tbf for all its mess, "here's a lewd ostracon" - "aaaand here's three egyptologists criticising the British Museum's given translation of the inscription" is one of the most tumblr posts we’ve made recently

#in fairness no one's probably looked at it since it was aquired in 1912 #there's an enormous backlog of untranslated and unpublished ostraca that we're just... never going to catch up on #not in the least bc we keep digging up new ones #but also because there's only few egyptologists #though to be QUITE honest i'd be down to do the work and publish a few hundred of these #I don't necessarily need an extensive Egyptological career because I'm not entirely suited to academics? #but if you pay me a living wage to translate and publish these babies so that the knowledge is available to others I'd be so down #anyway back to the ostracon in question - both parkinson (1999) and demarée (2002) included it in a publication #and because I can't imagine either of those looking at the BM-given inscription and going ''aye legit'' i'm trying to hunt down those pubs #INSTEAD OF WRITING LIKE I SHOULD BE I GUESS #eh who am I kidding I don't have the brain space to write right now anyway might as well do something tangentially related
