Not at all related to my last ask. Would you say that Wuthering Heights is a book that one must learn to acquire a taste for? Did you love it as soon as you read it? I read it about two months ago (you talking about it inspired me to give it a read), and although I appreciate the story and understand it, I am not sure why I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I'm thinking about rereading it as soon as I watch one of the movies to give it another try. Also: What is your fav part?
I did love Wuthering Heights the first time that I read it, but I do think that I had very personal associations with the book that made stand out even more greatly to me. I know that lots of people don’t feel quite the same about it, but then I’ve never been quite as enthralled by Pride and Prejudice as many people so it likely only amounts to personal taste.
If you’re going to watch the movies, I would actually suggest watching two of them. The 2009 mini-series with Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley, because it has the most convincing chemistry of any of them. Then the 2012 version with Kaya Scodelario and James Howson, because it touches more on racial issues (though prepare yourself to hear those slurs shouted) and the cinematography is beautiful.
It’s so hard for me to decide my favorite part of the book, because I tend to look at it as a whole instead of pieces...there’s just so much I love about it. I love envisioning Heathcliff and Cathy running through the moors, rolling around and getting dirty, whispering secrets, dreaming up a royal past for Heathcliff because Cathy thinks he looks like a prince. I love feeling the pressure building in my chest when I think how much he aches for her, and envisioning him at her grave, bloody, sobbing, and desperate to hold her cold body to his own.
Then, I even love the deep melancholy as he lingers without her...it’s such an emotional whirlwind.
