The Void: A thought for those on the fence

If you love a good creature feature then this film has it! At the start of the film we find that a man and a young boy shooting up a house with some strange symbols on the wall. Followed by the duo dragging a person out of the house and setting them on fire, while another escapes with his life. Then enters an officer who comes across this man and is immediately suspicious of why this stranger is running. Now the film moves to a hospital that’s being shutdown and moved to a brand new facility, but there’s a catch (when isn’t there one). It’s a special night for a particular group who await to go beyond this mortal life.

From here on out we are hot with strange behaviors from people while these weird robed people block everyone from leaving he hospital. The film captures that special thing that makes you think and wonder, just exactly what the hell is going! The deeper the film goes the darker it gets. When viewing this film you’ll get a sense of John Carpenter’s The Thing when these creatures pop up. The practical effects in this are absolutely beautiful and brilliant. The story is just solid from beginning, middle and end. You’ll watch again and again trying to make sense of what it is one man is trying to accomplish.

A Wes Craven Appreciation Post

I decided to one night rewatch some of Wes Craven’s films and think about why they’re so deliciously good. One of many things came to mind while watching The Last House on the Left, he captures how evil a person can be. Now when you get to his later work like Shocker or A Nightmare on Elm Street there’s some fantasy involved but he doesn’t lose that magic. What I find beautiful about his movies is that it draws you in to the horrors these people face as some evil force is hellbent in killing on them. It ranges from lunatics like David Hess’s character to James Whitworth’s character. Each of these characters just make you cringe and divert your eyes as they go after their prey.

In later years Wes would introduce us to a series of films that would take a jab at the film industry and the rules of the game. Scream became something of an underdog in the horror world. With a madman or woman, killing off Nev Campbell’s friends. Though the underlying tone of the films held true throughout, Scream 4 would answer that age old question about remakes. CLASSIC! He will be missed in the horror community.
