actually even that Franz Fanon quote I posted earlier today was a translation I'm not too fond of..... it just sounds strange in English ("as against this" is not a phrase I have ever heard or read...)
maybe it's in part the close association between much English and French vocabulary that leads people to want to translate things super literally even when the resulting phrase is confusing, unidiomatic, or nonsensical in English (& the vast differences in sentence structure between the two languages don't exactly aid comprehension when this literalist approach is taken)
