Helluva Broken Narrative and the most useless character..

Disclaimer: Not saying you can't enjoy this show folks. Enjoy it all you want, this is just a rant about the lack of a cohesive narrative!

I really was completely dead on posting, but I just can't get this out of my head.

I feel people should be acknowledging this far more than it has been, this is extremely important. This goes beyond just episode pacing, this goes beyond the characters....this is something that without it? There is no real show, which is....

Helluva Boss has a BROKEN NARRATIVE.

Some fans wanna claim it has this 'complex' writing and I'm sitting here going like "really? Where?"

It doesn't sorry and know why? Because Season 2 of this show, basically broke the narrative that Season 1 was building.

These past posts of mine, will show you why the narrative is broken.

Now can they continue on with the story they are telling? Yes of course they can, but it won't fix the fact that it's not coherent to Season 1, that it's not needed.

Wanna know who the most useless character in the show is now? If you guessed Stolas, you're correct! In the meaning of making Stolas this guy who did nothing wrong and who's sad....they took away his character purpose.

Stolas has ZERO purpose being within the show now, given how things have played out.

But you might say

"Well he's needed to give Blitz the Crystal and end the deal!"

Except....no, he wasn't. Remembering my posts above, where you can have I.M.P. killing in Hell as a Season 1 thing?

Maybe they're just getting started with their company? So Blitz wants to supplement with killing in Hell by killing those up top so he goes to see about getting an Asmodean Crystal?

See let's backtrack here folks, the episode Oops it was mainly about Blitz and Fizz reconciling right? Which they do at the end of the episode. Now follow this, if we take into account the above, Blitz' dialogue could be.

Blitz: "Fizz look, I know what happened to you was horrible. I don't...expect you to forgive me, but I'm struggling to support myself, my daughter and my employees with my company. I....if you can just think on it, perhaps I could get one of those Asmodean Crystals?"

The scene ends and Fizz goes back to Ozzie, while along the way he's thinking about Blitz' words and how he was saved by him where in the end, Fizz agrees to send Blitz a Crystal because he's earned it from saving his very life.

Or here's another scenario, Blitz has a Crystal from the start(which he took from Verosika when they were dating), but as things get far more hectic up on Earth with more dangers. The Crystal ends up shattering after I.M.P. gets back to Hell after a job, thus Blitz goes to actually confront his past and reconcile with Fizz in order to try and get a new one.

See how easy it is now, to just remove Stolas entirely? They took away a character's purpose of being in the show....that to me, is completely disappointing. Characters, especially those that are suppose to be IMPORTANT, should have a purpose...without that? You may as well just delete them entirely.

Blitz could have had 2 whole Seasons with relating to the past and those that he hurt, that he TRULY hurt(Verosika, Fizz and Barbie) that would actually matter to him as a character. But instead, all these characters are instead shoved to the wayside, for a character who doesn't matter anymore and only actually matters because the writing is FORCING him to matter.

You can write the narrative in so many different ways with what Season 2 gives us, that completely destroys what Season 1 told us. Are we now expected to just....IGNORE AN ENTIRE SEASON?

They can do this whole "sad Stolas is sad and Blitz is hurt and Stolas is going to give him a crystal." Thing all the way to 'try' and fix things, but it'll fix nothing....because the deal between them was retroactively made completely pointless.

The show will continue obviously, but in the back of the minds....it will be a broken narrative and Season 1 is basically buried 6 feet under. As a writer, this really annoys me....because they had how long between Seasons to nail this down? How long have we all waited just in-between episodes? This shouldn't have happened.

Yes, is storytelling hard? Obviously, none of my stories are perfect....but at least the narrative is coherent from beginning to end.

Anyway...I just...had to get this out of my head, because it was really frustrating and I want it to be acknowledged more. The narrative is important folks, if it's broken...that's not a good thing.

I'm still watching this show....if only because I'm knee deep in it now and I still somewhat actually like the characters, but what I don't like...is this broken narrative that is still hanging around with a pointless character that doesn't matter to the show anymore.

Narratives, coherent narratives are important to a story, without it? You don't have characters and you don't have a story.

Episode 3

Blitzo has an ex, and he also has a sister. 👀

Verosika. That like a weird mashup of Veronica and Vriska….But she was in rehab?

Ok Veroskia’s design is so pretty. But man she and Blitzo do not look like there from the same universe. Made it’s the color palette, or the lineart, it they kind of collide.

Oh, she’s a succubs. Neat.

Loona has a human disguise? Do all Hellhounds have one, or just her? 

Verosika human design is very pretty.

Loona having a crush on Vortex is cute. But man Loona human design is god awful when she’s standing next to Vortex. Her head is too big in some frames, and her anatomy looks off.

Moxxie and Millie team name is M&M, that’s cute.

Oh, Blitzo adopted Loona, who was almost 18 and almost aged out of the orphanage. Interesting choice. I wonder when that decision was made from the pilot to the actual show? Because in the pilot, Loona was just a snarky rude teenager receptionist. Here in the show, she insincure angry teenager.

So human alcohol can make imps drunk, but demon alcohol can make animals into violent mutants monsters..cool.

Vortex has a girlfriend, but it’s cool that he wants to help Loona make some friends!

Scale of 5, I give this a 3. It was just an ok episode.

Episode 4

Ok this version of heaven is very different then the Hazbin heaven. Maybe this is because this show was created when Hazbin was still a pilot? But there a a Cherub version of the Imps. AKA 3 angels trying to save people’s love ones. Ok that a cool premiere! Assassin group vs rescue (?) group!

Oh seems like Blitzo’s sister is his twin! Again, are they human that turn Imp or a hell-born demon?? It’s also cool how in the background they show small but important details. Like in a few episodes ago, they had a bunch of ads and poster of Fizz the clown robot.

Heheh her name is a play on barwire.

There 3 trilionaires in the human world??

Blitzo does have a point, when they kill somebody for hire, the victim gets sent to hell. Why is that? If it’s like a murder and the victim wants revenge that’s understandable. But in this case, the client wanted to kill the guy because he doesn’t want the person to have the inheritance. Why would that make the potential victim be sent to hell? Why would the clients want the people to be in hell anyway? To physically torment them? Like the episode where the teacher wanted to kill the girlfriend, what would she do once the girlfriend is in hell? Kill her again? Torment her?

Idk why, maybe it’s the lighting, or maybe it’s because Blitzo out makeup on, but in this episode he’s like a weird pale pink color then his normal red. I noticed this too with Moxxie in the beach episode. It’s kind of distracting.

Little pet peeve; I feel like there too much cursing? Like I can toon it out, but still. That and the causal fatphobia, sexism, and slur shaming..😬

Seeing 2 out of the 3 cherubs getting angry and curing, make me wish that when an Angel starts to do that, they start to fall. That the hate and stress corrupt them. It would be so cool to see.

Oh!!!!!! OMG the cherubs accidentally killed the old man, and now can’t be allowed back in heaven!!! Though the little deer girl didn’t actually explain what the rules are? BUT JUSTICE FOR LITTLE GOAT BOY HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG HE WASNT STARTING TO GET CORRUPTED. Goat boy is my son now. And I’m taking him as mine now.

Scale out of 5. I give it a 5. I love this episode, it shows a deeper worldbuilding of how heaven and hell operates and how both sides try to get humans on their side.

Episode 5

Ok, so the deal Stolas and Blitzo had was about having casual sex. Thought Blitzo can’t really do his job without the grimoire, but neither can Stolas. So what does it do?

Blitzo’s co-workers are from the ring of Wrath. 👀 interesting.

Yooooooo Millie’s parents!!!! Oooooo a lore episode. Ok so Millie has parents, so I guess Imps are born in hell? Then what’s the difference, the physical differences, between a human turn demon, and an Imp? Maybe it’s the white spots/marked they have??

Moxxie infodumping about war and the history is cute.

Millie moved to Imp City. I guess that’s either the capital of the ring they stay at, or like an area only for Imp???

In Dante’s Infero, Wrath is the 5th circle of hell. There 2 groups of sinner in this circus, those who anger is expressed, and thoese who anger is internal/repressed (sullen). The groups have different punishment. Thoese who express their anger fight one another on the surface/side banks of the Styx, and the repressed are underneath the river Styx, in the swampy mud.

What Vivzie does here is have the Imps play games an annual Pain Game. I’m getting the Imps here are just farmers??

Moxxie feeling insecure about not being physically strong is neat. I like his and Strikers dynamic.

Blitzo having some insecurities is odd, idk if feels way out of left field? But Striker does have a point, why does Blitzo stay or keep going back to Stolas if he needs the book? Can’t he find a different way to get to the human realm?

👀 stolas’s wife hired Striker to kill somebody. My guess it’s Blitzo, since I don’t think She would kill her husband, and especially not tell her plans when they’re at the dinner table.

Score out of 5, I give this a 4.

Episode 6

So the government as been noticing and keeping track of the Imps. 👀. Blitzo and Moxxie were kidnapping and Millie became extremely overprotective and while Loona was concerned. Nice that the girls are going to help.

Moxxie making an extra long and complicated code order, and then laughing at the humans and just being chill, is a bit odd. I’m use to him either being angry, insecure, or being empathetic. So seeing this side of him is new. Also, I feels like Blitzo, Stolas, and Moxxie and the ones that have the most screen time/character development.

“I’m like 5 years older than you”. If Lonna is 18, that means Millie would be 23???? Idk if that’s true or not but if it is….WHAT?????

👀 yoooo higher animation for the hallucinations scenes!!!

Ok, wow. I love this?? Moxxie hallucinations is him and Blitzo dress as phantom of the opera, and Moxxie is questioning his “friendship” with Blitzo. Asking him why he keeps pushing his friends away, why he alienates other with his toxicity. Meanwhile Blitzo is dress in a clown outfit, in the mud, seeing shapes. The hallucinations of Moxxie telling him that Blitzo needs him and that he doesn’t want to be alone. He also hallucinations Striker, Fizz, and his ex. Saying that people resent him. And that he doesn’t understand relationships but also craves it. Moxxie wants to speak his mind and be a better friend to Blitzo.

After they hallucinate, Moxxie tells Blitzo what he said to Moxxie on their first day together. Blitzo also compliments Moxxie and tell him to use his name instead of sir.

This is a sweet bonding between the two. I don’t know how to feel about it though? Like it feels like progress and to make the two characters that fight and argue at lot to finally come together…But at the same time, it feels a bit too soon? I don’t know…

The fight scenes are very good! Lots of camera movements, fluid animation, and fun angles. Thought at some parts when there wasn’t that many characters and it only focused on one person, the space of the room felt too big and the animation felt slow.

“HEY THE ENDO PERIOD WAS BADASS AND YOU KNOW IT” haha nice.

Uno oh spaghetti O….the gang is traps by the two governments agents……and they….cant get out with the book because the room is too dark? Seriously. Guys, there like, 4 of you and 2 of them. You literally massacred a room full of agents…

Oh well, Stolas came and save the day. That little horror scene is neat, I like his monster demon bird form. But also how did he knew what was happening????

Oh…Blitzo kissed Stolas…are they a thing? Just friends with benefits? I don’t ship them so I don’t care. Well, besides Stolas’s cheating.

Dang the government guys have evidence now!!!

Score out of 5. I give this a 3. The fights and hallucinations scenes were cool, but that all that was interesting.

Episode 7

For some reason this episode is title as final but there also an episode 8?????

!!!! Well dang, Blitzo is having a character growth. He acting nicer to Moxxie and Millie. Also, it’s Moxxiea and Millie anniversary! Demons can get married. They’re also going to the Lust ring.

In Dante’s inferno, Lust is the second ring, but the first sin. Sinners are punished by being whipped and hurled around tornado and violent winds. Dante also thinks lust is the least serious sin. Also King Minos is a demon who judge and listens to sinners and send them to their correct circle. Btw, Dante infero hell has 9 circles; Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Hersey, Violence, Fraud, and lastly Treachery.

In the Christian mythology, the seven sins are lust, pride, greed, gluttony, sloth, wrath, and lastly envy.

It’s interesting to see how Viv will combine or different the seven sins vs Dante inferno…

Blitzo asking Stolas out of a date, just to spy on Moxxie and Millie, but then end up actually talking to Stolas, is interesting. I just the having a slow burn from friends with benefits to being an actual couple??

“Octavia is with her mother this weekend” 👀 oh they did get a divorce!!! Got for them. Well, like, not. But I’m glad they decided to end it instead of staying together and keep fighting every day. I guess Stolas can now try to be with Blitzo since he and his wife broke up?? But I still think it’s not good..

Stolas looks at all the damage his family has endured and realizes he has to fight. He now realizes he has to make things right, however he doesn't know that the destruction of his reputation and family was his own doing and blames it on Blitz, the victim. He realizes he hasn't seen Octavia in a long time and goes to look for her and he finds her. She's extremely angry at her father and rightfully so, calling him out for neglecting her and ignoring her for years on end because of his quarrels with Stella over small issues and cheating on her, everyday there's a quarrel over every detail, one day they realize they weren't made for each other and Stolas and Stella got a divorce. All this, whilst Octavia, their child, stayed in the dark, with no one to guide her on her destiny and path. Stolas blames Stella, saying to Octavia that her mom was always so bitchy and childish and she was always slandering him over the smallest things. But Octavia insists that her mom was better because despite how bitchy she acted, she was honest. Stolas wasn't. Despite how childish she acted, she was willing to tell her daughter the truth. This in turn made her a more trustworthy mother rather than Stolas being a more trustworthy father because even though he was her comforter, he was also a liar which in turn made him two-faced. Octavia also tells Stolas in a fit of rage that the reason her mother was never kind to him was because she knew you never loved her, you only cared about yourself, you only cared about fulfilling your lustful desires, which in turn made you cheat on her. If you rejected your wife's love for you, then what do you want from her? Octavia tells him that the destruction of this family was of his doing because he was nothing but a two-faced selfish neglectful deadbeat liar who only cared about his own happiness rather everyone else's happiness. You cared more about your own happiness rather than your own daughter and wife's happiness. You could clearly see that the imp you so dearly lust over is always uncomfortable around you but you are so engrossed in your own world that you forget who you are. A father, a husband, a prince.

Octavia was Stolas's wake up call, she was the one that gave him a reality check and made him wake up to discover who he has truly become. Octavia, his former pride and joy, was left in the dust for a long time and when everything came crushung down, Octavia was the one to wake him up and made him realize, this is all his doing. Octavia was his key to repentance, she was the source of his true side, the side that has long been forgotten. The caring father who comforted her when she has a bad dream and prioritized her over anything else. But he let his selfishness get the best of him and his family is broken as a result. Octavia woke him up, gave him a reality check and made him realize who he truly is. Stolas realized that had he paid more attention to her and actually loved Stella, it wouldn't have been this way. Octavia, his daughter, his bundle of sunshine, his source of peace and joy, was his key to repentance.

And that is my rewrite.

I love this idea. Make bird dick realize it's his own fault and no-one else can be blamed.

Octavia and Verosika did NOTHING wrong. Octavia has the right to not like her dad who ignored and neglected her in order for his one-sided affair. Verosika has the right to hate Blitzo (to quote my queen Veroska) maxed out her credit card on shitty horse riding lessons and left her to pay for the hotel. Octavia got called a COCK BLOCKING SLUT by one of the CREATORS OF HELLUVA BOSS! And Verosika constantly gets called a bitch, slut, or whore. I love Octavia and Verosika, they have done no wrong and I am taking them from Vivziepop.

Also Verosika looks so good in the outfits the Helluva Boss team puts her in and I’m supposed to hate her? No fuck that I love her so much and she has probably one of the best or the best design out of all the Helluva Boss characters.

Octavia also deserves a better dad. She’s also got an actually pretty cool design, she’s just a little silly who has also has a great voice actor!

Also baby Octavia! She’s so cute :). I love her so much and she deserves so much more than Stolas. AND THEN SHE GETS CALLED A COCK BLOCKING SLUT. SHE’S FUCKING 17. Overall I love them, Octavia is just a little silly and Verosika is my queen.

Stoliz has quite literally hindered the show's true potential, but jusy because we all have the "awww" and "my poor owl baby" from vivziepop stans, the ship stays. Fanservice 101 my comrades.

This. At the end of this series, I think I will hate this ship as much as Starco. Another ship that brought down the series and made people just despise when shipping gets ahead of good writing.

To that whiteknight that said my opinions are crappy and that I don't know what it takes to write or animate a single episode, here's the thing. I'm an actual animator and I'm a writer. Here's the thing, animation is like math. It's only HARD when you don't understand it's systems and methods and principles, otherwise it all just becomes tedious work, so even though you might have a fun little idea in your head, actually bringing to life is not fun at all. But the results from all your hard labour is what pays off, thats the true fun of animation. The results are worth it, not the actual animating part. So animation is not hard, its tedious as fuck.

Second of all, you don't really need to even have a script to write a good story. You see Hayao Miyazaki's films? No screenplays, its all in the storyboards. Generally, you can even improvise and still get good writing, for example an author named Steven James writes clever and thrilling books without any outlines, it's all organic. Miyazaki and James's ways of writing are organic, they just hop into the story and figure it all out as they go along. Even Shu Takumi, man behind Ace Attorney doesn't have any outlines, he just hops to it. So no, scripts are necessarily needed for writing episodes, besides these guys wrote entire games, novels and movies without scripts. So it isn't really needed, so sorry if you thought a good story requires a script, I don't need to be a qualified scriptwriter to write a good story, besides, a lot of people are qualified and yet they write dogshit and destory entire franchises. I don't need to demonstrate my ability to write a good script, I should demonstrate my ability to write a good story. Helluva Boss prioritizes a toxic ship rather than well-written characters, conflicts, arcs, drama, action, etc. This toxic ship therefore destroys the characters it has build up, for whatever reason the writer chooses to keep I don't know, but they are not a good writer if they can't see the effect this worthless ship has on it's characters. And in order to protect one of its characters who was clearly in a position of power to stop this affair, they blame it on the victim then villainize them for the rest of the season. I very well know Blitz has ruined many of his former loved ones' lives, and he is clearly at fault and must be punished, but his relationship with Stolas with it ruining Stolas's whole life and family is not one of them. Stolas is responsible for the destruction of his family and his reputation, it was of his own doing. Instead of making him get what he deserves and gets character development and becomes a better person, someone we can actually sympathize with for once, the writers especially Vivienne simply choose not to. Bad writing, dare I say garbage writing.

I agree make Bird boy face consequences for his own damn actions instead of throwing the blame everywhere but him.

The Narrative Is Going To Use Blitzo's Shitty Treatment Of Verosika To Validate Stolas' Entitlement To Him

Ok, I can understand Verosika having resentment because again he did take advantage of her because of his insecurities, but Stolas on the other hand really shouldn't be seen as the victim. And just because Verosika was a victim of Blitzo's insecurities doesn't mean Stolas was. Mostly because Stolas started this on the assumption that Blitzo wanted him due to their once childhood meeting. And from there on out Blitzo had to thread a line of keeping Stolas happy so that he could keep his business up. In other words, Stolas should be the one called out but again the damn bird is validated for feeling entitled to have Blitzo return his feelings. They are making it seem he's once again turning down someone who is seen as good for him because of his tendency to shove people away but no it's because Stolas made him feel belittled and trapped and that was valid. We never saw if it was true with Verosika but we did see that many times with Stolas and he has every reason not to return his feelings, while this show makes it seem selfish that he doesn't. Seriously, even if Stolas wanted to give him the crystal to end the original agreement he's not entitled to be loved and wanted. That has to be earned by someone who shows it and he still doesn't get it.

And again it takes away Verosika's own issues with Stolas to bolster this damn ship. She shouldn't be used as a tool to validate Stolas's crap. They both can be connected, but the issue is that Blitzo needs to confront he treated her badly but with his relationship with Stolas it's another monster in itself. Because it's a two street with the blame that should mostly be on Stolas instead of him.

I'm bored and Viv is a shit writer so I'm gonna go into how the Helluva Boss Stolas is a fucked up version of Snow White:

Stolas's human form has pale white skin, black hair and red eyes/Snow White has pale white skin, black hair and red lips - Stolas is a horrible person while Snow White is not.

Stolas has an abusive father with a connection to mirrors/Snow White has an abusive mother or stepmother with a connection to mirrors - Stolas becomes just like his father while Snow White is better than her mother or stepmother.

Stolas is connected to a female antagonist concerned about her reputation/Snow White is connected to a female antagonist concerned about her reputation - Helluva Boss uses Stella to excuse Stolas's bad behavior while Little Snow White doesn't do that.

Stolas is a prince connected with shorter, lower class imps/Snow White is a princess connected with shorter, lower class dwarves - Stolas treats imps like absolute shit while Snow White befriends the seven dwarves.

Stolas could be said to be "awakened" by Blitzo in a sleep-like experience/Snow White was awakened by her Prince when the Queen poisoned her - Stolas goes on to sexually coerce his "lover" which Snow White never does.

Stolas wants Blitzo to be his knight in shining armor/Snow White's true love is a Prince - As said before Stolas sexually coerces and fetishizes Blitzo which Snow White never does.

Stolas has to deal with Striker trying to assassinate him under Stella's orders/Snow White has to deal with the Huntsman trying to assassinate her under the Queen's orders - Stolas treated the situation unseriously enough to where he was making sex jokes while Snow White was concerned for her life.

In conclusion Snow White is better lol.

I would like to say something about heaven's hierarchy in helluva boss and hazbin hotel. Like,I've made some research (I'm going by the Christian hierarchy from the Chatolic Christian bible) and like.

God on top,clearly

Then Lucifer,the most glorious angel god ever made

Then we have our Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael,Uriel,Raguel,Remiel and Sariel guardian angels of nations

Seraphim,the burning ones,with the task of taking care of god's throne and worshipping him 24/7

Cherubim, they guard the way to the tree of life and God's throne and there was a huge misunderstanding with Putti,those chubby babies usually associated with cupid,while cherubims have four feet,a lion body with oxen feet and four faces (man,ox,lion or eagle)

Thrones. Those wheel things with wings and eyes, they carry god's throne

Domions/lordship. They look like humans and keep lower angels in line

Virtues/strongholds they carry out miracles and heavenly signs

Powers/authorities just like their name,these angels have enough power to be warriors and carry out wars against angels

Principalities. They deliver heavens blessings

archangels. The use of the capital letter is important here because archangels and angels are the lowest choir of angels,but these gud have higher status in comparison to angels

Finally angels are the lowest rank of all heaven and are those in most contact with living beings on earth and are meant to serve humanity

I have so many pet peeves with this hierarchy in front of my eyes because first if all,it should have been imps vs angels in that episode with the rich bastard who wanted to die in helluva boss,second of all,where did god go? Where did the archangels go? Where are they? Also the plural of cherub is cherubim but of course Viv wouldn't think about that because otherwhise it wouldn't rhyme with that stupid song. I guess it's all for now then.
