I believe Ashes' lungs also allow them to breathe underwater. So they can just sit at the bottom of a body of water for however long they please. Water puts out most flames so they get bored easily with the limitations but nonetheless find the advantages.

I also headcanon that Jonny hates water so Ashes probably sat down there in some body of water planetside waiting for Jonny to get close enough to drag him down by the ankles. Ashes accidentally created the Sirens myth on a planet this way.
