He’s right; she hasn’t really heard him out, but she doesn’t want to. Not right now, when she has so much to get caught up on, and he’ll have to go back to Coruscant any day now, anyway. She’s angry -- not at him, it isn’t his fault, but she’s still angry -- and she’s grieving, and she’s trying desperately to maintain the integrity of her ability to rule as Queen despite the inner turmoil she’s going through. 

It isn’t as though she doubts the love or loyalty of her people, but rather that she feels the inexplicable need to prove to herself that she’s still capable of at least this one thing. Ruling. Being Queen. Her people deserve it. 

So she doesn’t have time to weep anymore, she doesn’t have time to listen to Bail console her, she doesn’t want to hear whatever sweet words of sympathy he undoubtedly has to bestow upon her. Not now, when she feels so fragile that one more tear might shatter her into a thousand tiny shards of glass. 

“I can’t right now, Bail. I have a meeting with the Board of Educators that I’m nearly late for, and I must see to the petitioner farmers after, I already had to reschedule twice. We’ll talk tonight after dinner,” Breha adds, even though she’s half certain that she’ll find some new excuse after dinner. 

She just doesn’t want to talk right now.

“Mmm, is that so?” Breha smiles coyly through her sultry purr, the holo propped up on Bail’s empty pillow where she can see him without needing to keep holding the holo. She misses him through these long separations, though she would not dream of telling him to resign his position as Senator and come home to Alderaan to be only her husband. He loves his political career, and he is good for Alderaan as their Senator. Even if it means that their Queen must miss her husband for weeks or months at a time when he is on Coruscant being their voice in the Senate. 

Their frequent holo calls help ease the loneliness of separation, though are still a poor substitute for the warm embrace of his arms around her while she sleeps. “And what else do you see, my love?”

She smiles faintly, knowing what he means, and remembering well the times in her life when those around her had assumed that she was too young and inexperienced to be as clever as she was. For a while, it had frustrated her, until Deara had quite wisely suggested that she just use it to her advantage. Use it to watch and learn. Then she had, and it had actually been more effective than she’d initially thought it would be, when she had wanted to immediately and always be taken as seriously as she had thought that being Crown Princess entitled her to be. 

“Let them underestimate you and then prove them wrong,” Breha suggests, handing the young pilot a pack of rations. “Then you’ll always have the element of surprise.”

Her words are little more than a tease, of course, for she has already forgiven him the lateness of his arrival. As much as she longs for him to be by her side more often than this war tearing the galaxy apart allows, she understands as well as he does that the sacrifices they make are for the good and security of their people, as well as the galaxy at large. As much as she hates the long and frequent separations, she is constantly proud of him for everything that he does.

miscellaneous headcanons regarding adoption and child care on Alderaan. 

adoption is not taboo on Alderaan, and though there are legal requirements for adoption put in place to protect the child, there is no requirement ( or social norm ) for things like marriage prior to adopting. ( a single, unmarried citizen, a same-sex married couple, a heterosexual married couple, an inter-species married couple, and an unmarried couple all would have the same chance at being approved for adopting. ) 

there is also no requirement that a parent be of the same species as the child they wish to adopt. there used to be, under the old assumption that it was better for the child to have a parent or parents their same species, but Breha abolished that law during the Clone Wars when her citizens were unable to legally adopt refugee children of another species. 

for parents who adopt a child of a different species, there is a requirement to meet with a counselor of the child’s species regularly to ensure that the child is being properly cared for as any child of their species would need to be.

children out of wedlock are not looked down on, and there is no word in Alderaanian culture for a ‘bastard’ child; Alderaan does not recognize the definition of a child being a ‘bastard’ child even when the word is used in Basic. 

children out of wedlock and adopted children have the same inherited rights as a child born to two married citizens. 

Alderaan has a foster care system, and it is considered an honor in Alderaanian culture to be a foster parent. there are strict requirements for being a foster parent, and for the level of care provided to the child.
