Writing Journal 10/16
For the video of Danah Boyd on the spread of conspiracy and hate online, I found the part where she talked about engineers and the goal being split between optimizing for capitalism and moral interests. As a computer science major, and currently working an internship that has me programming, which may be why I found this part the most interesting, I know that a lot of the search engines are not run with code that comes from engineers. In the last decade or so, machine learning has become a major focus of computer programming, especially for the major tech companies. Machine learning is a type of programming that, from my knowledge and simple terms, the program is learning from itself to find the best possible outcomes. For advertising this could be as simple as keeping track of all of the possible people who click on an advertisement, and categorizing them to find who else might be interested in that advertisement enough to click on it. Machine learning uses all past experiences to better develop itself for the next events. I also was intrigued by the entire conversation about how conspiracy theorists use the search engines to cheat the system and get their theories out there as much as they can. I know that, at least for google, this has been something that they have been trying to fight against allowing to happen. In our computer science classes with learned about a technique with I believe the spyder language that would do searches on web pages to find the words used the most, and for older versions of google search engines, this is what they used to figure out the relevance to what a person was searching. Our teacher told us the story of a web page that in black letters on top of a black background put thousands of the same word to increase their relevance when that word was searched, and Google ended up having to eventually reevaluate their search engine to check that the words were used in real sentences, and to find the context of sentences and such. The search for figuring out how to beat the search engines has in recent times, been a lot of focus by a lot of people. As was talked about in the video, youtube has its own search engine, which contains a lot less information than the entire internet, but still equally as important. They talked about in the video that this made youtube search engine a lot more complicated, since there is less information for the search engine base its search on. As well, many people’s careers are based on their youtube videos, and I remember talking about how changes to youtube’s search engine made people have to modify the videos they were creating, and they also had to do research into the changes, and how best to use the new engine to get the most people to their videos.
In the text, I found the topic about prosumerism the most interesting. I never really thought about before how much affect the internet and the age of information had on the change to industry like that. The age of industry brought around the ideals that people could learn how to do something just by watching a couple of videos or articles, and by following them, get the job that was required done. This avoids having the wait for someone else to have the time to come to your location and do the job, and the hassle of having to find someone with the required expertise. I had never thought before about how much this changed the labor to be on the consumer instead of the company, for the commodity of convenience and not having to wait for someone else. In the text where it talks about how for corporate owners, there is more incentive to use computer algorithms to monitor, track, and classify people, it reminds me of a book that we have to read for one of our computer science classes, called Player Piano. This book is a story about a time when the companies of the country had been all merged into one super company, that was entirely run by engineers that focused purely on efficiency and everything that could be done by a machine, was done by a machine and the only people with important jobs, were the people that maintained those machines, and the engineers that designed or upgraded machines. The books talks about an even larger separation of the classes, and how the upper class used monitor and predication systems to figure out how problematic people would be. With some of the things the text talks about, like the changes in company structures, the use of tracking and predication software for companies, and the use of the technology to persuade and influence people, sometimes without them even realizing, is similar to some of the topics that are shown in the story of Player Piano, and reminds me of how different, and yet similar the society is to the society in the story.
Tumblr media
I used linguistic model to describe things I say and heard in the video and text, and correlate it to things I have learned either in my job working in computer science or what I have learned and talked about in my classes. I also used visual model with this gif, because to me it shows how there may be so many things flying around, that do not at all seem correlated, or that I have absolutely any understanding about, but the databases and systems behind finds all of the possibly correlations, and draws lines between, and even learns how to do it better. As well, there are some boxes in the image that do not connect to anything else, and it reminded me of the video topic of conspiracy and that sometimes things just try to jump in, but are not actually connected, and it should be the systems job to not create the lines to those things where there should not be.

20 Pics Of Blondes Having Fun On Motorcycles – TheThings
“Blondes have more fun!” is a stereotype that has its origins in a post-WWII Clairol advertising slogan:
Does she or doesn’t she?
Only her hairdresser knows for sure!
Do blondes have more fun?
If i’ve one life…let me live it as a blonde!
The perception of blondes having more fun has been exploited in culture and advertising for years. But studies indicate that women in general, blondes, brunettes, redheads and others are having more fun on motorcycles.
According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, the trend of more women buying motorcycles has experienced steady growth in recent years. A 2018 survey shows that women make up 19 percent of motorcycle owners. The demographic has almost doubled since 2009 when only 10 percent of bike riders were women.
While no research has been conducted to determine what percentage of women riding motorcycles are blondes, like the slogan says, they are probably having more fun.
Here are twenty photos of blondes on motorcycles.

A helmet is not necessary…it would ruin the effect of long blonde hair blowing in the wind.
