Road Dogs: Metallica on Tour
Metallica‘s first ever gig took place at Radio City in Anaheim, California in March 1982. Their set list included primarily covers with only two original songs, “Hit the Lights” and “Fight Fire with Fire.” They did Savage’s ‘Let It Loose,’ Blitzkrieg’s ‘Blitzkrieg,’ Sweet Savage’s ‘Killing Time’ and four Diamond Head tracks. For diehard fans, this original lineup did not include Cliff Burton as of yet, but instead Ron McGovney. They eventually asked him to leave the group because the guitarist did not contribute anything of value. Another good reason came in the fact that Dave Mustaine fought with him repeatedly. James Hetfield would later say this about that show. “There were a lot of people there, maybe 200, because we had all my school friends and all Lars’ and Ron’s and Dave’s buddies. I was really nervous and a little uncomfortable without a guitar, and then during the first song Dave broke a string. It seemed to take him an eternity to change it and I was standing there really embarrassed. We were really disappointed afterwards. But there were never as many people at the following shows as there were at that first one.”
Metallica’s second and third show took place at the Whiskey a Gogo in Los Angeles. This venue would be where Hetfield and Lars Ulrich first heard future bassist Cliff Burton and his band Trauma. More recently, Ulrich revealed diary entries related to Metallica’s appearances there. "No sound check. Sound was awful. Played great myself, but the band as a whole sucked. Went down OK." The group opened for Saxon, who the drummer had met six months prior after sneaking backstage during one of their shows. After the concert, the monitor engineer asked Ulrich if he had ever heard of Diamondhead. “Of course, we have, we just played a bunch of their songs!" As it turned out, the crew member was only joking about Diamond Head. He would later go on to work for Metallica in the same position for 22 years.
On April 16, 1983 Metallica played its first show with new guitarist Kirk Hammett at the Showplace in Dover, New Jersey. They had begun recording their debut album Kill ‘Em All in Rochester, New York at that time. The set list included all original material that would land on that first album making up nine songs. Hammett had replaced Dave Mustaine, who held quite a bit of ill will towards him for years claiming in 1985 that Kirk ripped off all his guitar riffs, which got him noticed in the metal community. In defense of Hammett, he was simply trying not to make waves in his new group as Ulrich and Hetfield had definitely decided not to cut any contributions from Mustaine.
On March 5, 1983 Metallica played its first show with Cliff Burton at The Stone in San Francisco, who had replaced Ron McGovney. In 2018, a recording of the show came to light online, which you can listen to on YouTube. The lineup still included Dave Mustain as well taking place a month before the other band members would fire him. They performed 12 songs that night essentially previewing everything to be included on their debut album. At that time, James Hetfield was still struggling over whether he should sing lead. On the recording, you can tell why this became the case as his voice sounds incredibly scratchy with absolutely no technique whatsoever. The show also became memorable as a Cliff Burton debuted the future track, “Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth).”
Cliff Burton played his last show was Metallica in Stockholm, Sweden in September 1986 before his tragic passing. A few years ago, Metallica released a boxed set of rarities for their album, Master of Puppets, which included a recording of that final show. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett talked about their memories of that last concert with Cliff. Ulrich noted, “We played the show in Stockholm, and it went incredibly well. I think it may have been a rare case where we actually played an additional song that wasn’t on the set list, because the show was so good. That’s not something we did a lot then or now. So there was a good vibe.” Hammett would say this in the same interview, “It was significant because it was the first show where James played guitar again (Wrist Injury). He strapped on a guitar and was able to play the encore; I think it was “Blitzkrieg” or something. But I remember the five of us, including John Marshall, being really stoked James was back and playing and looking like was gonna make a pretty healthy recovery. I distinctly remember that show being good, and the feeling when we got offstage was really great and positive and forward-looking. Like, “Great, James is back in and it won’t be long ’til we’re back to our old selves again.”
In November 1986, Jason Newsted would play his first show with Metallica at the Country Club in Reseda, California. He did so in front of a sparse crowd because it had been a secret show for the group Metal Church. Newsted had played with the band for only a short time during rehearsals for the next album. James Hetfield introduced Newsted for the very first time in this way. “Welcome to the very, very secret Metallica gig that every fucker knows about! Here’s the new fucker right over here man, this is the guy… Jason Newsted, we fucking love him, man, so make him feel at home, alright? I want to have some fun tonight.” Their set list would consist of 14 songs from their first three album releases.
In the summer of 1992, Metallica decided to perform a few dates with Guns ‘N Roses. The hype for these shows represented the tour of the year, but the show in Montreal turned into a tragic affair. A pyrotechnic accident occurred as they performed “Fade To Black” causing second and third degree burns on half of singer James Hetfield's body. He recalled the incident, “I'm burnt – all my arm, my hand completely, down to the bone. The side of my face, hair's gone. Part of my back. ... I watched the skin just rising, things going wrong." Jason Newsted would remember that Hetfield looked like the Toxic Avenger from his vantage point. The group immediately cut the show short, so the singer could receive medical attention. He would later say that during the trip to the hospital a road crew member bumped his burnt hand leading him to punch the guy in his “nuts.” For fans still at the show, things only got worse as Guns ‘N Roses delayed getting on stage for two hours. Axl Rose probably only sang for 20 minutes before cutting his night short. GNR Had known what had happened to Hetfield, but they still phoned it in anyway. After that, 2000 people rioted in protest followed by several arrests. This night would lead to great animosity between the two groups for years continuing to this day, but it should be noted that Metallica acted professionally completing the tour with an injured Hetfield. Slash of Guns N’ Roses would later talk about the tour being a financial disaster for them. “Metallica was earning the exact same paycheck as we were every night but while they pocketed the whole thing, we were blowing 80 percent both on union dues for all of the overtime we cost ourselves going on late and on these stupid theme parties. It was just bad." Axl had spent extravagantly on backstage parties in an effort to impress members of Metallica.
In April 1999, Metallica recorded two performances on successive nights with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra led by Michael Kamen. The idea for such a concert had first come up when they worked with the composer on the Black Album song, “Nothing Else Matters.” He had approached them about such a collaboration, but never heard anything until years later receiving a phone call from Lars Ulrich. They filmed the live show at Berkeley Community Theater in San Francisco as Kamen had written additional material to supplement Metallica’s arrangements. The band also released two new songs specifically for the show, “No Leaf Clover” and “Human.” According to James Hetfield, This idea of combining heavy metal and classical music was originally an idea brought up by Cliff Burton, who had a strong background in both. One can see this throughout Metallica’s songwriting in their early years as the bassist relied on melody and instrumental qualities found in classical compositions like his favorite one, Johan Sebastian Bach. S&M would be released as a concert film and an album, with the latter reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1991, Metallica would play a concert in Russia that has become the stuff of legends because 1.6 million people watched it in person. The highlight of the show came when they played “Enter Sandman” as one could see Russian military personnel rocking out just as hard as anybody else. One must note that they were not the only band there that day as other artists included the Black Crowes, Queensryche, Motley Crue, and AC/DC. The Monsters of Rock Festival would only occur this one year in what would become the former Soviet Union. Motley Crue had played one of the early versions of the festival in 1984, but ironically Metallica had surpassed them as a more popular headliner by this time.
In August 2020, Metallica became the first rock act to perform a pre-recorded concert for Encore Live’s drive-in series. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, live concerts were canceled all over the world, so artists like Blake Shelton and Garth Brooks participated in this drive-in movie concert experience. Tickets to view this at your local drive-in cost $115 for up to six people per car. The show took place at an undisclosed location near their home in San Rafael, California.

Life Changes || Paul Bissonnette
Tumblr media
Summary: It’s crazy how quickly your life can change...one minute you’re a struggling personal injury lawyer and the next you’re working for one of the hottest sports podcasts to supplement your income. A new job and the end of a long-term relationship was just the beginning for Leigh Thompson when it comes to life changes. Thankfully she has the one and only Paul Bissonnette at her side to help her handle them all.
Authors Note: Rewriting my Biz series with an OC so that I can give it a little bit more depth and write out the things that popped into my head but seemed too specific for a y/n imagine. In addition to updating the chapters I’m adding in all the social media content [located at end] (which is super labor intensive) so I hope you enjoy it. Note in this world, Spittin Chiclets has separated from Barstool Sports.

“Great things never came from comfort zones.”
My head was in my phone as I read my daily motivational email while stepping off the plane in Boston. In a way, it almost seemed as if the writers knew exactly what it was that I needed to hear. Because this…this was the exact opposite of my comfort zone. Managing the business operations and events schedule for a popular hockey podcast was not what I’d imagined doing with my law degree.
But I wanted to start up my own practice, a practice in which I only got paid if I could find clients and win their cases. So far, that wasn’t going so well as far as paying the bills was concerned. So when a fellow lawyer had gotten me an interview for this part-time gig, I couldn’t turn it down. It seemed like something fun and different and I’d just been dumped because my ex had ‘met someone else’ so I really had nothing to lose.
Now, two weeks after I’d started work, I was arriving in Boston to meet the hosts of the podcast and their producer in person. Of course, the trip was also for a meeting for a sponsorship deal but I was trying not to think about that because it would be my first big test as their business manager and I didn’t want to fuck it up.
It was a Wednesday and the guys were in the process of recording the podcast when my flight was scheduled to arrive so I hailed a cab and checked myself into the hotel. They’d already made plans for us to go out tonight. Clubs were not my thing but again, “comfort zones.” After hanging my suit up for the next day’s meeting, I climbed onto the hotel bed to work on writing a complaint for my newest client’s case. Hopefully, the whole thing wouldn’t go much farther than that and we could reach a settlement but right now the insurance company wasn’t cooperating, so this was the next step in the process. By the time I finished, it was time to eat and then get ready to go out and so I ordered dinner and ate while watching something random on tv.
Around seven, I pulled out the clothes I’d brought for tonight, a red sparkly tank and dark jeans with a black leather jacket and red flats. Yes, I was going to be dwarfed by these men but heels weren’t my thing either and I’d rather not trip and fall and embarrass myself in front of them. I’d talked with each of them on the phone a few times but this was the first time I was meeting any of them in person and so my anxiety was high.
Quickly doing my hair and makeup, I grabbed my phone, wallet, and hotel key and stepped out into the hall. The five of us were meeting in the lobby at eight and it was already about ten til. When I stepped out of the elevator into the lobby, I looked around but didn’t spot any of the guys I was meeting. Well, at least I wasn’t late.
Leaning against one of the pillars in the lobby I checked social media on my phone once more, Snapchatting my sister like I did every night so my mother knew I was alive. Looking up from my phone after snapping a picture of the lobby, I spotted Ryan Whitney looking around. Waving just a bit, I smiled when he nodded and approached, quickly introducing himself. It wasn’t like I didn’t know who he was, I’d watched him play for the Penguins when I was still just a teenager, but the familiarity of the introductory process helped put me at ease.
“How long have you been down here?” He asked hands shoved into his pockets.
“About five minutes,” I responded with a small shrug and after a moment he nodded, seemingly impressed. “Hey, when I’m supposed to be somewhere by a certain time I make sure I am. I hate being late. I am not one of those women that are never ready on time.”
“Teach that to my wife please.” He declared his tone light and teasing. When another man approached calling Whitney’s name, I glanced over my shoulder and mentally cataloged the man as Mike Grinnell, the show’s producer. Of all of the men I was now working with, he was the closest to me in age. After he greeted Ryan Whitney he turned his attention to me.
“You must be Leigh. Nice to finally put a face to the name.”
“I would say the same but I grew up in Pittsburgh and I’ve followed the show for a while so I think I have faces down.” I tried to keep my comment as light as possible while reaching out a hand to shake his. Tonight was either going to go well or be really awkward and I was silently praying for the former. Thankfully, before the current situation could get awkward, the other two members of your group, RA and Paul Bissonnette made their way into the lobby. Introductions with them were brief because they were all eager to get an uber and head out to the lounge they’d picked.
During the car ride, the guys pretty much conversed among themselves so I took the time to observe their personalities when there was no reason to front and they were just being themselves. Stepping into the lounge was like entering another world and the five of us quickly made our way to an empty table. Settling into the booth, I looked around, taking in how the level of the music was quiet enough that I could actually hear myself think and how it was crowded but not overly so.
Whitney offered to buy the first round of drinks and when I asked for water they all looked at me like I was crazy.
“What? I’m thirsty. I haven’t had anything to drink all day because I got caught up in work. Last I checked alcohol doesn’t really help with hydration. Plus I’m just not a big drinker…” I did drink socially but I’d never been drunk and I was already worried about making a fool of myself. Alcohol certainly wouldn’t make me any less self-conscious. Actually, it would probably make me make a bigger fool of myself. Thankfully the guys decided to pick their battles and didn’t pressure me and when Whitney handed me a bottle of water I thanked him before taking a sip.
Once the guys had drinks, it didn’t take long before they started asking me a million questions. I’d known this was coming, after all, I was the newbie to the group and if I was going to be working closely with them it was probably best that they get to know me. At the beginning the questions were mild, asking about my schooling and aspirations practicing law. I explained what had caused me to go back to school for my law degree and how my business management degree hadn’t exactly paid off the way I had planned. When I told them about my time working for my undergraduate university’s athletic communications office, and spending a semester as an events marketing intern for the Steelers, it was clear that they were a little thrown off by the extent of my background in sports but that they were impressed at the same time.
Of course, after that, it was unsurprising when a bunch of hockey guys and former hockey players transitioned into talking hockey like they hadn’t just done it for hours earlier in the day. It was also unsurprising, at least to me, when as a lifelong hockey fan I threw my own opinions into the mix. I’d been attending Penguins games since I was three or four years old thanks to my dad’s company seats and hockey had gotten me through some tough times, including law school. That led to the good-natured teasing from the guys about which players I found attractive and after insisting that we’d be there all night if they really wanted to know I smirked and made my way to the bar for another bottle of water. While I was a fan of the game for many reasons that didn’t have to do with player attractiveness, I also wasn’t blind.
When the sports conversation ended upon my return to the table, the more prying questions began. I refused to answer anything that made me completely uncomfortable, but I was forced to explain how I had just gotten out of an eight-month relationship and how my ex had been a total jerk about it. Even surrounded by men, there was sympathy as to the fact that he’d just shown up at my door and ended things. No fanfare. No signal that it had been coming. It had been a long-distance relationship but it had seemed like things were going well and then it was just over. It sucked because he was the first man I’d truly had feelings for and it felt like I’d wasted eight months of my life, but the wounds weren’t quite so fresh a few weeks later and ultimately I was going to be okay.
Around 11 o’clock, I felt the fatigue of the flight and the exhaustion from being social starting to take over so I decided to head back to the hotel. It didn’t seem like the guys were ready to leave yet but I was confident enough to call myself an uber. Sliding out of the booth I pulled my phone out of my pocket.
“Not to be even more of a spoilsport but I think I’m going to call an uber back to the hotel. We’ve got the meeting in the morning and I’m exhausted.” RA, Whitney, and Grinnell just nodded and murmured goodnight. When I turned to say goodnight to Biz, I found him sliding out after me and shoving his hands in his pockets.
“I’m gonna head out too.” He declared.
“You don’t have to…I’ll be fine on my own. I’m a big girl.” I insisted worried that he felt obligated to cut his night short in order to protect me.
“I’m not saying you aren’t or that you can’t. But I’m ready to go to bed too so we might as well share an uber.” Throwing my hands up in a gesture that said ‘fine whatever,’ I finished ordering the ride before stepping out of the lounge and onto the sidewalk. In the cold March Boston air, I couldn’t help but yawn, running my fingers through my hair. It was definitely time to get back to the hotel, take the makeup off, change into pajamas and just chill.
The ride back was quiet, the two of us focused on our own phones. I’d gained the entire crew as Instagram followers tonight and to ebb the confusion of anyone paying attention I added my new job title to my Instagram bio before posting a picture I’d taken tonight. I could feel Biz’s eyes on me on and off and when we got back to the hotel, he reached out a hand to help me out of the uber.
“Aren’t you going to follow me back?” He asked while the two of us were waiting for the elevator.
“Only if I unfollow you just to follow you again...” I declared biting back a laugh when he looked down at me slightly confused. “Is it really that shocking that I would have followed you before tonight?” A soft ‘guess not’ left his mouth and I rolled my eyes before stepping onto the elevator and pressing the button for my floor. He was one above me and so when the elevator stopped I murmured a ‘goodnight’ before quietly making my way back to my room.
After changing, I settled into bed and set my alarms for the morning before turning the bedside light out to go to sleep. In spite of my fears, tonight had gone pretty well and I actually had fun hanging with those guys. This job was looking to be a change for the better.

Most people who read my articles and e-books know me as a science guy who likes to quote studies and apply research to everyday problems such as weight loss, bodybuilding, and other health/fitness related topics. However, sometimes you have to step back from the science and look at the big picture to help bring people back into focus, so they can see the forest for the trees, so to speak.
For most people reading this article, finding an effective diet that works most of the time must seem as complicated as nuclear physics. It's not, but there are a bewildering number of choices for diets out there. High fat or no fat? High carbohydrate or no carbohydrate? Low protein or high protein? To make matters worse, there are a million variations and combinations to the above diet scenarios to add to the confusion. It seems endless and causes many people to throw up their hands in frustration and give up. In this article I will attempt to change all that.
There are some general guidelines, rules of thumb, and ways of viewing a diet program that will allow you to decide, once and for all, if it's the right diet for you. You may not always like what I have to say, and you should be under no illusions this is another quick fix, "lose 100 lbs. in 20 days," guide of some sort. However, if you are sick and tired of being confused, tired of taking the weight off only to put it back on, and tired of wondering how to take the first steps to deciding the right diet for you that will result in permanent weight loss, then this is the article that could change your life...
Does your diet pass "The Test"?
What is the number one reason diets fail long term; above all else? The number one reason is...drum roll...a lack of long term compliance. The numbers don't lie; the vast majority of people who lose weight will regain it - and often exceed what they lost. You knew that already didn't you?
Yet, what are you doing to avoid it? Here's another reality check: virtually any diet you pick which follows the basic concept of "burning" more calories then you consume - the well accepted "calories in calories out" mantra - will cause you to lose weight. To some degree, they all work: Atkins-style, no carb diets, low fat high carb diets, all manner of fad diets - it simply does not matter in the short term.
If your goal is to lose some weight quickly, then pick one and follow it. I guarantee you will lose some weight. Studies generally find any of the commercial weight loss diets will get approximately the same amount of weight off after 6 months to a year. For example, a recent study found the Atkins' Diet, Slim-Fast plan, Weight Watchers Pure Points program, and Rosemary Conley's Eat Yourself Slim diet, were all equally effective. (1)
Other studies comparing other popular diets have come to essentially the same conclusions. For example, a study that compared the Atkins diet, the Ornish diet, Weight Watchers, and The Zone Diet, found them to be essentially the same in their ability to take weight off after one year. (2)
Recall what I said about the number one reason diets fail, which is a lack of compliance. The lead researcher of this recent study stated:
"Our trial found that adherence level rather than diet type was the primary predictor of weight loss"(3)
Translated, it's not which diet they chose per se, but their ability to actually stick to a diet that predicted their weight loss success. I can just see the hands going up now, "but Will, some diets must be better than others, right?" Are some diets better then others? Absolutely. Some diets are healthier then others, some diets are better at preserving lean body mass, some diets are better at suppressing appetite - there are many differences between diets. However, while most of the popular diets will work for taking weight off, what is abundantly clear is that adhering to the diet is the most important aspect for keeping the weight off long term.
What is a diet?
A diet is a short term strategy to lose weight. Long term weight loss is the result of an alteration in lifestyle. We are concerned with life long weight management, not quick fix weight loss here. I don't like the term diet, as it represents a short term attempt to lose weight vs. a change in lifestyle. Want to lose a bunch of weight quickly? Heck, I will give you the information on how to do that here and now for no charge.
For the next 90 to 120 days eat 12 scrambled egg whites, one whole grapefruit, and a gallon of water twice a a day. You will lose plenty of weight. Will it be healthy? Nope. Will the weight stay off once you are done with this diet and are then forced to go back to your "normal" way of eating? Not a chance. Will the weight you lose come from fat or will it be muscle, water, bone, and (hopefully!) some fat? The point being, there are many diets out there that are perfectly capable of getting weight off you, but when considering any eating plan designed to lose weight, you must ask yourself:
"Is this a way of eating I can follow long term?"
Which brings me to my test: I call it the "Can I eat that way for the rest of my life?" Test. I know, it does not exactly roll off your tongue, but it gets the point across.
The lesson here is: any nutritional plan you pick to lose weight must be part of a lifestyle change you will be able to follow - in one form or another - forever. That is, if it's not a way of eating you can comply with indefinitely, even after you get to your target weight, then it's worthless.
Thus, many fad diets you see out there are immediately eliminated, and you don't have to worry about them. The question is not whether the diet is effective in the short term, but if the diet can be followed indefinitely as a lifelong way of eating. Going from "their" way of eating back to "your" way of eating after you reach your target weight is a recipe for disaster and the cause of the well established yo-yo dieting syndrome. Bottom line: there are no short cuts, there is no free lunch, and only a commitment to a lifestyle change is going to keep the fat off long term. I realize that's not what most people want to hear, but it's the truth, like it or not.
The statistics don't lie: getting the weight off is not the hardest part, keeping the weight off is! If you take a close look at the many well known fad/commercial diets out there, and you are honest with yourself, and apply my test above, you will find most of them no longer appeal to you as they once did. It also brings me to an example that adds additional clarity: If you have diet A that will cause the most weight loss in the shortest amount of time but is unbalanced and essentially impossible to follow long term vs. diet B, which will take the weight off at a slower pace, but is easier to follow, balanced, healthy, and something you can comply with year after year, which is superior? If diet A gets 30 lbs off you in 30 days, but by next year you have gained back all 30 lbs, but diet B gets 20 lbs off you in the next 3 months with another 20 lbs 3 months after that and the weight stays off by the end of that year, which is the better diet?
If you don't know the answer to those questions, you have totally missed the point of this article and the lesson it's trying to teach you, and are set up for failure. Go back and read this section again...By default, diet B is superior.
Teach a man to Fish...
A well known Chinese Proverb is - Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
This expression fits perfectly with the next essential step in how to decide what eating plan you should follow to lose weight permanently. Will the diet plan you are considering teach you how to eat long term, or does it spoon-feed you information? Will the diet rely on special bars, shakes, supplements or pre-made foods they supply?
Let's do another diet A vs. diet B comparison. Diet A is going to supply you with their foods, as well as their special drink or bars to eat, and tell you exactly when to eat them. You will lose - say - 30 lbs in two months. Diet B is going to attempt to help you learn which foods you should eat, how many calories you need to eat, why you need to eat them, and generally attempt to help teach you how to eat as part of a total lifestyle change that will allow you to make informed decisions about your nutrition. Diet B causes a slow steady weight loss of 8 -10 lbs per month for the next 6 months and the weight stays off because you now know how to eat properly.
Recall the Chinese proverb. Both diets will assist you to lose weight. Only one diet, however, will teach you how to be self-reliant after your experience is over. Diet A is easier, to be sure, and causes faster weight loss than diet B, and diet B takes longer and requires some thinking and learning on your part. However, when diet A is over, you are right back where you started and have been given no skills to fish. Diet companies don't make their profits by teaching you to fish, they make their money by handing you a fish so you must rely on them indefinitely or come back to them after you gain all the weight back.
Thus, diet B is superior for allowing you to succeed where other diets failed, with knowledge gained that you can apply long term. Diet programs that attempt to spoon feed you a diet without any attempt to teach you how to eat without their help and/or rely on their shakes, bars, cookies, or pre-made foods, is another diet you can eliminate from your list of choices.
Diet plans that offer weight loss by drinking their product for several meals followed by a "sensible dinner;" diets that allow you to eat their special cookies for most meals along with their pre-planned menu; or diets that attempt to have you eating their bars, drink, or pre-made meals, are of the diet A variety covered above. They're easy to follow but destined for failure, long term. They all fail the "Can I eat that way for the rest of my life?" test, unless you really think you can eat cookies and shakes for the rest of your life...Bottom line here is, if the nutritional approach you use to lose weight, be it from a book, a class, a clinic, or an e-book, does not teach you how to eat, it's a loser for long term weight loss and it should be avoided.
The missing link for long term weight loss
We now make our way to another test to help you choose a nutrition program for long term weight loss, and it does not actually involve nutrition. The missing link for long term weight loss is exercise. Exercise is the essential component of long term weight loss. Many diet programs do not contain an exercise component, which means they are losers for long term weight loss from the very start. Any program that has its focus on weight loss but does not include a comprehensive exercise plan is like buying a car without tires, or a plane without wings. People who have successfully kept the weight off overwhelmingly have incorporated exercise into their lives, and the studies that look at people who have successfully lost weight and kept it off invariably find these people were consistent with their diet and exercise plans. (4)
I am not going to list all the benefits of regular exercise here, but regular exercise has positive effects on your metabolism, allows you to eat more calories yet still be in a calorie deficit, and can help preserve lean body mass (LBM) which is essential to your health and metabolism. The many health benefits of regular exercise are well known, so I won't bother adding them here. The bottom line here is, (a) if you have any intentions of getting the most from your goal of losing weight and (b) plan to keep it off long term, regular exercise must be an integral part of the weight loss strategy. So, you can eliminate any program, be it book, e-book, clinic, etc. that does not offer you direction and help with this essential part of long term weight loss.
Side Bar: A quick note on exercise:
Any exercise is better than no exercise. However, like diet plans, not all exercise is created equal, and many people often choose the wrong form of exercise to maximize their efforts to lose weight. For example, they will do aerobics exclusively and ignore resistance training. Resistance training is an essential component of fat loss, as it builds muscle essential to your metabolism, increases 24 hour energy expenditure, and has health benefits beyond aerobics.
The reader will also note I said fat loss above not weight loss. Though I use the term 'weight loss' throughout this article, I do so only because it is a familiar term most people understand. However, the true focus and goal of a properly set up nutrition and exercise plan should be on fat loss, not weight loss. A focus on losing weight, which may include a loss essential muscle, water, and even bone, as well as fat, is the wrong approach. Losing the fat and keeping the all important lean body mass (LBM), is the goal, and the method for achieving that can be found in my ebook(s) on the topic, and is beyond the scope of this article. Bottom line: the type of exercise, intensity of that exercise, length of time doing that exercise, etc., are essential variables here when attempting to lose FAT while retaining (LBM).
Psychology 101 of long term weight loss
Many diet programs out there don't address the psychological aspect of why people fail to be successful with long term weight loss. However, quite a few studies exist that have looked at just that. In many respects, the psychological aspect is the most important for long term weight loss, and probably the most underappreciated component.
Studies that compare the psychological characteristics of people who have successfully kept the weight off to people who have regained the weight, see clear differences between these two groups. For example, one study that looked at 28 obese women who had lost weight but regained the weight that they had lost, compared to 28 formerly obese women who had lost weight and maintained their weight for at least one year and 20 women with a stable weight in the healthy range, found the women who regained the weight:
o Had a tendency to evaluate self-worth in terms of weight and shape
o Had a lack of vigilance with regard to weight control
o had a dichotomous (black-and-white) thinking style
o Had the tendency to use eating to regulate mood.
The researchers concluded:
"The results suggest that psychological factors may provide some explanation as to why many people with obesity regain weight following successful weight loss."
This particular study was done on women, so it reflects some of the specific psychological issues women have - but make no mistake here - men also have their own psychological issues that can sabotage their long term weight loss efforts. (6)
Additional studies on men and women find psychological characteristics such as "having unrealistic weight goals, poor coping or problem-solving skills and low self-efficacy" often predict failure with long term weight loss. (7) On the other hand, psychological traits common to people who experienced successful long term weight loss include "...an internal motivation to lose weight, social support, better coping strategies and ability to handle life stress, self-efficacy, autonomy, assuming responsibility in life, and overall more psychological strength and stability." (8)
The main point of this section is to illustrate that psychology plays a major role in determining if people are successful with long term weight loss. If it's not addressed as part of the overall plan, it can be the factor that makes or breaks your success. This, however, is not an area most nutrition programs can adequately tackle and should not be expected to. However, the better programs do generally attempt to help with motivation, goal setting, and support. If you see yourself in the above lists from the groups that failed to maintain their weight long term, then know you will need to address those issues via counseling, support groups, etc. Don't expect any weight loss program to cover this topic adequately but do look for programs that attempt to offer support, goal setting, and resources that will keep you on track.
"There's a sucker born every minute"
So why don't you see this type of honest information about the realities of long term weight loss more often? Let's be honest here, telling the truth is not the best way to sell bars, shakes, books, supplements, and programs. Hell, if by some miracle everyone who read this article actually followed it, and sent it on to millions of other people who actually followed it, makers of said products could be in financial trouble quickly. However, they also know - as the man said - "there's a sucker born every minute," so I doubt they will be kept up at night worrying about the effects that I, or this article, will have on their business.
So let's recap what has been learned here: the big picture realities of permanent weight loss and how you can look at a weight loss program and decide for yourself if it's for you based on what has been covered above:
o Permanent weight loss is not about finding a quick fix diet, but making a commitment to life style changes that include nutrition and exercise
o Any weight loss program you choose must pass the "Can I eat that way for the rest of my life?" test,
o The weight loss program you choose should ultimately teach you how to eat and be self reliant so you can make informed long term choices about your nutrition.
o The weight loss program you choose should not leave you reliant on commercial bars, shakes, supplements, or pre-made foods, for your long term success.
o The weight loss program you choose must have an effective exercise component.
o The weight loss program you choose should attempt to help with motivation, goal setting, and support, but can't be a replacement for psychological counseling if needed.
Conclusion
I want to take this final section to add some additional points and clarity. For starters, the above advice is not for everyone. It's not intended for those who really have their nutrition dialed in, such as competitive bodybuilders and other athletes who benefit from fairly dramatic changes in their nutrition, such as 'off season' and 'pre-contest' and so on.
The article is also not intended for those with medical issues who may be on a specific diet to treat or manage a specific medical condition. The article is intended for the average person who wants to get off the Yo-Yo diet merry-go-round once and for all. As that's probably 99% of the population, it will cover millions of people.
People should also not be scared off by my "you have to eat this way forever" advice. This does not mean you will be dieting for the rest of your life and have nothing but starvation to look forward to. What it does mean, however, is you will have to learn to eat properly even after you reach your target weight and that way of eating should not be a huge departure from how you ate to lose the weight in the first place. Once you get to your target weight - and or your target bodyfat levels - you will go onto a maintenance phase which generally has more calories and choices of food, even the occasional treat, like a slice of pizza or whatever.
Maintenance diets are a logical extension of the diet you used to lose the weight, but they are not based on the diet you followed that put the weight on in the first place!
Regardless of which program you choose, use the above 'big picture' approach which will keep you on track for long term weight loss. See you in the gym!

Health News Fitness | The Big Image of Permanent Fat Burning
Lots of people that review my short articles as well as e-books know me as a science guy that likes to price estimate studies as well as use research study to day-to-day troubles such as weight management, bodybuilding, as well as other health/fitness related topics. Nonetheless, in some cases you need to step back from the science as well as look at the big image to help bring individuals back right into focus, so they can see the woodland for the trees, in a manner of speaking.
For most people reviewing this article, finding a reliable diet that works most of the time must seem as made complex as nuclear physics. It's not, but there are a bewildering number of options for diets available. High fat or no fat? High carbohydrate or no carb? Reduced healthy protein or high healthy protein? To make issues worse, there are a million variations as well as mixes to the above diet regimen scenarios to contribute to the complication. It seems limitless as well as triggers many people to throw up their hands in stress as well as give up. In this post I will certainly try to transform all that.
Health News Fitness
There are some basic guidelines, general rules, as well as methods of watching a diet program that will certainly permit you to decide, at last, if it's the ideal diet plan for you. You might not always like what I need to say, and you should be under no illusions this is one more fast fix, "shed 100 lbs. in 20 days," guide of some sort. However, if you are ill as well as tired of being puzzled, tired of taking the weight off just to place it back on, and tired of wondering exactly how to take the first steps to determining the best diet for you that will cause irreversible weight-loss, after that this is the short article that could change your life ...
Does your diet plan pass "The Test"?
What is the top factor diet regimens fall short long term; above all else? The top factor is ... drum roll ... a lack of long-term compliance. The numbers do not lie; the large bulk of people who slim down will restore it - and typically exceed what they lost. You understood that already didn't you?
Yet, what are you doing to avoid it? Here's one more reality check: virtually any kind of diet regimen you choose which follows the standard principle of "melting" much more calories after that you eat - the well accepted "calories in calories out" mantra - will certainly trigger you to slim down. To some extent, they all work: Atkins-style, no carbohydrate diet plans, reduced fat high carb diets, all manner of crash diet - it merely does not matter in the short-term.
If your goal is to lose some weight swiftly, then select one and also follow it. I assure you will certainly shed some weight. Studies typically find any of the industrial weight reduction diets will obtain approximately the very same amount of weight off after 6 months to a year. As an example, a recent research study located the Atkins' Diet regimen, Slim-Fast plan, Weight Watchers Pure Details program, and Rosemary Conley's Consume Yourself Slim diet regimen, were all just as reliable. (1 )
Health News
Other studies contrasting other popular diet regimens have involved essentially the exact same verdicts. For instance, a study that compared the Atkins diet, the Ornish diet, Weight Watchers, and The Area Diet plan, discovered them to be basically the very same in their capability to take weight off after one year. (2 )
Recall what I said about the top reason diet plans fall short, which is an absence of conformity. The lead researcher of this recent study specified:
" Our test located that adherence degree rather than diet regimen type was the main forecaster of weight-loss"( 3 )
Equated, it's not which diet they chose in itself, however their capacity to really adhere to a diet that anticipated their weight loss success. I can simply see the hands going up now, "yet Will, some diets must be better than others, right?" Are some diets much better then others? Absolutely. Some diet plans are much healthier after that others, some diets are better at maintaining lean body mass, some diet plans are much better at suppressing appetite - there are many differences between diet regimens. Nonetheless, while most of the preferred diets will certainly help taking weight off, what is perfectly clear is that sticking to the diet is the most vital facet for maintaining the weight off long term.
  What is a diet regimen?
A diet regimen is a short term strategy to lose weight. Long-term weight-loss is the result of a modification in lifestyle. We are concerned with life long weight monitoring, not quick fix fat burning below. I do not like the term diet regimen, as it represents a short-term effort to reduce weight vs. a change in lifestyle. Intend to lose a lot of weight quickly? Hell, I will certainly offer you the information on just how to do that present moment for no charge.
For the next 90 to 120 days consume 12 scrambled egg whites, one entire grapefruit, and a gallon of water two times a day. You will certainly shed a lot of weight. Will it be healthy and balanced? Nope. Will the weight stay off once you are finished with this diet plan and are after that required to return to your "normal" means of consuming? Not a chance. Will the weight you shed come from fat or will certainly it be muscle mass, water, bone, and (with any luck!) some fat? The factor being, there are several diets around that are completely with the ability of obtaining weight off you, but when taking into consideration any type of consuming plan developed to slim down, you should ask on your own:
" Is this a means of consuming I can follow long-term?"
Which brings me to my test: I call it the "Can I eat by doing this for the remainder of my life?" Test. I recognize, it does not specifically roll off your tongue, but it understands throughout.
The lesson right here is: any dietary strategy you pick to slim down should become part of a way of life modification you will certainly be able to follow - in one form or another - forever. That is, if it's not a method of eating you can follow forever, also after you reach your target weight, then it wears.
Therefore, several fad diets you see out there are right away eliminated, and also you do not need to stress over them. The question is not whether the diet plan is effective in the short-term, however if the diet regimen can be followed indefinitely as a long-lasting way of eating. Going from "their" way of consuming back to "your" method of eating after you reach your target weight is a dish for catastrophe and also the cause of the well developed yo-yo dieting syndrome. Bottom line: there are no short cuts, there is no free lunch, and also only a commitment to a lifestyle modification is going to keep the fat off long term. I recognize that's not what most individuals intend to hear, but it's the reality, like it or otherwise.
The data don't lie: obtaining the weight off is not the hardest component, keeping the weight off is! If you take a close look at the several well known fad/commercial diets available, as well as you are straightforward with yourself, and apply my test above, you will locate the majority of them no more appeal to you as they when did. It additionally brings me to an instance that includes additional clearness: If you have diet regimen A that will create one of the most weight management in the shortest amount of time yet is out of balance as well as basically impossible to comply with long term vs. diet regimen B, which will take the weight off at a slower pace, but is easier to follow, balanced, healthy and balanced, and something you can follow time after time, which is superior? If diet plan A gets 30 pounds off you in thirty day, however by next year you have obtained back all 30 pounds, yet diet plan B obtains 20 lbs off you in the next 3 months with another 20 lbs 3 months afterwards as well as the weight stays off by the end of that year, which is the far better diet?
If you do not understand the response to those concerns, you have actually completely misreaded of this write-up as well as the lesson it's trying to instruct you, and also are established for failure. Return and review this area once more ... By default, diet regimen B transcends.
Teach a male to Fish ...
A well known Chinese Saying is - Give a man a fish as well as you feed him for a day. Show a man to fish and also you feed him for a life time.
This expression fits completely with the following crucial step in just how to choose what eating plan you should follow to reduce weight permanently. Will the diet plan you are considering educate you how to consume long-term, or does it spoon-feed you information? Will the diet rely upon special bars, shakes, supplements or pre-made foods they provide?
Let's do one more diet plan A vs. diet plan B comparison. Diet regimen A is going to supply you with their foods, in addition to their special beverage or bars to eat, and also inform you precisely when to consume them. You will shed - claim - 30 pounds in two months. Diet regimen B is going to attempt to assist you discover which foods you ought to consume, how many calories you require to consume, why you require to consume them, and generally effort to assist show you how to eat as component of an overall way of living adjustment that will certainly enable you to make enlightened choices concerning your nutrition. Diet plan B creates a slow-moving constant fat burning of 8 -10 pounds monthly for the following 6 months as well as the weight remains off due to the fact that you currently understand how to consume correctly.
Recall the Chinese adage. Both diets will certainly assist you to reduce weight. Only one diet plan, nonetheless, will certainly teach you just how to be autonomous after your experience mores than. Diet plan A is less complicated, to be sure, and triggers quicker weight-loss than diet plan B, and also diet regimen B takes longer and needs some thinking and understanding on your part. Nonetheless, when diet regimen A mores than, you are right back where you began and have been given no skills to fish. Diet plan business do not make their revenues by showing you to fish, they make their cash by handing you a fish so you need to rely on them indefinitely or return to them after you get all the weight back.
Thus, diet B is superior for allowing you to be successful where other diet plans failed, with understanding got that you can apply long-term. Diet regimen programs that attempt to spoon feed you a diet plan with no attempt to teach you how to eat without their assistance and/or depend on their drinks, bars, cookies, or pre-made foods, is another diet you can eliminate from your list of choices.
Diet plan intends that offer weight reduction by consuming their item for several dishes followed by a "sensible supper;" diet plans that enable you to eat their special cookies for the majority of dishes together with their pre-planned food selection; or diet regimens that try to have you consuming their bars, beverage, or pre-made dishes, are of the diet regimen A selection covered above. They're simple to comply with but destined for failing, long term. They all fall short the "Can I consume by doing this for the remainder of my life?" examination, unless you really think you can eat cookies as well as drinks for the rest of your life ... Profits right here is, if the nutritional method you utilize to drop weight, be it from a book, a course, a clinic, or an electronic book, does not educate you how to consume, it's a loser for long term weight-loss and also it ought to be prevented.
The missing out on link for long-term weight reduction
We currently make our way to another test to help you select a nourishment program for long-term weight loss, as well as it does not actually entail nutrition. The missing out on link for long term weight-loss is exercise. Workout is the vital part of long term weight management. Lots of diet plan programs do not include an exercise component, which indicates they are losers for long term weight-loss from the very beginning. Any type of program that has its focus on weight loss yet does not include a thorough exercise strategy is like purchasing an automobile without tires, or an aircraft without wings. Individuals who have successfully kept the weight off overwhelmingly have included workout right into their lives, and also the research studies that consider people that have actually efficiently lost weight and kept it off invariably find these individuals followed their diet plan as well as workout strategies. (4 )
I am not mosting likely to note all the benefits of routine workout here, but routine exercise has favorable results on your metabolic rate, enables you to eat even more calories yet still be in a calorie shortage, and can aid protect lean body mass (LBM) which is vital to your health and also metabolic rate. The several health benefits of routine exercise are popular, so I won't bother including them here. The bottom line here is, (a) if you have any kind of objectives of obtaining the most from your objective of reducing weight and (b) strategy to keep it off long term, normal exercise has to be an essential component of the weight loss strategy. So, you can remove any program, be it book, e-book, clinic, and so on that does not provide you instructions and also assist with this crucial part of long-term weight reduction.
Side Bar: A quick note on workout:
Any exercise is far better than no exercise. Nevertheless, like diet strategies, not all exercise is developed equivalent, and also lots of people frequently select the wrong kind of workout to optimize their initiatives to lose weight. For instance, they will certainly do aerobics specifically and overlook resistance training. Resistance training is a necessary element of fat loss, as it constructs muscular tissue vital to your metabolic process, enhances 24 hr energy expense, and has health and wellness advantages past aerobics.
The visitor will certainly likewise note I stated weight loss over not weight reduction Though I make use of the term 'fat burning' throughout this write-up, I do so only because it is an acquainted term the majority of people recognize. Nevertheless, the true focus and also goal of an appropriately established nourishment and also exercise plan need to get on fat loss, not weight management. A focus on losing weight, which might consist of a loss crucial muscle, water, as well as even bone, in addition to fat, is the incorrect method. Losing the fat and maintaining the all important lean body mass (LBM), is the objective, and the approach for achieving that can be found in my e-book( s) on the topic, and is beyond the range of this post. Bottom line: the kind of exercise, intensity of that workout, length of time doing that workout, and so on, are essential variables below when attempting to lose FAT while maintaining (LBM).
Psychology 101 of long-term weight reduction.
Many diet plan programs out there do not resolve the psychological element of why individuals fall short to be successful with long term weight-loss. Nonetheless, quite a few research studies exist that have considered simply that. In several areas, the emotional aspect is the most important for long-term fat burning, and most likely one of the most underappreciated element.
Research studies that contrast the emotional attributes of people that have actually efficiently kept the weight off to individuals that have regained the weight, see clear distinctions in between these 2 teams. For instance, one research that looked at 28 overweight females that had actually dropped weight yet restored the weight that they had lost, contrasted to 28 previously obese females who had slimmed down as well as kept their weight for at least one year and 20 ladies with a stable weight in the healthy and balanced variety, found the women who restored the weight:
o Had a tendency to assess self-worth in regards to weight and form
o Had a lack of alertness when it come to weight control
o had a dichotomous (black-and-white) believing style
o Had the tendency to make use of consuming to control mood.
  The researchers ended:
" The results recommend that psychological variables might offer some description as to why lots of people with excessive weight gain back weight following effective weight-loss."
This particular study was done on ladies, so it reflects a few of the specific mental issues females have - but make no mistake here - men likewise have their own psychological issues that can undermine their long-term weight loss efforts. (6 )
Extra researches on men and women locate psychological features such as "having impractical weight objectives, bad coping or problem-solving abilities and low self-efficacy" frequently anticipate failing with long term fat burning. (7) On the other hand, psychological attributes common to people that experienced successful long-term weight loss consist of "... an inner motivation to drop weight, social support, far better coping strategies and ability to take care of life stress and anxiety, self-efficacy, autonomy, thinking responsibility in life, and in general much more emotional strength and security." (8 )
The main point of this section is to show that psychology plays a major duty in figuring out if people succeed with long term weight loss. If it's not resolved as component of the overall strategy, it can be the factor that makes or breaks your success. This, nonetheless, is not an area most nourishment programs can adequately take on and also should not be anticipated to. Nonetheless, the much better programs do normally attempt to aid with motivation, goal setting, as well as assistance. If you see yourself in the above lists from the groups that fell short to maintain their weight long term, after that recognize you will require to address those concerns via counseling, support groups, etc. Do not expect any type of weight management program to cover this subject sufficiently however do look for programs that try to provide support, goal setting, and resources that will certainly keep you on the right track.
  " There's a fool birthed every min"
So why do not you see this sort of truthful details about the realities of long term weight reduction more frequently? Let's be honest below, leveling is not the very best way to market bars, trembles, books, supplements, and also programs. Heck, if by some wonder every person that review this article really followed it, and also sent it on numerous other people who actually followed it, makers of claimed items can be in monetary trouble quickly. Nevertheless, they also know - as the guy claimed - "there's a sucker birthed every minute," so I question they will be maintained at night stressing over the impacts that I, or this write-up, will certainly carry their service.
So let's recap what has actually been discovered below: the large picture facts of irreversible weight loss and also just how you can look at a weight management program and decide on your own if it's for you based on what has been covered over:
o Long-term weight-loss is not regarding discovering a fast fix diet regimen, but making a dedication to life style changes that consist of nutrition as well as workout
o Any kind of weight management program you select must pass the "Can I eat in this way for the remainder of my life?" examination,
o The weight reduction program you choose ought to ultimately educate you how to consume as well as be self reliant so you can make educated long term choices concerning your nourishment.
o The weight loss program you pick must not leave you reliant on industrial bars, drinks, supplements, or pre-made foods, for your long-term success.
o The weight reduction program you choose should have a reliable workout element.
o The fat burning program you choose must try to assist with motivation, setting goal, and also assistance, yet can't be a substitute for emotional therapy if required.
  Verdict
I intend to take this last section to include some added points and clearness. For beginners, the above guidance is except every person. It's not meant for those who actually have their nourishment called in, such as competitive bodybuilders and also various other professional athletes that benefit from rather significant adjustments in their nutrition, such as 'off period' and 'pre-contest' and so forth.
The write-up is likewise not intended for those with medical issues who might be on a details diet to treat or manage a certain clinical problem. The write-up is intended for the ordinary individual who intends to leave the Yo-Yo diet regimen merry-go-round once and for all. As that's most likely 99% of the populace, it will certainly cover millions of people.
Individuals should additionally not be scared off by my "you need to consume in this manner permanently" suggestions. This does not mean you will certainly be dieting for the remainder of your life and also have just malnourishment to eagerly anticipate. What it does suggest, nevertheless, is you will need to find out to consume properly even after you reach your target weight and that method of eating should not be a significant separation from how you ate to shed the weight to begin with. When you get to your target weight - as well as or your target bodyfat degrees - you will certainly go onto an upkeep phase which normally has even more calories and options of food, even the occasional treat, like a piece of pizza or whatever.
Upkeep diet regimens are a logical extension of the diet plan you used to lose the weight, yet they are not based upon the diet regimen you adhered to that place the weight on in the first place!
Despite which program you choose, utilize the above 'big picture' strategy which will maintain you on course for long term weight-loss. See you in the fitness center!

" There's a fool birthed every min"

Let's be honest below, leveling is not the very best way to market bars, trembles, books, supplements, and also programs.   Verdict
I intend to take this last section to include some added points and clearness. For beginners, the above guidance is except every person. Jen's HCG Diet Success Story
Tumblr media
HDI has seen millions of HCG Diet success stories over the years. This is my own, and the reason I ultimately started this site. I personally lost 90 lbs on the HCG Diet in 2002, and used various supplements and medical weight loss products to help maintain my weight and improve my health. After having a baby in 2017, I lost another 40 pounds using hCG and medical weight loss by Diet Doc (Read my pro review here.) My Personal HCG Diet Success Story... In 2002, I found myself weighing over 240 lbs and wearing a size 20 (and it was tight!)  Less than a year later, I had lost 90 lbs following the HCG Diet Plan and kept it off for over 10 years. In 2014, I had a baby and used Hcg and medical weight loss products to lose over 40 pounds of pregnancy weight (and surprisingly fast.)  This is why, and how I did it.... My Story When I was in high school, I was already struggling with my weight.  Even though I was a devoted, star-level athlete, I struggled with eating disorders and always seemed to be quite a bit curvier than my friends.  I didn't realize then just how I was setting myself up for serious weight problems as I got older. Out of high school, I gained over 100 pounds in the first year.  I was miserable.  I went on a starvation diet and forced myself to run every day until I lost the weight... even though I hated running.  A few years later, I had gained all of the weight back and more (240 pounds, plus a few cheeseburgers.) I went back and forth on crash diets; Weight Watchers, Atkins, 1200 calorie madness diets, and just about every other diet imaginable... until one day, I was talking with a friend. You know that friend we all have; she's a slender, graceful girl that looks great in a bikini without having to suck her stomach in.  Ya, that's the one. We'll call her Sylvia (because that's her name.) While we were sitting in a circle with all of our friends, someone passed a can of Pringles to her.  I watched her take ONE out carefully, and then casually turn the can and read the label while eating the chip.  After she finished the chip, she passed the can along and never had another.  I asked her if that was how she kept her figure- if she was just an extremely careful and healthy eater.  She laughed.  She said, "Believe it or not, I was once extremely overweight."  I couldn't believe it! My size 2 friend went on to tell me how she had once been close to 200 lbs.  I asked how she had turned it around.  She shared how a doctor she worked with, had suggested she try this little-known "Simeons Diet" and he would prescribe it for her.  I had never heard of this at the time but I asked her every detail I could think of.   The next day I began calling Doctors asking if they could oversee this "Simeons Diet" using HCG.   It wasn't easy back then.  There was 0 information online about this mystery diet and 99% of the doctors I talked to weren't familiar enough to give it a go.   After weeks and weeks of research and phone calls, I finally found one that agreed. I wasn't given the exact Simeons protocol, but close... with quite a few variations that I felt comfortable with. The doctor adjusted my HCG injection dosage based on my current weight. He had me on 200 iu daily.  (Just a note here: My prescribed protocol varied from the original, yet it still worked great, just as many other modern protocol variations.) My diet, I kept to a modified version of the Simeons original food list based on my friend's suggestions as well as what I felt comfortable with.  I had a several salads a day.  My go-to food was a spinach salad with fat free turkey pepperoni, vegan pepper jack rice cheese, cherry tomatoes (very few and not all the time,) occasional spices, and Braggs Amino acids (sprayed on with a dressing sprayer, not poured).  I was shocked-  I was not hungry at all, and I found myself craving salad for the first time in my life.  I would also have green beans and shrimp for dinner, also with Braggs and seasoning.  I was extremely careful with my portion sizing.   I would have melba toast as a snack or broken up in one of my salads like croutons.  In the mornings, I stuck with eggs and hot sauce. I did not stick to 500 calories. In fact, I ate more than this, but the majority of my calories came from vegetables. If I was hungry, I ate. I would just make sure I it was usually one of the aforementioned salads. I exercised regularly, going to the gym and doing at least 40 minutes of low impact cardio daily- walking or elliptical.  I focused on how good it made me feel rather than my old approach of "I have to do this."  In the beginning it did not feel comfortable but I kept telling myself how much easier it would get and how great I would look and feel if I just kept at it.   I was right. The weight started coming off within a few days and did not stop.  I was so motivated at this point, that I started really loving what I was eating and going to the gym. During the first round, 28 days, I had lost 26 lbs. It took me 4 rounds to lose 88 lbs. For over 10 years, my weight has fluctuated slightly, here and there, but never in excess. My metabolism has remained strong and my eating habits became instinctively healthy.  I still love salads.  I am not overly interested in processed foods like breads and cereals.  I love staying active but I opt for activities that I enjoy rather than going to the gym with the mindset of "I have to work out." When I think back, I am still amazed at how simple the entire process was and how the transition phase and maintenance phase were even more simple.  I am so extremely grateful to my beautiful friend Sylvia, (still a size 2 after two children, 20+ years later!) who introduced me to the Hcg Diet.  There isn't a day that goes by that I don't consider just how grateful I am for the body I now have and the lifestyle that comes with it.  As I said, I was originally on the HCG Diet in 2002 and at the time there were absolutely no websites online about the diet plan. No online guidance, and blogs did not yet exist.   I started a an online support group to see if others were out there.  I soon found I had a growing member list of people desperately trying to learn about the diet.  I decided to start a website based on all of our pieced-together knowledge and the help from my doctor.   I started the "HCG Diet Info" website and the rest is exciting history: over 100 million visits later, HDI continues to be the leading authority on the HCG Diet Plan. UPDATE: MY POST BABY WEIGHT LOSS EXPERIENCE: In 2014, I had a beautiful baby boy.... and with him, came 40+ pounds of pregnancy weight! After having my baby, I decided to explore different options. Here is what I did: I initially used the HCG diet from Diet Doc, a modern Hcg Diet approach, and then used various medical products (less rigid approaches) to lose the final pounds and maintain (lipotropics, B12 shots, Semaglutide, etc.) In detail: I tried the original protocol. I tried a rogue approach, and I also tried several peptide weight loss products and really tested to see what I felt worked well for myself, and what would work for my readers. I started with HCG Dieting, post-breastfeeding.  Exploring all the different options and taking well planned breaks between rounds, it took me about 7 months to lose the weight. My takeaway was that Diet Doc was a great option for when I had a large amount of weight to lose; which ultimately led to me recommending them on this site. Here are my other takeaways: The original protocol works beautifully, but it is rigid, and there is little room for error, or exploring. While this did give me the best results, I enjoyed the slower-loss, easier approach more; I ate similarly to the first time I was on the diet, where I mixed vegetables, focused on eating a lot of greens, and wasn't overly strict with my calories. If I was hungry, I ate. I also exercised still. The original protocol allows only 500 calories and no exercise. This just didn't feel good to me, so I went ahead and upped my calories, while continuing with light exercise; walking, occasionally jogging, and yoga or pilates. My foods included plenty of vegetables, lean chicken and no sugar. I did add fruit this time, which was something I had not eaten the first time around. I also included additional products and a lower dose of HCG. I took 125 iu of HCG daily, beginning with Phase 1, Loading days. I added B12 for energy, and during my breaks between rounds, I would add lipotropic fat-burning injections. I occasionally added other supplements as needed; for example, I was fine using an appetite suppressant as needed; at the start of a round when I was struggling etc. This is just what worked for me. During this time, I had also experienced severe tragedies in my family, including losing my baby sister to domestic violence. Adding stress to that grief, I struggled when I returned to school to finish my PhD. Needless to say, I was learning to adapt through grief, stress, emotional turmoil and endless up's and down's. It ultimately gave me countless lessons and helped me to figure out what would work for me even as "life happens." I share these experiences through my blog, which you can find here:  Jen's Blog Read More HCG Diet success stories. After the HCG Diet - MY Story Continued I get asked about my transition phase so much, I thought I'd add my own experience going from Phase 2 to a normal life. I realize the importance of how I transitioned my diet from starting with HCG diet shots and the VLCD (very low calorie diet) to everyday life.  I didn't just swap back to my pre-HCG weight loss days.  Instead, I continued with the original Dr. Simeons protocol but added calories through vegetables and liquidy foods (think low-sugar greek yogurt and sugar-free smoothies.) I learned the importance of keeping the body's ph balance alkaline and added related supplements to my diet, including vegetable teas (Amazing Grass Superfoods supplements are in my water at all times- In fact, I highly recommend vegetable and alkalizing supplements. Also, I always make sure I get at least 30 grams of fiber daily, either through high fiber raw foods or supplements.  My daily food intake include omega eggs, strawberries, avocados, spinach... I tend to blend more than cook actually.  Vegetable & fruit smoothies are a staple in my life. In fact, I try to add vegetables or fruit to every meal and eat at least one apple a day, whether I feel like it or not. I also love to exercise.  In the past, I hated exercise.  It was something I HAD TO DO, rather than enjoyed.  Well, guess what?  Exercise as a healthier person, just doesn't feel like exercise-it actually feels really great to move and be active.  I also  stopped thinking, "I really need to go to the gym and stay on that treadmill for no less than an hour."  Instead, I started thinking about what feels good.  I just get on the treadmill and go- who cares about time!  If it's 10 minutes or 2 hours- whatever feels good!  It became soooo simple. I initially started with stretching and yoga, which turned to Pilates and Barre.  Pilates turned to the occasional stroll on the treadmill or around the block.  I am not joking, but within a few months, I became addicted to the gym and "moving."  Not because I had to, but because it felt good. I went to Puerto Vallarta 6 months after my first Hcg Diet experience.  I found myself hitting the gym at the resort every time I was a bit bored and felt just incredible.  It wasn't until I got home that I realized I had lost weight on vacation. Who LOSES weight on vacation???  It honestly never occurred to me that I had to exercise-  I was just doing what felt good. I think I discovered the bottom line is just doing what feels good for your mind, your body and your emotional well-being:  Essentially, doing nothing, feels bad and keeps you feeling bad.  Doing something keeps you moving forward and feeling great. My before and after pictures are posted in the photo gallery of the HCG Diet Forums. I hope this story and these photos help to motivate and inspire others.  I've now lost  90 lbs and kept the weight off since 2002.  I still love going to the gym, I still eat moderately and I rarely think of what I can and can't eat.  I can honestly say that hcg was what I needed to change my life- it was the gateway to my healthy lifestyle. My Blog - More Hcg weight loss Success Stories - Read more on Maintaining Your Weight Loss "How I did it... Step by Step - HCG Diet: Dr. Simeons 500 calorie diet with daily HCG injections of 200 units of hcg. - Yoga and Pilates, walking- Anything to keep my heart pumping for a minimum of 20 minutes a day. (Felt great doing this a few times throughout the day!) - Alkalizing.  I added a glass of Super Greens diet supplement (30 lbs of vegetables in one alfalfa-scented serving. It's not that bad, I promise!) and Alkalizing drops to my water.  I find this has an incredible effect on my appetite, energy levels, and mood.  It also takes a few years off the skin!  (Anytime someone tells me alkalizing is a scam, I laugh- I go by how I feel and I feel fantastic when I'm following this regimen.) - Increased calories through vegetables and negative calorie, organic, raw foods. Increased exercise to 40 minutes a day, sometimes twice a day. - Exercised frequently.  Diet is high in fiber (30-35 grams daily) and alkalized.  At this point, I stopped thinking about what I can and can't eat- it just became second-nature to eat healthy. - I went shopping- I needed an entire new wardrobe because my clothes no longer fit!
