Gosh golly geez I just found this in my drafts and I think it’s really old, but I had almost finished the whole thing so IDGAF, I’m posting it! 🤗

glow

The cavern was a glittering cathedral of rough rock, the ceiling of it stretching higher than Callie’s light would reach, and she made it bigger and brighter when they crawled through the small entrance and into the main part of it. A beautiful place, he noted, when he could observe it freely, unafraid for his life. The blue-green shimmer of her magic reflected everywhere, off the shiny bits of mineral that covered this place, making him think, ridiculously, of glowworms.

She wasn’t taken in by any such sense of whimsy - she was troubled. “It’s not the same,” she said. “The first time, I reached for it and there was just, this pull. I could feel it.”

[Fun story, this scene is an odd to the most beautiful thing I have ever seen that I could not photograph: the pitch-black depths of a New Zealand cave with absolutely nothing visible except for - you guessed it! - blue-green glowworms. I was on a group tour with a real basic camera so there was no opportunity for a long-exposure shot, and I think even if I could have set one up, it still wouldn’t have done it justice.]

Mmm, Nauxial hummed inside her head. He’s strong.

Of course he couldn’t feel Simon through the telephone line; he was only reacting to Riley’s impression of him, formed long ago.

“We were making progress in the Extraction classrooms,” Ken said, by way of greeting. “What’s this about?”

“Simon’s got an idea nobody’s thought of yet that’s gonna save the day.”

“We’ve all thought of it,” he corrected Dig, tearing his eyes away from the view of the mountains, through the snow that was finally starting to relent. “Nobody wants to say it.”

[I had a hell of a time deciding whether to use “tear” as a verb or “tear” as the noun. Callie cries over everything. She’d cry if she chipped a nail.]

“No,” she moaned, like a child being told to finish their vegetables. “I don’t want to.”

“It doesn’t matter what you want,” Riley said, making an effort to keep her voice even. “We’re here for a reason, remember?”

Callie’s face crumpled, and she buried her face in her hands. “I can’t, then. Alright? Are you happy now? I can’t hold the shift again, I barely made it in here. It was too hard.”

She blinked. “I thought you said it was easy. Easy as pie, is what you said to me when you let me in.”

“Well, I lied. I do that.”

She beat the door with the palms of her hands after the shoes were ruined and her feet were too tired, and then she started using her fists. This, this wasn’t even completely their fault, they didn’t know when they put her in here that in her undiluted form she was toxic, that when her layers of paint curled and fell off there was a rotten core. That if they kept her locked up for too long she’d poison the air and die from exposure to herself. They didn’t understand that. They couldn’t.

Wayland Nickleby of Bellemont Academy arrived a few hours later, right around the time Ash Alvarez of Davenport emerged from her room, looking rested and radiant. Simon made a valiant effort to divide his attention between them, but Ash - well. They got along, and she carried the ocean with her, the aura around her mind as warm as the sun. He could hear the seagulls when he shook her hand.

“Yeah, it’s… quite a place you got here,” Wayland said, only polite words. Dark, he thought, quiet, dead.

It was, compared to Bellemont, the oasis in the desert with its greenhouses and gardens, the sun reflecting through colored glass.

“It’s home,” Adrian replied. “Comfortable, I’m sure you’ll find, and lacking in no luxury.”

“Are you ready?” she asked. She didn’t need to speak above a whisper; the silence in the forest was absolute. No wind, no birds, and certainly no other people - perfect stillness.

Peter smiled and shook his head, like he was entertaining a complete lunatic. “I don’t know how to be ready for this,” he laughed.

The baby was on his lap, wrapped up in a blanket with giraffes on it. It was a simple and beautiful moment. Rich and their dad were talking about sports or something. Their voices were dreary and inconsequential compared to the light at the end of the sofa.

“Simon?” his dad called from somewhere close and faraway. “Did you hear a word I said?”

“Give him a break, dad,” Rich said, through a mouthful of potato chips. “He’s tripping on baby thoughts.”

“Am not.”

“You’re laughing at the lamp, bro.”

Was he really? He, Simon, was in there somewhere and knew it was just a lamp. But it was also an inexplicable, glowing warm blob of pure wonder too. Just a lamp, and not just a lamp, all at once.

[I always thought telepaths would have weird experiences around babies. Simon loves being near happy babies. When they get upset though, he has to get a bit of distance 😂]
