The new trilogy means we finally got official French translations of the fifth and sixth games (the fourth already had one) so I did my thing and played through them, since they're always a lot of fun. Here are some things about French Dual Destinies I thought you might like to know:

Yes, it's set in France as per usual. They are all French people who live in Paris. And yes, that means that in this universe there is a Japanese village themed around yokai within throwing distance of Paris.

Athena lived in America in this version, and therefore peppers her speech with English and Spanish. My favourite unhinged franglais line was "let's get au travail" which I will be using from now on because it's hilarious

Many characters got French pun names again. Simon's name is "Jack Lamenoire" -- Jack, because the French version of Simon Says uses the name Jack/Jacques, and "lame noire" means "black blade". (Also he's not British or anything in this version, he just speaks in somewhat old-timey French.)

He has multiple nicknames for the judge that are all slight variations of "Your Baldness". He doesn't do that "-dono" suffix thing but he does refer to Phoenix in particular as "Maître Wright".

...I don't like pointing out things I didn't like buuuuuut his voice is a huge downgrade. Actually, to be honest, I don't like the new French voices that much in general... idk man they just don't sound very enthusiastic...

Filch's name is "Arsène Loupet", reference to the famous fictional thief Arsène Lupin, which I thought was pretty cool! (Herlock Sholmes was also a reference to that series too btw!)

Athena and Apollo use informal pronouns for each other pretty much from the get-go, but there have been some changes from the previous games: Phoenix now uses the informal "tu" for Apollo (and Athena) whereas in the prev game he didn't, Pearl now uses "tu" for Phoenix as well, and Klavier uses "tu" for Apollo now (but Apollo still calls him the formal "vous" lmao)

SPEAKING OF... SPEAKING OF. The French localisation continues to utterly baffle me when it comes to Klavier (or Konrad as he's called in French). No listen, liSTEN. In the previous game he was specifically stated to be English and did his law exams in England and dropped English words into his speech (and this is still the case in the trilogy version, I checked). But now?? They seem to have gone back on it and in this game he says he's German again, like the in English translation??? But he's still dropping English words into his speech randomly????? Look I already went through the five stages of grief when I found out they'd english-ified him, I made my peace with it, and NOW they change it???????

God and his new French voice sucks too (his old one was actually good)... what have they done to you my poor boy, was making you English not bad enough T_T Oh and he and Athena didn't even get their little language club moment where they both start speaking in the same foreign language?? Like, that just straight-up didn't happen here and I had been waiting for it aauuugh it's cool it's fine it's cool i'm okay i'm--

True to Dual Destinies fashion, there are still typos. In an emotional moment, Apollo took a leave of asbence from the office. Not absence. Asbence.

I can't put my finger on it but Robin's coming out scene felt more... respectful in French? The English translation was done over a decade ago so it feels somewhat dated, maybe that's why... I obviously don't know if she was purposely written to be a trans girl but she very much comes across that way, and it feels like the French translators were aware of that interpretation and took it into account, idk maybe it's just me

THEY GOT RID OF MY FAVOURITE LINE. THE FORESHADOWEY ONE WHERE SIMON TELLS ATHENA THAT THE PERSON SHE WANTS TO SAVE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD DOESN'T DESIRE HER DEFENCE, AND HE'S CLEARLY TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF. THE FRENCH MADE HIM SAY SOMETHING ELSE WAY LESS COOL. I don't wanna be like "FRENCH TURNABOUT ACADEMY IS DEAD TO ME" because most of it was awesome, but man these occasional things made me wanna flip tables

Cosmic Turnabout and Turnabout for Tomorrow were great in French though, so there's that. Clay's French name is "Pierre" which worked surprisingly well because it means stone or rock, and the moon rock was also called that, so like, the phantom had to kill Pierre in order to get the pierre... idk it worked and it was cool

Simon and Athena switch to using informal pronouns for each other very near the end of the game, in the scene where they work together to psychologically mess with the phantom. It's around the time when they start openly calling each other by first name since everyone knows now that they're old friends.

Phoenix and Edgeworth also occasionally refer to each other by first name in this game, which threw me off completely. (Reminder that Edgeworth's French name is "Benjamin Hunter". Just picture Phoenix standing in front of Edgeworth and calling him BENJAMIN. Now you understand how absolutely bizarre it felt.)

Chan had also been invited but since he was still getting over a small cold, he declined the offer playing it safe. "Yah, Jisung. Watch Felix's alcohol intake. The last thing I need is for him to wander off alone again." Jisung nodded and linked arms with his birthday twin before they all scrambled out of the door. Chan sighed heavily, while he was happy to finally have the dorm all to himself; he couldn't help but worry about his boys. "They'll be fine, they're adults. They can manage themselves without me." He attempted to calm himself with his own words but in reality, it just made him more worried. Shaking his head to rid himself of negative thoughts; Chan headed back to his bedroom thinking it might be nice to do an impromptu Channie's Room for Stay.

Entering his bedroom Chan realized that it was far too messy to actually go live and he really didn't feel like going to the company to go live either; it was cold outside and the last thing he needed was for his cold to get worse right before comeback season. He needed a distraction though; anything would do at this point, he just didn't want to become the over worried leader and start harrassing the members in their group chat while they were having fun. Flopping down onto his bed, he placed his arms behind his head and stared at the ceiling; it wasn't often that he had the whole dorm to himself so he really didn't know what to do. He could play video games without worrying about being too loud when he inevitably lost, or he could work on producing some new music without having to use his headphones, or he could watch a movie while on FaceTime with his sister Hannah.

Pulling out his phone, Chan decided to look through Twitter and see what Stays were up to; he clicked on the Stray Kids hashtag first and scrolled through all the edits that were recently posted. "Wow, these are really good. I wish I could reply to them all." he said out loud. He ended up saving a few of the edits to show the members later before clicking on his personal hashtag; his heart filling up with joy at all the sweet things Stays were saying about him. "Some day I'll get my own Twitter account and reply to you all my little Stays" clicking out of the app he hovered his thumb over his other apps wondering what to look at next; there was always TikTok but he really didn't find it all that interesting these days. As he pondered getting on Among Us or watching YouTube, he got a text from his sister and one of his best friends in Australia.

Baby Brat: Yah stupid! Have you ever read fanfiction about your group? Brady Boy: Hannah just found one about you and Minho that you should totally check out!

Chan rolled his eyes, sighing heavily and debating on even texting them back. He knew the fans wrote fanfiction about them; occasionally he would come across a link on Twitter to one and check it out, the fans really had a talent for writing. Some of the stories they came up with were just incredible; like the one he last read where Stray Kids were a pack of wolves, whoever the writer was really knew how to write a great story. Thinking about that story made him curious; he went back onto Twitter and searched up the hashtage Stray Kids fanfic, but to his dismay, there weren't any links for new stories. He wasn't too sure on where else one could find fanfiction either, he always just clicked on the links that Twitter had but never paid attention to the website that was pulled up.

Wolf Leader: I've read a few lol, found any good ones? Brady Boy: Not really, just a few that I found on Twitter but I assume you've already read those. Baby Brat: Just look on AO3 dummy *eye roll*

"AO3?" Chan asks out loud as if his sister could hear him from across the world. He opened up his phone's web browser to google and typed in 'AO3' the first link seeming like the right website but just to be sure he took a screen shot and sent it to his sister to confirm. Once she confirmed that the first link was indeed the website she was talking about; he clicked on it and registered himself. He made sure to use a pretty common user name so he could keep this a secret from fans and hopefully his members. Once he was finished, he clicked on the search button, thinking about what to actually search up; should he try just straight up Stray Kids or should he pick a specific ship? He honestly didn't know what ship he would even want to read about so he chose to just search Stray Kids. Approximately 47,000 stories popped up, each with their unique tags and story descriptions; "There's so many!" his eyes widening as he began to scroll down the first page, reading the brief descriptions of each before choosing one.

It was titled 'Loving the Devil' and was centered around himself and Lee Know. The tags didn't contain anything concerning (though it did mention smut) so he clicked on the title and began reading. The story was set in the idol universe so it was more realistic than being set in a school setting or something. The beginning of the story was pretty mild and scarily accurate; describing how stressed the members were during comeback season and Chan of course wishing he could help his boys relieve their stress somehow. "Look at me always caring for my boys, even in fake scenarios." he smiled as he continued reading the story.

About half way through the story, things really began to heat up; Chan got into a fight with Lee Know who ended up pushing him against a wall threatening to hit him. "Okay, Lee Know would never do that... at least not to me." his eyes becoming wide as he read further down the page realizing that instead of hitting him, Lee Know kissed him. A very detailed description of the two of them making out and stripping each other's clothes off made Chan's face heat up; partially from embarassment and partially out of lust. He unknowingly was being turned on reading a completely fake scenario that would never happen in real life about him and one of his members. He hadn't read that far into the smut scene when he had to put his phone down and take a deep breath; his heart was racing and his whole body was heated.

Didn't expect beating this one so soon, so time for another review!

Planet Laika

This is an obscure Japan only PS1 game, developed by Zeque and Quintet, and published by Enix in 1999. Zeque handled the scenario, graphics and design and Quintet handled the sound and more technical aspects.

I first heard about it a few years ago when RPGSite on Twitter mentioned it's anniversary, and I was intrigued by its premise. Sadly, there wasn't a fan translation back then, but I still looked forward to checking it out at some point. I was learning Japanese at the time so I thought, maybe someday I'll be proficient enough at the language to play the game.

Then last year, an English fan translation patch was released, however, due to being busy with life and playing other games, I didn't play Planet Laika until recently. And oh boy. This game is a fever dream.

This is an extremely experimental game, and its bizarre opening will play if you let the title screen idle for a bit. For the longest time the only experience I had with Planet Laika was that opening and I knew just from it that it would be trippy, but man I don't think that opening does the game justice. It's even WILDER than that opening lets on.

The premise of Planet Laika is that years ago, prior to the events of the game, mankind made contact with Martians, and as a part of a peace treaty between the two races, humans gave up their faces to Martians. When Martians wore these faces, they were exposed to the evil of humankind, killing them all off and leaving behind the essence of Martians' evil on the planet, called Evil Mind. Evil Mind resembles purple miasma, and when inhaled, it causes one to experience hallucinations and may even drive one mad. Also, humans apparently became dog furries upon giving up their faces.

The protagonist, a cosmonaut with a dissociative disorder, is sent on a mission with three others to Mars to investigate the disappearance of another cosmonaut who left behind an extremely cryptic message. Upon arriving on the planet, strange events start to occur immediately, and the planet brings the past of some towards the light.

Planet Laika is specified as a role playing game, but to be honest, it's more of an adventure game/walking simulator/visual novel with very light role playing elements. There's no party to manage, no experience points (though the health bar expands as you beat specific bosses), few battles and no complicated systems. The gameplay consists of mostly running around and interacting with NPCs and objects in the world to find clues to progress, while also absorbing "evil" to shift between the protag's alters to solve puzzles. It was actually nice to play after playing games with complex systems (coughs Xenoblade 3, I need to go back to beat it) and just lean back and take in the story. As I already mentioned, this game does have battles, and like the rest of the game, the battle system is experimental. Most compare the battle system to some kind of a ping pong, but it's a bit different. In battles, an alter will be on the left side and the enemy on the right. You control an orb called a mind core, which automatically flies up and down. Pressing circle repeatedly will slowly move the orb towards the enemy, while pressing cross will bring it back to the start line. The objective of battles in Planet Laika is bouncing back projectiles fired by the enemy to not just defend each alter, but to defeat the enemy. Sometimes it will fire special projectiles that either restore your health (green) or bounce back all damaging projectiles (red/orange). These battles are my least fav aspect of the game but I did come to enjoy them towards the end, and they're few and far between so they're not too invasive.

Planet Laika is a very atmospheric psychological horror. It's unpredictable and I could never tell where the story was going. At the same time, it's also rather cryptic and can get confusing. I kept playing because I really wanted to know what would happen next, but I have to admit, I didn't always understand what was going on and I actually may just replay the game down the line to understand it better, knowing what happens. Fortunately it isn't long, my first playthrough was around 12 hours or so.

This is one of those games where the limitations of technology at the time actually add to the surreal and uncanny feel. It utilizes prerendered backgrounds with 3D models a la PS1 Final Fantasy. I love these visuals and I think remaking the game in any way would undermine everything. Sadly, there aren't many prerendered backgrounds and there's quite a bit of backtracking and wandering back and forth between areas you've already visited. It's clearly a sign of low budget, but I think the game does a lot with what it got.

The soundtrack is rather avant garde. It's memorable, with one of the boss battles being one of the themes that stuck out to me. There are also some genuinely terrifying tracks at times along with creepy sound design, and that combined with creepy imagery at times actually made me feel uncomfortable and sometimes even straight up terrified! There's a single jumpscare in this game and even knowing it was the only jumpscare, I still felt like there was going to be another one at times.

Unfortunately, this game isn't without its problems. While for a late 90s game with its themes of childhood trauma and abuse, PTSD, DID/OSDD and so on, it does try to tackle these themes with as much respect as it can, but also fumbles at times. There's also a very stereotypical depiction of native American imagery. If you want to play this game, I highly recommend reading the readme that comes with the English fan translation in the link I put at the very beginning of this post. Also, the game being cryptic may be both a plus and a minus. If you're the kind of person who loves diving into cryptic pieces of media looking for clues and details and piecing everything together, possibly needing to engage with the media on multiple occasions, you may love this game. If you don't, this is not the game for you, although a playthrough just for the atmosphere and visuals alone may be worth it.

I'm glad I finally took the time to play this game despite its shortcomings and not understanding everything that was going on. The surreal visuals and the game being sometimes straight up unhinged was great. I love experimental stuff like this and I really want to play more. And as already mentioned, I'll definitely replay this game at some point.
