In Tonia's eyes, a "proper" marriage is one where both parties well and truly love each other. Anything short of that isn't a real marriage and thus doesn't count as anything but a transactional sort of arrangement at best.

Which is to say, there's nothing emotional or meaningful in such a relationship—no reason to dwell on it with any actual seriousness or even sincerity, depending. It's like saying you're going to start a diet and then not doing that - insignificant and forgettable, a decision with no weight, and therefore, one is free to consider such a one-sided or lacking arrangement as something to brush aside with or without meaning for oneself.

Now, if this were a matter between two partners well and truly in a romance - well, in that case, Tonia would be very thoughtful.
