Uma Thurman cumple 54 años

Uma Karuna Thurman (Boston, Massachusetts, 29 de abril de 1970) es una actriz de cine y exmodelo estadounidense nominada al Óscar y ganadora del Globo de Oro. Comenzó como modelo profesional y acabó dedicándose al cine en 1988

Hija del profesor budista de la Universidad de Columbia, Robert Thurman, y de Nena von Schlebrügge (exmodelo nacida en México, de padre alemán y madre sueca-danesa).

Entre sus películas más conocidas están "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988) o "Gattaca" (1997). Aunque sin duda es mundialmente conocida por sus trabajos en "Pulp Fiction" (1994) y "Kill Bill" (2003-2004), ambas dirigidas por Quentin Tarantino.

Fue una joven desmañada e introvertida que era frecuentemente molestada por su elevada estatura, su nombre raro (a veces usaba el nombre Uma Karen en lugar del verdadero Uma Karuna), y la talla de sus pies.

A los 10 años, una amiga de su madre sugirió hacerle una rinoplastia, sugerencia que la mortificó durante años. Fue sin duda uno de los muchos incidentes que la llevaron a sufrir dismorfobia, un desorden mental que implica una imagen distorsionada del cuerpo

Su debut cinematográfico fue en "Johnny Be Good" (1987) y en "Kiss Daddy Goodnight" (1987), ambas con éxito marginal. Su siguiente película fue "Las aventuras del barón Munchausen" (1988), dirigida por Terry Gilliam y que si bien ahora es casi un filme de culto, en su momento fue un fracaso comercial

En 1998 protagonizó, con el que sería luego su esposo Ethan Hawke, la película de ciencia ficción "Gattaca". Aunque "Gattaca" no fue un gran éxito de taquilla, recibió muchas críticas positivas y consiguió gran recaudación en el mercado del vídeo.

Los dos grandes fracasos de su carrera llegaron en 1997 y 1998. Primero interpretó a la villana Hiedra Venenosa (Poison Ivy) en "Batman y Robin", la cuarta película de la popular saga. Batman y Robin resultó un gran fracaso de taquilla 

Su segundo revés fue al año siguiente en "Los vengadores", otro gran fracaso de público y crítica. 

Después del nacimiento de su primera hija en 1998, tomó un descanso de papeles principales para concentrarse en la maternidad.

Después de cinco años alejada de papeles principales, reapareció el 7 de enero de 2003 en el filme de John Woo "Paycheck", y en su nueva colaboración con Quentin Tarantino, "Kill Bill". 

"Paycheck" fue discreta con los críticos y la taquilla, pero "Kill Bill" relanzaría su carrera.

La producción fue postergada varios meses debido a que quedó encinta.

La filmación tomó nueve meses y fue hecha en cinco países diferentes. Este papel fue el más exigente para ella hasta ese momento, ya que pasó tres meses aprendiendo artes marciales, manejo de la espada e idioma japonés.

Con una exitosa carrera en el cine, volvió a convertirse en una solicitada modelo. La compañía de cosméticos Lancôme la escogió como la imagen de sus productos. En 2005, fue contratada para una función similar por la casa de modas francesa Louis Vuitton. 

Ese mismo año estrenó la comedia "Mi súper ex novia", por la que cobró la cifra de 14 millones de dólares

Mientras vivía en Londres tras rodar "Las amistades peligrosas" empezó a salir con el director Phil Joanou, quien acababa de producir el aclamado filme documental Rattle and Hum del grupo U2.

Mientras visitaba a Joanou en el set de su película, "State Of Grace", conoció al actor británico Gary Oldman. Los dos congeniaron enseguida. Incluso Joanou dijo después que era obvio que Oldman y Thurman estaban hechos el uno para el otro, de manera que se hizo a un lado. La pareja se casó en 1990, pero el matrimonio sólo duró dos años; según se informó, afectado por el poco tiempo que pasaban juntos a causa de sus apretadas agendas como actores.

El 1 de mayo de 1998, se casó con el actor Ethan Hawke, después de haberlo conocido en el set de "Gattaca". Antes del compromiso, él le había propuesto matrimonio dos veces sin ser aceptado. Ella reconoció que apuraron su matrimonio debido a que había quedado embarazada. En el momento de la boda llevaba siete meses de gestación.​

Tuvieron dos hijos: una niña, Maya Ray (8 de julio de 1998) y un niño, Levon Roan (15 de enero de 2002). Hawke le dedicó su novela For Karuna.

En 2003 se separaron y en 2004 se divorciaron. Muchos medios de comunicación informaron que la causa del divorcio fue la infidelidad de Ethan Hawke con la modelo canadiense Jen Perzow, después de sospechar que ella lo engañaba con Tarantino.

Reside actualmente en Hyde Park (barrio de la ciudad de Nueva York). En 2004 empezó a salir con el hotelero neoyorquino André Balazs. Convivieron en un apartamento en el vecindario del SoHo, en Manhattan, cerca del Mercer Hotel, propiedad de Balazs.

En marzo de 2006, su encargado de relaciones públicas anunció que la pareja se había separado.​

Thurman estuvo comprometida con el financiero Arpad Busson desde 2011. Tienen una hija llamada Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson, apodada Luna (nacida el 15 de julio de 2012),​ pero al final no llegaron a casarse y se separaron en 2014

UNA THURMAN IN OLD GUARD 2???

Una excelente película puede perder muchos puntos sin una buena banda sonora. Y al revés,si el director ha tenido muy buen gusto eligiendo la música para su película,pero la historia que cuenta,no es muy buena,mal va. Cine y música. De eso va el post de hoy. De la importancia de escoger una buena banda sonora y lograr que la película ya de por sí buena,lo sea aún más. Estos son los primeros cinco ejemplos de ellos. Son mis favoritos. Al lío.

1. Forrest Gump (1994). Robert Zemeckis.

Ademas de regalarnos una película extraordinaria,donde nos divertíamos viendo las andanzas de Forrest Gump-espléndido Tom Hanks,uno de sus mejores trabajos-y nos emocionamos con la relación que mantenía con Jenny-magistralmente interpretada por Robin Wright-,Robert Zemeckis supo acompañar la película con una espléndida banda sonora.

Durante la película se puede oír a Fleetwood Mac y su «Go Your Own Way» mientras Forrest corre por el país. O el «Sweet Home Alabama» de Lynyrd Skynyrd. O que decir del «Hound Dog» de Elvis Presley,que un jovencito Forrest bailaba-y que según el,le copió su baile-.Aretha Franklin,Creedance Clearwater Revival,Beach Boys,Bob Dylan o The Mamas & The Papas también forman parte de una magistral banda sonora.

«Forrest Gump» es una película maravillosa,con un reparto excepcional y con una banda sonora que está a la altura del film.

2. Pulp Fiction (1994). Quentin Tarantino.

Tarantino es un director al que respeto mucho. No es que me vuelva loco y sea de mis directores favoritos,pero tiene trabajos muy interesantes. Lo que sí le valoro y muy bien,es su gusto a la hora de escoger la música para la bandas sonoras de sus películas.

«Pulp Fiction» es un buen ejemplo de ello. La historia de un asesino que recibe el encargo de su jefe de cuidar a su pareja,está muy bien acompañada por música. Durante la película suenan Dusty Springfield,Kool and The Gang,Urge Overkill,All Green o Dick Dale.

Y no,no me he olvidado. «Pulp Fiction» se recordará por el icónico baile que nos regalaron Uma Thurman y John Travolta al ritmo de Chuck Berry y su «You Never Can Tell». Magnífico.

3. Apocalypse Now (1979). Francis Ford Coppola.

No podía faltar en este post este clásico del cine bélico y una de las mejores películas del género. Martin Sheen era el protagonista de la película y recibía el encargo de localizar y eliminar a un coronel de su ejército,que se había vuelto loco.

La película se inicia con «The End» de los Doors. Toda una declaración de intenciones por parte del director. Y una de las mejores secuencias en la historia del cine,en la que un escuadrón de caballería aéreo norteamericano arrasa un poblado vietnamita,viene acompañada por «Ride of the Valkyries» de Richard Wagner. Luego también se puede oír y ver cómo bailan los muchachos que acompañan a Martin Sheen en su misión,el «Satisfaction» de los Stones-si una película los tiene en su BSO,ya cuenta con mi bendición-.

«Apocalypse Now» es una gran película,que nos dejó unas cuantas escenas icónicas,un gran reparto y muy bien acompañadas por la BSO.

4. Star Wars. Una Nueva Esperanza (1977). George Lucas.

El mejor ejemplo de la importancia de la banda sonora para el éxito o no de una película,es la saga de Star Wars. ¿Os imagináis que las películas empezaran de otra manera y no con su icónica introducción? ¿O que no sonara la marcha imperial?. Yo tampoco lo imagino,la verdad y seguramente el resultado hubiese sido distinto.

George Lucas le confío a John Williams la creación de la banda sonora de la saga y el resto ya es historia. Porque además de los personajes míticos que surgieron de la primera trilogía-Luke,Leia,Han Solo,Darth Vader,Joda,Obi Wan Kenobi,Chewbacca-y las historias sobre los Jedi y el lado oscuro de la fuerza,la banda sonora fue muy importante para realzarles aún más. Gracias John.

5. La Chaqueta Metálica (1987). Stanley Kubrick.

Otro clásico del cine bélico dentro de mis bandas sonoras favoritas-que suene «Paint It,Black» de los Stones tiene mucho que ver en la elección de la película-.

No,los constantes y abundantes insultos y humillaciones que el sargento Hartman-pronto escribiré sobre el-les dedica a los pobres muchachos que tuvieron la brillante idea de alistarse a los marines,no forman parte de la banda sonora de la película. Y si,por ejemplo,los mencionados Stones,Nancy Sinatra y el tema más conocido del film,«Surfin Bird» de los Trashmen.

Es curioso,otra película anti belicista-como «Senderos de Gloria»-que forma parte de las mejores del género bélico. Y bien acompañada por una buena BSO.
