Haven't made a post about seeing Frank Turner on Tuesday yet so here goes:
- Really interesting (and unusual, at least for FT) setup for a gig. All seated, and it was in two pretty distinct parts - the first was songs from his new album No Man's Land (which is about different women from history) interspersed with their stories, just Frank onstage with a guitar.
- Second part was him with his band the sleeping souls, unplugged, playing songs from his back catalogue, interspersed with stories about his life/what he's learned/what inspired them
- I really loved Graveyard of the Outcast Dead live, just really lovely
- He fucking nailed the guitar solo in The Death of Dora Hand (direct quote "that was one of the best times I've ever played that!")
- Weird slightly hilarious part spoken word version of The Ballad of Me and My Friends to start the second part of the gig
- Didn't expect to hear Journey of the Magi in 2 out of the 3 Frank gigs I've been to, but life throws you curve balls bro
- Frank talking about how awkward it is that he wrote a song about and named after his ex now he's married to someone else...then getting genuinely embarrassed when he introduced the title and of the song (Isabel). Bless. I felt that.
- He got me fucking crying with Reasons Not To Be An Idiot wtf Frank?! That's one of his most upbeat songs! But "why are you sat at home, you're not designed to be alone, you just got used to saying no" really got me along with his introduction to it.
- The whole Amy trilogy got me fucked up tbh. I mean, this time last week I was bawling my eyes out to Tell Tale Signs so it makes sense I guess (last week was Not Good mental health wise)
- Really appreciate Frank changing old lyrics to be less sexist/heteronormative. I've stanned the change in The Way I Tend To Be since I first heard it, but he also changed "his wife and his dog, his son and his god" to "his child and his dog, his wife and his god" in journey of the Magi and "just picture her after she's had kids" to "just picture her when she's whisky dick". We stan people realising and acknowledging not so great things from their past content and striving to make them better!
- God, I love The Way I Tend To Be so fucking much, and the slow acoustic version with everyone singing along to the chorus was just beautiful. Probably my favourite song at the moment.
- Frank's depiction of himself as a 19 year old "dressed in a trench coat, with an existentialist novel sticking out of the pocket, wandering round London's reservoirs, hoping to meet girls and thinking about death". Incredible.
- When he wrote There She Is (for his then-girlfriend, now wife) they were in Rome, he woke up before her and decided it would be romantic as shit if he could write a song for her before she woke up and then perform it for her. She obviously woke up halfway through. He told her to go back to sleep, she said no that's weird wtf, eventually went to get coffee, he finished the song. And apparently it was romantic as shit. But Frank, you absolute dork.
- Balthazar, Impresario is a really gorgeous song and I should listen to it more
- He finished the storytelling part then got us all on our feet for the last four bangers (Photosynthesis, Recovery, I Still Believe and Be More Kind) and it was grrrreat
- I wouldn't usually class Be More Kind as a banger but he went really hard on the last verse/chorus (the wind blew both of us to sand and sea etc) and it gave the song something I didn't realise it was missing
- Basically it was a+++, I laughed, I cried, I sung, I listened. My absolute favourite artist to see live at the moment. When can I see him again?
