Any good underrated musical recommendations? You seem to know your way around the goodies
i really dont but off the top of my head
bloody bloody andrew jackson: a semi-ironic pop-punk musical about andrew jackson. my favorite song is illness as a metaphor and the best song is the corrupt bargin.
a gentleman's guide to love and murder: this one actually won the tony for best musical several years ago but no one ever seems to talks about it. it's a comedy musical about a victorian guy learning he's in line to become an earl so he has to murder all his comedically posh relatives. my favorite and the best song is i've decided to marry you
something rotten: this one was really popular a few years ago and still somewhat has a tiny fandom. it's about a playwrite in the renaisance who really hates shakespeare so he invents musical theatre to try and compete with him. my favorite song is i love the way and the best song is it's hard to be the bard.
beetlejuice the musical: this one is actually hugely popular but I just wanna mention it because it is So Good! and a lot of peope don't wanna give it a chance because it's a ip musical and those tend to suck but this one is actually good!!! (same thing with spongebob the musical and legally blonde the musical (legally blonde has some eehhhhh kinda dated stuff but it still great)) idk if i have a favorite song theyre all so good but the one that's grown on me the most is barbra 2.0 and the best is probably say my name
frankenstein a new musical: it's suprisingly faithful to the book, this has the drawback of some odd pacing issues but the songs slap! the best song is amen and my favorite is modern prometheus
ghost quartet: this is a very artsy musical by dave malloy about some time travlers?dimension hoppers?reincarnationies? where a girl is trying to get revenge on her sister for dating her crush. this musical takes like at least 3 listen throughs to fully appreciate. the best song is any kind of dead person and my favorite is usher part 3
natasha, pierre, and the great comet of 1812: another one by dave malloy and another one that is popular but not enough people talk about. it's an adaptation of a chunk of the book war and peace that is actually word for word in some places. the plot is kinda dense and hard to explain but it's a good one to listen to if you need a good cry but in a yearning kinda way. all the songs are so good i can't pick a fav or best
octet: it's another dave malloy musical. this one is an acapella musical about an internet addiction support group. this one is kinda depressing and gets really real but it also gets really weird? like its 90% damn it really do be like that and then there's one song (little god) where a bunch of scientists meet god and it's like wtf is going on. my favorite and probably the best song is candy.
clown bible: this one is really obscure as it's dave malloys first musical so there's only a few songs available online and a like a few production stills. the plot is it's the bible, but theyre clowns. yeah. my favorite song is i love this god of mine and proably the best song is judas
repo the genetic opera: a cult classic horror rock opera movie musical. the plot is kinda hard to explain but it's about a girl in a distopian future where body mods are a normal thing but they can be repossessed if someone falls behind on thier payments. this one's kinda messy but my brother and i loved it when we were edgelords in middleschool. my favorite song is probably zydrate anatomy and the best is probably at the opera tonight.
the hunchback of notre dame: it's the disney movie but as a stage musical. this is the best of the disney stage musicals despite never making it to broadway. my favorite of the original songs is thai mos pias and the best is probably the finale.
death takes a holiday: this is my brothers favorite musical! it's about the grim reaper taking a vacation and falling in love. the best and my favorite song is alive.
there's also like most frank whildhorn musicals but they kinda all run together in my head
tanz der vampire: a german musical about a girl being (willingly) abducted by a vampire and a guy trying to 'rescue' her. the english version really sucks so it's def best subbed. my favorite song is draußen ist friheit and the best song is probably carpe noctum
