Just when I thought I had finished rumaging through the second hand shop's odd record boxes and was ready to leave last Sunday, the owner pulled down a small box from an out-of-reach shelf, saying "You almost forgot this one. Though you probably won't be interested in anything in there." I laughed and said he would be surprised - but it was I that ended up being most surprised, for in that little box lay none other than a Joan Baez single, among many others (of which I took home three, including this one).

I already have There But For Fortune on my 5 record, but hadn't heard of the B-side before; it was originally from 1961, called Plaisir D'Amour. This morning I took the liberty of spinning it while I got ready; I ended up playing it many more times after. The fact that Joan was only about twenty when it was released struck a fine chord in me - the barefoot madonna, no older than I am now, playing the guitar so softly and singing so sweetly. It was probably one of the most moving experiences I've ever had listening to a record.

The disc itself is in surprisingly good condition, considering that its original Fontana-branded paper sleeve is torn asunder (and shall be fixed, in due time). There are no scratches on either side and it looks to have been very well-taken care of by its previous owner!

Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love 1961

Blue Hawaii is the fourth soundtrack album by the American singer Elvis Presley, belonging to the 1961 film of the same name starring Presley. In the US, the album spent 20 weeks at the number one slot and 39 weeks in the Top 10 on Billboard's Top Pop LPs chart.

The songs "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Rock-A-Hula Baby" were pulled off the album for two sides of a single. The A-side "Can't Help Falling in Love," which became the standard closer for a Presley concert in the 1970s, went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it topped the British charts in 1962, spending four weeks at number 1.

The melody to "Can't Help Falling in Love" is based on "Plaisir d'amour", a popular French love song composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini. The song was initially written from the perspective of a woman as "Can't Help Falling in Love with Him", which explains the first and third line ending on "in" and "sin" rather than words rhyming with "you".

The song has been recorded by many other artists, including the British reggae group UB40, whose 1993 version topped the US and UK charts.

"Can't Help Falling in Love" received a total of 84,5% yes votes!
