What I'm Watching October 2016 as of 10/30
Yikes this months list is shockingly small... I am currently watching Mushishi though. I really like it, its dark, creepy, fascinating, and does not have a barrage of happy endings which a lot of other shows with similar ideas which I really appreciate. It makes it feel more real. But it also makes it hard to watch a lot of all at once, so I've been going at it really slowly. I really like it so far being 5 or 6 episodes in. I'll put a post up as soon as I finish the first season I promise!!
Blood: The Last Vampire (re-watch) 10/30
I love this movie, and would highly recommend it, especially if you have ever watched or read the many different series's inspired by it.
If you want to know more about it, watch this video I made a year ago as a Halloween recommendation.
Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies' light) 10/18
This was a 40 minute movie about the story between a forest yokai and a young girl. When she was 6 years old she met a human looking  yokai in the forest while visiting her uncle during the summer. She quickly becomes friends, but has to make sure that she never touches him or else he will disapear from existence. The movie shows their relationship as she comes back to see him every summer up until her 'current' age as a high school student.
Its incredibly sweet and short. It reminds me a lot of Natsume's Book of Friends because of the art style and the relationship between human and yokai. Because of the nature of the story and how short it is, it really just describes the two individuals relationships and the growing love the main female character has for the male yokai.
If you want a short sweet mild love story between a human and a yokai, this is a good one to watch. Nothing amazing, but it was enjoyable.
Psycho-Pass 10/14
22 episodes, 2012
In a future where tech has been developed for the good of the collective comes an authority system called Sybil who is able to 'read' a persons mind/potential. Sybil reads a persons psychological state and their intent/potential to cause violence. Any one above a certain cut off are considered latent criminals even if they haven't done anything.
The series follows Shinomori, a rookie detective in Sybil's small police force. As she and her team investigate latent criminals and actual criminals she discovers the gaping fault of the Sybil system and struggles to figure out what the right way to treat/handle the people in these cases.
Immediately when I started watching I was thrown back to Ghost in the Shell. Psycho-Pass sort of feels like an alternate world of GITS but if technology focused on the collective and more superficial life styles rather than on the individual and technology to handle the real world. The Japan in Psycho-Pass is still closed off the the world, Sybil's cameras are on every street constantly analyzing people. Citizens feel safe because they live in a world where crime is infrequent and people focus on keeping a healthy mind ot not be labeled as a latent criminal. They have tech that decides a person fate, minimal and very obvious robot usage. Whereas in GITS Japan's tech has been focused on artificial intelligence in robots, the development of cyborgs, cyborization of individuals, and cyber security. The police force in this world still acts like our police today to stop crimes, and a special unit (the one the series focuses on) specializes in cyber security.
Its very clearly inspired by Ghost in the Shell, the future tech, the specialized police force, the ability to receive info straight to a person eyes. But the tech in Psycho-Pass seems unbalanced, sort of as though all 99% of the tech that exists were created before the Sybil system ~50 years ago, and very little was created since then. The level of tech is not balanced throughout the society like it is in other sci-fi societies. Its ever so slightly unsettling because it just doesn't match up. Another thing that bothered me was how quickly the anime moved through the story. A lot happens and it all feels rushed. Detectives are stuck in a case? no problem cause  1 minute later they have ti solved. Something intended to be emotionally intense happens, but we the audience don't feel it emotionally because no time was made for us to connect with the characters.
I enjoyed this show a lot, but because it was so rushed, I can't say it was particularly great. Which saddens me because if more time was spent on the character and the actual detective/mystery part of it I would have loved it. The concept is great, but the execution could have been better. I'm not sure if I'll watch the second season or the movie, considering the story in season 1 was completely wrapped up, it wrapped up very well I might add.
Just because of how quickly it moved through the scenes, and how little time it spends trying to get the audience to connect I cannot say I would freely recommend it. It felt as though the studio had intended to make more episodes but was suddenly given a ridiculous deadline that they could only make if they cut out every slower non-action packed moment. Which is a shame because the story is very good, its mature, psychological, and the writing is wonderful.
Watch if you want to, I'm not sure what else to say. Its not bad by any means, but its not as wonderful as it could have been.
91 Days 10/4
One day later and I'm still excited about this anime. It was a simulcast this past summer that I waited to watch so it wouldn't interfere with my many other simulcasts for the season.
Anyway, this is a mafia revenge story set in the US during prohibition. The series spends its time watching Avilio infiltrate the Vanetti family in order to take out his revenge for killing his family. 12 episodes, with one recap that can be skipped no problem, the series is in a constant state of suspense and mystery. Every moment necessary to the plot and story, not one scene that was thrown in just for the purpose of filling time.
The animation itself is nothing to get excited about, but the story is wonderful. And while the main character is considerably void of emotion and personality during the majority of the series, it makes the moments where you see the real him and his emotions that much more precious and impactful. I know that some people don't like main characters like this, but the series spends a lot of time focusing on other characters and families as well. The show also makes a point to get the viewer to learn about and empathize with Avilio's enemies, which created a lot of great inner conflicts while watching the show. I kept forgetting who exactly I was rooting for, and how many terrible things the characters have done.
91 Days is full of gray, nothing in it is black and white, which is what makes it such a great revenge story. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a gray area, 'natural', revenge, mafia, suspense story. 10/10 would watch again.
