Lillian Boyer was one of the best known stunt people of the 1920s.  A former waitress, Lillian began her career as an aerial performer on a lark but quickly made it her profession.  For $100 a day, Lillian walked on the wings of planes, transferred herself from a moving car to a moving airplane, took parachute jumps, and hung off a plane by her teeth.  Stricter regulations ended her career in 1929 and Lillian fell into obscurity until historians became interested in her career towards the end of her life.
The photos shown above are all from the San Diego Air and Space Museum Flickr account, except for the wing walker photo which is from the Library of Congress.  For more details of Lillian’s life, read her 1989 LA Times obituary.

At Texas A&M there was a dead cockroach in the Anthropology building’s stairwell for at least two weeks. Some enterprising person made her a little shrine that quickly escalated.

All my thoughts these days go to my friends in Slovenia, who face a tough fight on sunday to protect the new family code against a reactionary and homophobe coalition. A referendum is held that day on the question if marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman or just between two consenting human beings of whatever gender. And while I honestly don't give a flying f*** if people marry or not, this one obviously goes way beyond my personal believe that marriage is an outdated institution.
The parliament of Slovenia adopted – by great majority – one of the most progressive family laws of Europe, strengthening the rights of ALL people to live as they choose to. The fact that Slovenia's constitutional court allowed rightwing and religious fundamentalists to stage this referendum on basic rights is a shame. In a way it's like asking a populist majority if they want to go on discriminating a minority. To be fair: 4 out of 9 judges didn't consider this to be a good idea. Close call, but what can you do?
You can fight. And this is what many of my friends and acquaintances in Slovenia do. With a great campaign and unbelievable personal commitment they do not put their hopes in a missed quorum or other formalities: They want to win. And they are very close. Opinion polls show an evenly split vote and I can barely imagine what these days must feel like for my friends. With all my heart and head I am with them. I hope they win. Big time.
Again: I am still not in favor of marriage but I strongly believe in the right for all to chain themselves lawfully to whomever they wish. And I am deeply sorry that I am not able to vote with those who fight for the right to perform this ridiculous medieval ritual. But who knows: Maybe I get my chance some day in Germany.
