again, but Kiara has thought about it every day. She thinks about kissing you so often it's a miracle she has gotten anything done at all. Though sitting here with you so close, it’s a physical sensation that Kiara can’t get rid of.
“What are you thinking about, Kie?” you ask, turning away from the water to look at her.
“You,” Kiara replies. “Always you.”
