Janus grabs Adam’s arm and pulls him down the street and toward the parade. The juvvie that they had waved to earlier noticed that they were coming and their eyes lit up before running out to meet them halfway.

“Hey there!! Want ta leave?” they ask, raising their heavily accented voice over the sounds of shouts and shattering. They run a hand through their bright blue hair, looking between Janus and Adam with twinkling eyes.

Adam extends his hand, an excited smile forming on his face, “Yes!! Yes, we do!! I’m Adam, and this is AJ!!” He winks at me- he didn’t reveal my actual name and thank witch for that because who knows what they might do.

They shake Adam’s hand firmly, a smile of their own forming on their face, “Pleasure ta meet you two, especially you AJ. I’m BJ- it stands for Blue J, getcha minds outta the gutter, witch.” he says, as Adam lets out a snort.

“Well, I guess we need some kick-ass names too, huh…” Janus says, looking over BJ’s shoulder the marvel at the sea so color and destruction. “This is a homecoming parade?”

“Yep!” BJ says, the grin growing wider, “We have a record number going out today, and I guess we can add two more to tha count, huh?” 

“Hey Beej!!” A younger girl with curly hair struts up to them, “I used all my color bombs, you got any more- oh hello!!” 

“I sure do, Fatal, and this is Adam and AJ, they’re gonna be hoppin on our train,” BJ says, unclipping four small, black cylinders from his belt and handing them to Fatal.

“Oh, really?? That’s great!! Come on you guys,” she says, handing two of the cylinders to Adam, and the other two to Janus, “you gotta leave your mark.” 

Janus looks over at Adam, and with a stellar grin, Adam launches one of his packages into the nearby post office. It explodes on impact, a bright green splits out and settles on the window. Adam gives a triumphant laugh, before intertwining his hand in Janus’ and pulling him along to the moving spectacle, with Janus struggling to keep up. He spots Fatal from through the crowd and squeezes Adam’s hand to get his attention. Janus flicks his head in her direction, and Adam nods in understanding. As color bombs go off above their heads and a deep rumble of moving people shakes them, Janus spots his office across the street. He launches one of his faux grenades, and it breaks the window in a colorful display of red and pink, and a few of the people near Janus cheer him on, namely Adam. Janus turns to him, raises his last cylinder, and points to a sign that reads ‘Every life is better with Better Living’. Adam’s face splits into a mischievous grin and mouths ‘On three’. Janus nods and squeezes Adams’s hand three times before hurling his bomb and the sign. Both his and Adam’s hit at the same time, they explode into brilliant yellows and deep blues, smothering the bland white and black in color. Janus turns back to Adam, who’s looking around, laughing wistfully, and he realizes just how much Adam means to him. It’s funny to think that just this morning he had failed to cook breakfast, but now he was destroying government property with… with Adam. Janus’ free hand goes to cup Adam’s face, and Adam stiffens up a little bit, unprepared for the sudden act of gentleness, before practically melting into Janus’ hand. Janus’ other hand leaves Adam’s and rests on the back of his neck. In one fluid movement, Adam wraps his arm around Janus’ neck and kisses him, gentle and tender, as if he was made of glass and could shatter at any moment. A zing shoots through Janus, making him feel lightheaded. He hasn’t felt this level of emotion in a long, long time, but he likes it. He likes feeling this way, with Adam in his arms, he never wants to lose this feeling. He’s so overwhelmed by it all, the cheers of the people around him hardly seem to register. He can’t help but smile against the kiss, thinking of the image this must produce. A kiss under exploding colors and rioting people. It’s everything Janus never knew he needed. But he did know that he needed Adam. Janus pulls away and buries his face in Adam’s neck, the sounds of the parade began to flood back in. 

“Hey, Janus… what does this mean?” Adam whispers into Janus’ hair.

“I don’t know,” Janus replies, drawing back to look at Adam, “I guess it means that we’ll be together out there. Now come on, we don’t want to get left behind.” 

The rest of the journey was a blur, and all Janus was aware of was Adam’s hand in his. He wasn’t even aware of the gates until they pass under them, Adam’s hand gripping his tighter.

Janus turns around to see Fatal and BJ hugging, with another bright green-haired girl, and they wave to them, and they wave back, and Janus and Adam walk out into the zones. 

Adam stops in his tracks and stares at Janus, wide-eyed, before breathing out, “My name… Rusty Rainbow. I just got that. Like- I- I just though of that.”

“Really?? Dude, that’s amazing!! Rusty Rainbow...” Janus repeats, “I’ve always like explosions- maybe I could use Explosion Commotion?”

“Oh my which, that’s great. I’ll just call X, and you call me Rust?”

“How ‘bout I call you my boyfriend?”

“JANUS I SWEAR-” Rust goes completely red, which X didn’t think was possible, but they’re both laughing anyway. “Ya big goof. Let’s go find somewhere to stay for the night.”
