PM is "post meridiem", AM is "ante meridiem"

"Meridiem" is .... noon.

Is noon after noon? Really? Can you actually argue for this?

Is midnight before or after noon? Which noon? It's twelve hours after the previous one, yes. But it's twelve hours before the next one. Which one are you talking about here?
