#just in case you didn't pick up on that we're going to have The NCR Companion tell you to your face how fucked up it is

i just think it’s really interesting how boone is set up as The NCR Companion (former NCR soldier + most supportive of the NCR route + will confront you and/or straight up leave if you gain too much NCR infamy) and then his actual dialogue, backstory and companion quest just beat you over the head with some of the most obvious pointed criticism of the NCR in the entire game

As I entered the King's school, Pacer was waiting and he stopped me right as I came in, "Hey there, I heard that NCR soldier lady told you some wild story about them sending a messenger to us to work out some deal." I narrowed my eyes at him. He continued, "The King's got a lot on his mind right now, so don't you go bothering him with all that, dig?" Of course, that's what had happened. Pacer got to him before he could get to the King. I told Pacer, "Go fuck yourself, Pace. This is serious." His smile turned to a scowl, and he pushed me out of his way, knocking my cap off my head "Fine then, go tell him! Just don't expect it to matter..." With that, he ran out of the building before I could do anything, making sure to stomp on my hat on his way. I picked up my hat and dusted it off before hurrying in to see the King.

The King turned when he heard me enter, "You find somethin' about them soldier boys yet?" I nodded, "They're in Freeside to deliver supplies." The King shrugged, "What? Like food and stuff? Doesn't seem like nothin' to get riled over." I shook my head, "They're only serving food to NCR citizens. They said they sent a man to talk with you about delivering food to locals and he was beaten half to death!" The King looked confused, "They said what!? I tell ya, I didn't ever see that man in my life. Then, who.... Oh... Oh no, Pace what've you done this time?" He buried his head in his hands. Just then, a member of the Kings wearing a plain shirt and jeans burst into the theater, shouting, "King! We got trouble! Down by the old train station! It looks like Pacer and some NCR folks!" The King looked up, for the first time since I'd known him looking worried, "Oh, godammit, Pacer! Look, you gotta go out there and defuse this situation. Pace is an idiot, and I'll give him an earful for it, but he's still the only friend I've got left from back in the day, you gotta save him!" I nodded and headed off full steam for the old train station.

The situation at the train station was bad. Several Kings were lying dead on the ground around a bus stop, with Pacer cowering inside it from an NCR soldier firing at him from the rail tower. He saw me, and yelled, "Don't just stand there, do something!" I took a deep breath, raised my hands and walked toward the tower. I heard Elizabeth shout over the gunshots, "Keep your weapons holstered or we'll open fire!" I got out of the firing line quickly and soon reached the rail tower.

AsElizabeth scowled at me as I got to her, "What are you doing here!?" I answered, "The King sent me. He wants to help you." Elizabeth crossed her arms, "Like he helped the envoy we sent? No thanks." I returned her scowl, "The envoy never even reached him, he had nothing to do with it. And looking at the ground I just covered, I'd say you've more than gotten revenge!" She sighed, "Maybe you're right. We'll just have to see... Cease fire! Tell the King that our feud is over. We're willing to cooperate." I nodded, "Good. There's enough bloodshed in Freeside."
As I was leaving, I noticed Pacer limping away from the bus stop. He muttered as I passed by him, "Hope you enjoy playing hero while it lasts..." I just waved him off as I passed by on my way back to the King.

The King was waiting for me in the usual spot in the theater. He looked relieved when I walked in, "I heard about what happened. Maybe it's time for a little more talkin' and a little less fightin'. You've helped us plenty, so just once, I'm willing to do you a favor. Just name it, and if it's within my power, I'll do it. Take your time and think it over, you only get one favor from the King." I nodded. Could come in handy. The King spoke up again, "Please, don't be mad at Pace. He's had a hard life. All of us have. With all this going on, I've been thinkin'. If the world is a hard place, we should all work together to make it better." He laughed slightly, and I took my seat at his table, "Maybe that's why I started the King's in the first place. Make Freeside a place where every man is a king in his own right."
After he had finished talking, I noticed his dog whimpering behind his chair, looking to be in pain, "What's wrong with your dog?" The King looked down at him, "Hm? You mean Rex? He's had a hard life too. Bought him off a trader some years back. I took him to Julie up at the fort, she told me his brain's going bad." I hated seeing a dog in pain, "Is there any way I can help?" The King looked a bit surprised, "After all you've done for us, I couldn't rightly ask you for more." I leaned forward, "I insist." He shrugged, "Well, if that's the case, you should go ask Julie about it. She's got more know-how about this stuff than me." I stood up, and said, "I'll be back, then." The King waved me off before reaching down to pat Rex on his brain case.
