PERSONAL LIFE.

i. On October 28 of 1994 in the city of Seoul, Kwon Namsoo was born into this world. When thinking of that day, he would say that it was the day a gift to the world was given. As a child, Namsoo would always try to be optimistic. His friends were nice, his teachers liked him, his neighbors would always be pleased to see his beautiful smile.

The only thing that ruined his “happy, bright” life was having to go home to see his parents argue about the littlest of things that. At the time, such topics didn’t even mean much to young Namsoo and his younger sibling.

The “littlest of things” that they had fought over, however, was the reason of the one night that both his mother and father asked for he and his sister to go down for a “talk”. At first, they both thought that they did something wrong. But… they weren’t.

Namsoo is eleven when his parents announce their divorce a month before his birthday.

ii. Since the day after the news, Namsoo and his mother have been living in their apartment in Daejeon, leaving his younger sister with their father. He doesn’t know if they were still living in their house in Seoul. He’s not even sure they’re still living in Korea. All he knows is that they aren’t here with him and his mother, sitting down with a birthday cake that has a candle in front of them in the center of the table.

Since they moved, he tells her he is fine over the fact that they had left everything behind. His friends, the teachers who had admired him, and the neighbors who would often compliment him. He somehow couldn’t befriend any of the people here and his teachers seem to dislike him. He is not used to the neighborhood, so he never hears compliments anymore. To try and make himself feel better, he praises himself to make sure he still feels good about his appearance. Without them, he sometimes doubts that he looks as good as the other boys in school.

He blows out the candle on the cake after making a wish and his mother asks him a question. “What did you wish for?”

“If I tell you, it won’t come true.”

At this point, his mother thought that he had wished for his father and sister to return. But instead, he wishes to become famous by being an idol.

iii. For the past few years, he had adapted to his new life. He made new friends, met teachers who enjoyed his presence, and met nice neighbors. He still is trying his best to be as optimistic as he could be. Though sometimes, he doesn’t even really bother.

He wasn’t sure if he could go with the dream that his younger self had wished for. When he has told people about it, they told him how his goals were “unrealistic” and “out of reach”. And though he listens to them, there’s still a bit of hope that perhaps one day, he would get his shot.

And through some miracle, while the sixteen year old was working a shift at his part-time job in the mall, he meets a person with a future of hopes in her hands. She tells him how he was good-looking and had potential to become a star. And in most situations, people would think this was a fake. But as the woman hands him her card, he realizes that this was no joke.

After the offer, he thinks to himself whether he should accept, or decline to be more focused on his studies. He could’ve made his mother proud, but this was his dream. He could prove those people who have proved him wrong all these years. He could become successful and loved for following his heart. Call him selfish, but he knew that this was more important than his own mother’s wishes.

After leaving Daejeon to follow his dreams at Nebula, it takes five long years of watching members come and go, struggle with the doubt of ever debuting at all, and the nights of tears for not being able to be as talented as his other members to finally reach the goal: debut.

iv. Ever since that day, he is thankful.

He is thankful to Nebula for giving him the chance to debut after taking him in seven years ago. If he had given up on them, he wouldn’t have been given the chance to debut and become the successful person he is after two years.

He is thankful to the Charms, the people who are the reason why he and his other members have become so successful. With endless support and love, Namsoo considers himself to be one of the luckiest people in the world to have such loyal and wonderful fans. Of course, saesangs being the exception. Otherwise, he was grateful for his fanbase.

He is thankful to HEX, the nine friends he didn’t ask for, but is grateful for in the end. If it weren’t for them, he probably wouldn’t have been where he was now. Having seen each of them show their skills and improve through the years with him predebut and after, he couldn’t help but feel proud of them all. he doesn’t go on about it constantly, but he appreciates each and every one of them and is glad to have gone through struggles together with them.

Finally, he’s thankful for never giving up. He’s thankful for making it this far. Despite his struggles and the bumpy road he had went through to get to where he was, from countless insecurities and rumors, Namsoo was grateful to be where he was now. From being scouted and leaving Daejeon to deal with five years of training to his idol debut, acting debut, and getting recognized by countries outside of Korea; he feel as if whatever struggles he went through, it led him to where he is today.

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES.

It was astounding to know how much Namsoo has improved over the years. When he had first got signed, he had mediocre singing abilities, only a little bit of experience with acting, and no knowledge with dancing. But it seemed that after five years of training and three more years of being an idol, he was given the opportunity to improve his skills to become a better idol that all people would be able to love.

Compared to when he first got signed under Nebula, he has definitely improved with his vocal abilities. Just with some vocal training and days filled with practice to be the best he could be, he was able to gain the title as lead vocalist in the group. It might not be main vocalist, but he could still be considered just as much of a big deal.

His acting has improved miraculously, though he has his love of dramas to thank for that. When he was given the opportunity to represent his group by acting in his first drama, he made sure not to disappoint. By the praises from comments left from netizens in the country and internationally, it seemed as if Nebula knew what to do when it came to him and the acting industry. From the role of a side character, he eventually gains lead character roles and continues to be recognized for his talent and charm.

He still has yet to be amazing at dancing. Though he improves with every new choreography, he could still be considered last on the list of best dancers in the group. But, as he watches his other members, it only gives him motivation to work hard and do better.

Obviously, he can’t rap to save his life…. unless it was for variety purposes.

2017 INTERVIEW.

If Namsoo were to be honest, he would say that he would feel grateful for being an idol under Nebula. Sure, the rumors and the netizens can be a bit of a struggle at times, but he learns to live with it. He somewhat knew what to expect the moment he signed the contract and throw himself into the world of fame. He knew that he would have to deal with haters, saesangs, the paparazzi, and news outlets who did nothing but waste people’s times with a bunch of lies. Of course, as a trainee, he didn’t expect to actually have to deal with it. But the moment he saw HEX’s debut music video get posted, he knew that this would have to be the struggles he was to deal with.

Though he is happy for what he has gone through, there’s still a bit of guilt and curiosity tugging at him from inside. He wondered that, now that he was mostly in Seoul, if his father and his sister have talked about their involvement with him. He wondered if they had ever bothered reaching out to him as his fame grew. He had no idea where they were and if they even knew who he was anymore. He kept his name the same, so they should’ve. But he couldn’t be too sure because he knew that his mother refused to associate with him. Or at least, she never spoke to him or about him after he left Daejeon.

But he refused to let that weigh him down, as he did with comments about him or his group in general.Throughout these past few years, he learns how to toughen up and how to not let negative emotions get to him so easily. He had gone through so much to get to where he was now and he refused to let that bring him down.
