#please do not read this meta as criticizing guillermo cause i think it's a v realistic and kind of under-explored character trait?

bizarre misogyny and general insanity aside, i think wwdits 4.09 was a pretty interesting Guillermo character study. Yes, Nandor ruined Guillermo's relationship. And, the reason that relationship was so precarious was bc Guillermo had kept that relationship secret from Nandor until that moment, and he had also kept Nandor—and EVERYTHING about his life—secret from his boyfriend.
guillermo is like, committed to living different lives that never intersect: the mosquito club never knowing he's a familiar, his family thinking he still works at panera, and now freddie knowing 0 about the people guillermo lives with. i think this character trait is a v interesting manifestation of being young, and in-but-out of the closet, and still figuring out what kind of life you want to build for yourself. you're repressed, so you're lying bc you only feel comfortable expressing one part of yourself at a time. However, this does have a cost! It makes those relationships precarious bc you have founded them on dishonest premises. the freddie breakup would not have happened, if freddie had known the truth (or something closer to it) about Guillermo's life, and the cloning would not have happened if Nandor had known about Freddie in the first place! come on, Guillermo, he's your best friend. you should have told him. So though Nandor did act very carelessly, I don't think the fault is completely w him. and i hope that part of guillermo's takeaway is—if you don't want everything to be about him, you gotta share stuff about your own life, and put some of your (real) self into your relationship.
