@bledlose said: hyun su chews his words for a long while. they haven't spoken in nearly ten minutes; eun hyuk with his back to him, focused intently on the monitors. hyun su has been resting, with the quiet ache that never seem to want to go away. 'eun yu talks about you sometimes,'' he says, only just loud enough to be heard. 'she...'' she cares for you. she's afraid for you. there's so much she wants to say to you. where she had worked herself up, fussing with her hair as she paced. hyun su watches eun hyuk like he watched her. 'she thinks you baby her sometimes. she thinks you blame yourself.''
a sigh through his nose. nothing has moved on his screens for over an hour, save for the restless flittering of hye in from room to room, undoubtedly looking for her dog again. on another, mr. kim and mr. han sit with the kids playing nearby. the calm threatens to lull him into sleep. and if there was any other sound besides the faint buzz of the cameras, hyun su’s comment might have gone unheard. eun hyuk’s eyes are tired, swivel in the direction of quiet voice. ❝ … those are two very different things, ❞ he comments, lightly.
he still hasn’t turned away from the security screens, his gaze falling back to a stack of paper — a meticulously reworked sketch of green home’s floorplan, with neat labels in the margins. the basement isn’t safe. neither is the parking garage. there was nothing left on floor 3, hyun su had said, and eun hyuk drew a red ‘x’ through something on his list. today, hyun su had brought back phone chargers, a lighter, and a few items to tide over their food rations. they could stop for today.
he doesn’t speak again for a moment, turns words over in his mind. he gives a low hum; ❝ i'm not surprised she took a liking to you. ❞ amused, maybe, at the thought. ( hyun su, their resident monster, and the man everyone took for a gangster — she adopted outcasts. ) eun hyuk turns a pen in his hand absently.
❝ did she ever tell you about our parents? ❞ he asks, after a beat. continues slow. ❝ … we didn’t have money. but our parents made sure she got to her ballet lessons. they went to every recital. ❞ he turns slightly, half perched against the desk. he looks back unwavering, now, at hyun su’s face. ❝ she’s lost a lot. but i can’t stand in for them. i know. ❞ maybe he had tried too hard. maybe they were too different. but eun hyuk knew well she blamed herself just as much. he wonders why hyun su brings it up now. he wonders why he’s answered so openly.
