why is the idea of close reading a tv show so insane to people. how is it different from close reading a film or a book or a poem. it's a text like any other text and is open to being read as a text

#luna and i are complaining about this but i had to complain some more #like it just feels so obtuse to me. why are you acting like this isn't a piece of art that can be analyzed #why are you operating under the assumption that the decisions that created what youre seeing on ur screen were somehow random or arbitrary #or were made without thought being put into them #not every goddamn tv show is bbc sherlock or lost #honestly i think failing to see where a project was made thoughtfully and intentionally is a failure to meet a text where it is #just as much as snobbishly discounting the value of less sophisticated/more 'lowbrow' art is a failure to meet the text where it is #i just sometimes get in my feelings about everybody wanting to be a critic without recognizing that being a good critic is a skill. like #it takes work. it takes thought. it takes practice. it takes attention. it takes a level of charity and graciousness #but most people just shit out any unconsidered opinion and call it a day without even thinking anything of it #like. art always deserves to have its due ykwim and so often things just don't get their due bc no one cares enough to pay attention #occasionally they'll get unearthed and critically reevaluated and seen for what they are. but sometimes that never happens. and that sucks
