Croatia cabinet wear jerseys after World Cup semifinal win

Zagreb: Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and his ministers held a session on Thursday dressed in red-and-white football jerseys to mark their country’s win over England that sets up a World Cup final against France.

Plenkovic, who returned from Moscow where he attended the semi-final, congratulated the squad on a “fascinating success for Croatian sports and football”.

The victory of captain Luka Modric’s side is “Croatia’s biggest promotion,” said the prime minister.

It shows “the strength of a country which is not big, but has a big heart … and these boys who went a step further than the brilliant 1998 with (Miroslav) Ciro Blazevic,” he added.

Plenkovic was referring to Blazevic, the legendary coach with whom Croatia finished third at the World Cup in France twenty years ago.

Croatia’s success in the tournament seems to have boosted interest in the country, proud of its more than 1,000 islands and islets.

The national tourist board said its online page views grew by 250 percent compared to the same period last year.

“Croatia’s passage to the World Cup final is a historic result which has made us the focal point of world attention,” head of the board Kristjan Stanic said in a statement.

“It is an exceptional chance for additional promotional activities.” The board has made a shortened version of the country’s 2018 tourism promotional spot “Croatia Full of Life”, featuring football players including Modric, Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic.

The country of around four million people hosted more than 18 million tourists last year.

Croatia’s achievement in reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup has revived national pride in the team which, for more than a quarter of century, has played a crucial role in the young nation’s identity.

Nếu nói Lazio vượt quá mong đợi sẽ là một nhận xét không đúng. Sau chiến thắng 3-0 trước Udinese trong trận đấu muộn vòng 21 diễn ra giữa tuần, đội bóng có biệt danh “Le Aquile” (đại bàng) đang đứng thứ 3 trên bảng xếp hạng Serie A, hơn Inter Milan 3 điểm. Họ cũng đang có mặt ở bán kết Cúp quốc gia Ý và đứng đầu bảng đầu của mình ở đấu trường Europa League.

Nhờ Ogli Tare, tiền đạo Miroslav Klose chuyển sang chơi cho Lazio vào năm 2011. Chính Tare ở lại Brazil 10 ngày hồi năm 2013 để giám sát việc ký hợp đồng với Felipe Anderson, người mà ông ta cảm thấy có tiềm năng trở thành một cầu thủ tầm cỡ thế giới. Trong khi Roma tái đầu tư số tiền đó bằng cách phá vỡ kỷ lục chuyển nhượng của họ khi mua Patrick Schick với giá 42 triệu bảng, thì cú mua mạnh tay nhất của Lazio là Adam Marusic, người chỉ làm đội bóng mất 7 triệu euro.

Khi để ý những gì cả Inter Milan và Roma đều cố hết sức trong 6 tuần vừa qua, thì niềm tin thực sự cho vị trí thứ ba trên bảng xếp hạng vẫn thuộc về Lazio.

Roma hiện đang đàm phán với Chelsea để bán Edin Dzeko, dù chưa bán được tiền đạo 31 tuổi này nhưng AS Roma vẫn lo tìm kiếm sự thay thế hữu hiệu, từ Khouma Babacar của Fiorentina đến Daniel Sturridge của Liverpool, dường như chẳng đâu vào đâu.

Thật sự dù có bán được Dzeko hay không, Giám đốc thể thao Monchi của AS Roma cũng không có thứ gì trong tay để hù người láng giềng của mình.

Phải chăng giờ là lúc Lazio nhìn lên phía trên, nơi Napoli và Juventus chỉ hơn mình 8 và 7 điểm cách biệt, một khoảng cách có thật sự xa? Đầu tiên là trận đấu khó khăn trên sân một AC Milan đang sa sút ở vòng đấu tới.

“Ciro” Blazevic và những ký ức về ĐT Croatia chất lính

Các cầu thủ Croatia giờ không còn ra sân với tinh thần chiến đấu của một người lính nữa, mà của một cầu thủ bóng đá đơn thuần.

Hồi lên 16, Miroslav "Ciro" Blazevic theo học để trở thành thầy tu nhờ sự định hướng của mẹ. Thế mà trong quãng thời gian tìm hiểu về sự khổ hạnh, "Ciro" trót đem lòng yêu một nữ tu để rồi nhận ra thứ tôn giáo khác đang chảy rần rật trong mạch máu, bám vào tâm tưởng: Bóng đá!

HLV Blazevic là người kiến trúc sư cho thành công của ĐT Croatia tại World Cup 1998.

Cho đến sau này, Blazevic vẫn ảnh hưởng lớn từ mẹ trong sự nghiệp huấn luyện khi được bà dạy cho bí quyết ngăn những cá nhân xung đột với nhau. Công thức rất đơn giản: Nếu A nói xấu B, hãy đến với B và nói rằng A lúc nào cũng ca ngợi anh ta. Đó là chìa khóa giúp Blazevic được gọi là "huấn luyện viên của những huấn luyện viên" tại Croatia.

Ông tiết lộ rằng để Boksic "vô tình" nghe được cuộc hội thoại rằng Suker cảm thấy buồn bực vì không thể ghi bàn khi thiếu đi sự trợ giúp của các tiền đạo khác. Thực tế thì Suker chẳng bao giờ nói bất cứ điều gì thuộc loại này nhưng Blazevic không quan tâm. Ông cho rằng nói dối mà làm mọi chuyện tốt đẹp còn hơn là nói thật để mọi thứ rối tung lên., cũng nhờ thế mà ngăn chặn được sự ghen tị giữa Suker và Boksic.

Năm 1998 khi Croatia đặt chân đến Pháp, người xứ lục lăng dành những cái bĩu môi cho Blazevic. Hồi năm 1995 khi còn dẫn dắt Nantes, "Ciro" từng bị tống giam vì liên quan đến những bê bối với Marseilles. Dù được thả mà không bị truy tố, danh tiếng của Blazevic bị hủy hoại hoàn toàn trên đất Pháp để rồi cũng chính nơi đây đưa tên tuổi của ông bay cao.

Miroslav Blazevic hứng thú với thuốc lá, socola, dưa hấu và đặc biệt là chiêm tinh. Chỉ 5 giờ trước trận bán kết với người Đức tại World Cup 1998, Blazevic nhận bản fax dài 2 trang từ nhà chiêm tinh riêng của ông tại Zagreb. Mân mê ly rượu tại thủ phủ của dòng vang Beaujolais, "Ciro" nghe trợ lý truyền thông Darko Tironi thuật lại bản fax.

Những con người sẵn sàng đứng lên và ngã xuống vì nền độc lập giờ đặt chân lên thảm cỏ với tính kỷ luật của người lính, sự lạnh lùng được hun đúc trên chiến trường và cả niềm kiêu hãnh của một quốc gia non trẻ vừa giành độc lập.

ĐT Croatia cần chất lính để vượt qua Hy Lạp tại loạt play-off World Cup 2018.

Cựu hậu vệ Slaven Bilic từng mơ ước trở thành luật sư nhưng vứt bỏ để theo tiếng gọi dân tộc: "Trước kia, chúng tôi bước ra khỏi cuộc chiến và gã nào cũng giống như một người lính khi đứng trên sân, thực hiện sứ mệnh cho đất nước được thừa nhận. Chúng tôi vẫn làm điều đó nhưng ơn Chúa, giờ thì Croatia không còn là quốc gia thời chiến nữa. Những áp lực được cởi bỏ nên bóng đá cũng trở về thuần túy hơn".

Kể từ sau cột mốc 1998, đội tuyển Croatia còn tham dự ba kỳ World Cup cùng bốn kỳ Euro khác nữa nhưng chưa một lần gây tiếng vang lớn đến thế. Như Slaven Bilic chia sẻ, các cầu thủ Croatia giờ không còn ra sân với tinh thần chiến đấu của một người lính nữa, mà của một cầu thủ bóng đá đơn thuần. Giờ thì "Vatreni" phải giành suất dự World Cup 2018 bằng suất play-off khi chạm trán Hy Lạp với hy vọng tìm lại ánh hào quang của thế hệ đi trước trên đất Nga mùa hè sang năm.

Neodoljivo zvuči trener svih trenera, kao da mu je 30 godina, a ne da duboko gazi devetu deceniju života. Legendarni Travničanin Miroslav Ćiro Blažević, taj šarmantni starac (83), još pršti od energije.. Sine moj, život je postao prekratak. Sve je kraći i kraći. Ostavio sam nogomet definitivno. Moglo je dosta toga biti drugačije, ali, Bože moj, valja proživjeti još ovo malo što je ostalo – kazao je Blažević i zamolio da priču prebacimo na nogomet, o kojem on zna bukvalno sve. Blažević je, inače, kao selektor nogometne reprezentacije Bosne i Hercegovine 2009. godine u kvalifikacijama za Svjetsko prvenstvo za tri dana u dva navrata pobijedio selekciju Belgije. Stoga, ako iko zna kako pobijediti Belgijance, s kojima se 7. oktobra sastajemo na Grbavici, onda je to upravo Ćiro. – Ja da znam kako pobijediti Belgiju, bio bih najbogatiji čovjek na svijetu. Međutim, smatram da ima nekoliko finesa na kojima bi Mehmed Baždarević mogao raditi kako bi ih pobijedili – kazao je Blažević. Očekuje Ćiro pravu borbu na Grbavici. – Strategija je vrlo važna. Bit će to viteška borba. Meša će morati pregledati desetine njihovih utakmica, mora paziti na svaki detalj, ranjivi su Belgijanci sigurno, a na Meši je da pronađe njihove slabosti – rekao je Ćiro. Može li olakšavajuća okolnost biti činjenica da su Belgijanci osigurali plasman na Mundijal? – To može biti izuzetno opasno. Najopasnije su ekipe koje igraju rasterećeno. Belgijanci nemaju šta izgubiti, a mi gubimo sve. Dolazi nam ekipa koja nema ama baš nikakve ambicije, ali ne smijemo praviti iluzije kako će to biti lagan meč – rekao je Blažević. Izdati naredbe Potom se Ćiro prisjetio 2009. godine, kada je u dva navrata savladao Belgiju. – Kakve su meni bile šanse da u tri dana dva puta savladam Belgiju? Ali ko te pitao, morao sam dobiti. Ja sam tada svoje igrače uvjerio da su bolji od Belgijanaca i to su dokazali. To savjetujem i Baždareviću. Mora biti poput generala, treba im izdati naredbe, biti drčan i ako treba, izderat se na igrače – rekao je Blažević. 2018 World Cup: What the last friendlies taught us about contenders

The last time Brazil faced Germany before Tuesday was in Belo Horizonte in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup. The home team’s starlet, Neymar, was missing due to an injury and the game ended in a 7-1 win for Germany—Brazil’s worst ever defeat.

This week, the game was in Berlin and once more there was no Neymar. Brazil again scored once but they managed to keep the home side scoreless on way to a 1-0 win.

Much has changed since the last World Cup, and one of the definitive transformations have been in Brazil’s fortunes. The team under manager Adenor Leonardo Bacchi, better known as Tite, is stacked with talent in all areas of the pitch, so much so that they can not only cope with the absence of Neymar but also thrive.

An ageing Julio Cesar was the best ‘keeper Brazil could manage in goal in 2014. Now, Tite had to drop one of the best custodians in the Premier League, Ederson Moraes, in favour of Roma’s number 1 Alisson Becker.

Fred became one of the scapegoats of that Belo Horizonte massacre never to play for Brazil again. But in Berlin, Tite could trust Gabriel Jesus—the game’s only goalscorer—and have the luxury of starting Roberto Firmino on the bench.

Brazil now seem well-equipped to bury the ghost of 2014 and make a serious dent in their quest for a sixth World Cup in Russia this summer.

As the South Americans overcame their trauma of the past, their arch-rivals Argentina were left contemplating their own. Lionel Messi couldn’t take any more of the mauling his team were receiving at the hands of Spain in Madrid and as the sixth goal in the 6-1 defeat went in, he made a move away inside the bowels of the stadium, having seen the game from the stands.

Argentine manager Jorge Sampaoli has the difficult task of sorting out his chaotic defence that played like amateurs at times. Willy Caballero, 36, will definitely not cut it as reserve ‘keeper and Javier Mascherano is unlikely to get the kind of rigour that would prepare him for a World Cup assignment in the Chinese league. In his Argentine record 141st cap, the former Barcelona man looked a shadow of his former self.

Reports suggest that Ezequiel Garay is not keen on call-ups for the national team but on the evidence of Tuesday, Sampaoli will need to convince the Valencia defender to accept the call for Russia.

For all the shellacking, Argentina started well and moved the ball decisively, attempting to play a passing game. Had it not been for an inexplicable miss from Gonzalo Higuain, La Albiceleste would have taken an early lead with a beautiful flowing move that started all the way at the back.

It leaves the question of whether Higuain is worth trusting with another important assignment. The script of the 2014 World Cup as well as the last two Copa Americas could have been vastly different had Higuain shown the same finishing capabilities that he does at the club level for Juventus. But his potency seems to desert him whenever he puts on an Argentine shirt.

Sergio Aguero was injured and Diego Perotti remained an unused substitute. But Sampaoli needs to give a serious thought about taking Mauro Icardi and Juventus’ starlet Paulo Dybala to Russia, having dropped the two for the twin friendlies.

Argentina are running short of time to fix their side in time for June.

Spain, on the other hand, look in great shape and are the favourites to add to the title they won in 2010. Manager Julen Lopetegui is blessed with a hugely talented squad that is stacked in all areas of the pitch.

Tuesday’s demolition job was completed without David Silva, Javi Martinez, and Sergio Busquets. There were combined 90 minutes for Andres Iniesta and Saul Niguez, while one of the best defenders in the Premier League, Cesar Azpilicueta, had to contend with a cameo.

The core of the side is well-experienced and the gifted youngsters make Spain a potent force and the team to beat this summer.

One team that would relish the challenge are the reigning world champions Germany. The two teams played out a 1-1 draw in their friendly last week, displaying how evenly they are matched.

There are some similarities between the two sides as well. Germany has plenty of experience in Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, and Mesut Ozil, and some outstanding youngsters in Leroy Sane, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka et al. Although none of these players, Sandro Wagner, Timo Werner and Mario Gomez, give the same potency as a Miroslav Klose of yesteryears.

Belgium, too, have rich pickings in all areas of the pitch but doubts remain about manager Roberto Martinez’s ability to come up with tactics that gets the best out of the talent at his disposal. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne openly criticised Martinez’s tactics during the November international break. It’s never a good sign when the team’s best payer doesn’t profess full faith in the manager.

The Red Devils do have shortcomings in wide defensive areas and the deployment of Yannick Ferreira Carrasco as left wing-back left them exposed whenever Saudi Arabia attacked that area on Tuesday.

Belgium secured a 4-0 win over the Saudis, but better teams will punish them. They have the squad to challenge for the World Cup but a lack of tournament-winning experience and managerial tactical nous may prove their undoing.

Belgium’s group opponents England also have similar concerns with Gareth Southgate at the helm. The England manager opted for a three-man defence in both the friendlies and employed Kyle Walker as the right-sided centre-back. It stifles the best qualities of the Manchester City defender, who thrives on bombing forward and delivering crosses.

A 1-0 win on Saturday over the Netherlands, who have failed to qualify for the World Cup, was relatively easily secured. But Italy would have won on Tuesday by a handsome margin had Ciro Immobile taken his chances—the 1-1 result flatters England.

The arrival of Harry Kane will shore up the Three Lions’ attack and they do have a serviceable midfield but that defence doesn’t look like it could bring the World Cup back to ‘the home of football’.

The match between reigning European champions Portugal and Egypt was billed as a Cristiano Ronaldo versus Mohamed Salah showdown. The latter seemed to be winning the battle with his 56th minute goal but the Real Madrid star had the last laugh with two headers in the injury time that settled the match in Portugal’s favour.

But Portugal had a calamitous first half against the Netherlands, going three goals down before the referee blew for half-time and eventually lost 0-3.

Portugal’s Euro win in 2016 was down to a collective effort and manager Fernando Santos will do well to rally his troops—especially with important players, including Andre Gomes, Andre Silva and Renato Sanches struggling at their respective clubs—if they are to add the World Cup to their Euro win.

France remain hit and miss. They let slip a 2-0 advantage against Colombia at home to lose 3-2 last weekend before beating a ramshackle Russia 3-1 away on Tuesday.

Didier Deschamps has one of the best squads in world football at his disposal. It’s up to him to find the balance. Paul Pogba has been struggling for consistency at Manchester United but Deschamps seems to trust the midfielder more than the United manager, Jose Mourinho.

The French team are well-equipped in attack with Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, while the centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Samuel Umtiti—who despite making a rare mistake that gave away a penalty against Colombia—will be hard to get past. It’s the midfield where Deschamps need to get the right balance with a plethora of exciting options to choose from.

France’s game against Russia in Saint-Petersburg ended with reports of alleged racist chanting from the stands which football’s governing body FIFA is investigating. Russia has a history of such nasty stuff in its local competitions as well as European club championships and there were fears that such unsavoury incidents will tarnish the World Cup as well.

Football fans would hope Tuesday’s incidents are just a blip and those fears are not realised on world football’s biggest stage come summer.
