It's really weird seeing the discourse over Alina's ending in the books, where people hated her loosing her powers and living off in some farm with Mal, only to turn around and go "but if she was with the Darkling-". This take completely ignores the fact that, in the books, Alina never truly wanted her powers nor did she want to be in the spotlight. Sure she had things to work out and everything, and may have even grown to find solace in her abilities but that doesn't necessarily mean she became less when she lost them (a narrative that some seem to think?)

It also ignores how much trauma the Darkling had put her through--from him harassing/grooming her, to making her have to constantly look over her shoulder for a big chunk of her life, and so much more. If you didn't like her ending, that's fine, but don't go around pretending as if her staying with the Darkling would have been any better. It also feels like a lot of projection going around with people thinking she's suddenly living a bad life simply because she choose to live out the rest of her time with her partner and working at an orphanage, something that she is entitled to do so after everything she went through. It's also nor like she's struggling financially, like come on, her friends are literal royals, she is fine.

It also seems like a lot of people go and take an easy route of simply ignoring her relationship with Mal, seeming just to hate it and view it as unimportant, when that also takes away from valuable aspects of her character. Mal is important to her, whether people like it or not, just as much as she's important to him (like are we going to ignore how he risked everything to go and find her? Literally being labeled a deserter!) Do I think there are some codependent elements at times? Yes, but that doesn't mean that both can't work through that and become better. That is one thing I will give the show credit for, which is having them not only verbally state that, but show Mal going off to find out more for himself, but people still used that as an opportunity to hate on him. Like 🙄.

Dude yong jie’s character is literally unbearable this is like how not to write a vharacter 101

Our first intro to him is stalking, then PUNCHING someone in the LIVER bc the person he “loves” was fucking drunk and he blames his best friend? Then his mom is like “lmao actually um hes psycho” so anything they try to do retroactively like how they peppered in HIS DAD DIED A BLOO BLOO but previously it was also his OWN MOM going “im afraid he’ll lose his humanity” so not only was there no breathing room then it’s bumrushing him into their lives as best friends and it doesnt work. This dude sucks and he isnt even fun to watch. You know how breaking bad has one of the most abysmal main characters of all time but all of us were fucking ENGROSSED but the show made it clear that every enemy he faces, even the DEA, we want THEM to win (it is also a class analysis but woreva) so i am like wtf they show us literally nothing here. There’s no returning point deom rhe line they croased byt theyb set him up for failure. Also it is up to yong jie to figure put how to get over it and understand that his brother is concerned for him. Bc it is. His brother. There’s a reason that incest is never advisable and thays bc there is no way in that situation that people aren’t somehow being coerced. There has to be a sort of split in the pursuer and the person being pursued bc one person is not thinking that way. (This is why people who find out they are related after the fact and havent grown up together is something thatms really unfortunate. They had no idea and they have to grapple with that but that is another scenario and it happens bc THEY DIDNT GROW UP TOGETHER.) i have experienced this from a (not immediate) fam member and i was the vulnerable one, had less powr, that is how it must go.

Thats why the power imbalance is scary and none of this is acceptable but it begs the question how did they get to this point? But the show doesnt even address that bc they cant bc theyre not original. And power imbalance does not mean automatic absolutely not territory. I havemt seen “right or wrong” and i have no desire but from what ive garnered from ppl i like who liked that episode, the show outlined the moral issues with it. Idk if they did it in a way i would have preferred (again no desire) but at lesst from what ive heard it...tries? Idk i dont see the need for these if they dont give us a reason why these ppl should be together and there’s several lines that cannot be crossed that were. Basically it’s like stockholm syndrome now and there’s no choice for him, it goes beyond power imbalance and “legality” so to speak and now it’s just entrapment.

Theres not even avoiding or enjoying. Even for MODC as stupid as i found the secondary rship and negligent even like ok. Fine. Whatever. His boyfriend is 100 but at least it was semi agreed upon. "Is he coming?" Nano leaned over his brothers phone, trying to read it.

Samuel clicked it off. "Yeah, but he's bringing Ander."

If Omar reacted to that, he hid it well.

"The more the merrier." Nano said.

"Why does he need to hurry?"

"I want to smoke, and I was going to wait for him."

"Smoke..."

"Pot, little brother. Can you handle that?"

"You shouldn't do that shit. Either of you." Samuel looked between them.

"What about me?" Marina asked.

"You do it?" Samuel looked horrified.

"I might," She shrugged. "Is it any good."

"Yeah." Omar certified.

Samuel looked like he wanted to complain, but Christian arrived before he could, walking around the corner with Ander at his heels. Omar and Ander made eye contact for a moment, but passed it off.

"Hes here!" Nano cheered.

Omar reluctantly reached into his jacket and pulled out a bag, passing it to Nano smoothly. They probably wouldn't be seen here, and there were no cameras, but he was still careful.

Christian sat cross-legged beside Nano and produced paper. "I can roll?"

"No," Nano was grinning. "I have something better."

"Are you criticising my rolling?"

Nano reached into his own jacket and pulled out a pipe. "Tonight we dine like kings," He proclaimed.

"Can I see it?" Marina asked.

He passed it over to her and she inspected it, her rings clattering against the hard wood. Eventually she gave a nod of approval and passed it back.

Samuel was critical of the weed, especially of Marina doing it, and he was critical of the way they were passing it around, a puff each. He thought it was unsanitary.

"I suggest we play dares," Marina spoke up, a couple of rounds in.

"Sure," Samuel agreed.

"Samu, I dare you to try it," Christian waved the pipe at him.

"No way."

"C'mon. Whats the worst that could happen?"

"Look," Omar interjected. "If he doesn't want it, why waste good weed on him?"

"Fine," Christian gave it to Marina. "Nano, then, I dare you to kiss Marina."

"Hey, thats not.." Samuel started to complain.

"If you're going to wine about every dare. Then why don't you leave?" Nano said, harshly.

"Shes my girlfriend."

"Its a dare, unlike you Im not scared to do them."

Samuel looked to Marina for her side. She shrugged at him. "Its a dare, Samu."

Nano leaned across the circle, towards her, and she gave the pipe on to Ander and met his lips. Nano let himself breath her in for a moment, let himself get temporarily reacquainted with her hand on his jaw. Then he remembered Samuel right next to her and let her go, sinking back onto the floor on the other side. 

Samuel kept quiet. 

"I dare Omar," Nano announced. "To ride my bike."

Ander glanced nervously at Omar, pipe frozen between his lips.

"Do you have your helmet?"

"Its over the handle."

"Then, sure," Omar got up and pulled on the helmet. Ander was still watching him.

He straddled the bike, "I have actually rode this before,"

"When?" Samuel asked.

"When he first got it. I can do alright until a corner."

"There are quite a few corners here."

"I'll go diagonally."

Omar pressed the ignition and felt the bike vibrate to life beneath him, he imagined it was much like riding a horse, all of that powe just beaneath him, ostensibly under his command, but never truly controllable.

He met Anders eyes across the square, and smiled, trying to act cocky. "You don't trust that I can do this?"

"Of course we do." Nano grinned at him.

He rode of, somewhat shakily, and even attempred the corner, before almost fallong and putting a foot down to stop himself, it wasn't the conclusion everyone had been waiting for. Nano and Marina had half-wanted him to fall, not to be hurt, just to fail. Ander and Christian had been hoping he would kill it. Samuel had just wanted him to not die.

"Okay," Omar sat down again. "Who's next?"

"Ander," Christian said. "I dare you to shotgun the pipe with Omar." 

"Shotgun?" Ander asked.

"Like where you take a breath, and kiss him." Marina clarified.

"You want me to kiss Omar?!"

"No, no," Christian shook his head, "Its a thing, It's fun."

"I don't know..." Omar complained, recalling sharing a pill at Samu and Nano's party, how it tasted to get high off Ander, like he couldn't tell whether the drug or the kiss what exhilarating him.

"Nano kissed my girlfriend, you can 'shotgun'” Samuel told him, still salty.

"Fine," Ander took the pipe from Nano. "Omar?"

"You've never done this before?" Omar asked.

Ander shook his head. 

"Okay, just do what you'd normally do, but breath out into me."

Ander took a hit, and turned to Omar, who put his hand onto Anders neck to steady him, then kissed him, opening his mouth with his lips, and inhaling the smoke without flinching.

Omar clearly knew what he was doing, and Ander wanted to freeze under his touch, either that or pull him deeper, but he didn't. He breathed out and shut his eyes for a moment, basking in the temporary freedom. He was kissing his boyfriend in front of their friends in the open air.

Omar pulled away slowly, when he couldn't hold the breath anymore. 

"What was that called again?" Ander asked, already needing Omar back.

"Shotgun."
