DUBLIN — Ireland’s leftist president, Michael D. Higgins, easily won a second term on Saturday despite a late surge by a former reality show celebrity whose support soared after he criticized an ethnic minority group.
In a separate ballot, voters also appeared ready to abolish a constitutional ban on blasphemy. The vote count was still underway on Saturday night, but exit polls suggested that around 70 percent of voters supported repealing the ban, which in practice had never led to a prosecution.
Mr. Higgins’s re-election to the presidency, a largely ceremonial position, was never really in doubt and he won comfortably with about 56 percent of the vote. But the gains made by Peter Casey, a former panelist on Ireland’s “Dragon’s Den” reality show, drew considerable attention in the final days of the race.
Mr. Casey saw his support leap from 2 percent in opinion polls conducted two weeks ago to about 23 percent in the election itself, lifting him from last in the six-candidate pack to second. Voting closed on Friday, with the results announced on Saturday night.
The dramatic rise in support for Mr. Casey, 61, a businessman, followed the release of a podcast interview in which he criticized the Irish Travellers’ official status as an ethnic minority, recognized by Parliament last year.
The Travellers are a traditionally nomadic indigenous group. Ethnically Irish in origin, they are believed to have diverged from the general population many generations ago, developing their own variant of the Irish dialect and culture.
Mr. Casey had said that the Travellers were “basically people camping in someone else’s land” and that their separate ethnic status was nonsense. He also accused the Travellers of failing to pay taxes and of driving down home prices wherever they live.
“The Casey vote shows that Ireland, like any other Western country, is not immune from the populism we are seeing around the world,” said Noel Whelan, a political analyst. “The tactic he used was the same one we’ve seen in America and elsewhere, where you attack a vulnerable element of society and accuse them of being ungrateful and causing social problems.”
Mr. Casey was one of three panelists from the “Dragon’s Den” to run in the election. All three had argued that their experience as businessmen would help them to do a better job as president than Mr. Higgins, an academic, poet and former parliamentarian for the center-left Labour Party.
In the last presidential election, in 2011, one of those reality show celebrities, Sean Gallagher, came close to defeating Mr. Higgins. Mr. Gallagher, who is also a former fund-raiser for the center-right Fianna Fail Party, finished third this time.
In an impassioned speech at Dublin Castle Saturday night, Mr. Higgins said voters had faced stark decisions about the “character of our Irishness.”
“The people have made a choice as to which version of Irishness they want reflected at home and abroad,” he said. “It is the making of hope they wish to share, rather than the experience of any exploitation of division or fear.”
The results were a setback for Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army. The party ignored the longstanding convention against challenging presidential incumbents seeking second terms, putting forward a candidate to test its national strength.
Its candidate, Liadh ní Riada, finished fourth with only about 6 percent of the vote, considerably less than the party’s 14 percent support over all in the most recent national survey.
The absence of any heavyweight challenger to Mr. Higgins was reflected in the turnout, which was down by a third from the 64.5 percent who came out earlier this year for the referendum that abolished Ireland’s constitutional ban on abortion.
The blasphemy vote was more symbolic than practical. No one has ever been prosecuted for blasphemy in modern Ireland, but rights groups said that the existence of the ban was used by repressive governments to argue in support of their own restrictions.
In the lead-up to the vote, the Catholic Church weighed in to say that the Irish constitutional clause was “largely obsolete.”

David Warner has scored 155* and 157 while playing for Randwick-Petersham in the NSW Premier Cricket
Former Australia vice-captain David Warner walked off the field in protest while batting in a grade cricket match, in what Cricket Australia has described as a “sledging incident”.
Warner, 32, was banned from international and state cricket in March after a ball-tampering scandal.
The batsman was playing for club side Randwick-Petersham and decided to leave the field when he was unbeaten on 35.
Opponents Western Suburbs allowed him to return and he went on to score 157.
The laws of the game state that once a batsman has left the field of play they cannot return, unless they retire with injury or illness, when they can come back at the fall of a wicket.
But Western Suburbs were reportedly happy for Warner to resume his innings after a few minutes off the field.
Cricket Australia says it understands the player involved was Jason Hughes, brother of former Australia Test player Phillip Hughes, but have not given any details of the sledging, other that it turned “personal” and “nasty”.
Phillip Hughes died in 2014, two days after being struck on the top of the neck by a ball while playing for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales in Sydney.
Warner has been involved in plenty of confrontations with opponents during his international career – such as when he called on India batsman Rohit Sharma to “speak English” during an on-field row in 2015, while earlier this year he was fined by the International Cricket Council after an altercation with South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.
In 2013, Warner admitted he “went a little bit too far” after describing England batsman Jonathan Trott as “poor and weak” during an Ashes Test, before Trott flew home with a stress-related condition.

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Palestinian militants said on Saturday they would halt attacks into Israel from the Gaza Strip after they fired the heaviest rocket salvoes across the border since August.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, one of the armed groups that operates in Gaza, said it fired the rockets in retaliation for Israel’s killing of four Palestinian protesters on Friday.
Israel in response struck dozens of targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
A spokesman for the militants said an Egyptian-mediated truce had been reached.
“After contacts between the Islamic Jihad leadership and the brothers in Egypt it was agreed that a comprehensive ceasefire will begin immediately,” spokesman Daoud Shehab said. “The Islamic Jihad will abide by the ceasefire if the occupation (Israel) does the same.”
Egyptian security officials have been talking separately to Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an attempt to restore calm along the border.
An Israeli military spokeswoman declined comment on Shehab’s remarks and there was no immediate response from other Israeli officials. Israel rarely acknowledges it has reached a truce with Gaza’s militant groups which it designates as terrorist organizations.
Earlier, Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus accused Syria and Iran of involvement in the rocket attack.
“Orders and incentives were given from Damascus with a clear involvement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards al-Quds force,” Conricus told reporters. “Our response is not limited geographically.”
Israel regularly accuses Iran of aiding Gaza militants, but rarely levels the charge in connection with a specific rocket attack.
WEEKLY PROTESTS
Shehab dismissed the allegation as “an Israeli attempt to escape its responsibility” for Friday’s protest deaths.
There were no casualties reported from the heavy exchange of fire in either Israel or Gaza, which is controlled by the Islamist Hamas group.
The Israeli military said it holds Hamas accountable for the events in Gaza. It said its air force hit more than 80 targets including one used by Hamas as a headquarters, in response to more than 30 rockets launched into Israel. There was no immediate comment from Hamas.
The flare-up began after the four Palestinians were killed on Friday during weekly protests. Israel said its forces were attacked with explosive devices and some demonstrators breached the border.
Palestinians have been protesting along the frontier since March 30, demanding an end to an Israeli blockade and the right to return to lands from which they fled or were driven from when Israel was founded in 1948.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 213 Gazans have been killed by Israeli forces during the protests. An Israeli soldier was killed by a Palestinian sniper.
About two million Palestinians are packed into the Gaza Strip which is in a deep economic crisis. Israel says it keeps a naval blockade and tight control of its land crossings with the enclave for security reasons.
Israel has struck scores of times inside Syria during the seven-year civil war there, at what it has said were Iranian targets or Teheran’s transfers of weapons to Hezbollah fighters.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka’s president suspended parliament on Saturday even as the prime minister he fired the previous day claimed he has majority support, adding to a growing political crisis in the South Asian island nation.
Chaminda Gamage, a spokesman for the parliamentary speaker, confirmed that President Maithripala Sirisena had suspended parliament until Nov. 16.
The suspension came while ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was holding a news conference in which he asserted that he could prove his majority support in parliament.
Sirisena sacked Wickremesinghe and his Cabinet on Friday and replaced him with former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa, creating what some observers said could be a constitutional crisis.
The suspension of parliament is expected to give Rajapaksa time to try to muster enough support to survive any no confidence vote.
Several members of Rajapaksa’s family — former Cabinet members and government officials — are facing charges of corruption. Rajapaksa’s appointment as prime minister is expected to provide relief to them.
Wickremesingh said at the news conference that parliament should be allowed to resolve the political crisis.
“As far as the prime ministership is concerned, the person who has the majority support in parliament has to be the prime minister, and I have that majority of support,” he said. “When a motion of no confidence was moved (in the past), we defeated it, showing that the house has the confidence in me.”
“It is not necessary for us to create a crisis. It is not necessary for the people of the country to suffer,” Wickremesingh said.
An Indian External Affairs Ministry official said New Delhi “is aware of the developments and watching the situation closely.”
Sri Lanka became a center for the India-China rivalry for control of the Indian Ocean region during Rajapaksa’s presidency, which displayed heavy pro-China leanings. His government provided for the outright sale of land for an artificial island being developed by China with an investment of $1.5 billion.
But the possibility of China’s presence in an area separated from Indian territory by only the narrow Palk Strait upset India.
Wickremesinghe, who was in charge of the economy as prime minister, scrapped the clause in the deal with Beijing allowing outright land ownership.
Tensions have been building between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe for some time, as the president also did not approve of some of the economic reforms being introduced by the prime minister. Sirisena was also critical of police investigations into military personnel accused in the abductions and disappearances of civilians and journalists during Sri Lanka’s long civil war.
Rajapaksa ruled Sri Lanka as president for nine years beginning in 2005, accumulating immense power and popularity among the country’s majority ethnic Sinhalese after overseeing the military’s brutal defeat of ethnic Tamil rebels in May 2009, ending the 25-year civil war. Some supporters hailed him as a king and savior.
But he also was criticized for failing to allow an investigation into allegations of war crimes by the military. Under his government, dozens of journalists were killed, abducted and tortured and some fled the country fearing for their lives. He lost a bid for re-election in 2015 amid mounting allegations of corruption and nepotism.
His return to power as prime minister could signal that Sri Lanka is sliding back to an era of violence against political opponents, critics and journalists, observers said.

TAIPEI (Reuters) – Hundreds of thousands marched through Taiwan’s capital on Saturday to press the government to deliver on its promise of marriage equality amid an increasingly heated debate over whether civil laws should recognize same-sex marriage.

In Asia’s first such ruling, Taiwan’s constitutional court declared in May last year that same-sex couples had the right to legally marry, and set a two-year deadline for legalization.
But the self-ruled island will hold a series of public votes on same-sex marriage on November 24, after its election authority approved separate referendum petitions from both conservative and rights groups.
The move has revived a debate over a possible separate law for civil unions between gay couples and presents a challenge to President Tsai Ing-wen, who rights activists say has made little progress on the issue despite campaigning on a promise of marriage equality in the run-up to elections in 2016.
The 16th annual parade in Taipei, the largest of its kind in East Asia, featured colorful costumes, musical performances and rainbow flags as protesters gathered near the Presidential Office.
Many called the proposal to make a separate law for gay marriage “discriminatory”, citing the 2017 ruling that current laws violate the right to freedom of marriage and equality.
Carrying banners that said “vote for your happy future,” the marchers shouted “defeat discrimination”.
“We will use our vote to tell Tsai Ing-wen’s government that people want marriage equality,” said Miao Poya, who joined the parade and was one of the activists who proposed a referendum in favor of same-sex marriage.
Organizers said some 137,000 attended the Saturday parade.
Society is still divided on same-sex marriage, Tsai said this year, but the government would abide by the constitutional court ruling of May 2017.
The public votes will coincide with mayoral and magisterial elections on the democratic island, which is seen as a beacon of liberalism in the region.

The Chris Waller-trained seven-year-old was securing her 29th straight win, stretching back to April 2015, 22 of them in Group One races.
“I can’t believe it,” said jockey Hugh Bowman, who timed his run perfectly in the home straight. “I’m just proud to be part of this amazing story.”
The pre-race talk had centered around the threat posed by Benbatl from the powerful Godolphin string, trained by Saeed bin Suroor, putting Winx’s winning streak under threat, but the fears proved unfounded.
“I really felt (the pressure) this week, more than I have before,” admitted Bowman.
Bowman had Winx well-placed from the start of the 10-furlong (2040m) test, with Benbatl, ridden by Oisin Murphy, and Aidan O’Brien’s runner Rostropovich also prominent.
Ryan Moore made the first move for home with Rostropovich followed by Benbatl, but Winx tracked them both before unleashing her run to devastating effect.
“Winx is a superstar, the best of the best,” beaten trainer Saeed bin Suroor said.
“Benbatl ran a good race but she is something special.”
Humidor finished third.
It was the dream result for the darling of Australian horse racing in front of an expectant home crowd.
“Everyone watching gets so much joy and pleasure out of the superb ability of this wonderful horse. The fact she’s been able to do it so many times consecutively just speaks volumes for the management of her,” added Bowman.
Record-breaking Winx
With career winnings of $14 million and a string of records, she broke the legendary Black Caviar’s Australian win mark earlier this year, Winx may now be drawing to the end of her racing career.
Waller would not be drawn on her future ahead of the famous Cox Plate race which has been held every year since 1922, but Winx has already etched her place in racing history.

Turkish authorities claim a Saudi hit squad of 15 men flew to Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Turkey, where they tortured, killed, and dismembered the writer critical of the Saudi leadership.
The kingdom initially denied any involvement in the slaying, but later admitted the killing was premeditated.
But Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat said Saturday that the global outrage over the killing has become “hysterical,” though noting that the real culprits will be brought to justice.
“This issue has become fairly hysterical,” Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said, adding that the Saudi leadership has made it “very clear that those responsible will be held responsible.”

Mattis’ speech revealed the challenge the Trump administration is facing amid the issue that caused worldwide outrage.
While the U.S. defense chief slammed Iran and spoke out about ongoing attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen, he didn’t mention Saudi Arabia’s role in the conflict, including its alleged indiscriminate bombings of civilians.
“I reiterate U.S. support for our partners’ right to defend themselves against Iranian-supplied Houthi attacks on their sovereign territory, and at the same time call for an urgent end to the fighting,” Mattis said.
In another part of the speech, Mattis spoke about America’s shared interest with Arab and Israeli partners in the region, saying “our respect for the Saudi people is undiminished” though warned that respect “must come with transparency and trust.”

MANAMA (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Saturday that those behind the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi would be prosecuted in the kingdom and that the investigation would take time.
Jubeir told a security summit in Bahrain that Riyadh’s relations with the United States were “ironclad” amid what he described as “media hysteria” over the killing of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, which sparked a global outcry and strained the kingdom’s ties with the West.
The minister also said the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has a “rational, realistic” foreign policy that all Gulf Arab states can support. He said Saudi Arabia was combating Iran’s vision of “darkness” in the Middle East.

Former President Barack Obama leveled his most direct criticism of President Donald Trump on Friday in speeches in Detroit and Milwaukee while stumping for Democratic candidates.
Not mentioning Trump by name, Obama said the “character of our country is on the ballot” in November’s midterm elections. He also cited Trump’s promise to pass a tax cut before voters go to the polls.
“Congress isn’t even in session before the election!,” Obama said. “He just makes it up!”
In Milwaukee, Obama said: “Here’s the thing. Everything I say you can look up.”
In Michigan, he credited gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer for helping to expand Medicaid, saying, “Few people fought against it harder” than her Republican challenger, state Attorney General Bill Schuette, the Detroit News reported.
In 2016, the state supported Trump over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“I’m hopeful, Michigan,” Obama told the crowd in a 5,000-seat gymnasium. “I’m hopeful that despite all the noise, despite all the lies, we’re going to come through all that. We’re going to remember who we are, who we’re called to be. I’m hopeful because out of this political darkness, I’m seeing a great awakening.”
In Milwaukee, Obama criticized Republican Gov. Scott Walker — who is being challenged by Democrat Tony Evers — for claiming that he wants to protect health care for those with pre-existing conditions, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.
“What we have not seen before in our public life is politicians just blatantly, repeatedly, baldly, shamelessly, lying. Just making stuff up,” Obama said. “Calling up, down. Calling black, white. That’s what your governor is doing with these ads, just making stuff up,”
Obama held up Clinton’s email scandal as an example of the Republican Party’s hypocrisy.
“In the last election, it was Hillary’s emails. ‘This is terrible’ … ‘This is a national security crisis,’” he said. “They didn’t care about emails and you know how you know? Because if they did, they’d be up in arms right now that the Chinese are listening to the president’s iPhone that he leaves in his golf cart.”
He also took aim at Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp.”
“In Washington they have racked up enough indictments to field a football team,” he said. “Nobody in my administration got indicted.”
Trump and Obama have escalated the level of criticism of each other in recent months.
Trump has criticized his predecessor for trying to downplay his economic record, boasting that he had a magic wand to expedite the economic recovery.
“I opened up our beautiful economic engine with Regulation and Tax Cuts. Our system was choking and would have been made worse. Still plenty to do!” Trump once tweeted.
Regarding immigration, which Obama and Democrats have criticized his stringent policies, Trump cited a 2005 video featuring Obama making a statement against illegal immigration, accompanied by the comment “I agree with President Obama 100%.”
Additionally, Trump has defended his foreign policy record, which he claims has made America stronger, such as his tough stance with China and pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and other agreements viewed by some as not being in America’s best interests.
Obama’s criticism wasn’t just directed at Trump. He also scorned Republicans for trying to distract voters from critical issues.
Instead of talking about water in Flint, Mich., Trump is firing up his base by talking about “impoverished refuges 1,000 miles away,” he said about the Honduran migrant caravan making its way toward the U.S.
But Obama has faced criticism over the Flint water crisis as well. Some accused the Environmental Protection Agency under his watch of not displaying a sense of urgency during the situation demanded.
Many Obama supporters also criticized Obama after he took a sip of the city’s filted tap water, to convince residents that it was safe to drink.
“It was such a disappointing thing to see,” filmmaker Michael Moore said, according to the Detroit Free Press.
