Things I noticed while rewatching Falsettos
Tumblr media
!!! SPOILER WARNING !!! While Whizzer is on his death bed he repeats "sometime" because despite what the song suggests, he's not ready to accept death especially because he doesn't want to leave the one stable relationship he has. During "what would I do", the emphasis on the word "we're" when Marvin says, "we're just gonna skip that stage." shows that Marvin will continue to follow Whizzer after the sickness. So maybe they did get one hour more. Marvin asks, "Life can be wonderful, isn't this wonderful?" and Whizzer is eager to reassure him but Marvin cuts him off because he is still insecure about his relationship with Whizzer and still wants to bicker with him. However, Whizzer is growing to be more mature about their relationship together and wants them to move further.

Haven't seen it yet, and I love Carrie with all my heart. And I'm glad she's having a great time doing this musical. But I've been thinking similar things. Just from the few songs that are out I got this very infantile feel. The lyrics of those just feel boring. Bad Cinderella sounds so 13 year old rebellion.
I should probably see it just to get the full picture. But yeah even IKIHAH just didn't do much for me.
Hey so here is my rant about the new Andrew Lloyd Webber Cinderella musical that literally no one asked for
I have condensed my complaints down into two main issues
The Lyrics
The really bad "feminism"
Lyrics
So my over all issue with the whole musical is the general naffness of the lyrics. I actually really like a lot of the music, and I think the vocal performances are incredible. The problem is what they're saying is so... meh. Where is the poetry? Where is the lyrical journey through the songs? The rhyming is often terrible and sometimes non-existant.
Cinderella sings that she has a "more than sky-high IQ" - then show us! Can't she come up with a better insult than "lame"? I get that big vocabulary isn't necessarily tied to intelligence but when you're learning about a character through a vocal medium that's kind of the main thing you have to go on? Also if she's so smart why does she think it was a Greek goddess who launched a thousand ships? (I literally hit my head against the computer at that point arghh).
At first I thought that the problem was basically that ALW had tried to write a contemporary musical, and thus they had got a contemporary style lyricist on board, and then ALW being ALW the music didn't turn out with the quite same contemporary feeling to match the lyrics. But! There are plenty of contemporary musicals that get poetic and witty and take the audience on a journey in each song! So it's just that this one is bad. It's such a shame as like I've said, I feel like the music and vocal performances were so promising.
Cinder-"I'm not like the other girls"-ella
Okay so my other major issue with this show is kind of the whole tone of Cinderella as a character and the whole show tbh. It massively plays into the "we have a strong independent female main character so it's feminist! never mind what she says or does to the other women in the show!" lazy writing that is still rampant across many medias, as well as the obvious "I'm not like the other girls" trope. And it's not done in a conscious, critical way, it's very cut-and-dry.
Cinderellas only growth as a character is learning to let her guard down for Prince Sebastian. That is it. There is absolutely no awareness of the struggles that the other women in Belleville go through, there's no discussion of how they too are trapped by the towns aesthetic and expectations - to the end Cinderella sneers at them for their conformity. There is just zero nuance at all in this musical. They've created such a straightforward example of how girlboss leading ladies arent actually feminist, it is genuinely painful.
TLDR: Maybe 8 year-old me would have been able to enjoy this musical. Maybe.

one of the [many] reasons autism goes undiagnosed is because autism is genetic and families are always more likely to notice traits that stand out. little Sam doesn’t like broccoli and flinches at loud noises and cries if you make him wear jeans but so does his dad and so does his dad’s mom, so obviously it can’t be that strange, right? nothing to worry about. and Karen can’t sit in quiet places and she fidgets constantly with her skin and she speaks so fast no one can understand her, just like her aunt and her mom, so it’s not a big deal, obviously. if you’re thinking about getting a diagnosis but keep telling yourself it’s ‘normal’ - it really isn’t, that may well just be your family.

if little shop of horrors came out today yall would be so horny for the plant. yall would ship it with the twinky little main dude and there’d be discourse over whether it was better to humanise the plant or not. there’d be humanised fanart of it as a skinny white dude in a green suit. i know yall too well and i know you can’t be trusted with the responsibility

AU where Waterbending masters get tattoos as well.
Once they complete the first stage of their training they get a new moon tattoo. The tattoo gets filled more for each stage they complete. Masters have a full moon tattoo to indicate their complete mastery.
