     It isn’t any secret that Genya, his siblings, and his mother were abused by his alcoholic father. Kyogo is deeply hated by the family, especially by Genya and Sanemi, but he often disappeared for days or weeks on binges to spend almost every cent they had.

     The time when Kyogo was gone gave the family time to care for itself as a unit, for wounds to be patched (certainly on their mother, who always tried to protect her children from that man), meals to be made and money to be found. Genya had to grow up much too quickly in order to be able to provide for his brothers and sisters, but he never once complained.

     His mother’s smile and his big brother’s encouragement was all he needed to keep going, no matter how hard or laborious the work was. Genya often had to help their mother cook, clean and take care of the siblings even after coming home with Sanemi after a day of odd jobs and farm work in the village.

     Because of all this Genya is actually incredible with kids, can cook decently well, and tends not to complain when he’s made to work hard as long as he has someone to back him up. On the flip side, the smell of alcohol sends his stomach into cartwheels and he will step in when he sees violence against women. (He apologizes to Kanata for pulling her hair during the Final Selection, and immensely regrets allowing his anger to get the better of him like their father.)
