Middle Plan Houses in Póvoa de Lanhoso

Middle Plan Houses, Portugal
For this land in Póvoa de Lanhoso, district of Braga, there was an objective: to make better use of the natural characteristics of the context, providing greater harmony between housing and the nature of the place. For the Middle Plan Houses project LIMIT studio proposed to carry out an amendment to the pre-established legal rules in the allotment, in order to enable a greater housing integration with the accesses and the existing natural dimensions of the lot. So, instead of a house with 3 floors (basement, ground floor and floor 1), the architects suggest a house with 2 floors (ground floor, floor 1), and an annex building for a garage.
Due to the existing gap of 2 meters between the access level and the land, LIMIT studio believe that a half-floor entrance could result in a smoothier arrival inside the house.
Therefore, from the same elevation of the road, it is possible to reach an entrance hall, at the middle level of the interior stairs, from where the architects were able to establish an immediate and inviting visual relationship with the living room. From here, you can choose to go down to the social area of the house – living rooms, kitchen and access to the lot’s exterior space – or choose to go up to the upper and more private floor – the bedrooms.
Car access to the garage is also made at the level of the enabling street, which, therefore, allows direct and flat pedestrian access from the garage to the entrance hall of the house.
In terms of exterior material, the intention was to promote a continuity of the traditional construction, through the reinterpretation of the use of stone on the floor in contact with the ground and a lighter and more permeable material on the upper floor.
In cooperation with the property developer, it was possible to achieve formal and aesthetic continuity in the total set of five houses, albeit with certain flexibility in adapting interior aspects to the specific needs of the residents of each house.

22 Sep 2021 White ReCapture wins BA Tech Awards
After a live pitch to the jury and physical and digital participants at Business Arena Stockholm today, White ReCapture was named the winner of the BA Tech Awards, in the category of Most Innovative Real Estate Operator.
The BA Tech Awards celebrates innovation and new services that can contribute to making the real estate industry more efficient and attractive, but also address the major challenge of reducing the industry’s climate impact. Receiving this award is proof that White Arkitekter as an architectural practice has expanded its role from being a user of new technology to driving its development.
“It feels fantastic to receive this award that celebrates innovation in this field and addresses the climate challenges. With White ReCapture we help property owners and developers to take the next step towards more sustainable and circular portfolios”, says Niklas Eriksson, Head of White ReCapture at White Arkitekter.
Digitalisation and innovation are crucial for the industry to reach its roadmap of climate neutrality in 2045 and not least for White Arkitekter as their vision is that all their architecture will be climate neutral or better already from 2030.
“This is a great recognition for the entrepreneurial team that developed the service from an idea to a fully developed service to implement in the market. It is fantastic that BA Tech Awards is highlighting this digi-physical innovation that is accelerating the transition to net zero”, says Petter Green, Director Digital Business at White Arkitekter.

Art and Culture Center Hollywood Education Wing Expansion
Design: Brooks + Scarpa, Architects
Location: 1650 Harrison Street, Hollywood, FL 33020, USA
Hollywood’s Art and Culture Center Expansion Moves Closer to Construction
Brooks + Scarpa’s long planned addition for the The Art and Culture Center Hollywood has finally been approved by the City to move forward towards construction. The new 5,400 square foot addition will bookend the existing center with an expanded Arts Education wing, containing state- of- the- art studios for performance, visual arts, digital media, and music. In addition to these studios, an expanded reception and shared lobby space open onto a new central courtyard, blending the historic structure with the new addition.
Project Description:
The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is a cultural landmark in Hollywood, Florida, celebrated for being among the first to introduce contemporary arts to the surrounding community. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood presents contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances, and high- quality arts education programs for adults and children in its current facility housed in a historic Mediterranean Revival building.
The original two- story house on site, the ‘Kagey Mansion’, was built in 1924 at the height of the land boom in Hollywood, Florida as one of South Florida’s first showplace homes, completed a year before the City of Hollywood was incorporated. As the city grew around it, it remained a private residence until 1960, when it was expanded and converted to a funeral home, operating until 1989. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood moved into the facility in 1992, fostering a creative environment where new and challenging work can flourish through programs that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity.
Now, a newly planned addition will bookend the existing center with an expanded Arts Education wing, containing state- of- the- art studios for performance, visual arts, digital media, and music. In addition to these studios, an expanded reception and shared lobby space open onto a new central courtyard, blending the historic structure with the new addition.
Sensitive to the history of the site, the original building is allowed to retain its visual presence with the new addition existing harmoniously, yet independently, from the historic structure. Drawing from the original facade’s arches and clay tile roof, a new blended architecture of balance between old and new is created.
Formally, a catenary arch is lifted onto itself, creating a sweeping roof structure of cross- laminated timber with a shared arcade below, complementing the dominant visual elements of the original building. Wrapped in a screen of copper anodized aluminum, the new form is given a rhythm as one moves past that allows it to come alive. This creates dancing patterns of light and shadow along one face of the building, while the front- facing studio exhibits dance along the other.
A building is a physical record of its time, place, and use. Too often the push to create a false sense of history has stripped away the beauty and lessons to be learned from the layering of different periods. Mindful of this, the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood aims to transform in order to truly preserve. In juxtaposing the historic and contemporary, visitors to the Center are allowed to make a direct comparison between past and present and view both of equal value instead of ranking one above the other.
The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, in partnership with the City of Hollywood, is currently engaged in the development phase for the construction of a new arts education building next to the Kagey Home facility at 1650 Harrison Street in downtown Hollywood. Funded in part through the General Obligation Bond approved by Hollywood voters in 2019, the 5,400-square-foot education space is being designed to house classrooms for dance, music, visual arts and new media, and will include an outdoor courtyard.
More than just a building, it should be a civic place for social interaction, bringing people closer to art and each other, providing opportunities for new, immersive art experiences.
The arts education building will connect to the west side of the Kagey Home, creating a modern link to the two-story, circa-1924 Spanish Mediterranean facade of the Center’s contemporary galleries and administrative offices.
The facilities expansion will add:
• Dance/Drama Studio that can also host yoga, live performance, and artist talks • Visual Arts classroom equipped with sinks and cabinetry • Distance Learning broadcast and video/music recording capability • Music classroom with acoustic panels • Outdoor Courtyard/Art Garden • Lobby that connects to the Kagey facility
This is the first project in the City’s plan to modernize and increase capacity for arts programming at the 1.2-acre Art and Culture Center/Hollywood site. Future expansion on the east side of the Kagey Home will include construction of a new performing arts studio and the renovation of current gallery spaces.
