Madoka Magica
Can you believe that! Madoka Magica crossed ten years, and it is still a fan-favorite magical girl series of all time. Since its release, Madoka Magica gained many fans following its witty art style and unforgettable characters. Let’s look at what made this magical girl series so famous.
Note: The following contains spoilers for Madoka Magica manga and anime by Gen Urobuchi and studio Shaft.
The animation studio SHAFT is known for its unique animation style, and throughout the last decade, it has produced some of the best aesthetically pleasing anime shows of all time. From the Monogatari series to the lovey-dovey Nisekoi, SHAFT alienated itself from the standard animation style, and it proved its worth with the dark fantasy series Madoka Magica.
What is Madoka Magica, and why is it so popular?
Madoka Magica is unlike any magical girl show you’ve ever watched. From the animation style to the overall atmosphere, Madoka Magica is the height of what you can do with a story and how you can change it with a new and fresh perspective. Unlike the traditional magical girl shows like the Little Witch Academia, Pretty Cure, Princess Tutu, and the likes of Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica is a mature series that dwells more on the dark side of being a magical girl.
Ten years later, Madoka Magica still holds the crown for being the genre-bending anime of this generation. The dark take of the traditional magical girls took the anime community by storm as nobody expected the dark perspective on the cute magical girl genre.
The plot, character, and animation of Madoka Magica
Madoka Magica revolves around Madoka Kaname and her fate of being devoured by the ugly world of magical girls. The show highlights the ugly truth of being a magical girl, and unlike any other show, Madoka Magica’s characters break the fourth wall and subtly hints that the cute anime girls, dressed up in doll outfits, have to face a fate worse than death. Kaname’s friends Sayaka Miki and Homura Akemi shed light on their future and how the kawaii pet Kyubey tricks the young school girls into becoming magical beings to experiment with human emotions and humanity.
Each character has a past story that forced them into believing in the magical girls, and Kyubey, an alien, uses the emotions of young girls to collect data about the earth. In Cardcaptor Sakura, Cerberus, an alien entity, tricks Sakura into being a magical girl. Still, the difference between the two shows is so vast, and Cardcaptor Sakura never truly reveals the dark side of the magical girl world. To bridge the gap between the world of magical girls and anime fans, who like to see cute anime girls in cute outfits, Madoka Magica serves the purpose of showing the real and daunting side of these magical powers.
The characters in Madoka Magica lose their humanity by joining the magical girl force. What is left of their body is a powerhouse that exists for the only reason, fighting. Visually, SHAFT did a fantastic job with the animation. The dark-toned colors, symmetrical backgrounds, and pleasing worlds of the voids, mixed with real-life elements, make Madoka Magica similar to the animation style of some legendary anime shows like Garden Of Words, Hyouka, and more.
The transitions, music, and overall color grading make the show shores apart from your traditional magical girls series from the 90s to 2021. Talking about the action sequences, the animation team seriously snatched the soul out of the viewers, especially with Homura vs. Mami’s scene in the movie Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion.
Conclusion
So far, it is really hard for any anime series to accomplish the excellence achieved by Madoka Magica. Even in the year 2021, animation studies hardly dares to initiate animation levels done in the Madoka Magica franchise. Any anime fan would agree that Monogatari, Madoka Magica, and March Comes In Like A Lion are worlds apart from traditional animation style. Modern animation studios are yet to achieve the excellence of SHAFT that made the twisted story of Madoka Magica special.

"Don't make me do this, Haytham!"
"You wouldn't dare..."
Fanart of Edward Kenway as Mami Tomoe and Haytham Kenway as Homura Akemi. As always, the Puella Magi suit is mixed with their respective robes.
I wasn't thinking of any plot whatsoever when I made this pic but I ended up having a Rebellion-ish scenario in my head, particularly that Homura vs Mami scene. Something along the line of Edward survived the attack in his mansion without anyone knowing, him confronting Haytham years later for defecting to the Templar side, fight ensues, and it ended with the elder Kenway holding his son at gunpoint as the latter conceds. How and when tf they became a Puer Magi as well as what're their wishes I don't even think of it cuz it's something that passes the night (a.k.a. I don't give much though about, just something related to this pic at that moment only).
Bear in mind that this is only for the 18th Century crew only. If it's Assassin's Creed overall, I would assign Ezio as Mami and maybe Altair as Homura. With this in mind, it shouldn't be hard to guess who's gonna be Madoka in this particular era.
Maybe I'll do a full body reference later. Again, they're wearing pants ffs. Still can't stop giggling every time I see Edward with Mami's Soul Gem cuz it somehow ruined the overall badass image he has :3c
Bonus lineart version under the cut cuz I somehow found a beauty in the uncolored version:
