(Made up bit heavily inspired by bit with much much better women’s rights) In England late mediveal or early renaissance time, how would I put a bridge on a very large and wide river that large ships like cogs and big carraks can get under? I’d like to keep to that time period as closely as possible (but with different women’s rights) but I realised I need big carraks and cogs to go up a river I need many bridges on. Would swing bridges do? What would those be made of in those times? Stone?Wood?

eGood to know! Presuming a world without magic...if it's late medieval / early renaissance, just use drawbridges.

Understand that your boats will have to be smaller than most seagoing vessels. However,that doesn't mean they cannot be quite useful, and it doesn't mean they cannot be sailboats; they can! They just need to be more slender and shorter--not just to navigate between the central support pillars for said drawbridges, but also simply to navigate the twists and turns of any river.

This particular scene from the BBC's Edwardian Farm series has an example of just such a boat: https://youtu.be/obIWqJlxniY?t=1030 You should watch it, even though they're actually just discussing using quicklime to neutralize the acidity of the local soils, and how they're importing coal for use in burning in the lime kilns.

The most important feature of the scene for our discussion is how it shows the size of cargo ship that would sail up a slow, calm river. The various boats that sailed up and down the Yangtze River, the Nile, Hudson River, the Mississippi, the gazillion waterways of the Amazon and more, all of these had a lot of river-based commerce. Even the canals of Angkor Wat had a great deal of commerce via boat.

In some cases, such as at Angkor Wat, they would have had stevedores (dockworkers) standing by at bridge causeways that boats couldn't cross. These workers would literally offload cargo from one canal boat, carry it a few yards across the street to the next canal's boat, load it there, and send it on its way along a different canal system. (You'd have to see how the roads and canals at Angkor Wat were built to understand this system.) In other locations, they would have boat-pontoons serving as a floating bridge that could be unlashed and moved out of the way so that cargo ships could cross, and there would often be regular times for these switchups to occur.

But if you're dealing with late medieval / renaissance levels of ingenuity, then winches, gears, capistans, etc, would all be a part of their canal system, with broad, stoutly made drawbridges being drawn up and lowered down at regular points in the day.

Some of these pulley systems could be animal-powered (horse, mule, oxen, whatever), or it could be a wheel that a man would walk along, kind of like a hamster wheel, such as the kind found here: https://youtu.be/s46qP1l39V8?t=628 Though it's a long zoom in, you can see toward the end there are actual humans inside thos wheels, walking slowly to raise and lower whatever needs to get up to the building site. A drawbridge system would be no different.

You can also use folding masts. Since you're not dealing with a specific real-world place-and-time, you can borrow from other eras and traditions, including ancient historical methods, such as the bipod mast: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipod_mast These were used as far back as the 3rd millenium BCE to sail up and down the Nile...which admittedly didn't have bridges to sail under, but the stability of the bipod mast made it easy to lay it down without overbalancing the ship.

With some clever hinges and pulleys and gears, a Renaissance shipmaster could make a system that would allow the sails to be quickly brought down...though to maintain forward motion when going upstream, they'd probably have to pay a lining service a fee to line the ship upstream. This is literally the same system used to maneuver canal barges upstream (and down!), powered by horsepower, literal horses, donkeys, mules, oxen, etc. This particular scene from the Victorian Farm series shows one such canal barge being used to deliver a load of coal, as they would've done in the Victorian era: https://youtu.be/Ccjyt7BQEVU?t=1374 In the scene, they talk about how it's "...a fly boat, going day and night; they change out the horses..." to indicate that these were in constant use. You can see how there's a path built under the bridge for the horse to walk along.

The barge would be manned and steered in most cases, since that's easier than doing it manually by the two-line method, but they'd still probably have two lines on the boat in most instances, in case the helmsman fell asleep, or there was a change in the current, etc. There would also be strict "lanes" for upstream versus downstream traffic, ideally with walkways on each side so as to keep the lines from tangling--this would be in use in areas with really flat slow/sluggish water, not enough room to use galley oars, not enough room to set sails, yet you still want your cargo to head downstream at more than a snail's pace with the natural current (ideal for big cities).

Small barges could also be poled like the gondolae of Venice, but again, that's small barges, since there's only so much effort poling can manage before it becomes nigh impossible not only to get up to speed, but also to slow down to make a turn, to stop, etc. So consider if your river is slow, if it's a series of canals, how many bridges there are, what sort of workforce there might be for loading & unloading, and for portaging.

To portage is to go around an obstacle that a boat (of whatever size) cannot safely manage. The most famous portages were done by the voyageurs of the fur trade in Canada, where they'd come upon a stretch of rapids too dangerous to traverse or have to leave the river they're on to go in the direction they need to get to the next river or lake system, etc. At that point, the fur trappers/canoers would get out, offload their cargo, and carry it and their canoes--sometimes for miles!--to the next navigable stretch of water...and most cases they'd have to set up camp when they got there, then go back for everything that got left behind, and haul all of that to the new spot.

In many cases in the wilderness, they'd leave 1-2 behind to guard said provisions, etc, either at the offloading site or the final destination site. But if you're dealing with a civilized/settled area, they wouldn't necessarily have to do that, but might instead arrange passage with wagoners / caravaners, the people who got paid to transport river-shipped goods between two points overland.

There are also the possibilities for canal locks (the ancient Romans had a precursor to the system we know of today) as well, but it honestly depends on how much that region has decided to put in the effort to dig and construct and manage them. If it's wealthy, has a history of innovation, and/or relies heavily upon river commerce, then it's quite possible. But most likely, drawbridges and folding masts are going to be ideal.

Just remember that those ships and masts are not going to be designed to withstand open-ocean travel or hurricane force winds, nor to carry hundreds of tons. River ships are not going to be the same as ocean or sea going vessels. For example:

For example, while the earlier galleons had capacities for 120 toneladas (Spanish tons), the post-1560 galleons tended to cross thresholds of 330 toneladas." Or: "...a typical American barge measures 195 by 35 feet (59.4 m × 10.7 m), and can carry up to about 1,500 short tons (1,400 t) of cargo." (from the entry on Barges, Wikipedia)

These might seem like good resources, but those galleons are oceanic vessels far too large and/or deeply drafted for river navigation, and those barges are modern ones meant for the lower Mississippi River. The latter are also powered by engines, not by wind, oar, or musclepower (animals or humans lining the boat along the riverbank).

Unless your river is huge--at which point ferries will be your ideal method of crossing, rather than bridges--your river-running ships will be small, sleek, relatively shallow drafted, will most likely have collapsing sails, oars for windless days, ropes for lining (even if their own crew has to do it), so on and so forth.

...You can still have bridges without drawbridges, if your river runs through a canyon deep enough that the bridge will clear the masts naturally, or your engineers invest in long, long, long ramps leading up to and over the central arch spanning the deepest part of the river...and invest in lots of riprap (rocks specifically placed for lining the banks of the river to prevent erosion, etc). Unfortunately, most rivers flowing through canyons flow too fast and hard to make good safe transportation routes...and really tall bridges exhaust humans and animals alike in passing over them, so...it's not very likely.

One last consideration: the river itself. Here is a snippet of a video I took when I had the opportunity to go on a Rhein River Cruise (Viking Cruiseline). The cruisehip is docked. It is not moving.

The Rhein really does flow this fast (up near Switzerland, iirc, but all throughout the trip as well), and it only slowed down somewhat at certain points. The banks in the city zones (and even much of the countryside) are lined with riprap (stones fitted and cemented into place to control the river flow and prevent erosion), and yes, there were a few canal locks along the route. A lot of that riprap was laid in earlier centuries, some of it late renaissance (and much of it repaired since then).

We were warned that if there was a lot of rain during our trip (this trip took place in May) causing a lot of runoff to flow into the river, there was a bridge downstream (near the Netherlands) where we might actually have to disembark from this ship literally cross the street for that bridge, and get onto another cruise ship on the downstream side of the bridge. Why? Because if the river level rose too much, this ship would not be able to cross under that bridge.

Now, the ship's top deck was disassembled to pass under other bridges. It literally had awnings and roofs on hinges that could be lowered to as flat as possible...and yet there was still a bridge they knew they couldn't pass under if the river level rose too high. Even with modern tech, etc, there will be obstacles like this.

So consider that for your rivers and your commerce. In spring and autumn, the water might run too high, perhaps even too wild, for safe & easy river travel. Portaging might be the answer. Or your characters might be crossing over the bridge which has an angry river crew arguing with the city guard about why they can't take their ship under the bridge (because it could damage the bridge, it's the wrong season, etc).

...You can also have droughts (oftentimes in high summer) which could cause the river to become too shallow for boats to pass in certain sections, or they'll have to lighten their cargo to avoid getting mired in the mud, etc.

And if your story is set in a region with cold winters, snow, ice, etc...the river might freeze. This poses a whole host of transportation problems, but then transport wasn't often done in the depths of winter, save maybe for foods brought from the storage barns of local farms. If the rivers don't freeze over, water travel is still possible, though hypothermia is still a danger.

If they freeze only a little bit, still possible...but once the ice gets thick along the edges, it becomes dangerous to try to "cut" through the ice with a boat of any size. This can include ice that is too thick to get the boat close enough to shore to exchange cargo and/or passengers, but also the possibility of ice actually damaging a ship's hull.

And of course merely walking on the ice is sheer danger, unless you know exactly what to look for, how deep it needs to be, etc, to be crossed safely--the idyllic picture of the Dutch ice skating along their canals doesn't cover the fact that many people fell through the ice because they hit a stretch that was too thin to support their weight. Certainly history doesn't tell us exactly how many perished, though logic assures us that many surely did--either idiots who didn't check the ice depth, or who were young and recklessly brave enough to be foolhardy, an unexpected warming of the water coming downstream thinning out the ice in a specific spot in the channel, etc, etc, etc.

River boat crews would be aware of such potential dangers, and would not want to travel in icy conditions if it was at all avoidable. Which brings us to living on a riverboat, and how to keep warm in winter when the hull is literally in constant contact with icy cold water...but that's another discussion entirely. If the canals are in constant use, the water "might not" freeze over because it'd be constantly disturbed by the passage of all those boats...but it also could, especially if a bad winter storm shut down travel for a few days.

Mostly, river boats would be lifted out of the water if at all possible before the river iced over (which the locals would know about). Why? Because ice expands, and it would expand horizontally into those hulls, cracking them. Water and ice are incredibly powerful forces that we often underestimate. This means that winter is the time when boats would be brought ashore, tipped onto their sides, the hulls scraped free of river mussels and barnacles and whatnot, sections would be repaired, the hulls re-tarred, and other maintenance issues tended to.

If river commerce slows or stops in the winter due to ice issues, then you'll have wagons and/or sleighs, etc, bringing in the goods...but again, your horses or other draft animals will have a harder time working in cold weather. Your cities will therefore want most of their goods brought into the city's storehouses before winter falls, if it's an area with harsh winters.

If they're just rainy and wet and miserable for the most part (*cough* the greater Seattle region (*cough*)...then flooding will be your biggest concern. If it's a region with seasonal droughts & monsoons...you could have a whole host of problems, but you'd also probably want retention ponds and lakes to help keep the river flowing--fill them up in the stormy season and let out some of that water in the dry season to keep the river at a hopefully passable depth.

Bridges (and drawbridges), boats, and rivers are all part and parcel with the equation.

One more thing, if your local region is building a bridge in the story (a common occurrence in the renaissance in many towns), it doesn't have to be a part of the story directly, but can be mentioned second-hand, like one of your characters can say, "avoid the Baker's Bridge--remember, they're doing repairwork on it."

If this is a thing you want to toss into the story (it makes your town feel alive, a growing and changing thing, without having to go into exhaustive detail), then remember that the architects will have hopefully taken all the shipping and transportation needs into account...but that section of the river or canal will be blocked by scaffolding, requiring everyone to portage around it. If it is a river split in two by an island, or it's a canal shooting off from or paralleling the main river, you'll still be able to have commerce up and down the river, but it will cause that river travel to be thicker and more prone to clogs, blockages, accidents, arguments, etc.

These are little details you can put into your story to give your world more depth without having to go into exhaustive detail.

"Well obviously," says Professor Ulik, faintly irritated. "I thought you were a bit cleverer than that,Three, I really did. Yes, but specifically I need you to make sure that one of my classes is on the auditor's schedule. You may use whatever methods you please to get it there. The less I know, the better."

Her message communicated, Professor Ulik returns to her papers. You begin to consider your situation. This would be an unparalleled opportunity to ensure Professor Ulik's selection for a tenured position and what else are you here for, anyway?

But how to get an audience with the newly-arrived auditor?

#Val's on the Board of Visitors and Overlords. I'm going to consult zir about this situation.

This isn’t particularly helpful to Three’s intention to stay as far away from the auditors as possible. Their first plan is still to ask DarkBoard if they’re able to alter Goul’s schedule, but when DarkBoard gives a foreboding speech about how they shouldn’t meddle in forces far beyond their control, (Three is pretty sure DarkBoard’s scared of the auditors but don’t want to admit it,) they realise they’re going to have to talk to these people. This hopefully won’t be overly dangerous, after all, they are excellent at being helpful to important people, and tend to be good at quickly working out the level of grovelling important people prefer, so they’re unlikely to annoy the auditors. The danger that comes with just being around important, powerful people is inevitable, but they hope they can avoid the worst by appearing as a mere supporting character in Ulik’s narrative, unnoticeable to the auditors underneath all her achievements.

The best place to start with this is Val. Scorpius told Three ze was on the Board of Overseers and, while Three has been trying to interact with Val as little as possible, ze’s at least someone they’re able to get an audience with. And--despite a slight annoyance about Scorpius spilling zir secrets--Val apparently either likes them enough, or thinks they’re plot relevant enough, to help.

Ze is, however, going to point out that meeting with the Auditors isn’t the kind of thing people with no narrative weight do. It doesn’t matter what reason Three gives--do they think there isn’t a story in an underdog brave enough to put themself in the firing line of powerful villains they’re frightened of, just out of loyalty to their wise and supportive mentor? And Val has a feeling this isn’t the first time Three’s done this. Three informs them that they are not a hero, or an underdog, or special in any way whatsoever. Val tells them that ze knows better than most how Narrative Weight isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, so ze’s really, genuinely sorry to say this, but that’s not true, Three. Three decides they’d better get over to that meeting before they’re late, so doesn’t have time to listen to Val try and tell them they’re more than just a tool.

The minutes Val showed you indicated that a team of no less than three auditors would be arriving from the Board of Visitors and Overlords. And you're fairly certain you know who this one is.

The falling pieces of the dome leave trails of fire in the air all around you. The air of the artificial atmosphere is rushing upward; the weather programs that the dome once produced are sputtering fitfully. Fish, frogs, bolts of lightning, hailstones and drops of blood tumble at random from the shattering sky.

"Lord X!" you call, as the figure lightly touches down to the earth. "Welcome to the Grand Academy for Future Villains!"

The figure turns towards you, and you see that the upper half of his face is concealed by a black mask like a frozen lava flow. His clothes are rich and close-fitting, his black shirt with silver buttons reaching to the neck, his hands concealed by silver gloves, and a belt around his waist supports a really alarming arsenal of weapons. You spot what looks like an oversized silver revolver, a long sword, a short sword, and a gun that looks strangely familiar. There's also a trowel tucked into a beautifully tooled black leather sheath; there's probably some explanation for this besides being for some sort of demonic gardener.

"Well done…student," says Lord X.

Val, watching from under the shelter of a black umbrella, gives the slightest of nods to the auditor.

Again, not something Three would have done if Ulik hadn’t wanted them to talk to the auditors, they’d much rather be running to hide right now, or else checking the sudden environmental changes of the world falling apart aren’t adversely affecting DarkBoard. But they do like important people being impressed with them.

As if it overheard your unspoken question—which you suppose it did—the nearest DarkBoard portal begins scrolling through something you recognize as the fine print of your application paperwork. You look at the scrolling text:

Okay, okay.

It may not be immediately relevant to the current scene, but I think it’s worth noting that students “consent” to the Academy’s use of their offspring. Being the child of an alumnus, Three was a little concerned, if resigned, about that when reading their own application paperwork. Those feelings haven’t completely gone away, but they also realise this could be an excellent excuse if Maedryn ever discovers their loyalty to DarkBoard. She herself signed them away to the Academy before they even existed, and if necessary, Three will remind her that neither of them can complain if DarkBoard wishes to collect on that.

Three has never wanted children themself, but the Academy’s application paperwork just makes them more sure of that.

You've kept your bargain with Professor Ulik. Whatever the auditor says, the fact that you faced one of the most powerful beings on the Academy grounds has to count for something.

It's a simple request—so simple the auditor seems taken by surprise. You hold your breath, waiting for an answer. "Of course," says the auditor. "Next week. Of course, we make no promises as to the nature of our judgment. Only of its inevitability."

"Fifteen seconds," pipes the assistant.

Variyah Goul stands up. She does not offer you her hand. "Your career, of course, will be of interest to us, whatever becomes of the school."

"Ten."

"If at the end of the year we find you an individual of sufficient narrative weight…there are certain provisions made for individuals who are fit for a great destiny. I am impressed by hedonism and competence, and the portfolio of destinies I manage are those of grandeur and glory."

"And zero." The assistant escorts you out of the room.

That went… surprisingly well. Three’s alive. They’ve at least slightly impressed two auditors. Goul’s agreed to observe Ulik’s class. Three wasn’t given time to have to pretend to be interested in a destiny.

They are growing increasingly concerned that the Academy’s accreditation may not, in fact, be renewed, but all they have to do is show that a place with teachers as good as Professor Ulik is worthwhile, make sure Maedryn isn’t too stressed by her various responsibilities that the clones stop working, help Sona keep Sci-Fi looking respectable and genre savvy, and do whatever DarkBoard requests to help the Academy run smoothly.

((Side note: I did originally accidentally replace a bit too much of the “insert your professor here” text with “professor ulik” when I originally typed this up, with the result that Three very unfortunately invited one of the most powerful villains in the universe to come observe Professor Ulik’s ass. They don’t want to talk about it.))

The senior students that approach you after your Evil Planning class are well known to you. They're a group of Thriller and Science Fiction students that even in these polarized times of inter-genre competition, have remained friends and close collaborators.

"Three!" one of them calls to you. "Do you have a second? We want you to try this!"

This is rarely the prelude to something good, but often the prelude to something interesting. You pause.

"This is our capstone project for our Cyberpunk Dystopia class," explains another, proffering his personal DarkBoard portal, its screen glowing. "A dating app for the Academy! We need beta testers! And, well, a lot of people have been requesting you."

"It's right here in the early feedback," confirms the third. "Let's see…'If it doesn't have Three I'm not joining'…'Where's Three I mean the real one not the clone'…'Please add an option to romance Three.'"

You look warily at the colorful images on the DarkBoard portal. What's so dystopian about a dating app?

"Well, it's powered by DarkBoard, for one thing," says the first student, "so it can be kind of unpredictable. And wildly intrusive. But the administration is interested in monitoring the personal lives of its students."

"Personally I think DarkBoard's getting a bit lonely," adds the second, behind his hand, as if that could conceal his comment from the security system.

I mean, there might be a couple of students wanting to find out what’s underneath Three’s aloof emotionless exterior, but I really doubt there’s anyone specifically asking for them. In any case, they have far more important things to do than trying to find another relationship at the moment, and even if they wanted one, they wouldn’t be looking for it on an intrusive dating app made by a bunch of students they have no reason to trust.

But, well, they don’t exactly completely object to submitting information about certain preferences they may have to a system powered by DarkBoard. It’s a villainous action to sign up to a dating site and then ruthlessly reject every classmate who appears on there, isn’t it?

Besides the grinning face of Science Fiction's figurehead, a long list of diagrams and spec charts appears. Sona, or DarkBoard on Sona's behalf, is listing out all her weapons and modifications. You're fascinated—there are some extraordinarily personal items here. You would never have guessed about the navel turret, for instance.

All right, getting lists of people’s hidden abilities is also a very useful feature of this app. Three just hopes their own profile isn’t going to start listing out the dozens of weapons they have hidden on their person at all times.

The portal clouds over again, but this time, when it clears, no face is visible at all. Slowly words form on the portal's surface.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT THE WORLD LOOKS LIKE WHEN SEEN THROUGH A THOUSAND EYES?

"Uh-oh." One of the Cyberpunk Dystopia students tries to snatch the portal out of your hands. "It's doing it again. Close! Close! Administrator override!"

SHED YOUR FLESH, continues DarkBoard, AND JOIN US IN THE TIMELESS VOID BETWEEN ELECTRONS.

"Yeah, this is a known issue," explains the leader. "Every so often DarkBoard will decide that it wants to get in on some of the action. Sorry about that."

He hands you back your portal, now quiet and docile. Is that Xi's lingering influence? Does something about DarkBoard remember you as an object of romance?

"You know where to find us! Thanks for trying it out!"

And they're gone.

Well, even if Three’s list of concealed weapons are on view to everyone on the dating app now, the student trying to snatch the portal away from Three is not prepared for a kick in the groin and a gun pointed at him before he has a chance to react, as Three calmly explains that they want to be aware of all known issues before deciding whether to continue using the app or not. After taking a few moments to closely examine this one, they tell the cyberpunk students that they can live with it. They spend a fair amount of their free time (limited though that is) on the app over the next few months, while making sure to reject every student profile they find.

The app does cause another slight issue, however, given that the rejection messages it sends are calibrated to, “cause greatest emotional impact to the target!” Three and Aurion awkwardly avoid each other for the next few weeks, after they each receive a horrifying rejection message about how the other loves them far too much like a sibling, and is so grateful for the bond they already have.

And then this final scene doesn’t actually take place, because Three doesn’t have a nemesis or a pet, so doesn’t need help dealing with them, but:

Professor Ulik thinks so highly of you that she leaves the class that she was in the middle of teaching to rush to the ${temphousing}.

1. INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Boom Video Chat!

Your use of Boom Video Chat is subject to these Terms of Service (these " Terms"). Thank you for reviewing these Terms – we hope you enjoy using Boom Video Chat.

1.1 Compliance with these Terms

These Terms apply to you if you are a user of Boom Video Chat anywhere in the world.

Please review these Terms and our policies and instructions to understand how you can and cannot use Boom Video Chat. You must comply with these Terms in your use of Boom Video Chat and only use Boom Video Chat as permitted by applicable laws and regulations, wherever you may be when you use this software.

If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not use Boom Video Chat and must immediately terminate your use of this software and all services.

1.2 Contracting Entity

By using Boom Video Chat, you are agreeing to be bound by these Terms between you and MEET TECH LIMITED, a company incorporated under the law of the Hong Kong with its registered office at Room 1003, 10/F, Tower 1, Lippo Centre, 89 Queensway, Admiralty, Hong Kong. ("we", "our" and "us").

We may specify in certain of our Boom Video Chat service-specific terms that you are contracting with one of our affiliate companies or Service Providers (instead of us) in relation to your use of the relevant Boom Video Chat service or feature to which the relevant service-specific terms apply. Where this is the case, the relevant contracting entity will be identified in the relevant Boom Video Chat service-specific terms, and these Terms (and those relevant service-specific terms) will apply between you and that identified contracting entity in relation to your use of the relevant Boom Video Chat services or features.

1.3 Service Eligibility

The services of Boom Video Chat are not for use by anyone under the age of【18】.

To use the services, you agree that: (i) you must be the “Minimum Age” (described below) or older; and (ii) you are not already restricted by us from using the services provided via Boom Video Chat.

We may change the Minimum Age from time to time based on our sole discretion. Where this is the case, the users of Boom Video Chat who were below the new Minimum Age when they started using the services under a previous Terms of Service may continue to use them, as they have already reached the new Minimum Age since then.

“Minimum Age” means 【18】 years old. However, if applicable law requires that you must be older in order to lawfully use Boom Video Chat without parental consent (including using of your personal data) then the Minimum Age is such older age.

If applicable law requires you to obtain the consent from your parent or guardian, then your parent or guardian must agree to these Terms (both for themselves and on your behalf) before you can use Boom Video Chat.

1.4 Other general terms in relation to these Terms

We may translate these Terms into multiple languages, and in the event there is any difference between the English version and any other language version of these Terms, the English version will apply (to the extent permitted by applicable laws and regulations).

2. ADDITIONAL TERMS AND POLICIES

We offer a diverse range of services and features within Boom Video Chat, so in addition to these Terms, there may be certain additional terms and policies that may be applicable to your use of all or part of Boom Video Chat, as set out in this section and as otherwise notified to you from time to time. These additional terms of service and policies all form part of and are incorporated into these Terms.

2.1 Boom Video Chat policies

Besides these Terms, you must also comply with Boom Video Chat Privacy Policy which sets out how we collect, store and use your personal information in using Boom Video Chat.

2.2 Terms applicable to specific Boom Video Chat features

Some of our services and features may have additional terms specific to their use (as notified by us to you), and you must comply with such additional terms in your use of such services and features, as well as these Terms.

2.3 Inconsistencies

To the extent that any additional terms or policies are different from these Terms, the relevant additional terms or additional policies will apply, except that nothing in those additional terms or policies will (unless expressly indicated otherwise in those additional terms or policies) amend the following sections of these Terms:

· "Changes to these Terms and Boom Video Chat";

· "Our Intellectual Property Rights"; and

· "Liability for Boom Video Chat".

3. CHANGES TO THESE TERMS AND Boom Video Chat

We may make changes to these Terms above from time to time, so please come back and review them.

In addition, as Boom Video Chat and user experiences are constantly evolving, we may from time to time (and to the extent permitted by applicable laws and regulations) add, change or remove features from Boom Video Chat (including in relation to whether a service is free of charge or not), or suspend or terminate a service altogether.

4. YOUR ACCOUNT

You will need to create an account with us in order to access and use Boom Video Chatvia 1） using your existing account opened at third party social media platforms (such as Facebook or Google) and 2) registering and logging in as visitors. Under the circumstance you choose 1), we will have the right to access, collect and use your information relating to these third party accounts.

Any account that you open with us is personal to you and you are prohibited from gifting, lending, transferring or otherwise permitting any other person to access or use your account. Your account name, user ID and other identifiers you adopt within Boom Video Chat remains our property and we can disable, reclaim and reuse these once your account is terminated or deactivated for whatever reason by either you or us.

You are responsible for: (i) safeguarding your account details, including any password used to access your account and Boom Video Chat, and (ii) all use of Boom Video Chat under your account. You must promptly notify us at【[email protected]】 if you know or suspect that your password or account has been compromised. We will regard all use of your account on Boom Video Chat as being by you, except where we have received and acknowledged your notification to us regarding your account/password being compromised.

Boom Video Chat may offer methods for deactivating your service-specific account – please refer to Boom Video Chat for further guidance (if available) from time to time.

Please note that when you login as a visitor, there is always a risk of loss of both your account and any interests linked with the account, such as gold coins you prepaid. Therefore, we highly recommend you login through Facebook or Google account, to avoid any risk of loss of information and gold coins.

5. PAYMENTS

You may, from time to time, make payments to us or third parties as part of your use of Boom Video Chat (including for the provision of Boom Video Chat or provision of certain additional features within Boom Video Chat). We may set out further terms applying to such payments (including in relation to refunds (if any), billing arrangements and any consequences of failing to make timely payments). You must comply with all such terms in relation to your payments to us. You agree that you are solely responsible for all fees and taxes associated with any such payments, and that pricing and availability of items and products are subject to change at any time.

SUBJECT TO MANDATORY APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS OR AS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED BY US FOR A PARTICULAR ITEM OR PRODUCT WITHIN Boom Video Chat, IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL WE BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A REFUND FOR ANY PAYMENTS MADE BY YOU TO US IN RELATION TO ANY ITEMS OR PRODUCTS WITHIN Boom Video Chat (WHETHER USED OR UNUSED).

We may process payments from you in Boom Video Chat via a third party service and you agree to comply with that relevant third party's terms and conditions in relation to the payment processing service, as further set out in the "Third Party Content and Services" section below.

Also, you agree that:

· your purchase may be subject to foreign exchange fees or differences in prices based on location (e.g. exchange rates); and

· we may calculate taxes payable by you based on the billing information that you provide us at the time of purchase.

6. YOUR CONTENT

When you submit, upload, transmit or display any data, information, photograph or other content in connection with your use of Boom Video Chat (" Your Content"), you understand and agree that:

· you will continue to own and be responsible for Your Content;

· we will not sell Your Content to any third party;

· Your Content will be shared with other users of Boom Video Chat in many ways. For example, Your Content will be seen by other users of Boom Video Chat once you have uploaded Your Content to Boom Video Chat;

· you are giving us and our affiliate companies the right to use Your Content (with no fees or charges payable by us to you) solely for the purposes of providing, promoting, developing and trying to improve Boom Video Chat and our other services, including new services that we may provide in the future;

· in using Your Content for these purposes, we and our affiliate companies may copy, reproduce, host, store, process, adapt, modify, translate, perform, distribute and publish Your Content worldwide by all distribution methods, including those that are developed in the future;

· we may share Your Content with third parties that we work with to help provide, promote, develop and improve Boom Video Chat, but these third parties (other than our affiliate companies) will not make any separate use of Your Content for their own purposes (i.e. for any purposes that are not related to Boom Video Chat);

· we may use the name that you submit in connection with Your Content (whether that be your account name, real name or otherwise); and

· you will comply with these Terms in your submission of Your Content.

· You are prohibited from posting and agree not to post any prohibited content as determined by company, in its sole discretion and which includes, without limitation: Sexually Explicit Material, Violence and Bullying, Hate Speech, Sensitive Events, Unlawful Activity, IP Infringement.

In addition, you agree that we and our affiliate companies (subject to these Terms, our Boom Video Chat Privacy Policy and applicable laws and regulations):

· are allowed to retain and continue to use Your Content after you stop using Boom Video Chat – for example, where you have shared Your Content with other users of Boom Video Chat;

· may be required to retain or disclose Your Content in order to: (i) comply with applicable laws or regulations; (ii) comply with a court order, subpoena or other legal process; or (iii) respond to a lawful request by a government authority, law enforcement agency or similar body (whether situated in your jurisdiction or elsewhere); and

· may need to retain or disclose Your Content in order to enforce these Terms, protect our rights, property or safety, or the rights, property or safety of our affiliate companies or other users of Boom Video Chat.

You understand that even if you seek to delete Your Content from Boom Video Chat, it may as a technical and administrative matter take some time or not be possible to achieve this – for example, we may not be able to prevent any third party from storing or using any of Your Content that you have made public via Boom Video Chat.

We reserve the right to block or remove Your Content for any reason, including as is in our opinion appropriate or as required by applicable laws and regulations.

You are solely responsible for Your Content and we recommend that you keep a back-up copy of it at all times.

You must at all times ensure that: (i) you have the rights required to submit, transmit or display Your Content, and to grant us the rights as set out in these Terms; and (ii) Your Content (and our use of Your Content in accordance with these Terms) does not infringe or violate the rights of any person or otherwise contravene any applicable laws or regulations.

Boom Video Chat is not a storage service. You agree that we have no obligation to store, maintain or provide you a copy of any content or information that you or others provide, except to the extent required by applicable law and as noted in Boom Video Chat Privacy Policy.

7. INFRINGEMENT OF RIGHTS

We may respond to notices of alleged infringement of rights (including infringement of intellectual property rights, defamation and infringement of other civil rights) and other claims and demands. If you have any such infringement-related concerns, please contact【[email protected]】.

8. THIRD PARTY CONTENT AND SERVICES

We are not responsible for and we do not endorse, support or guarantee the lawfulness, accuracy or reliability of any content submitted to, transmitted or displayed by or linked by Boom Video Chat, including content provided by users of Boom Video Chat or by our advertisers. You acknowledge and agree that by using Boom Video Chat, you may be exposed to content which is inaccurate, misleading, defamatory, offensive or unlawful. Any reliance on or use of any content on or accessible from Boom Video Chat by you is at your own risk. Your use of Boom Video Chat does not give you any rights in or to any content you may access or obtain in connection with your use of Boom Video Chat.

We also do not guarantee the quality, reliability or suitability of any third party services provided, made available, advertised or linked through Boom Video Chat and we will bear no responsibility for your use of or relationship with any such third parties or third party services.

We may review (but make no commitment to review) content or third party services made available through Boom Video Chat to determine whether or not they comply with our policies, applicable laws and regulations or are otherwise objectionable. We may remove or refuse to make available or link to certain content or third party services if they infringe intellectual property rights, are obscene, defamatory or abusive, violate any rights or pose any risk to the security or performance of Boom Video Chat.

There may be, from time to time, third party content and services on Boom Video Chat that are subject to further terms – for examples, terms from the relevant third party that originally produced or created such content or service, or terms from the relevant third party in relation to promotional activities being held on Boom Video Chat. You agree to comply with any such further terms and conditions as notified to you in relation to your use of such third party content and services.

9. ADVERTISING CONTENT ON Boom Video Chat

Boom Video Chat may include advertising or commercial content. You agree that we are allowed to integrate, display and otherwise communicate advertising or commercial content in Boom Video Chat.

10. OUR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

All intellectual property rights in or to Boom Video Chat (including any future updates, upgrades and new versions to Boom Video Chat), will continue to belong to us. Except as expressly provided in these Terms, you have no right to use our intellectual property rights. In particular, you have no right to use our trademarks or product names, logos, domain names or other distinctive brand features without our prior written consent. Any comments or suggestions you may provide regarding Boom Video Chat are entirely voluntary and we will be free to use these comments and suggestions at our discretion without any payment or other obligation to you.

You may not copy, modify, reverse compile, reverse engineer or extract source codes from Boom Video Chat, except to the extent that we may not prohibit you from doing so under applicable laws or regulations or you have our prior written consent to do so. Where applicable laws or regulations entitle you to reverse compile or extract source codes from Boom Video Chat, you will first contact us to request the information you need.

We may from time to time provide updates to Boom Video Chat. Such updates may occur automatically or manually. Please note that Boom Video Chat may not operate properly or at all if upgrades or new versions are not installed by you. We do not guarantee that we will make any updates available for any of Boom Video Chat, or that such updates will continue to support your device or system.

We may in our discretion provide technical support for Boom Video Chat (whether for free or for a fee). We provide technical support without any guarantee or warranty of any kind, and subject always to these Terms.

11. USE OF YOUR DEVICE BY Boom Video Chat

In order for us to provide Boom Video Chat to you, we may require access to and/or use of your relevant device (e.g. mobile phone, tablet or desktop computer) that you use to access Boom Video Chat – for example, we may need to use your device's processor and storage to complete the relevant Boom Video Chat software installation, or use your device's camera and microphone to provide video chat services to you. You agree to give us such access to and use of your device.

You hereby authorize us to collect and use the address books, contact lists, mail box, system application lists, device information, and unique device identifiers (IMEI, UDID, or other) contained in the Devices to which you have downloaded Boom Video Chat for purposes of your use of the services.

We will provide further information regarding how Boom Video Chat uses and accesses your device within Boom Video Chat or in another manner (e.g. via the relevant app store as part of the installation process for Boom Video Chat on your device). You understand that if you do not provide us with such right of use or access, we may not be able to provide Boom Video Chat to you.

Any Personal Information (as defined in the Boom Video Chat Privacy Policy) that we use or access within your device will be treated in accordance with these Terms, including our Boom Video Chat Privacy Policy.

You may need an adequate internet connection in order to authentic your Boom Video Chat account or use Boom Video Chat. You may also be required to activate certain functionalities within Boom Video Chat in the manner described within Boom Video Chat. You may not be able to use certain functionalities within Boom Video Chat if you do not comply with such requirements.

Please note that we are not responsible for any third party charges you incur (including any charges from your internet and telecommunication services providers) in relation to or arising from your use of Boom Video Chat.

12. Do’s and Don’ts

12.1 You agree that you will:

a. comply with all applicable laws, including privacy laws, intellectual property laws, anti-spam laws, export control laws, tax laws, and regulatory requirements;

b. strictly follow these Terms; and

c. use Boom Video Chat in a good manner.

12.2 You agree that you won’t:

a. act in an unlawful or bad manner in connection with Boom Video Chat, including being dishonest, abusive or discriminatory;

b. post defamatory obscene, shocking, hateful, threatening or otherwise inappropriate content or airing personal grievances or disputes;

c. create a profile for anyone other than yourself (a real person);

d. use or attempt to use another's account;

e. steal or attempt to steal another’s virtual property, such as virtual gifts;

f. harass, abuse or harm another person;

g. develop, support or use software, devices, scripts, robots, or any other means or processes (including crawlers, add-ons, or any other technology or manual work) to scrape Boom Video Chat or otherwise copy profiles and other data from Boom Video Chat;

h. bypass or circumvent any access controls or service use limits;

i. copy, use, disclose or distribute any information obtained from Boom Video Chat, whether directly or through third parties (such as search engines), without the consent of us;

j. use, disclose or distribute any data obtained in violation of these Terms;

k. disclose information that you do not have the consent to disclose (such as confidential information of others);

l. violate the intellectual property rights of others, including copyrights, patents, trademarks, trade secrets, or other proprietary rights;

m. violate the intellectual property or other rights of us;

n. post anything that contains software viruses, worms, or any other harmful code;

o. manipulate identifiers in order to disguise the origin of any message or post transmitted through Boom Video Chat;

p. create or operate a pyramid scheme, fraud or other similar practice;

q. reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, decipher or otherwise attempt to derive the source code for Boom Video Chat or any related technology that is not open source;

r. remove, cover or obscure any advertisement included in Boom Video Chat;

s. use bots or other automated methods to access Boom Video Chat, add or download contacts, send or redirect messages;

t. monitor Boom Video Chat’s availability, performance or functionality for any competitive purpose;

u. access Boom Video Chat except through the interfaces expressly provided by us, such as its mobile applications;

v. use Boom Video Chat for tasks that it is not intended for;

w. override any security feature of Boom Video Chat; and/or

x. interfere with the operation of, or place an unreasonable load on, Boom Video Chat (e.g., spam, denial of service attack, viruses, gaming algorithms).

13. WARRANTY AND DISCLAIMER

We warrant to you that we will provide Boom Video Chat using reasonable care and skill.

APART FROM THIS WARRANTY, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS, Boom Video Chat IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS AND NEITHER US NOR ANY OF OUR AFFILIATE COMPANIES MAKE ANY REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY OR GIVES ANY UNDERTAKING IN RELATION TO Boom Video Chat OR ANY CONTENT SUBMITTED, TRANSMITTED OR DISPLAYED BY Boom Video Chat, INCLUDING: (I) ANY REPRESENTATION, WARRANTY OR UNDERTAKING THAT Boom Video Chat WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE OR ERROR-FREE OR FREE FROM VIRUSES; (II) THAT Boom Video Chat WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR DEVICE; OR (III) THAT Boom Video Chat WILL BE OF MERCHANTABLE QUALITY, FIT FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NOT INFRINGE THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS, YOU WAIVE ANY AND ALL IMPLIED REPRESENTATIONS, WARRANTIES AND UNDERTAKINGS.

14. LIABILITY FOR Boom Video Chat

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS, THE TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY OF US AND OUR AFFILIATE COMPANIES FOR ALL CLAIMS IN CONNECTION WITH THESE TERMS, OR Boom Video Chat, ARISING OUT OF ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, WILL BE LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US TO USE Boom Video Chat AND IN NO EVENT WILL IT EXCEED $50.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS, IN NO EVENT WILL WE OR ANY OF OUR AFFILIATE COMPANIES BE LIABLE FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

The Resurrection Right Now | Matthew 6:5-15

Main Idea: The Resurrection means that God’s kingdom has come and his will is being done in our lives, right now!

I. Accessibility to God Right Now (v5-8):

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Spiritually speaking, we are brought into the very presence of God with full access through prayer.

According to Jesus there is a right way to access God through prayer and a wrong way.

Jesus is speaking to a religious audience so the assumption is that they prayed (“when you pray”).

All along he has targeted the religious leaders who distorted God’s Word to serve themselves.

Jesus calls them actors, pretenders (“hypocrites”), who love to be noticed when they pray (v5).

Jesus says there is certainly no place for this in his kingdom.

He says they “have received their reward” (the praise of man)..

These pretenders would pray in a way where they would “heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do” thinking “they will be heard for their many words” (v7).

Jesus says “Do not be like them.” (v8).

They thought access to God was determined by how effective their communication with him was.

Our access to God isn’t determined by us, and it certainly isn’t about us. But we do have access and it’s not complicated:

“go into your room and shut your door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (v6).

When we see prayer as full access to the presence of God, we will only be concerned with our access to God.

Prayer is access to a Father God who sees us “in secret” because he sees all.

But he also loves us, so he “rewards” us with his presence.

A man on his knees is “the highest achievement of man; his noblest activity” - Lloyd-Jones

You can access God without pretense because “the Father knows what you need before you ask him.” (v8).

II. Provision from God Right Now (v9-15):

“9 Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Jesus desires to teach us how to pray and in it we can consider his incredible provision for us:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” (v9). He is a Father God who is personal & alien all the same. He is not like us but he moves among us. He is perfectly holy yet endlessly loving.

“Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (v10). His kingdom & will weren’t accomplished in some other time, dimension, or other worldly location..

“Give us this day our daily bread” (v11). Daily needs matter to God.

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” His provision comes in the form of forgiveness. As he forgives us, we can forgive those who have wronged us.

“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (13). He provides for us by not leading us into sin, and also continuously delivering us out of the grip of it.

The Gospel:

Jesus could only say “Your kingdom come, your will be done” because of what he was about to do.

Without the resurrection, there would be no kingdom, which means there would be no rescue.

Without the resurrection, there would be no accessibility and provision for right now!

Jesus broke the dividing wall of hostility that sin caused by gaining direct access to us through his incarnation, then he laid aside all that was provided for him as God and creator and sustainer, in order to provide us with full access to him every moment from here to eternity, as well as provision from him now through eternity.

HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN PHILIPPINES (UNP)

The university began as the Vigan High School (present-day I locos Sur National High School) in 1906. It opened its high school in 1927 and produced its first graduates in 1931, when it evolved as the I locos Sur Trade School. They were both in Vigan town. Two of the buildings still exist: one being used as a warehouse for a construction supply firm, the other is the location of the Vigan City Trade Center. President Manuel Luis Quezon converted the I locos Sur Trade School in 1941 through the help of Assemblyman Benito T. Soliven and Governor Pedro Sing son Reyes.

However, World War II halted its implementation. In 1951 the I locos Sur Trade School became the Northern Luzon School of Arts and Trades (NLSAT) by virtue of Republic Act 547. However, Republic Act 2700, or the General Appropriations Act of 1960, converted it back to I locos Sur School of Arts and Trades (ISSAT). It proved temporary: In June 19, 1965, then-Congressman Flora S. Crisologo authored Republic Act 4449.

It was signed into law at the Philippine Embassy in Roppoing, Tokyo, Japan, converting ISSAT into the University of Northern Philippines. Crisologois recognized as the founder of the university. The Condon Community College (CCC) was incorporated into the university in 1989 through Republic Act 6744, through the efforts of then-Congressman Eric D. Sing son. It acted as a semi-autonomous unit. Despite this semi-autonomous status, CCC was split from the university by virtue of Republic Act 10085, also by Sing son, to become the Northern Luzon Polytechnic State College in 2010.
