Artflow’s take on: The Hour of Magic main characters

Snippet from Ch. 20:

The group continued on through dusk-soaked trees. Conversation slowed as the oppressive effects of the weald grew and tensions rose. Even the most amicable chatter only served to emphasize the growing distortion of senses. Even when shielded, one naturally resisted raising one’s voice the deeper they went into in an abyssal weald. 

As much as Jaisse had wished to soothe the group’s unease, she found herself shooting an arm out.

“What is it, Warden?” Salma asked.

Jaisse’s eyes were fixed on movement roughly twenty yards in front of them. A long, massive creature with dark hazel fur was coiled around a half fallen tree. It nearly blended with the forest, and had it not moved, she might never have spotted it. She felt the tension leave her shoulders when it shifted once more, and two downy paws hung down.

“It’s a stoat,” Jaisse said in a voice of calm, finding herself smiling as she watched the elongated weasel stretch out, basking in the small pinpricks of daylight as if it had been lying in a warm sun spot. 

“That’s the biggest stoat I’ve ever seen!” Godric hissed. “Is it a monster?!”

“Technically, yes. I think this one is just big. Most monsters with weasel ancestors are either really big, really fast, or both. I’ve never heard of one attacking humans.”

“There are monsters that don’t attack?” Godric breathed. 

“During the Hour, animals utilized magic purely on instinct. Most of them merely willed better chances at survival. That doesn’t always translate as being more dangerous.”

“It’s kind of cute,” Fahad said as Salma was already sketching it.

“It kind of is,” Godric chuckled. “Commander, are you seeing this?”

Jaisse turned to see Krieve had gone still, frown heavy, recoiled in the saddle. His horse’s ears were back, mirroring the unease of its rider. Krieve did a stiff double take when he noted the eyes of the group on him. “Yes, that’s….that sure is something.”
