Behind the Storm (Storm Series Part 1) by inthegrayworld

Post-TFA, taking shelter from snowstorm together, VERY Explicit. Neither Ben/Kylo or Rey is naive in anyway about sex in this fic. I highly recommend the first two in the Storm series (each can be read as a stand alone, but they do build on each other), HOWEVER, if you choose to proceed to the third in the series, make sure you read the tags CAREFULLY and are fully okay with everything that happens in the third installment of the Storm series.

Post-TFA, Ben/Kylo and Rey each have a mission … if only they could remember what it is … and who they are. They conclude through a “feeling” that somehow they must know each other and should join together on their adventure … whatever it is. I love these canonverse amnesia trope fics that explore who these two believe they would be if the weight their identities carry was cast aside. (Heed my warnings about the third in this series as noted above in the Behind the Storm entry).

Post-TLJ, “Captured and forced to do it”. It was only a matter of time before someone realized two powerful users could make a super powerful one. As Ben/Kylo and Rey come to terms with their imprisoned predicament, a nicely written internal struggle for Ben/Kylo emerges.

WIP Series …

Oblivion Series by orphan_account

Post-TFA, Ben/Kylo and Rey have had enough of their respective sides and go AWOL. Serendipitously they run into each other accidentally … and then keep on running (in)to each other not so accidentally. This is a beautifully written series, so beautifully written that I am recommending giving it a try even though it is not only incomplete, it’s orphaned. It appears to have been planned in five parts, but only the first two fics are complete and the third 5/6 completed. However, even in its incompletion, it explores abandonment issues to desperate longing with a well contrived subplot in what feels a very natural progression for these two. It also features a very apt characterization of Rey, even more so than she’s depicted on screen - I’m not sure how to convey it, but this portrayal of Rey makes “sense” to me. She’s scrappy and always in a survivalist mode, socially awkward and just as lonely in a room full of people, but never lonely with Kylo/Ben. At any rate, it won’t be often that I recommend an incomplete, orphaned series, but with two completed fics and an almost completed third fic, there is enough here to enjoy.

The Way to Tomorrow by the-reylo-void 

Post-TFA Divergent.  Exiled Ben.  Luke Lives.  Sometime after the events of TFA, the Resistance wins the war and sentences Ben to a year of exile.  Thanks to the Force Bond, Ben’s not as alone as his exile had been meant to be.  Somber mood, with Ben doing some heavy reflection and soul searching, even Rey does a good dose of internal reflection. Nicely written “conversation courtship”.

I’ll Come for You in Silence by AJLynne 

Military AU.  Ben is a seasoned leader of a Blackhawk squad and Rey is an up and coming pilot.  The Reylo is fun and sexy, but the father/son moments with Han shine.   AJLynne writes action laden fics with fully fleshed out worlds and characters that are Hollywood worthy.  (I recommend all of these author’s fics).  

Serotonin and Dopamine by pontmercy44

Office AU.  Rey pursues a seemingly socially awkward coworker, Ben Solo.  Ben’s quiet with a vulnerability that draws Rey to him.  His bluntness and insecurity is endearing, but Ben’s hiding a mental illness from Rey, from everyone.  It’s already alienated him from his family and he worries revealing it could shake the ground of the stability he’s been able to build.  This is a much more somber toned Reylo that deals with how society projects and exacerbates fears of mental illness due to a lack of understanding them.  Emotionally heavy Ben POV as he struggles to understand why Rey would want him.  Conversely, after being abandoned by her parents when she was a child, Rey struggles with why they didn’t want her.

Office AU.  Rey works for an impossible Ben.  This nicely juxtaposes two alternating arcs: 1) Office moments between Rey and Ben from the time she started to work for him up to the time she receives an invitation to the masquerade; 2) a PWP taking place at the masquerade.  Steamy read nicely padded with a UST building backstory.

Office AU.  Begins as adversarial banter via Office Messenger, then Rey gets a look at him and pursues much more.  Ben’s a “tough guy” nerd (if that’s a thing), he’s intelligent and witty and manly and still encompasses the geek stereotype.  And my favorite … for a seemingly normal, if nerdy, IT guy, he is a total hot dominant freak in bed.  :D

Office Retreat AU.  Ben and Rey (and the rest of the Resistance and First Order star crew) all work at the same firm together, but in different departments.  To Rey’s chagrin the firm sends them on an office winter retreat at a (luxury) cabin in the woods.  Having always had an antagonistic relationship with Ben Solo and an adversarial one between their departments, Rey is less than excited to land the room next door to his … until she is excited. *wink, wink*  Rey’s peace-making, boss Poe, Ben’s smarmy, gay bff Hux, a no-holds-barred snowball fight and a cast of Star Wars favorites adapted to the modern day dynamics of corporate office life, make for a fun, (eventually) sexy office rivalry to lovers modern AU.

Coworker Weekend Getaway AU.  Rey’s the new girl at the office who inadvertently invites the office pariah, Ben Solo, to the weekend getaway.  A reservation mix up ends up with them in one room with one bed together.  Cute, sweet fic in which Ben’s internal turmoil over accepting the invitation is juxtaposed with his internal turmoil upon waking up with her in bed.

Coworkers on Assignment AU.  Office adversaries Ben and Rey are on assignment together.  A hotel reservation mix-up puts them together in one room with one bed.  Rey needs to trust Ben so they can get the job done … then Ben gets the job done. ;)  Nice tension with sweet, sexy HEA.

Office AU.  Rey finds her voice to ask for what exactly she wants, then she teaches Ben how to ask for what he wants.  Little more than a steamy PWP, but Ben being the “enemy” of the office adds a nice layer of tension.

Reckless Behavior by @shipatfirstsight​

Post-TFA Divergent.  This fic features a sexually confident Rey who introduces an eager virgin Kylo to pleasure.  The Reylo dynamic is fun and cheeky, it begins as a game of sorts to find daring places that they can explore this new aspect of their relationship with one another.  With a smoking hot opening scene that sets the tone of the fic, an appearance by Matt the Radar tech and an ending author note that made me laugh out loud, this fic has become a guilty pleasure of mine.  

Bathwater by Hormonal_Trashbag

TFA Divergent, but begins with a “pre-TFA snippet”.  The Reylo arc evolves over a full spectrum of stages from purely sexual attraction to power struggle to stark emotions to passion to unwavering love.  A Rey that is baffled (and embarrassed) by her inexplicable attraction to Kylo, who she believes would never want more than a booty call is contrasted by a Kylo who is made to feel so much by Rey that builds walls to protect himself from how much these booty calls mean.  Delightfully steamy as the power struggle begins to crack and lets the affection flow.  

The Black Forest by @littlethingsfic (theselittlethings) 

Post-TLJ Divergent.  This fic is some of the best erotica that I’ve ever read.  Extremely well written, from prose, pacing, arcs, characterizations and crafting the tone of the setting.   The horror arc adds a nice creepiness to the atmosphere, but subtle enough to lull Rey, Ben/Kylo and the reader into forgetting about it until it bites - the heaping of unadulterated sex serves as a welcome distraction to investigating what is haunting the forest.  The Reylo arc starts as a sexually titillating game and leads to an emotionally confusing love story, while the reader is treated to a haunting, but satisfying conclusion.

Forms by Trebia

Post-TFA Divergent.  This is a classic in the Reylo fandom.  The Reylo arc begins with a tentative truce of sorts, though mistrust, suspicion (perhaps regret) linger between them unsaid as they navigate a growing “inconvenient” affection.  When decisions are finally made, they are ardent and determined.  Full Reylo arc from mutual tolerance to HEA, delivered with a well crafted subplot that buttresses the Reylo arc.      

WIP to Watch 

Watch Me Drown by @mygrandmathinksimsassy (sasstasticmad)

Post-TFA Divergent.  Dominant Kylo/Submissive Rey, no BDSM - I’d characterize this more as Kylo takes control in the bedroom.  The Reylo arc starts with adrenaline fueled hate sex, the dynamic begins with antagonistic banter, softens as the subplot steers them into working together and making decisions that reveal an underlying growing affection.  

I don’t normally rec WIPs (works in progress), but this is worth the read even if you just read each chapter as a PWP.  Also, the last update (as of 12/03/2019) was 06/02/2019 for a fic started in 2016, which leads me to believe (read: remain hopeful) that the author hasn’t abandoned it.

Note: I’m distinguishing these from Canonverse and AU’s in the fact that the characters are canon, with canon identities, but through some unusual course of action they wake up or find themselves in some type of alternate reality while retaining their canon memories. The characters remain canon, the setting does not. 

Faltering Beacons by @angharabbit

Absolutely beautifully written and delightful to read. Diverges from canon post-TLJ when Kylo and Rey find themselves sucked through a wormhole and crash land on Earth in the (ironically) fictional Anne of Green Gables community of Avonlea. I love the fact that the author didn’t just hop realities with these characters, she hopped them into a different book. Kylo and Rey navigating the “primitive” society of Avonlea with the perspective they have from their galactic world is simply engrossing. I enjoyed the subtle comparison between Rey and Anne (who never makes an appearance) as orphans, who are as headstrong as they are vulnerable. Unique in concept, exquisite in execution. 

This Together, Any Together by @shipatfirstsight 

Well written portrayal of a very antagonistic canon Kylo and Rey dynamic progressing into a domestic portrait of the two after they wake up married on modern day Earth. Diverges from canon post-TFA. The very meta touch that on Earth Ben and Rey are married authors who gained popularity from a book they wrote together and are now, supposedly, working on how the sequel, is brilliant. The Reylo arc is nicely developed, but what is most endearing is the interactions between Ben and Han (who is alive in this reality). Ben’s longing for a relationship with this version of his father, who isn’t scared of him in this reality, is bittersweet.

Why they are one of my Reylo Faves

In build a ladder to the stars, @redbelles prose are well crafted, but it’s the way they build a story through snippets of moments strung together on a linear, but undefined timeline that provides for a lyrical quality to their work.  Similar in methodology to angharabbit’s Accusations: 26 Reylo Ficlets, but more poetic in execution.  To be clear, these are not compiled vignettes, but a story of moments (similar in style (not delivery) to Evan S. Connell’s Mrs. Bridge).  Subtle in plot, heavy in Kylo’s internal reflection and Rey’s internal turmoil.  Too much of an arc to be mere character studies, but the characterizations are nearly perfect, I might consider this more of a “relationship/connection study” - as clearly it’s been well thought out by the author, not only who these characters are and what they look like fleshed out, but also how they would interact and connect - and what that looks like fleshed out.  Through all the myriad of allegorical introspection these two jump through, the poetic fact that Kylo Ren’s heart is a desert and Rey is well adapted to navigating (and surviving) a desert is beautiful in it’s simplicity.  

stuck in the cold is one of those fics that will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers, but I think is being missed because of the summary.  So here’s the gist: it’s a modern AU of financially struggling, tough barista Rey pining for awkward, but proper professor Kylo (who is also pining for Rey) being gifted a chance by fate when a snowstorm makes for a “stuck together” situation.  This fic masquerades as a PWP, but is packed with tender longing fueling a chemistry that delivers a ... climax.  Under 10k words, it’s an enjoyable half hour fic before bedtime to leave you with a smile and sweet dreams.  

The Bottom Line 

redbelles has fleshed out versions of Rey and Kylo, and in turn fleshed out a version of “Reylo”, in a curated style that provides for a unique crafting of the Reylo dynamic and well-written, satisfying fics to the fandom.

Any of the plethora of their bite-sized Reylo PWPs.  Every desired rough touch is tempered with tender feelings lurking between the lines in the tension spoken between them.  One of my faves being Breathe.  

Why they are one of my Reylo Faves

I’ve been in and out of so many different fandoms for so long, I’ve become accustomed to skimming or even skipping the explicit scenes.  When theselittlethings writes one, I read every word (and then go take a cold shower).  Emotional context (whatever emotion it is - love, longing, curiosity, anger, passion, lust, adrenaline fueled, etc.) makes or breaks a steamy scene.  theselittlethings has mastered the knack of building the emotional and sexual tension to climax in sync - leaving both Rey and Ben/Kylo, as well as the reader satiated.  

The Black Forest is clearly the stand out gem of their works.  Extremely well-written in prose, pacing, converging arcs (Reylo, Resistance and horror arcs), strong characterizations and development of Reylo dynamic.  Honestly this isn’t just one of the best Reylos, it’s a pretty stunning, well developed story.  If you are side-eyeing the the “horror arc”, know it is tame and so subtle that it lulls Rey, Ben/Kylo and the reader into forgetting about it until it bites - the heaping of unadulterated sex serves as a welcome distraction to all.  The Black Forest navigates Ben/Kylo and Rey through a sexually titillating, emotionally confusing love story while the reader is treated to a haunting, but satisfying conclusion.  I’ve had to mine a lot of mountains to find this gem, so go read The Black Forest and check out this author.

FAVE REYLO FANFIC AUTHORS MASTER POST

I’ve been through so many fandoms, I often find that finding the key authors whose style you connect with, is the best way to find the fic gems of the fandom.  Instead of making “fic rec posts” that are often lengthy and contain a mishmash of tropes and styles and mixes of canon and AU’s, as I find the nuggets that shine for me I’ll be posting author recommendations that give more of an overview of their works and style and why they are a “go to” author for me in this fandom.  

I’ve also noticed that in this fandom, in particular, so many of the fics that I would consider five stars and standout gems (especially for those set in-universe) are simply underappreciated or undiscovered authors of the fandom.

Why they are one of my Reylo faves

angharabbit may be the most underappreciated writer in the Reylo fandom.  One of the best in-universe Reylos, Pulling Apart the Coils, has a measly 3111 hits and 232 kudos.  Out of their six completed (two more still works in progress) Reylos, I’d consider four as must reads in the fandom.  All their fics are pleasantly engaging and extremely well written (from prose, pacing, arc development, characterizations and capturing the Reylo dynamic).  

Though two completely separate, fully developed Reylo stories set in the canon universe, both Pulling Apart the Coils and Accusations: 26 Reylo Fics, weave Rey, Ben/Kylo and the reader through Reylo love stories, starting by examining their postured hostility towards each other as it gives way to exposing the vulnerability of their loneliness and revealing glimpses of their humanity to each other.  As the sexual tension builds, their emotional connection solidifies and as their individual situations become more precarious they are forced to once again stand on a precipice of a choice.  Sexy, angsty and so full of longing, if you enjoy in-universe Reylos, these are ones not to miss.  

Faltering Beacons was a complete delight I almost missed.  As the fic starts in-universe, it diverges when Rey and Ben/Kylo crash separately on Earth and are forced to navigate the “primitive” Avonlea society in the early 20th century.  It’s darling while also steamy and angsty - unexpected combos and an unexpected, well contrived gem.  

Rounding out their offerings, Public Participation is angarabbit’s most popular fic and a highlight for those that enjoy Reylo AU’s.  It’s a modern AU that has so many nods to canon that it is basically a retelling of TFA and TLJ set in present day as a heritage planner and architect face off over a historic building.  the name of the fanfic and Perspective are also both worth a read for a smile.  

The Bottom Line

Every time I finish a fic by angharabbit, I feel good.  The Reylo progression and Reylo HEA that angharabbit writes are ones that I think, “yes, I’ll buy it, this makes sense for Rey and Ben/Kylo, this is what I’d want for them” and fully engages me through their journey.  If you are looking for feel good, satisfying Reylo reads that leave you satisfied with the journey Rey and Ben/Kylo take as well as where they are left as the fic concludes, I recommend checking out angarabbit.

REYLO FAVES and RECS

In Universe Fics: 

Black Gloves, Orange Soup by Solia: Perfect Reylo. Spot on characterizations and reylo dynamic. So many feels with an undercurrent of sadness (and longing). Needs a sequel.  

I’ll take it by your side by Ever-so-Reylo:  The Reylo to start off the fandom with. Good characterizations, pace, reylo arc and progression. Right amount of angst to longing with feel good HEA.

Forms by Trebia:  Reylo Fandom Favorite. Classic, the longing, the adoration building, the physical expressions, both of them lost, smitten lovers, Star-crossed Lovers in a galactic setting searching for their HEA.

Reckless Behavior by shipatfirstsight:  I picked this up thinking it would be a diverting PWP - then it sprung feelings and became one of my favorite Reylos. Fun, sexy, edgy and the feels. This sexy Reylo nugget is a must read and repeat. Kylo is the right amount of awkward and sincere, while Rey is a cheeky instigator who exercises full agency over her body and heart.

build a ladder to the stars by redbelles:  Nearly perfect Reylo.

Bathwater by Hormonal_Trashbag:  Starts off as a series of PWPs with feels/angst/want slipping in as the story progresses. (CHAPTER 7 - LAY THOSE FEELS BARE!) Listed as complete and a complete arc is written, but I believe the author may be adding more to this story as a second arc is being set up at the end of chapter 11.

Tension/Balance by KerylRaist:  A saga worth reading. Good characterizations, probable reylo arc that progresses into a "realistic" domesticity. Extremely well written, appears to be a professional writer. No cliffhanger, it's not necessary to continue with sequels, but they were just as good.

The Black Forest by theselittlethings:  Perfect characterizations, prose, pacing, plotting, well balanced Reylo arc to Horror plot arc. (Sweating it out steamy sex scenes with nice undercurrent of angsty feels).

A Figure in Black by Hormonal_Trashbag:  Loved every moment of this mother-son confrontation. Leia POV (of which there are so few, but should be more of). I feel like this is a missing scene from one of the author's other fics? Want a sequel (this felt like a prequel to more ... ). Reylo Fics that explore the mother-son confrontation so genuinely are so few and this one nails it. 

World in my Eyes by Sasstasticmad:  Another fun Reylo starter. Explores the Force Bond, nice Reylo arc progression with the right amount of angst. And for 96k+ words it actually didn't feel like a saga.

Divergent Universe

Find a Thread to pull and we can watch it unravel by again_please:  Moody Ben doesn't believe he is worthy of Rey, but longing for her all the same. Enjoyable.

Conscience and Unconsciousness by Pontmercy44:  I'm a Reylo whore with a penchant for romantic comedies. This While You Were Sleeping AU ticked every box.

How much can Kylo Ren Endure this Christmas? by reylology:  Fun and engaging, read like a Reylo romcom.

Dime Bag Darling by violethoure666:  HS AU where Rey is the girl on the "wrong side of the tracks" and Ben is the cool, rich kid. Of course they could always bond over their self-deprecating issues, but they are bad at communicating ... until they're not.
