This stunning shot was taken at a rain- lashed Manhattan waterfront, sometime in the early 1970's.

At left, the SS. France is the longest passenger ship that the world has ever seen. She is also the largest. Her brace of winged funnels make her completely unmistakable.

At right, the QE2 is suave, stylish, and seemingly endless. She is a desperate, determined attempt to drag the Cunard brand out of a financial maelstrom, and back into calmer, more profitable climes.

The France is docked at her regular berth at Pier 88. Though widely regarded as the finest, and certainly the best fed of all the great liners, the rocketing price of Bunker C crude oil means that she is already on borrowed time.

As for QE2, seen here at Cunard's Pier 90, she would briefly become a hastily improvised troop ship within a decade of this picture being taken...
