Arkhamverse Sirens

The Arkham games were fun and well-developed storywise, but I cringed every time an overdesigned, underdressed woman came on the screen.

Even if I didn’t know what the male gaze was at 13, it felt upsetting seeing half-naked women flirting and fighting with fully-armored men.

My guy is coming into town tonight and is taking me to go see Birds of Prey (his first time, my third). He really has no idea what he is in for…which is hours and hours of me asking him his opinion on the film and every single character in it.

I can’t wait.

Warner Bros. really pulled out all the stops to promote their DC projects this week.

They changed the promotional title for Birds of Prey, released their Wonder Woman 84 EW cover, had images of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad “leak”, and told Matt Reeves to drop the camera test for The Batman…a film that will not be released for over a year.

I really hope it pays off.

It’s probably just me, but when most guys review Birds of Prey there is an apprehension.

They always have to be like:

“This movie is not THAT feminist, don’t worry.”

“It’s not as man-hating as the trailer suggested.”

Then, they go out of their way to praise Ewan McGregor’s performance and completely ignore every woman who isn’t Margot Robbie.

Like I know the film wasn’t perfect, but I would love some nuanced criticism.

Is it still too early to call Birds of Prey the best DC film since The Dark Knight? Maybe, but I’m gonna do it anyway.

Birds of Prey is the best DC film since The Dark Knight.

I’m sure I’m not the first person to point this out, but the relationship between Roman and Victor mirrors what Ayer showed us of Harley and Joker in Suicide Squad. A powerful, manipulative crime boss and the loyal psychopath who loves him and is willing to do anything to protect him. (I honestly wish they had just made their relationship explicit rather than have them be another set of queer-coded villains.)

Birds of Prey showed us that Harley is ultimately a good person and was able to move past her toxic relationship. Meanwhile, Zsasz and Sionis continue to bring out the worst in each other.
