BEHIND THE CAMERA -> CHAPTER 11

anon: sorry for this very small chapter, but i wanted to write about it

The end of the year brought a bitter chill to the Leclerc family, not just from the biting winter winds but from the lingering disappointment in Arthur's heart. Yn could sense her little brother's dejection as he sat in the cozy living room of their Monaco home, surrounded by the warmth of family. Arthur, the youngest Leclerc and once-promising F2 driver, found himself at a crossroads. His dreams had been shattered with DAMS choosing not to renew his contract, leaving him questioning his worth as a racer.

Pascale, the matriarch of the Leclerc clan, wrapped her arms around Arthur. "Mon chéri, you are not a failure. Racing is a tough world,success comes not only from victories but also from overcoming challenges, and setbacks are part of the journey"

Charles, the elder brother, added reassuringly, "You still have so many opportunities, Arthur. You'll bounce back stronger. It's just a bump in the road, not the end of the race."

Lorenzo chimed in, "Tu es toujours notre champion, même dans les moments difficiles. (You are always our champion, even in tough times)"

The sun hung low over the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as the Leclerc siblings gathered at the pit lane. Yn felt a surge of pride and anticipation as she watched her little brother, Arthur, prepare to take the wheel of Charles' scarlet Ferrari. The familiar aroma of petrol and rubber hung in the air, mixing with the nervous excitement that buzzed around the pit.

Charles, the eldest of the Leclerc siblings, leaned against the pit wall, his eyes fixed on the Ferrari with a mix of pride and concern. Yn could sense the weight on his shoulders as the team prepared for the upcoming Formula 1 season.

Arthur, having faced a challenging season in F2, had found himself without a seat for the upcoming season. However, fate had a different plan for him as Ferrari welcomed him as a development driver. The Barcelona test was Arthur's chance to prove himself, driving the same car that his older brother would soon race in the 2024 Formula 1 season.

"Allez Arthur. Montre-leur ce que tu as dans le ventre!" (Come on, Arthur. Show them what you've got!) Yn told him, her words a mix of excitement and encouragement.

Charles patted his brother on the back, saying, "This is your moment, Arthur. Show them what you're made of."

Arthur, his eyes gleaming with determination, climbed into the cockpit. The roar of the Ferrari engine echoed through the circuit as he sped down the straight.

Lorenzo, their older brother, stood nearby, offering a reassuring nod to Charles. "He's got this, Charles. Arthur has the talent, just like you."

Charles managed a small smile, appreciating Lorenzo's support. The roar of the engine drowned out further conversation as the Ferrari roared to life. Yn couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement as the car pulled out onto the track.

Yn exchanged a look with Joris, whispering, "Il a tellement grandi," (He has grown so much).

Pascale, stood with a proud smile, capturing the moment on her phone. "Regardez-les! Mes enfants extraordinaires!" (Look at them! My extraordinary children!)

Joris, Charles' best friend and Yn's boyfriend, stood beside Yn, squeezing her hand gently. "Il va tout déchirer sur la piste, tu verras." (He's going to tear it up on the track, you'll see.)

Yn grinned, her eyes never leaving the speeding Ferrari. "I know he will, Joris. I just hope he gets a chance in F1 this season."

As the red blur of the Ferrari streaked by, Arthur's skill behind the wheel was evident. The radio crackled to life, and the team's communication with Arthur began. "Comment ça se passe, Arthur?" (How's it going, Arthur?) Charles asked through the headset.

"Ça va bien, Charles! La voiture est incroyable!" (It's going well, Charles! The car is amazing!) Arthur's voice crackled back, a mix of excitement and determination.

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Race 12 - Italy

si ragazzi etc etc etc

Seb's third win in Italy! But That year was also McLaren's 50th anniversary race... spoiler alert it did not go well.

I don't really remember much from this one, though I think Alonso was on the podium as well? Anyway let's jump in!

Once again going to be that person and say how I still miss the old F1 intro :(

The new one is fun and all but can you say 'nnnnneow' at the end? no you can't

Anyway, Monza v v pretty

aaaaand starting grid: SEB POLE!!!,

HULKENBERG P3??????

What the fuck is a polar bear doing in Arlington, Texas?!

(I legit had to pause to process that, wtf)

ahem, moving on: Alonso P5, Dan P7, Jenson P9, Jev P10, Lewis P12 (ouch :()

Truly that was the most whiplash I've had during a starting grid overview. Yikes.

There is something hilarious about a Ferrari powered Sauber out qualifying both Ferraris at Monza though

[Formation Lap]: ooh Lewis starting on hards, makes sense considering his starting spot (also set to be the best race tyre according to Bono on team radio).

The mediums are the other dry tyres for this race

ayyy there's some of the McLaren guys in their vintage style team uniforms (dare I say this maybe be the origin of the dress up race curse, bc I'm pretty sure both Jenson and Perez finish outside the points despite starting in the top 10).

Oh! The thermal image camera! I remember that!

[Start/Lap 1]: many, many things happening in the braking zone for turn 1...

Seb had a good start though!!!

Top 10 is Seb, Massa, Webber, Fernando, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Dan, Perez, Jev and Raikkonen

cut to Di Resta missing a front wing and out the race already

And Rosberg is already being asked to cool his car it is not a good day for Mercedes

I mean Seb is 4.5 seconds ahead of Fernando, but still

[Lap 11]: Ah Lewis has caught up to the back of Jenson, maybe the hard tyres are starting to work

Cut to Seb, now 5.5 seconds ahead of Alonso

and PHEW the front right Rocky was speaking about was the tyre, not the brake

[Lap 12]: ...Lewis has a slow front right puncture

His not good quite bad Italian GP, I have no idea if his radio is still broken

oh Andrea Stella spoke to Fernando in Italian, that's fun

[Lap 13]: Lewis hasn't pitted. 🙃

Bono once again asking Lewis to pit, and the mechanics are in the pit lane.

Apparently someone from Merc was very aggressively waving Lewis' pit board so he could see it.

Why am I getting mildly anxious over a race I watched live a decade ago?! 😭

[Lap 14]: Lewis finally pits, and someone held up a sign for him while he was stationary. He's on the mediums and in 19th

[Lap 21]: Meanwhile the frontrunners are all still to pit, which for them to do a one stop at Monza in 2013 is really quite impressive

Webber continues to chase down Massa

[Lap 22]: and Jenson pits for a set of hards, so that'll be him till the end on paper

oooh a lesser spotted for 2013 Lewis fastest lap!!

[Lap 24]: And Seb also pits for hards, he's the first of the frontrunners to do so

oh and in comes Webber too! Not quite a double stack considering their gap on track but still impressive

[Lap 25]: Fernando and Andrea are continuing to chat over the radio in Italian, Crofty is twisting himself into knots trying to translate

and another Lewis fastest lap, it's like a 2014 season preview

He's in 10th though, and chasing Bottas down for 9th

[Lap 26]: So currently top 5 is: Alonso*, Rosberg*, Seb, Gutierrez* and Webber. (* = still to stop)

Lewis is up into P9!!

Hmm, Fernando has a 17.9 gap over Seb, which isn't quite big enough for a pit window

[Lap 27]: Meanwhile Rosberg pits, so Seb's now up to 2nd

This race really has been eventful and uneventful at the same time, it's wild

[Lap 28]: And Alonso finally pits while Rocky tells Seb off for going too fast

Seb re-takes the lead

Top 5 after the first/only stops: Seb, Fernando, Webber, Massa and Raikkonen

[Lap 29]: Oh damn Lewis has caught up to the back of Rosberg

aaaand Lewis got past him for P7

[Lap 31]: Raikkonen makes his second stop, he made a very early first stop due to getting damage at the start

Another Lewis fastest lap, and he's battling Hulkenberg for P6, though he may be stopping again too

[Lap 32]: His mediums are 18 laps old, so maybe the logic is to burn through them putting himself as par up the road as possible to minimise the damage from his second stop?

And while I typed that Lewis did a SEXY move through the inside of Curva Grande, he's now in 5th

[Lap 33]: Meanwhile on Seb watch, he's 11 seconds ahead of Fernando

and the McLarens are in 9th and 10th (Jenson, then Perez)

[Lap 34]: 🚨20 laps to go klaxon!🚨

[Lap 36]: Rosberg has caught up to Hulkenberg

...and went off at the first chicane

(I refuse to have Hulkenberg win the Nico war)

[Lap 37]: Merc mechanics out in the pit lane, possibly for Lewis

...or not they've gone back in

and cut to the Merc pit wall

Was it the classic Merc fake pit stop or is Lewis' radio still fucked? We may never know

[Lap 38]: Bono telling Lewis to pit

... and he once again doesn't come in

Meanwhile Grosjean takes Perez for 10th

[Lap 39]: And in comes Lewis for his second stop and another set of mediums, he comes out in 14th

[Lap 40]: Oh Webber has caught up to the back of Alonso 👀

If they go side by side through a chicane again I might die

They're 12 second behind Seb, who is continuing to do Seb things

[Lap 41]: And cue Webber bad luck, he's having to short shift in the lower gears

[Lap 42]: Another Lewis fastest lap for F1 bingo

cut to some midfield fisticuffs

[Lap 43]: Lewis chasing down Gutierrez for 13th, who fun fact is a test driver for Mercedes now

[Lap 44]: Seb's being told to short shift as well but in different gears (2-3 for Webber, 5-6 for Seb). RBR I know it's been ten years but I am going to slap you.

Meanwhile, Lewis passes Gutierrez for 13th

[Lap 52]: A Seb sighting!!!! He's still leading by about 8 seconds

Raikkonen takes Perez for P11

[Lap 53]: "We've got enough issues, just bring it home" Local man is passive aggressive with little shit colleague

Lewis locks up going into the second chicane and has to let Grosjean back through

meanwhile SEB WINS IN MONZA!!!!!!!

(yes, that's how far ahead he was)

ngl, that race was quite odd. Stuff happened but there wasn't that much racing until the last few laps but the race wasn't completely boring either???? So yeah, odd.

Buuut, next race - my most most beloved Singapore!!!

2023 Bahrain Grand Prix - Race Report

First of all, hello again, everyone from the 2023 Formula 1 season for which we have been awaiting and even counted the days for over 160 days after a looooooooooong winter break. The Bahrain Grand Prix has been good for all of us motorsports fans, as we have missed the action. It was a great race, despite some unexpected events taking place. So what happened during this race for which we have counted the days? Let's take a look together.

Raining Penalties For Alpine and Esteban Ocon!

As you would remember from the last season, everyone was annoyed by the FIA's decisions: from Red Bull fans to Mercedes Fans, Ferrari fans to Haas fans. Unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed for the 2023 season. As the French driver Esteban Ocon made a millimetric mistake on his grid spot, he was quickly faced with a 5-second time penalty as the FIA cited the reason as ''incorrect starting position''. Alpine and their young driver Esteban Ocon opted to serve the given time during their pitstop; they were shocked by a 10-second penalty. This time the reason cited by the FIA was ''penalty served improperly''. As the young Frenchman served this penalty during his 2nd pitstop, he was hit with another 10 seconds, this time for ''speeding in the pit lane''. As a result, despite having a reasonably lovely qualifying, Ocon couldn't have a lasting advantage. We are extending our support to the young driver.

None Can Stop Super Max!

Red Bull & Max Verstappen's well-known team-driver compatibility continues to elicit admiration and jealousy from fans & opponents. As he is the ''defending champion'' for the 2nd time in 2023, Max Verstappen seems to have his eyes on the 3rd championship in a row. As confidence in himself and his car and aggressive driving style continues to elicit admiration and hate from others, the young champion seems to have vowed to show the same mesmerizing performance. Max opened the season with a victory as he was 12 seconds ahead of his teammate in 2nd place. We congratulate him and wish for the continuation of his success.

What Happened To McLaren?

McLaren, a team loved by many racing fans, made an unlucky start to the season. The team that added the 2021 Formula 2 Champion, young Australian rookie Oscar Piastri to their lineup next to the young Briton Lando Norris; had to pull their rookie out of the race with a steering wheel issue while they saw the chequered flag in only 17th place with Norris also having similar troubles. We hope that these troubles are soon gone for McLaren. Looks like the new technical regulations caused a prominent disadvantage for some of the teams. As we mentioned are affected by the new directories, it would be a shame on our end to not have mentioned Mercedes, one of the most successful teams in the history of our sport. As Mercedes made an unexpected start to the last season (2022) but later developed great for the 2nd half, they made an unlucky start for the 2023 season. While they are experiencing some aerodynamic issues currently, we are sure they will handle it as soon as possible and return to the front of the grid as they should. We wish them the best of luck.

Aston Martin, Alonso, and an F1 Fairy Tale!

Undoubtedly, the surprise of the race and the season is Fernando Alonso in Aston Martin. Aston Martin made an AMAZING start to the season, giving the fans a fairy tale. After adding Dan Fellows, trained by Red Bull's Adrian Newey, to their lineup of engineers, the team appears to have made a strong car. The ''sly old fox'', 42-year-old Fernando Alonso, opened the season with a podium in 3rd place.

Get Well Soon & Congratulations Lance Stroll!

We continue our report with Aston Martin. The young Canadian driver of the team, Lance Stroll, had a horrific accident on his bicycle before the race. Despite having platinum plates placed in his hand with a surgical operation, Stroll was present at the race and saw the chequered flag with points. We hope that he gets well soon, and we also extend our congratulations to him. Let's see what he does with Aston Martin's strong car.

Ferrari & Frustration, AGAIN!

We talked a lot about Ferrari's unfortunate mistakes throughout last season. Unfortunately, the Red team made an unlucky start to the season again. Young Monegasque Charles Leclerc had guaranteed 2nd place throughout the race when on the 41st lap, his engine lost power, and he came to a halt. Since Leclerc is deeply frustrated, strong rumors of a team change for him are circulated on social media. We are curiously following him and wishing him the best of luck.

Red Bull Opens The Season with Bıg Victory!

The successful team Red Bull, having secured a constructor's championship after 9 years in 2022, opened the 2023 season with a double victory after Ferrari's young Monegasque stopped on the track and Sergio Perez snatched the 2nd place. Red Bull is cited as a favorite to take 1st and 2nd places frequently. We congratulate the team and the 2 drivers.

In summary, while raining penalties marked the race, Red Bull drivers saw the chequered flag in 1st and 2nd place. On the other hand, Aston Martin completed the podium with Fernando Alonso in 3rd place and made a surprise start to the season.

Sneak Peek! Chapter 17: Roman Profile

Okay this is a bit long for a sneak peek but I couldn’t bring myself to cut it down anymore than I already had lmao

You’d fully intended to startle him, to walk as lightly as was humanly possible across the kitchen, navigating around the colossal kitchen island to where he stands in front of the stove, chattering away, his back turned to the arched entryway where you now linger, as he gestures animatedly with one hand, brandishing a stainless steel spatula covered in what looks to be half cooked scrambled eggs like it’s an extension of his arm.

But, now that you’re here, hovering in the doorway and watching on, the world’s happiest spectator, the nagging voice in the back of your head that had urged you to come find him, pushing you out of the comfort of bed and to abandon any thoughts of going back to sleep, quiets down to a dull hum, the sound cheerful and content like it too is more than willing to just soak in the view.

Evidently having deemed his navy dress pants to be an unnecessary item of clothing for cooking breakfast, Daniel is wearing nothing but his boxers and a apron he’d found God knows where, as he returns to pushing the eggs around the pan, still talking merrily to whoever it is on the other end of the phone. It can't possibly be safe to cook in so little clothing but clearly safety is a sacrifice he’s happy to make and if he’s fine with the risks, you’re not about to start complaining about the benefits of the dangerous arrangement.

Honestly, you’d be infinitely more tempted to make Daniel go get dressed, regardless of the apron because the thought of the potential injuries you wouldn’t put it past him to accidentally inflict upon himself, if it didn’t come down to the extenuating circumstances of the situation.

The first of which is that he’s a 30 year old man and he can make his own decisions, however unsound or shoddy they may be. The second has less to do with any concerns for physical safety and entirely more to do with the sight of his back, muscles rippling beneath tanned skin with every slight movement. Lastly, there’s also the fact you’d donned his discarded, rumpled button down before leaving the bedroom to contend with so instead of interrupting, you simply consign yourself to leave Dan be.

Honestly, you can’t even bring yourself to be ashamed for the way you’re ogling him at the moment because as far you’re concerned you’ve been given the rights to disrespectfully check out his ass whenever you damn well please the very moment Daniel had you bent over on the car last night, his mouth brushing your ear as he told you that he didn’t care and that it didn’t matter if people talked about him fucking his girlfriend on the hood of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.

Because as he’d said, word for fucking perfectly defiled, desecrated word, “I love you and if I want to fuck you bent of the hood of a quarter of a million euro car, I’m gonna fuck you bent over the hood of a quarter of a million euro car.”

By the time you manage to extract yourself from the tail spin just recalling that particular line, sends you in and find your way dazedly back up memory lane, extracting yourself from the the thicket made up of every other filthy fucking thing he’d said last night, of the ghost his hands and his body molded against you, of the press and the stretch of his cock buried up to the hilt in you, the gaps left in the recollection of which are easily filled in by the sound of his voice floating through the air, you’ve entirely missed every word Daniel had actually said and failed quite completely to even notice he’s no longer on the phone at all.

Luckily, he’s still thoroughly unaware that he has company, so deeply entrenched in his own little universe that he doesn't even realize the world has narrowed to include just the task in front of him and whatever song it is that’s blaring through the speakers of his laptop.

No, Daniel has absolutely no idea and that doesn’t matter because right now, he’s the happiest man in the entirety of existence, in the history of humanity. Not because his life is flawless and beyond reproach but because he’s so adept at finding exactly what he needs, at finding a way to be content and ardently committed to enjoying every single moment that he gets in some manner.

And God, you fucking love him for it.

Even as you think it, a smile tugging at the corners of your mouth, the grin unfurling across your face, Daniel’s fiddling with his phone, tapping at the screen a handful of times before the music suddenly cuts out, leaving nothing but a burgeoning, impossibly loud silence in its wake, the only sounds filling the lull in noise pollution is the gas stove top and the sporadic scraping of the spatula through eggs, keeping them moving just enough that they don’t burn while he hunts down a plate.

Daniel’s mumbling something as he works and now that his headphones are off, and there’s no music to skew his volume to being just shy of hollering, you can’t quite seem to catch what he’s saying, though it sounds a great deal like a jumbled up mess of ‘now toast’, ‘plate, fucking plate, growing fucking legs did ya?’ and then what is definitely ‘how the hell did that not wake her up? I swear to God she’d sleep through anything… and shit, toast, FUCKING CUNT toast-’ Daniel stopping cussing at the burnt bread long enough to sigh heavily, straighten his apron and promptly yanks the cord of the toaster straight out of the socket.

Still muttering obscenities at the slightly smoldering toast, which has now been cruelly abandoned on the counter top, though it most certainly does not look edible if the shade the charred black is anything to go by, Daniel turns around, pulling at the apron in frustration as if taking out his agitation with the toaster on the poor garment which, to your utter and sheer delight, has of all things Mr. Good Lookin’ Is Cookin’ scrawled across the front of it.

Daniel nearly drops both plates heaped high with scrambled eggs when he realizes that he is not alone and that you’ve not in fact managed to sleep through his scheme to wake you up but recovers quickly, the reflexes that should theoretically should have been able to save the toast finally kicking in as if they’d just put their foot down about losing what remains of breakfast.

“Before you ask, yes, this apron is correct, I am exceptionally good looking and I am indeed cooking. And also yes-” Daniel wastes no time setting the plate in his left hand down on the kitchen island to point a warning finger at you, daring you to cut him off with whatever it is that he already knows you’re gearing up to say, “I did purchase this for his buck’s night, bachelor party, whatever you want to call it and I have to tell you, I’ve been dying to wear it since I brought it. Okay, now, go on, lemme hear it.”

He’s grinning even as he says it, now waving a hand encouragingly at you, clearly expecting something scathing or taunting to come out of your mouth, rightly making the assumption that your go to instinct with him is to turn this into some battle of the wits banter. So, you go the complete opposite direction, the decision fueled in equal parts by where your thoughts had been just a few seconds ago and the desire to drag him down with you, and just a little hint of not wanting to do what thinks you will out of pure spite to round it all off.

“How attached are you to having eggs for breakfast? Because, you know, all I have on is your shirt and if you asked nicely you could just have me on the dining room table before the food even gets cold-”

“Look, I love you but I don’t know why you’re still standing there fully dressed and not already on that fucking table.”

HOW DANIEL RICCIARDO STARTED MY JOURNALISM CAREER

For a longtime fan of any sport, meeting one of the athletes that they are forever looking up to can be a lifelong memory. We spend our weeks working and saving our money to see these people in person and what they do, while our weekends off are occupied by following their every move on television and social media. Formula 1 is no different, but when I managed to meet a person I dearly admire in the sport, it was an experience that would change my life, for the absolute better.

In case we haven't met yet, my name is Coilin and I am from Ireland. When I finished school at seventeen, I felt at a dead end. My friends all went off to college and university to new beginnings while I felt so lost in figuring out what I wanted to do, I was sort of left behind. I took up a job in the local furniture factory where I still am today, and despite being forever grateful to hold that job, I always aspired to be more.

In 2018, I and a mate from work took a trip to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix. For a person who only left Ireland once before for the previous year's British Grand Prix at Silverstone, I was both nervous and very excited to experience a new country and knew I would instantly feel at home once I got within the confines of the Circuit de Catalunya.

The following morning was a Friday, and I set off into the city to find the bus station for the bus to the circuit. My mate fancied a few more hours in bed with the intention of meeting up later so I headed out alone, not afraid by the unfamiliar streets and customs.

Barcelona is like pretty much any other city, a main road in the middle with smaller streets surrounding it. When I got to this main street, my google maps suggested crossing the six-lane wide street, which obviously I couldn't do. Walking down the street in an attempt to find a crossing, I spotted a dark blue Aston Martin DB11 in the traffic beside me. I didn't really stop to look until I noticed the decal on the side of the car. 'Aston Martin Red Bull Racing' and the all too familiar figure waving at me out the window. Surely not...

It was Daniel Ricciardo on his way to the circuit with his trainer Michael Italiano, who had noticed I was wearing his Red Bull cap. I took a breath, knocked off the google maps app on my phone and chanced my luck. The moment I approached the car he let down his window and greeted me with that familiar accent. He then comically told me he didn't like my Ferrari shirt and I was to change it when I got to the circuit. A solemn remark to the rumours of a move to Ferrari at the time. I couldn't believe it.

I asked for permission for a picture to take a picture at which the traffic light went green. Michael, who was driving went to take off when both of them noticed my instant disappointment. Daniel then insisted to wait and took my phone from me in order to get a proper picture of us together. I was in shock, they took off and it was over. I honestly could not believe what just happened.

Long story short, we returned home after a great weekend the following Monday and I couldn't stop talking about the encounter, or how good Dan was to me. I spread it all on social media, told anyone I could, everything. That's when I encountered Drivetribe, and decided, without trying to gloat, to share this amazing story.

I didn't think much of the article, and it was full of your typical spelling and punctuation errors, but did it take off. Soon, the article was full of comments both praising my work and sharing their own amazing stories of encountering Daniel, each as special and unique as the next.

Thanks to that first article, motorsport journalist Rob Burnett, who was head of the F1 tribe on Drivetribe at the time, got in touch and suggested I continued article writing as he felt I had a real promise for it. Then, it all hit me. My favourite subject at school was English, writing stories and essays, and I never had anywhere or anyone to properly share my love of F1 or motorsport, why not fuse the two together and give this a proper shot?

Three years to the day, I am now studying to become qualified in freelance journalism, met and interviewed the likes of David Coulthard and Nicky Grist on behalf of Drivetribe, as well as write for a number of different news sites and agencies. I have yet a long way to go, but I know what I want and for one of the only times in my life, I've got a proper end goal to work towards, to become a proper motorsport journalist in the future.

It was all thanks to Daniel's kindness that day, that simple encounter changed my life for the better and gave me a purpose and something to work for. Part of my ambition is to someday meet Daniel again in better circumstances, and explain just what he did for me that day. I owe it to him to say thank you.

For now, I will continue to work hard and not stop reaching my end goal. I adore this sport above anything else, and I am determined to work hard and make it someday. It's something I never thought I would be interested in, but thanks to that simple five minutes of decency and the effort to spend time with a starstruck fan, Daniel put somebody who felt a little lost in life on a road of pure determination and desire to chase a career I didn't think was possible. DANNY BOY BRINGS HOME THE GOODS

Dan Ticktum became the home hero, winning the F2 Sprint Race, his first victory in the category, ahead of Christian Lundgaard, as Callum Ilott’s rotten luck doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.

Ticktum led every lap of the race having started on pole, but didn’t come under any real pressure until Lundgaard charged up behind on fresher, softer tyres, but ran out of corners to pass the Brit.

Meanwhile a rare driver error meant Ilott missed a huge opportunity to close the gap on Championship leader Robert Shwartzman, who had another quiet race.

Drama on the grid again saw Giuliano Alesi stall towards the rear of the field, Lundgaard immediately stormed past the Charouz of Louis Deletraz on the outside into Abbey.

Going into Village Yuki Tsunoda took a very strange wide line before trying to cut back to the apex, making contact with the car of Ilott who was already there on the inside of the track. Tsunoda ended up spinning 180 degrees and stalled his car, ending his race, while Ilott was harshly awarded a five second time penalty.

The Virtual Safety Car was briefly deployed, which disappointingly spread out the field slightly, but not before Guanyu Zhou put a very brave move on Mick Schumacher at Copse. On the restart the cars were relatively well spaced out, except for Pedro Piquet and Sean Gelael, with DAMS drifting on the gravel on the exit of Luffield in his pursuit of the Brazilian.

Lap seven saw Ilott start to charge through the field, fighting past Felipe Drugovich for P5 at Stowe, whilst a lap later, Ticktum was out of DRS range and pulling away from the rest of the field.

Lap eight also saw cars going three wide into Stowe, yesterday’s winner Nikita Mazepin passing Drugovich, whilst Zhou put a stunning and brave move on the pair of them. Excellence from Zhou, but dismal from Roy Nissany, who continued to make himself look like an amateur in the Trident, spinning all by himself down at Brooklands.

Robert Shwartzman, who’s had a difficult weekend, looked like he was starting to come through the field when he passed Jack Aitken for P10 at the Vale chicane, however it was the other Championship contender who was really starting to fly.

Ilott managed to pass Deletraz for P3 around the outside of Brooklands and then Lundgaard, again around the outside, this time of Stowe, for P2, and started to charge after Ticktum in the lead.

The Ferrari Academy Driver was 0.7s quicker than Ticktum on laps 13 & 14 as he continued to hunt him down, stretching the advantage he needed over the rest of the field with his time penalty.

This was only until he spun out between Vale and Club, getting on the power too early and dropping it, unable to avoid stalling the car and ending his race immediately. Desperately unlucky, but able to make amends at the same circuit next weekend.

With the Safety Car out, Lundgaard, Shwartzman, Schumacher and Gelael were amongst those who took the gamble for fresh rubber, however the DAMS gamble quickly backfired, with Gelael having to pull over at the end of the pit lane as one of his front tyres wasn’t properly attached. He didn’t pull over quick enough and went past the pit lane exit line, meaning the mechanics couldn’t fix the issue. Sending the Indonesian driver into retirement alongside Tsunoda and Ilott.

Shwartzman’s gamble also didn’t work out, an incredibly slow stop, thanks to his front right tyre not coming off to be changed, dropped him down the order, whilst Schumacher was also unable to make up the lost ground in the final few laps.

Racing resumed on lap 19 and the final laps were dominated by Lundgaard charging through the field, as he was the only car who made the fresh rubber work. He immediately got past Mazepin for P4, whilst further behind his team mate Armstrong passed Piquet around the outside of Luffield and Woodcote as he looked to fight his way into the top ten.

Lundgaard passed Zhou for P3 on lap 20 and immediately closed up to the back of Deletraz, as Luca Ghiotto’s quiet morning ended in retirement at Brooklands.

Deletraz went too deep at Village, allowing Lundgaard through, giving him nearly a full lap to chase after Ticktum, however it was too little too late, Ticktum having built up enough of an advantage to beat the Dane home by just under 0.4s.

Jehan Daruvala stole P4 from Mazepin on the line, to make up for losing out on reverse grid pole in the latter stages of yesterday;s race, whilst the other Brit, Jack Aitken took the final point in P8 but only thanks to Zhou spinning out of the points at Maggots, but was able to limp home to P9.

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 9 - Germany

You have no idea how excited I've been to get to this race on my season watch through. Germany 2013 was Seb's first and only German GP win and frankly I'm very surprised that I'd never watched it before now.

This was also the second to last F1 race to be held at the Nürburgring (the last being the Eifel GP in 2020), and I'm ngl I likely picked it over Hockenheim to host the German GP in Life In The Fast Lane because of this race 😅

So this live blog post will likely go off the rails when the sebfucker meltdown kicks in, but for now let's jump in!

Honestly, for me this race onwards is likely going to be my favourite part of my 2013 watch through. Seb winning at home, then Lewis in Hungary, then Seb winning all the races from Belgium to Brazil. 11/10 would recommend to a friend on TripAdvisor.

Anyway, let's jump into the starting grid:

Lewis pole, he had a decent amount of them in 2013 given that fact that the car wasn't quite up to scratch (#JustLewisThings), Seb P2 🥰, Dan P6!!!!, The Ferrari's in 7th and 8th?! (??????), Jenson P9!!!! It could have been worse!!

Helmet watch: Seb's helmet for this race was *chef's kiss* so good.

[Lap 6]: oh god they're investigating the unsafe release after the race aefjeihfe clown show stewarding once again

[Lap 7]: anyway Lewis pits for his first stop, softs off for mediums. He comes out in 10th.

[Lap 8]: and in comes Seb, also softs for mediums

and he comes out ahead of Lewis!!

Red Bull did have a quicker stop, which definitely helped

and interestingly they've come out behind cars that started on the mediums, so they're going to have to do some on-track passes early on

[Lap 9]: oh shit one of the tyres came off Webber's car and hit a cameraman.

the cameraman's being tended to by Merc mechanics and FIA medical staff, thank goodness.

[Lap 10]: And Lewis gets past Raikkonen for 7th

[Lap 11]: and Seb overtakes Jenson for P3

oh god. Lewis is behind Nico Rosberg. my eye is twitching.

I know this was before 2016, but watching this after the 2016 season is... yeah... I'm having anxiety.

[Lap 12]: There's been a team radio call for Nico to let Lewis by but I'm still feeling dread at seeing them be one behind the other.

[Lap 13]: Meanwhile there's a Lotus right behind Lewis waiting for an opportunity to get past.

[Lap 14]: So Grosjean pits, Seb retakes the lead, and Romain comes out in net P2, since Jenson ahead still has to stop

oh phew Lewis is finally past Rosberg, he's in P5

Grosjean passes Jenson on track for P2

[Lap 16]: The Lotus' are so quick, may be due to the high track temps suiting them

and Rosberg is finally called into the pits

Seb's still in the lead with about a half-second gap over Grosjean, who has 6-7 tenths over Raikkonen

It's funny watching this knowing who wins, but not how it happens.

[Lap 45]: Seb almost get's the move done round the outside of turn 1, but Lewis juuuust edges it, but Seb eventually takes P4 in the arena section

[Lap 46]: Lewis makes his 3rd and hopefully final stop

Top 5 now Raikkonen, Alonso, Jenson, Seb and Grosjean (Jenson's still to make his second stop for softs)

Starting to wonder if someone on the McLaren pit wall accidentally had a mid-race nap in the motorhome

[Lap 47]: Seb's closing up to the top 3, and he's about 15 seconds behind Raikkonen

[Lap 48]: Jenson finally pits!!! he comes out in 6th

It's worth noting though, for anyone who hasn't seen any races from 2013, that the first half of the season was very different to the second when Seb won every race. Seb and Red Bull only won 4 races in the first half of 2013, Mercedes won 3, Ferrari won 2 and Lotus won the first race in Australia. the 2013 grid was competitive to a degree. Seb just was in bastard mode for the second half of the season.

[Lap 52]: Grosjean been given team orders to not hold Raikkonen up 😬

Maybe I need to rescind my earlier comment about Seb driving off into the distance while shit happens behind him.

[Lap 54]: Okay Seb is roughly 2 seconds ahead of Grosjean

this is way more intense than I thought it would be dbhvudbhsuh

[Lap 55]: and with the help of some team orders Raikkonen gets past Grosjean (believe it or not, he was still seen as a championship contender in this part of the season)

WHEW. That was a race. A bit of a slow burner, but the last 10 laps were mad. And seeing Seb win his home race is just 🥹
