Pibby x Blossom. Why Ship It?

(AKA - In Defense of Pibby x Blossom) [Reposted from my Deviantart, a product of the Pibby x Blossom Collab] Some people question why Pibby x Blossom is even a ship in the first place. Many odd pairings have spawned from the Powerpuff Girls fandom. 

From the PPG x RRB, to Blossom x Dexter, Buttercup x Johnny Test, or even, controversially, Blossom x Aku.

Shipping is a natural part of fandom. Especially to fandoms with young members, often wanting to see characters they love in secured relationships or emulating the relationships they wish to have. 

 So that begs the question, what makes Pibby x Blossom any different from ships like Blossom x Dexter or Blossom x Any Member of the Rowdyruff Boys? Is it a Crack Ship, or is there more to it than what we see at face value? 

Lets look at some factors, getting some common detractor ideas out of the way first.

The "Age" debacle.

Some people have argued against Blossom x Pibby because of the two being children. Which is baffling. Most know that shipping is not inherently sexual and sometimes not even entirely romantic! If the greater internet wasn't allowed to ship children characters, then a large number of ships would disappear overnight. There'd be no more Sonic x Sally or Sonic x Amy. Since they're teenagers. You couldn't ship Ash with Misty, Serena, or any other female companion from Pokemon since they're kids. You couldn't ship Luz with Amity, because even though they're canon in the show, they're both still children. None of the students from My Hero Academia could be shipped. Absolutely no PPG x RRB or Blossom x Dexter, etc. You see what I'm getting at?

Children get crushes on each other. Teenagers get crushes on each other. Children and Teenagers love talking about crushes and imagining their favorite characters having crushes!  It's been around for ages and it's harmless!

The other half is people arguing since Pibby's age is "unknown" it could be dangerous to ship her with Blossom. This one carries more weight. As Pibby being a teenager or adult would throw the pairing into a gross territory since Blossom is in Kindergarten.

However, I would argue that we have official evidence to show that Pibby IS around Blossom's Age. That she's intentionally written to be child-coded, and I'll show it here.

From the leaked voice call sheet, Pibby immediately is drawn to comparison to Dora the Explorer. A character who is canonically 8 years old. The document further lists Pibby as "wanting to stay child-like forever," which like many cartoon shows, even the powerpuff girls, those characters never seem to age.

If we go off the Dora angle, Pibby is 8 years old and only two years older than Blossom who is most likely 5 given that she's in Kindergarten. If we go off the Preschool show angle, Pibby is 4 or 5 which makes her and Blossom near the exact same age.

The Powerpuff Girls have been shown to get crushes even in the classic series, such as Buttercup having a short-term crush on Ace. They use kissing to stop the Rowdyruff Boys when they first caused havoc. They kissed the cootie kid at the end of that episode! Despite their young age it's not out of the question to say the Girls could have crushes, and so could Pibby!

It's understandable why some people would feel sketchy shipping characters so young, and nobody is making them! However this age aspect shouldn't be policed when the characters are CLEARLY shown to be so close in age to each other. It's not an adult being shipped with a child, it's not a pair of siblings being shipped. It's a fictional girl child and another fictional girl child, and if this somehow changes when Pibby is released I'll delete this post.

The "Gender" debacle.

I'm not going to beat around the bush. Some people are clearly not comfortable with the ship because Blossom and Pibby are both girls.

Why would it be that any ship that places Blossom with a boy (even some boys that are clearly too OLD for her) be okay, but a ship that places her with another girl her age be taboo? It's 2022 and we need to stop pretending that girls can't get crushes on girls, or boys can't get crushes on boys. Children DO know at that age who they like, and it's often adults telling them to think otherwise that leads to years of questioning and confusion.

Letting people ship same gendered couples doesn't hurt you, and pushing against it makes you look bad.

What Do Pibby and Blossom Have in Common?

Now let's get into the real discussion itself. Would Pibby and Blossom have any chemistry?

Liang, who the collab was created for, recently told me her original reasoning for shipping Pibby and Blossom so I'll quote it here.

"Also, you wanna know why I ship Pibby with Blossom? Well it kinda sound silly but it’s because they both love anything that’s about learning and they kinda have similar looks. So I think they’re actually perfect together in my headcanon."

This was a very interesting insight because I would say, yes! They both love learning. Blossom is a very intelligent and academic character, and Pibby was created to teach kids about spelling.

A connection could be immediately made through that love of education. I'm sure Pibby would be impressed by Blossom's knowledge as well as her fluency in the Chinese language. Meanwhile Blossom would love to understand how Pibby can make words appear when she speaks and her thoughts on being an educator.

Plus they do look pretty similar, a lot of fanart has often depicted Pibby as a powerpuff girl for that reason, funnily enough.

However I want to throw in my own addition to the chemistry pile. Pibby and Blossom are both Leaders.

Pibby was the star of her show. Blossom is the canonical leader of the Powerpuff Girls. Pibby often reassures and tries to help others during times of need as does Blossom. Pibby takes charge and leads others into battle, and Blossom picks up the torch and beats down baddies when her other sisters no longer can. Blossom is the one who often comes up with plans, and Pibby is the one who manages to pull Melira and Alloy Boy together and convinces them that they can all learn to become heroes. The two have a very similar determination and resolve that I think both could benefit from. An avenue I feel a lot of people may have overlooked.

Pibby still needs to come into her own as a hero, while Blossom had already done that in the events of the Powerpuff Girls movie. So Pibby can absolutely learn from Blossom, plus maybe comfort her after Bubbles is taken by the darkness (We never see Blossom get taken by it in the trailer so we don't know if she's still around or not)

There's a lot of good things we could see from this pairing if more content creators choose to apply it and explore avenues with their characters.

In Conclusion

I've seen many people write off Pibby x Blossom as a Crack Ship, and while I see where they're coming from... I don't think that's the case at all. Like Blossom x Dexter, there's some foundation there. They're both from the same programming network. They're very similar in character. They both have loves of learning and are leaders. There's a lot more to this ship than just throwing two random characters together. There's no real difference between Pibby x Blossom and a lot of the other popular Blossom ships. It's putting two characters together in a fun way.

In the end, who cares if someone ships them together? It's HARMLESS.

You don't have to ship it, you don't even have to like it. You can hate it! But if you have a problem with it, but can't add anything critical or thoughtful to the conversation, then you're better off moving on or just blocking the people and content you don't want to see. It's easy, costs nothing, and filters your content the way you would like it. Harassment and bullying is never okay, and even if it's the internet it should not be tolerated.

If it's harmless, let people have fun, and have your own fun where it appeals to you.

To be honest, I could bring myself to get with the times and add an 'Affiliated with' and 'Mains' section on Vivian's Pinned Post like all the youngins on here, but I'm cursed with the affliction of threads on this blog rarely extending past two notes due to the fact I have abysmal luck when it comes to pulling roleplay partners that won't vanish/deactivate on me, so realistically speaking, @illholy, @spiritpyro, and @dis--parity would be the only ones I could say I'm affiliated with... while my mains would probably be a constant '???', just because I'm uncertain on who even considers me a main at this point.

I mean, I'm fine with not being considered an affiliate in return, especially since Judith is permanently a part of Vivian's default canon verse for example regardless, but mains wise, I don't wanna assume stuff or be presumptuous... so for the longest time, I opt not to update my Pinned Post. Like, perhaps one day, Vivian would end up being important to more muses, but she tends to not receive much engagement compared to other blogs, I'm unconsciously all, 'God, who even wants this trash girl as their main?'.

Granted, I know I should probably be more confident about my OC since I've been writing her for ages now; only... even after all the time, I still can't help being self-conscious about Vivian, since I get the sense I'm the black sheep of the RPC and I know her personality can be a lot.

Like I genuinely don't blame them for not making individual/a group statement (nor really any SK citizen who identifies as he/him and will do/are doing/just recently finished required military service) for their recent silence (they have like 10 years of making it clear + have a history of doing donations privately that get leaked) given the circumstances; especially after that one bitch pretended to be military medical staff & "vaccinated" Jin. Plus there's like 3+ decades of using SK celebrities being used as scapegoats by the SK government. There's socio-economic & political history around BTS & kpop as a whole that I don't expect locals and 70% of the international kpop community (who really only came about post Gangnam Style) to know because of the SK media propaganda + twitters downfall destroying access to 2 decades of it

Then you gotta remember BTS are a special case because they were invited to the White House to meet genocidal Joe & are still very much hated by the English speaking music industry- whatever they say can cost people across the industry their mf jobs; they, their lawyers, staff, and BH need to be all together & not under mandatory government surveillance to say something at the end of the day- and that's gonna take a while. This isn't a 1:1 situation of untouchable US citizens like Beyoncé, Rihanna, & Taylor Swift who can do stuff freely because of monetary protection & choose not too, SK plays by different rules.

The real question we should all should be asking is which SK celebrities/idols/infulencers have completed their requirements, have no ties to the SK government tourism division's money, and aren't in a unit who must wait for the rest to finish their requirements that are being silent? Those are the folks you should be actively not giving money nor supporting anymore.

Rainbow series headcanons: RED || Accepting !

@dynamoprotocol sent: 🧨 — a long fuse! a headcanon about my muse and their temper, and a time when they lost it. (for Summer)

Unlike what one could think, Summer isn't quick at losing her temper. She can get emotional, very easily too at times, but that mostly leads her to be said and hurt. This is because, when something manages to make it past her detached facade, it usually goes to poke at her many, deeply rooted insecurities.

If you get on her nerves, she usually resorts to sarcasm and well placed jabbed. She makes a point of knowing where to hit, so that he can do it hard whenever someone has the bad idea of antagonising her or trying to attack her.

Her ruthlessness, however, isn't born out of anger. She gets annoyed, but it's always short-lived. The real reason behind her choice of tactic is that she has learnt that it's the quickest way to get the other person out of her hair. Most of the times, all she wants is to go back to her phone and to ignore the world around her, so she can mind her own business in pieces.

Her indifference, of course, is as much of a coping mechanism as Morty's anger issues are. At a first glance, it might seem that her way to deal with the shit her family has put her through is somewhat healthier than her brothers, but deep down they are not. Morty might be more destructive, but Summer bottles everything up, which just hurt her more and more.

And then, at times, it all gets too much and she explodes when certain buttons are pressed.

Having grown up as the reason why her parents are stuck into a shitty marriage, getting the bare minimum of love from them out of the fact that she is their favourite and their first choice compared to Morty, the one thing that truly sets her off is people giving shit to or hurting the few who are nice to her and who show that they truly care for her, unconditionally.

That's why she picked the Devil, literally, over Rick that one time and kicked her grandfather, the man she's always trying to impress, out of the shop. Mr. Needful was "nice to her", while Rick always ignores her in favour of Morty.

Speaking of Morty, one of the occasions when Summer lost her temper the most it was for her brother. The two of them don't always have the best relationship and, since they are both bad at communicating, they run into plenty of misunderstanding. Not to mention that they never shy away from berate and attack each other, especially when they are competing for Rick's attention.

However, with the passing of time, Summer has started to notice just how much Morty does to protect the rest of the family from the ugliest aspects that come with having Rick in their lives. Not just the tangible dangers, but also the emotional hurt. He shoulders most of it, quietly and discreetly, so that their parents and, especially, Summer herself won't have to.

While the girl never openly told Morty that she has noticed, she tries to return the favour, from time to time, by protecting and siding with him too.

That particular fight started as nothing new. Apparently, at least according to Rick, Morty had messed up on their latest adventure because he had gotten "distracted by a skirt". The boy had tried to argue that it hadn't been the case, that he had just being trying to help the alien girl out of a very sticky situation, but of course no one had believed it. Summer herself, at first, had just snorted, because it had sounded like very much typical Morty, but at one point she had looked up from her phone and saw the expression on her brother's face.

There had been no embarrassment on it, as she would have expected, nor he had been flustered. On the contrary, he had looked exhausted, bitterly resigned, frustrated and broken.

Summer had instantly grasped what everyone else was missing even if it was staring at them right in the face. Not only Morty was telling the truth, but they were all digging their fingers in a painful, ever gaping wound. All those comments about how he could never get someone to like him, how girls kept their distance because he came off as a horny little pervert, how he could never say the right thing without sounding like a creep. They were too busy laughing at him to realise what they were truly saying to him.

No one will ever want you. No one will ever like you. You're unlovable.

That had been the point where she had snapped. She had stuffed her phone in her pocket and jumped on her feet, green eyes hot with fury. She had yelled at their parents about how they had no right to judge because the truth was that they clung to each other and their poor ass marriage because no one else would ever stand to have a long lasting relationship with them. That they always ended up picking their shared misery because it was the best they could have.

As for Rick? Oh, she had had plenty to say about him too and she had told him as much. However, she had stuck to telling him how he should feel blessed that Morty gave him so much of his time and energy, because without him Rick would be just a lonely, sad, pathetic drunk. That said it all in her eyes.

Once she had been done, she had grabbed a stunned Morty by the arm and had dragged him up to her room. They hadn't talked about what had just happened. Summer had rolled up a joint and they had shared it in silence, before moving to play videogames.

Yet, she had known that she had been seen and heard when, the next day, Morty had come home with a beautiful bracelet for her, trying to shrug it off as nothing big, even if it was the kind of stuff that would get her the right attention from the popular kids.

Probably a stupid take but I always thought it was quantity/quality of blood you’d taken during your life that shaped what type of monster you became. Amelia definitely had access to high quality and volumes of blood so that might have been why her transformation was so sudden and why she was so unique looking. The same with the Cleric Beast (cleric can refer to a general church member BUT the boss placement etc definitely suggests IMO this was a high ranking person), Ludwig and Laurence. Typical Yharnamites seem to hit the Scourge Beast stage with a gradual transformation (ignoring the Abhorrent beasts idk what’s up a them).

As a little aside I like to think that Ludwig transformed abruptly (like Vicar Amelia) with no warning whatsoever and absolutely massacred everyone in his reach :)
